THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 1st April, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK Dear Parents The sudden change in weather this week, after the glorious sunshine recently, has not dampened the spirits at school and we have ended the term on a high. I want to pay tribute again to my wonderful staff who have laboured on this term in challenging conditions with so many staff absences due to COVID. They have covered for each other, and they have worked hard to ensure that your children’s education has had as little disruption as possible. They certainly deserve a good break now! ISI Inspection report I hope by now you have all had a chance to read our fantastic Inspection report. As I have said before, I'm delighted that ISI have endorsed my new vision, mission, aims and values for the school, but I want to reassure parents that we continue to work hard to improve all we do. I already have an action plan in place to address the recommendations that ISI have made and will share next steps with parents on this in due course. Recent events This term has finally felt a lot more like the Frensham of old, with numerous events for the community to attend. The Aldridge Theatre has been buzzing again, playing host to the fantastic senior play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, to the dazzling dance show, the joyous ‘A Night at the West End’ and the wonderful Rock and Pop gig last night, amongst other events. Together with regular lunchtime concerts, a teatime concert for the Junior School and a brilliant Taiko Drumming Festival with some local schools, our performing arts have been back with a bang. I hope you have all enjoyed the opportunity to see the children doing so well. Read More A MESSAGE FROM KATHERINE Dearest Frensham family, Frensham is a very special place and one I am very sad to be leaving. I never thought that taking over the Head of Junior School would be quite so eventful! I had just a term to get to know everyone’s names and then have a Christmas holiday before I was sitting in Becks's office at 8pm with Laura, Becks and Rick watching Boris’ announcement that he was shutting the schools. We sat there open mouthed! I never imagined in my wildest dreams that we would not be allowed to leave our houses and I still can’t quite believe it happened. Then it really has been a rollercoaster of two years to ride the wave of government shut downs, guidance updates and risk assessments as well as to try and implement positive change in the Junior School. There really has been very little sleep for SLT and many of our holidays ruined with updates at the last minute. This really has been a storm we have weathered as a team and I could not have done it without the support and friendship of Laura and Becks. We said right from the beginning that we were still a Frensham family and that has prevailed. To take part please tell me why you want to discover more about intuitive painting and how this will support your own creative work. This information will be used to help select students. Send an email or Teams chat message directly to Sonia Percival by 29th April. A THANK YOU FROM FRIENDS OF FRENSHAM Many thanks for all your support in donating to and shopping at, our 2nd Hand Sale this week, especially to Maki, Terry and Val for helping out on the day. Due to your amazing support, we raised approximately £450. As you are aware Covid has curtailed many of our fun activities and fundraising events, but every penny raised goes towards our goals of supporting Frensham and the local community as well as allowing us to put on events. Thank you! A THANK YOU FROM FARNHAM FOODBANK Many thanks also for your kind donations to the Farnham Foodbank (and to the Volunteers who helped coordinate the collections). Harriet at the Farnham Foodbank sent us the following message: “On behalf of the Foodbank I would like to thank Friends of Frensham Heights PTA for their wonderful donation of food items last week which amounted to 103.55kg. We were able to restock our shelves with the abundance of food which will go towards helping us meet the needs of many of the area’s poorest families during a very difficult time.” FRENSHAM HEIGHTS SCHOOL TRIPS TO BE CARBON NEUTRAL The school are aware of the impact on the environment of our activities. Student voice in the form of Eco Heights and many dedicated staff are working on a strategic environmental plan. This is being developed to cover all aspects of the school’s carbon footprint. There are many aspects to this. From April all school trips will include a small charge in most cases around 1-2% of the cost of the trip that will offset the travel of the trip. In 2021 the Year 7 Hadrian’s Wall trip and the 2022 Iceland trip were both offset. Rather than using a third party the school will be doing the offset itself in the form of