THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM

A MESSAGE FROM RICK
A MESSAGE FROM NICK OT
Dear Parents,
I'm writing to you from St David’s in Wales on the Year 6 trip with adventure company TYF. This trip has been a totally fantastic adventure for the children and has given them access to so many unique, fun and challenging experiences. It has also been an endless chance for personal development, self-challenge, teamwork and friendship building for all of the children. These are all skills that are key for our Frensham children and areas we will be focusing on in the Junior School as we move forward across this term and into 2023.
I’d like to thank Honesty, Kelly and the Junior School staff for managing things while we have been away and believe the strength of knowledge, skills and expertise across the school has held us in very strong place and gives us the opportunity as a school to be adventurous in the experiences we offer as a Junior School.
I’d also like to say a thank you to all of you for coming to the first showcase event of the Summer Term, which feedback suggests was a great success. We hope that it gave you the chance as parents to re-engage with your children’s learning space and to see many of the inspiring outcomes your children are creating and producing. The next showcase event will be the End of Year Celebration Assembly on 7th July in the Theatre (after morning drop off) and don’t forget Founders' Day on Saturday 2nd July. If you have never been to Founders' Day before then I’d describe it as a festival-style celebration of Frensham where we get everyone together as a whole school to celebrate this Spirit of Togetherness.
Next week gives everyone a circuit breaker of time to recharge and get ready for a jam-packed 5 weeks of learning, action and further unique events and trips. You may also be celebrating the Jubilee in some capacity, so please do have fun and enjoy your week. Nursery to Year 5 finished their week with a special assembly led by Kelly today with a Jubilee focus. Prior to this they received a royal invite to the assembly and there was even a special Jubilee themed snack. Great times!
Take care, have fun and see you soon.

WELLBEING RESOURCES
We know there are a lot of students struggling with anxiety, either exam related or not. We hope they know they're not alone and can always reach out for support, but here are a couple of resources which may help you to support them at home.
UKRAINIAN BURSARY APPEAL
We are delighted to tell you that our Ukrainian Bursary Appeal has been really successful so far. We would love to thank those wonderful families that have donated so far, it really will make a difference to allow us to get the extra support that these children need. CHARITY CYCLE FOR KNOYDART FOUNDATION
They did it! Our fabulous Year 12 students cycled the Shipwrights way on Saturday to raise money for the benches which we are building on our trip to Knoydart next month. They all persevered over some tough hills and some slippery conditions, working brilliantly as a team to get each other to the end. If you would like to support them by donating to the cause, please follow the link: CLICK HERE TO DONATE

INFORMAL FOF VOLUNTEERS GROUP
FOF are looking to put on many more events as we begin to enjoy a return to a more normal life.
To help with this we are looking to put together a group that we can contact to help out once in a while, either through WhatsApp and/or email. It's nothing permanent and can range from:
helping out at an event
taking in collections
selling 2nd hand uniform
meeting up with new parents
or just having a catch up and a coffee.
You can dip in and out as you like, but it would be a fun way to become more involved in this great Frensham community.

THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM
YEAR 10 HORIZONS HEALTHY LIVING MORNING
On Monday Year 10 were out of lessons for a series of talks and lessons on topics aiming to help them to be healthy and stay safe. We called on some of our in-house expertise to deliver these and it was good to see the students engage with the different topics and ask some brilliant questions to help them understand more. Carys spoke to them first about how to develop a healthy lifestyle encouraging them to eat healthily, drink plenty of water and get enough sleep. While some of the students wanted to argue for later bedtimes and lie-ins they all accepted that her knowledge and expertise were to be respected even if they did not like some of the facts! They then looked at ways to manage stress and had a first aid workshop from Linn. Finally, we were really grateful to welcome OF Ollie Harding back to talk to the students with his Mum, Louise, about online security and how to stay safe online. Louise’s expertise was invaluable, and Ollie was able to connect with the students really well and enjoyed being back on the Frensham stage. Thank you to Louise, Ollie, Carys, Linn K and all the staff who helped with this morning. While it was a shame this had to be postponed due to our outside speaker having to pull out at the last minute, we have managed to book a replacement who will talk to the students during the afternoon of June 13th and revisit the topic of Healthy Relationships with them. We look forward to that.
YEAR 7 ECODAYS
On Friday 20th May, Year 7 enjoyed a day reconnecting with nature, as a light start (post exams) to our Eco Days. They started in our local woodland walking with their tutors, listening to the rain fall on the trees and playing games. A drying off session in the theatre for a talk and viewing of Our Planet followed.
The groups went to Farnham Park to be taken on a tour by Nick Macfarlane, the Park Ranger, who gave us a fascinating insight into the ecology, management and history of the park. We were all surprised to hear that a Roman aqueduct once ran through the park and had fun pulling Himalayan balsam (an invasive species) and studying the meandering stream as we walked through it.
Back at school, groups also engaged in some fun games, playing table tennis and swimming pool volleyball, which was a big hit!
The second Eco Day for Year 7 will take place on the school site on Wednesday 29th June.
Over the next half term, Geography and Science lessons will have an Eco slant as we examine habitats, conservation, and issues of waste.
"I loved venturing through the rivers – it felt like we were in a jungle."
"I liked trying to find the fairies."
"I loved the swimming volleyball – it was the best to play with all my friends, not just the boarders
Walking in a field with cows was fun."
"I enjoyed jumping across the banks of the river."
"It was really interesting to see how the pebbles were shaped by the stream."
DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY EXTRACURRICULAR PROJECT
As part of an extra curricular club I wanted to extend my knowledge of jewellery making, something that interests me and maybe an area of interest for the future. The first step in making this ring was to sketch out some designs and then use the design software 2D design V3 so that, based on the initial sketches, a mould could be designed and cut with the laser cutter. Once the mould was cut from 9mm laser MDF, the next step was to melt down the metal (pewter) to pour into the mould. After it had hardened and cooled, the only remaining task was to file the edges to achieve a wavy pattern and polish the ring using different grades of emery cloth. I’m very happy with the final outcome and have developed new skills and processes.

