THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM

Friday 28th April, 2023

A MESSAGE FROM LAURA

Thank you for your positive messages of support for myself and the new Leadership Team following my start of term letter. We are very much looking forward to talking to as many of you as possible on 15th May at the Town Hall event as we share our priorities for moving forward. For catering purposes, please do let Lindsey know if you are planning to attend head@frensham.org

We have started this term off in our usual busy way and I can’t believe that we have only been back at school for four days. This week we saw the tremendous talent of our students in the performance of Back to Broadway. This was a student led production which, for those of you who were lucky enough to attend, will agree was phenomenal. Congratulations to all those students involved. This week has also seen the launch of our new approach to food. Thank you to the 179 of you who completed the Food Survey. Over the Easter holiday I met with our catering team and shared your feedback. I am working with them to ensure that as much feedback as possible is incorporated and after week one, I have been informed by many of our students that, the food is already much better. This week some creative GCSE and A Level practical exams got underway and Year 10 and Year 12 have completed the first of their two weeks of assessments. Good luck to all of them. The students have been positive about their experiences so far, although the reality of exams and assessments can be the source of much anxiety. If your child, or family, requires additional support during this time, please do let us know. Finally, I was visited by two very excited Meerkats on Thursday who brought Year 1 with them. They explored the office and even had their photos taken, Year 1 were very excited to tell me and Beverley all about their new friends.

In the coming weeks I hope to send you a comprehensive staff list which includes a photo of each member of staff and their job title. This is as a result of parents wanting to know what staff look like. The impact of Covid and not being in school has meant that the usual teacher parent relationships that build year on year have been disrupted. There are many of you who know our names but, unless we have taught your child, you do not know what we look like. I hope that this document will not only help you to put a face to a name but also serve to aid communication and reconnect us moving forwards.

The Frensham Heights Arts Award for Sixth Form is attracting much attention. We have created a bespoke programme for students who are passionate about the Visual or Performing Arts. All of our current Year 11 students who are planning to study a Visual or Creative Arts A Level will automatically join this programme. We still have a few places left for September, so if you know anyone in Year 11 who may benefit from this programme, please do share this link  https://www.frensham.org/artsawards

I wish you all a restful Bank holiday weekend.

RESIDENTIAL TRIPS - LOOKING AHEAD

We are very lucky that we have a large number of staff who are very happy to run school trips that enrich our school experience – including over weekends and holidays. We know that trips require a lot of planning and in general residential trips are scheduled a year in advance so that we can organise them and allow you time to plan/save as neede. Below is a live link to our working document that shows our plans so far.  The further ahead the trip – the less details we may have – but hopefully it goes someway to help give the overview.

THIS WEEK
BACK TO BROADWAY

We were all so happy to see 8 months of hard work come to fruition in an amazing night of the best Broadway songs, we could not be prouder of the cast and crew for how hard they worked, and we can’t wait to see what they do next year! - Beth

As those of you who were there will know – Wednesday night's performance was something that I absolutely loved!  To me it optimised everything that is Frensham! A school that is proud to be authentic, lets things organically develop and allows students to be brave and take on leadership. The four Sixth formers that lead this, as I said to those in School Notices (Yr7-13) on Tuesday and to the audience on Wednesday, are true ambassadors of Frensham - and they are fantastic examples of roles models that all our students could learn from.  For eight months they have shown resilience; they have been brave, they have been creative; they have been kind and they have been bold.  They have shared their high expectations with their cast (Years 7 to 9) and have helped them exceed their own expectations as to what they can do. They have been inclusive; making sure everyone had a chance to shine and they too have learnt a great deal about themselves and their own leadership styles. I am always in awe of our students when they go on the stage – and Wednesday night's performance was just a shining example of why!

- Becks

Thank you to Iola Yr 10 for the stunning photos

BARCELONA TRIP

Our recent Barcelona trip was jam packed with cultural gems. We visited Montserrat Monastery which dates back to the 11th century, indulged in tapas tasting, took the cable car to Montjuic Mountain and visited the castle. There was a trip to the Olympic stadium, Flamenco dancing, the Non Camp museum and stadium, Gaudi's Parc Guell, a market, the Picasso museum, and a Paella Masterclass. It was an incredible trip and we fitted in so much. No wonder we all came home needing a rest!

Year 7 Worthy Earth Project

The Year 7 Worthy Earth project is now well under way. The students each spent two hours down at the site this week bringing the kitchen garden to life. Working in rotation, they built up the raised beds outside and planted trays of seeds in the poly tunnel. All the students were engaged in their tasks and worked really well as a team. We are incredibly lucky to have the expertise of the Worthy Earth team and the generous use of the land to allow our students to have the opportunity to be part of this initiative. We'll keep you updated as the project develops.

Easter Ski Trip

Here are some photos from the Yr 6 - 13 Easter break ski trip.

ROCK & POP

Before the Easter holidays, we had a wonderful Rock & Pop gig. Thank you to Sabine in Year 10 for these amazing photos.

CLONING CAULIFLOWER

Here are some photos of the cloning experiment that Y13 Biologists set up before leaving for the Easter break, these are the results.  Genetically identical cauliflower clones!

PRE Visit to Oxford University

During the Easter holidays, a small group of students from Years 5, 10 & 12 visited Oxford University to take part in a discussion group led by Professor Keith Ward, hosted at Christ Church college. Professor Ward spoke about Biblical interpretation & translation, life after death, and his own ideas on Personal Idealism, all of which were fascinating. This was followed by an excellent group discussion with people from a diverse range of backgrounds. Even though our students were the youngest in the room, they were brilliantly engaged, inquisitive & critical. Professor Ward was really impressed with their ability to think deeply & articulate their own ideas, as well as their willingness to listen readily to the reflections of others around them. Everyone came away feeling inspired & ready to start the new term! A huge thank you to the Kenyon family, particularly John, for inviting us along.