tree planting on the school estate. The fund will also be placed in an ethical bank account. SHYNEFEST Run by Frensham parents, Shynefest is a family-friendly music festival happening on 3/4 June in Guildford. Click here for more info. BOOK TICKETS THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM THIS WEEK YR 7-9 ART & DESIGN EXHIBITION Like many galleries and museums we were thrilled to be able to celebrate the Art, Design and Ceramics work of our talented and imaginative Year 7 and 9 students after such a long covid induced absence. The Aldridge Theatre as ever did not disappoint as a stunning space to showcase the endeavours of our young artists and designers. Frensham students have all been busy working to develop highly personal, thoughtful well crafted pieces, in a broad variety of materials (machine sewing, cardboard construction, ceramic slip trailed, glazed and hand built pieces, painting, drawing and collaborative large scale works). Our young creative makers have really stretched their learning and developed their confidence and self belief. What a lovely evening to finally meet again and share experiences. 1/27 SCIENCE FAIR Thank you to everyone who entered the Science Fair: Year 7: Fergal – Does Sugar Affect Academic Performance? The performers were universally amazing, and it was a real treat to see some of the children on stage for the first time in a number of years. They were very professional in rehearsals and backstage, and an absolute pleasure to work with. Well done to the performers, and a big thank you to the backstage team. 1/28 GREENPOWER This week our talented engineers worked on the brakes and brake light microswitch to work when the brake lever is pulled. Once the steering assembly was finalised too, we made sure the wheel tracking was aligned correctly so the car runs as smoothly as possible! The last pieces of bodywork were fitted and secured, along with the padding and safety foam, and the car really started to look complete! We pumped the tires to the correct pressures (100PSI) and worked on some Frensham Heights Promotional banners for when we race. We are excited for next term as our first race is coming up soon!! Written by Callie 7SVC 1/3 AHOEC GOLD STANDARD Achieving the AHOEC Gold Standard in Outdoor Education is a huge achievement and we have done it again! This award reflects our complete commitment to the values of the AHOEC (Association of Heads of Outdoor Education Centres) and to Outdoor Learning. We are really proud to be the only school in the UK to hold this award. The Gold Standard process is a serious undertaking and requires a deep look into every process and procedure within the Outdoor Education department. It is unique in that it is built upon detailed self-evaluation, and exposes every piece of our work to evaluation and inspection. A huge thank you to Linn K for her lead on this amazing accomplishment. JUNIOR SCHOOL EASTER EGGS What an egg-cellent Eggs-hibition! Thank you for supporting this event and crafting the wonderful eggs-hibits that were sent in. We had a cracking assembly in N-3 where children were able to egg-splain their creation. Since then, children from across the school have been in to admire these eggy wonders! Enjoy the photos! 1/28 YEAR 7 CERAMICS ECA Inspired by The Great Pottery Throwdown, Year 7 have been making clocks in their Ceramics ECA 1/4 ECOHEIGHTS BIRD BOX This week saw the completion of this year's Bird Box Project by the Eco-Heights ECA, as the last remaining bird boxes were put up at different sites around the school. One of the longest-running projects undertaken by the ECA group, the bird boxes were an entirely student-led initiative, utilizing the support of Year 6, the DT department and Gordon (Estate Bursar) to bring it to fruition. One of those involved was Sebastian of 8SJS, who had this to say about the project: “We ran the bird box project as part of Eco-Heights because we wanted to give the younger years the opportunity to explore different ways that they can help preserve and improve the environment around them. The number of wild birds in this country is in decline and that is predominantly down to habitat destruction and we want to make sure that birds continue to nest and thrive in our school grounds. After all, who doesn’t like watching a bird fly past their window?” GOLD DofE A huge congratulations to our Gold DofE students who successfully completed their Gold DofE Practice Expedition last weekend in the Brecon Beacons. Their training day took an unexpected turn when we had to make the decision to divert the team from their intended route due to brush fires in the locality which gave them a great opportunity to look at hazard avoidance and how we go about putting plans in place to divert and evacuate when needed. Their remaining days saw them cover a distance of 35 km with a summit of Pen Y Fan on their final day and I’m pleased to say that after a few navigational errors early on in the expedition both teams managed to do a fantastic job in terms of decision making, route finding, pacing and looking after each other. Well done everyone! TRIP TO BROOKLANDS MUSEUM On Thursday Years 1-3 had a fabulous trip to Brooklands Museum. The weather was cold but the childrens’ interests were soon kindled with all the wonderful vehicles. The highlight was a visit to Concorde where despite the weather we all enjoyed pretending to be an aeroplane flying through the sky. A fabulous time was had by all! 1/5 YEAR 4 RESIDENTIAL Year 4 went on their first residential trip this week to Henley Fort. They had an AMAZING time learning about time in WW2. The children ate and cooked wartime food, they completed Homeguard and ARP Training which included putting out fires, experiencing blackouts and air raids, practising marching and handling weapons. The children slept in Yurts and had to make their own beds. The trip was brilliant and the children were impeccably behaved, they were assets to Frensham! 1/11 OLD FRENSHAMIAN REUNION On Saturday, we welcomed around 30 Old Frenshamians who left in either 2011 or 2012. The afternoon kicked off with an impressive afternoon tea in the Long Gallery, after which they were taken down to Roberts House. They then went off wandering the grounds - down to the arts block, the sports hall and Hamilton House. After a satisfying hour of wandering, they returned for a drinks reception in the Long Gallery which spilled out on to the Front Lawn. The evening continued at a local pub and we have been assured that the festivities continued throughout the evening. This is the first of hopefully many OF reunions. 1/2 SPORTS REPORT THIS WEEK'S SPORTS REPORT Sports Tours – Final Call! We have seen really strong numbers for the tours. Read More U11 Hockey v Churcher’s College The U11 hockey team played their last game of the season on Wednesday afternoon at home to Churcher’s College. Both teams were very evenly matched, and it made for a very enjoyable fixture. During the game Frensham moved the ball well showing great close control and stick skills and passed the ball well to create several attacking opportunities. In defence, Dulcie, Erina and Loic were solid and made several crucial tackles. Read More Under 11s Community Football & Netball Tournament Our sixth form sports leaders have spent the last few weeks planning to run a Football and Netball Tournament for our local primary schools. The tournaments were a great success and ran very smoothly. After several weeks spent organising the Netball tournament, it was great to be able to host Potters gate, Rowledge, South Farnham, and Bordon primary school who played against each other as well as two Frensham teams. It was fantastic to watch so many great skills and excellent teamwork on the courts, especially as it was the first time playing 7 a side for many of the teams having only played high fives previously. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 20th May, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK Dear Parents, I had the pleasure this week of meeting a number of Ukrainian refugee children living in the local area who had been invited into school to make pizzas and meet other children in similar circumstances. Lynn Goodburne and some of our wonderful Sixth Formers helped to facilitate this, and they will be doing so for the rest of the term every Wednesday afternoon. I am hugely proud of the continuing work of the school to support those in the local area, and I want to thank those in our community who have generously donated funds following my letter last week. As we are joined by more refugee children, we look forward to using these funds to support their educational and emotional needs. This week in the senior school all students in Years 7-9 have been doing their end-of-year assessments, balanced with a wonderful programme of activities. I want to thank the staff who have worked hard to ensure that the week has not been too stressful for the students, and the many smiling faces I have seen around campus suggest it has been a success. Years 10 and 12 have had an interesting week as they look at next steps: Year 10 have been finding out about the amazing opportunities in our Sixth Form, while Year 12 have been looking at life beyond Frensham. I want to thank them for their enthusiastic participation. Finally, we had a hugely successful Open Morning last weekend. We had over 100 families visiting the school, a record for us, and the combination of our wonderful student ambassadors, our passionate staff and the sunshine made it a day that the families really enjoyed. Have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes Rick A MESSAGE FROM NICK OT Dear Parents, I'm writing this from Tewkesbury on the Year 5 Residential and it has been magical to see our Frensham children back out adventuring. Simply seeing the children Katacanoeing (see video below) on the River Avon really was a brilliant moment and one that has been greatly missed. Next week, Year 6 head to St David's in Wales for their own adventures in the sea. There will also be lots of conservational exploration and discussion and a great deal of self-reflection. No doubt some wonderful memories will be made. Next Wednesday, we have our first Showcasing Event (Teaching and Learning focus) in Nursery to Year 5 when you will be invited into your child's learning space to be shown around to see some of their learning outcomes and highlights. This will happen straight after drop-off and you are invited to pop in between 8:30 - 9:15am. Please use the Main Car Park if you are intending to visit. Showcasing is very much on the agenda for the term ahead and beyond! Time is moving fast and I can't believe we are nearly at the end of this half term already. Have a lovely weekend and see you all very soon. Take care and have a fab weekend. Nick O-T NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES STUDENTS WALKING IN TO ROWLEDGE Students should not be walking in to Rowledge either during the school day or after school when they should be in ECAs. The students know this, but please reinforce at home. SUSTAINABILITY FAIR - SUNDAY MAY 22 AT 11AM This Sunday Frensham Heights Charity and Outreach have a stall at Farnham sustainability festival highlighting the life of fabric in our world today. We have pre loved clothes for sale, beautiful hand-made items made by Debbie Hunt, Lynn Goodburne and students as well as presenting a talk in the talk tent at 1pm. All monies raised will be used to provide essential items for our Ukrainian families who are settling in the Farnham area. UKRAINIAN BURSARY APPEAL As you all know, we welcomed our first Ukrainian student this week and are looking forward to welcoming more in the coming weeks. We launched our Ukrainian Bursary Appeal last week and have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the community and want to express our sincere thanks for this. If you would like to make a donation to this fund, to enable us to continue to support these children for as long as they need us, please follow the link below. https://oldfrenshamians.org/supportus “Our contribution feels like a drop in the ocean but together with other Frensham families, we hope to make a difference for future students who don't have the choices our children are given. To gift an education and encourage a future of possibilities and opportunities is the least we can do.” Anthony, Rachel and Sofia (Year 10) CHARITY CYCLE FOR KNOYDART FOUNDATION On Saturday, our Year 12 Knoydart Project students will be cycling the Shipwrights Way to raise money to build some much-needed new benches for the Knoydart community, which they will build themselves when we go there in June. Most of the students coming on the bike ride have not cycled in a long time or ever before so this really will be a huge challenge for them! As a group they are hoping to raise £2000 for the community project. If you have a spare £1 or two to donate towards it, I'm sure they would be very grateful! CLICK HERE TO DONATE THE PIERS MUDDLE CHARITY ART FESTIVAL - Saturday 21st May, 12.30-5pm Many of you will remember the wonderful Art Exhibition a few years ago at Rowledge social club, showcasing the amazing artistic talent of Piers Muddle (then aged 13yrs) where he raised a staggering amount of money for Brain Tumour Research, whilst battling cancer himself. Sadly Piers passed away last year aged only 15yrs and to honour his memory and love of art, the Piers Muddle Charity are holding a fundraising outdoor Art Festival in Rowledge School grounds, where he was once a pupil. This will be a unique interactive art event for children and their families to explore their creative side, take home their masterpieces, have fun playing the XL family games, purchase cards and bags with Piers’ own art work on, eat scrumptious food from The Surrey Horse Box and The Coffee Can, enjoy some live music and hopefully be lucky in the Mega Raffle - all whilst raising awareness and funds for Brain Tumour Research and families who have a children undergoing cancer treatment. INFORMAL FOF VOLUNTEERS GROUP FOF are looking to put on many more events as we begin to enjoy a return to a more normal life. To help with this we are looking to put together a group that we can contact to help out once in a while, either through WhatsApp and/or email. It's nothing permanent and can range from: helping out at an event taking in collections selling 2nd hand uniform meeting up with new parents or just having a catch up and a coffee. You can dip in and out as you like, but it would be a fun way to become more involved in this great Frensham community. If you are interested please click here to email Gayle . ARE YOU ANY GOOD AT INTERVIEWS? On Wednesday, 15th June 2022, we’re running a Careers’ Day for Year 10. This will start off with a Morning Talk from an OF. There will then be an Interview Blast session covering what to expect at an interview and how to prepare for it. After break – with the students asked to dress appropriately for an interview – we’ll have a large Apprentice style group challenge running, and we will also call students individually to have a mock job interview. Do you fancy grilling our Y10s for a generic job? We’ll provide the questions; you do the asking and record how they perform. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to experience interviews ahead of any future job or university applications (which will be coming up quite quickly) and for those students doing BTEC Business, it’s practice for part of their coursework in Y11! If you’re able to help and can spare an hour or two between 10.45am and 12.45pm on Wednesday, 15th June 2022, please get in touch with Lyall, our Head of Careers (lyallreynolds@frensham.org ). Remember, you might even be able to put this down as part of your company’s CSR allocation; especially if you’re able to help on this day or with other careers’ related events – we’re always after speakers and guests to provide insight into the World of Work - for all year groups. The two dovetailed in part but also provided valuable thinking space for our students in terms of opening up possibilities for their futures. Year 10 experienced a week as a Sixth Former with increased freedom, but also accompanying responsibility. They registered at Roberts House and got to use it as a base in between their various bespoke taster A-Level lessons. Meeting new teachers and teaching styles and studying new material in small classes really helped them see what areas will interest them in the future. They are now starting to consider A-Level choices and starting to envisage the path forward after GCSEs. We also had an entrepreneurial workshop, run by 8 Billion Ideas, on Thursday where they learned how to create new ideas, disrupt industries in a positive sense and pitch their new product in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ type environment. It was amazing to see both year groups working so well together and some of the ideas were incredibly impressive from innovations in Hoover technology to medical diagnostic tools and even an underwater submarine to regenerate coral. They had a speed-dating session where they developed interview skills and learned how to communicate better with people that they didn’t know so well. On Monday, Year 10 students and their parents came in the evening to listen to an enthusiastic student panel of Year 12 and 13 students talk about life in the Sixth Form and answer questions. We are very proud of their commitment to the Roberts House community, and it speaks volumes that when we asked for 6 students, we got 11 turn up! They spoke passionately and confidently and then led the tours around Roberts House. Year 12 engaged in a week of activities focused around UCAS applications and how to do them; we also looked at how to use Unifrog as an online platform to research the next steps after Frensham. There were personal statement sessions, seminars on apprenticeships, and Year 12 played a lead role in the entrepreneurial workshop on Thursday. They teamed up with year 10 and guided them throughout the day. Again, we were really impressed with the leadership skills Year 12 displayed throughout the week. Today, both Years 10 and 12 are at Thorpe Park for the day to unwind and relax, embrace new friendships and bring the week to a close in a fun fashion. 8 Billion Ideas 8 Billion Ideas 8 Billion Ideas 8 Billion Ideas 1/9 YEAR 8 VILLAGE Year 8 have spent afternoons this week training for the village project. The Village project is going to be starting on the 13th June and it will see Year 8 build and manage their own community in Frensham Heights woods. In a carousel, Year 8 students have taken part in various kinds of training all focused on team work and independence. These have included safe tool use, shelter building, fire building, orienteering and had in depth discussions about the nature of a functioning community. Overall there has been a great deal of positivity and the students have taken a lot from being in the woods each day. Today – they will continue this training with tool making, more shelter building, first aid and preparation for the village in June. Spirits are high at the time of writing… 1/31 MFL TRIPS TO LONDON BFI Over the past two weeks, the MFL students in Year 10 and 11 spent a day at the British Film Institute to explore and study languages through short films. The morning was packed with