YEAR 4 DT
Year 4 have been looking at reusing and recycling materials this half term for DT. They worked hard on designing a marble run, thinking carefully about different materials for friction, and angles for gravity to enable a clear run down.
YEAR 9 TRIP TO THORPE LAKE
Year 9 had a great trip to Thorpe Lake last week for some wakeboarding and inflatable fun - despite the wet weather.
NURSERY – YR 5 JUBILEE CELEBRATION
What a wonderful end to half term on such a glorious morning, celebrating Kings, Queens, Princes, Princesses and everything red, white and blue!
Our children arrived to start the day dressed in glorious costumes and clothes fit for royalty!!! Our grown ups also took the opportunity to embrace their inner Monarch.
After our assembly in the Ballroom, the children gathered out on the front lawn and in the style of many street parties of the past sat in two long lines to have their morning snack. The snack this morning was also fit for royalty, the most amazing Jubilee cup-cakes provided by our catering team, not a crumb was left over!!!
It was a wonderful sight to see, all our pupils from nursery to year 5 enjoying the morning spring sun. The Frensham ‘Spirit of Togetherness’ was definitely in full force today.
YEAR 9 AND 10 WAKEBOARDING
A group of Year 9 and 10 students have been spending their Tuesday afternoons kneeboarding and wakeboarding with Linn K at Thorpe Lakes. We managed to get a few photos of them this week.
SUSTAINABILITY FESTIVAL
Frensham Heights had a stall and a stand in the glorious sunshine last Sunday.
Two of our students had their own stall selling items that they had made or gathered too.
There was a talk about Sustainability at Frensham Heights where we led with a message about fabric and how once it is made it can become a number of things ongoing and almost have at least nine lives, the same as a cat!
Thanks go out to Debbie Hunt for the large amount of items she personally made from recycled fabrics for us.
WEDNESDAY AFTERNOONS
Our outreach has changed this half term and is focussed on teenagers from Ukraine who have not been given a school place. A growing group of Ukrainian visitors between the ages of 12 and 18 are meeting with a few of our 6th formers, Lynn G and Katya(Yr 7 parent) to socialise, follow Happy Space’s well being programme and take part in activities. Drama, cooking, an art tour and a walk have all been enjoyed so far. We share a lot of laughter when we meet.
CLIMBING ECA
On Wednesday afternoons, Linn K takes a group of Yr 7 - 13 students to Surrey Sports Park for some bouldering and rope climbing.
OUTREACH YRS 7 & 8
Yesterday, we visited Gostrey Brightwell to begin decorating their hall by making ROYAL SCARECROWS.
It was a tremendous amount of fun, we all learnt the National Anthem again and here were our scarecrows.
THIS WEEK'S SPORTS REPORT
Under 15s Rounders Vs Ditcham Park School
We played our first rounders fixtures of the season away at Ditcham this week, in-between some very heavy rain!
The U14 team were dominant from the start and batted particularly well throughout. To mention some, stand out performances - Lulu bowled accurately and consistently, Lexie batted strongly and there was some confident fielding by Willow and Grace on the bases.
Under 13s Girls Cricket Vs Alton
Under 13s Cricket Vs The Royal
The U13s played cricket against The Royal on Thursday. We won the toss and elected to field first. We showed real improvement in our bowling and fielding restricting the opposition to 76-8. Special mention for Zac and Jack who both claimed 2 wickets each. We then chased the runs really well with excellent innings from both Harry B and Harry C. It is great to see how much they have all improved this half term. Well done, a great win!
