I am writing to you from San Francisco, having had a wonderful three days so far in the USA. Last night saw the first of my Old Frenshamian social functions, and it was an amazing event. Hosted by Robert Popper, OF from the 1940s, and his wife Marcia at their home in Presidio, we had a wonderfully diverse group of OFs, spanning the 1940s, 50s, 70s and 80s. Despite their age differences and varied life experiences, what united them was the profound warmth they feel for Frensham and the gratitude they have for the education they received.
Following my visit of two schools in Chicago, yesterday I spent time at Presidio Hill School in San Francisco. It has been wonderful to meet fellow educators, to talk about shared philosophies and challenges, and to look for ways to work together. I have been struck too by the significant alignment there is between the varied schools I have seen and Frensham; for example, Presidio Hill was founded by two women in 1918, women who had been inspired by progressive ideals to set up a school that did things differently. Much like Frensham, they also have a significant moment in their history when they welcomed families who had been driven out of Europe by World War Two, so like us they have a deep rooted philosophy of tolerance, acceptance and compassion.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all the students and staff for an excellent first half of term. I hope they all have a restful half term and we look forward to seeing many of you at the Bonfire Night on Sunday 3rd November, to start off a successful second half of term.
With best wishes