interactive activities in French, German and Spanish, followed by an enjoyable break at lunchtime on the Southbank, and an afternoon when we sat back and relaxed to discover a classic foreign film. The Spanish short films definitely caught our attention and left some of us perplexed, even horrified! This is what it is all about: to discover something different, to make us question what we see. All we can say is that the continental 7th art just did that! In true Frensham spirit, the students were great. Merci – Gracias – Danke to everyone for your engagement in the film days. BFI film festival BFI film festival BFI film festival BFI film festival 1/6 PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY Saturdays Pinhole Camera Workshop produced some really successful images – can you identify who the students are in the selfies or where they have captured their images ?! pinhole photography pinhole photography pinhole photography pinhole photography 1/8 YEAR 6 CERAMICS Year 6 took part in a ceramics workshop today with Ash, they had the chance to learn about different aspects of ceramics, watched Ash show them how to throw and then carved faces into their own artwork. year 6 ceramics workshop year 6 ceramics workshop year 6 ceramics workshop year 6 ceramics workshop 1/11 FAREWELL YEAR 11s We said good luck to our Year 11’s last week as they headed off on study leave. It was mocktails and music inside as the weather was not on our side. Students went off with some wise words from their tutors and an exam survival pack. They have been an amazing cohort who have shown great resilience over the past two years. We wish them all the very best of luck in their upcoming exams and look forward to seeing them in their finery for Prom on Monday 27 June. A letter detailing this event will be coming home soon. An here's a link to "Exam Season Parenting: A Crash Course" to help parents support their children during their exams. 1/6 EXAM STRESS POEM It has been a week of assessments for many of our students and although we balance this out with a lot of fun activities in the afternoons, it can still be stressful for many. Here's a poem on of our Year 7 students wrote, in his own time, on exams. Thank you for sharing Alfie. exam stress poem exam stress poem exam stress poem exam stress poem 1/4 YOU'RE HIRED! As part of the exam/activities week, twelve future business leaders were given the ultimate advertising task – to come up with a new brand for Frensham Heights School. They were challenged to design a new logo and slogan; to design and print a prospectus; to create a social media teaser; and to run a tour for prospective parents. Some people might find such a marketing challenge a daunting prospect – not our students. Split into two teams of six, they allocated a team leader and apportioned responsibility to the skills and expertise of their colleagues. Some worked on logo design, some work on the digital teaser, while others took photographs and prepared the tour route. They all worked brilliantly, with enthusiasm and passion for the task – it bodes well as they’re all doing BTEC Business Studies next year. The results were fantastic from the teaser that included drone footage captured by the team, to a chatty and friendly approach to the tours. Those taken on the tour commented; “the first tour guides were polite, answered my questions confidently and came across as genuine and good advocates for Frensham”. The second tour leaders were also praised with one mum commenting; “George and Alex were outgoing and chatty. Their sense of pride in the school was very apparent – and it was a lovely personal tour.” My thanks to the “mums” taken on tour – Emma and Lexi of our marketing team – and to the boys themselves. Brilliant advocates for the school who were rightly proud of their efforts this week. Emma is head of the school’s marketing, and she also said the prospectus invited you to want to read more, with a great tone of voice, their own images used, and a focus on the ‘who’ rather than ‘what’ (linked to our values); which definitely left me with a sense of what the school is about.” Great work! Lyall Head of Business and Enterprise, and Head of Careers – these guys have a future in marketing! Frensham won the toss and elected to bat first. Our first pair was Johnny and Leo who regularly rotated strike and hit the occasional boundary with some lovely shots over the mid-wicket region. They only lost 1 wicket for 18 runs from their 2 overs which provided a solid platform our middle order consisting of Sienna, Lily, Otto, and Finn. • 2021 November Week 4

THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 26th November, 2021 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT MENUS NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK Watch Rick's Video Message RICK KATHERINE A MESSAGE FROM KATHERINE Spotlight on the Junior School Dear Frensham Community, Well, that was a busy week! As you will see there have been birds of prey flying at Frensham and a fabulous author visiting to talk to our children about refugees. The children in the Junior School have been inspired by so many things this week and it was wonderful to share them in our assembly today. We also spoke about how it is important to have a go, make mistakes and turn them into a positive. I shared the amazing book ‘Beautiful oops’ with them which is all about how a mistake might actually open up a new possibility. At Frensham we want our children to be happy to take risks, make mistakes and grow from them just like us as grown-ups! We're also wondering if anyone in our amazing community knows someone lovely who lives locally and would be able to join our team in January to work in our Nursery – Year 3 Late Stay. It would suit someone who would love to come and play, laugh and create things for just two hours every afternoon from 3:30-5:30. They do not need qualifications but experience with younger children would be great even if that's not in a school setting. Perhaps a wonderful grandparent in the local area would be interested in some company (the teachers and children are a delightful bunch who will always brighten up anyone’s day!). Do please push our advert out to anyone you think would be suitable, thank you in advance for any help you can give. www.frensham.org/working-at-frensham Lastly, a big thank you to FoF for your secret squirrel mission to make Christmas special for the children in the Junior School. Thank you for everything you are doing. Have a lovely stormy weekend! Katherine NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES Dropping Off at Reception If you're dropping off or picking up your child at Reception, please drive really carefully and slowly in the area in front of Main House - students and staff are crossing this area at all times of the day. Also, please don't park right in front of the glass Reception doors. Thank you! Christmas Dates to Remember! We're planning lots of festive things, big and little, things for the students in the run up to the Christmas break. Many will be a surprise, but here are a few dates to remember: Friday 3rd - Christmas Jumper Day Friday 10th - Snuggly PJ Day Tuesday 14th - Yrs 4-6 Christmas Showcase + Yrs 7-9 Dinner Dance Wednesday 15th - Christmas Sparkle (clothing / outfits) + Yrs N-3 Chrismas Play + Yrs 10-13 Dinner Dance Thursday 16th - Junior School Christmas Lunch Malawi 2023 On Tuesday evening we officially launched the trip online to Malawi in 2023. Tom from True Adventure presented details of the trip, pinpointing the area, identifying some of the activities we will be undertaking and giving information about this small but beautiful part of Africa. We are opening the trip to any student who is in this years Year 10 and above. Below are the links to the presentation slides shown on Tuesday evening and the parents information pack. PRESENTATION SLIDES PARENTS' INFORMATION PACK If you decide that this unique trip is for you, please fill in the application form by Friday 3rd December. I am hoping that we will be able to have a team get together before we stop for Christmas to start the ball rolling! If anyone has any questions, I have set up a Malawi 2023 team on Teams. I am so looking forward to forming the team and putting plans into action with everyone. Have a great weekend and I hope to hear from you soon, Sally Elevate Memorisation Webinar If you missed the Elevate Memorisation Webinar on Tuesday, you have 10 days to watch the session here - Memorisation Webinar A Big Thank You From Friends of Frensham A big thank you to some of our parents who have been so generous in their donations to our Christmas raffle. Shyne (Year 7 parent) who runs the annual music festival in Guildford on June 3rd & 4th has given us a voucher worth £150 to attend the 2 day event. For more information go to the website http://www.shynefest.uk/ Also Sara (Year 7 parnet) has donated some of her fragrant vegan and cruelty free candles which smell amazing. www.theuniversalsoulcompany.com Another big thank you is to parents in Junior school who are working together to deliver the “swap shop” where the JS students can chose presents for their parents and have them gift wrapped ready for Christmas Day, and a super decorated Santa’s grotto where Santa will greet the students ready to check they are ready for the big day. We have also had a Christmas tree to make the area more festive donated by Castle Street Flowers in Farnham. Christmas Raffle As we approach Christmas, Friends of Frensham are running our fundraising raffle. We have been incredibly lucky to have some amazing events and gifts donated to us from some of our parents, from festival tickets for a family of 4 to Shynefest, to gifts from the Universal Soul company, who sell a stunning range of non-toxic vegan fragrance products of candles and room fragrances. We also have a Christmas hamper, wine gifts and much more. The raffle tickets can be bought on the link here: Christmas Raffle Tickets Christmas Puddings Thank you for your support with Friends of Frensham Christmas puddings this year. We have beaten the past 2 years figures! If you have not ordered your puddings in the set timeline, do not worry. We have ordered some additional puddings to sell in the last week of term in the Aldridge theatre during the Junior School Christmas performances, and also at the music and dance performance on 9th December at the Aldridge theatre. Rowledge Community Choir If you would like to join a friendly choir (no auditions required), Rowledge Community Choir rehearses every Tuesday evening at 7.30pm in the Music School. The choir is currently rehearsing pieces of Christmas music for our Christmas concert on 14th December in St James’ Church, Rowledge. The choir is led by Sam Rolles, a former Frensham pupil, and his father, Edwin, who was formerly Director of Music at Frensham Heights. The cost is £5 per session. Come along for a free taster session. Any tenors or basses particularly welcome. Please see our website: rowledgecommunitychoir.co.uk or contact Liz Bownass-Clark: liz@frensham.org . UPCOMING SCHOOL EVENTS EVENTS PETER PAN - THURS 2 & FRI 3 DECEMBER We began exploring the story of Peter Pan in our Yr 7 & 8 Drama club and we are now bringing you a creative play that the teachers and children have developed whilst meeting together. We have tried to bring this to the stage at a minimal cost to the environment asking the children to make their costumes from re-using, recycling or buying items from charity shops. The set has been designed by Dolly Moon-Kilner in Year 8 and is being built by Shaun and Nicky from our very own Aldridge Theatre using as few new items as possible. Please look out for wood reclaimed from the outdoor theatre and old pieces of set that have been altered to suit this play. All in all - a production with everyone sharing ideas and thinking of the planet whilst enjoying being together rehearsing and performing. Monies raised will be going to Great Ormond Street Hospital, an extremely worthwhile cause. Buy tickets here MUSIC & DANCE CONCERT - 9TH DECEMBER It's time for our Music and Dance Concert. Come along and see the Aldridge alive again with Music and Dance Performances from our Years 7 and up students. Tickets are free, but please book a place below. Set to Jeff Wayne’s iconic soundtrack, this part live-action, part VR/AR production amazed, amused and terrified students in equal measure. Here’s a photo of those that survived the experience! A BIT OF BAKING WITH THE BOARDERS Some of our boarders made some delicious looking cookies with Stef over the weekend. CYBERFIRST GIRLS COMPETITION Starting on Monday, 2 teams of girls are going to be taking part in the National Cyber Security Centre CyberFirst Girls competition. The competition takes place over a period of 10 days and the teams will face a series of online challenges aimed at testing their skills on different areas of cyber security, such as cracking code and working through logic problems. With less than 15% of the workforce in cyber security being female, the primary objective of the competition is to inspire girls to consider career options they may not have thought about. Sarah Cull (Head of IT and Computer Science) has been working alongside a school mum, Paula Page, who is the director of her own Cyber Security company to inspire the girls and to make them aware of potential exciting career opportunities available to them if they enjoy the competition. “This is an incredible opportunity for the girls to try something new and I am hoping they will enjoy the challenges the face over the next 10 days and build some resilience and teamwork skills, as well as their technical skills” explained Sarah. To find out more about the NCSC and what they can offer to all students, visit https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/cyberfirst/overview HADRIAN'S WALL MEDALS To celebrate the success of their trip to Hadrian's Wall in September and the amazing Time Traveller's Guides to Roman Britain, Year 7 students were all awarded with gold ceramic medals made by Amy and Sonia. The students also really enjoyed seeing some of the photos they captured on the trip. MFL PLAYS The MFL department have organised for students studying French, Spanish and German to watch plays performed by Onatti Productions. French students watched Mon Père Ne Me Comprend Pas on 5th November. Spanish students were set to watch En el Campamento today (but this has been postponed for a bit due to postive Covid cases in the cast) and German students will get to watch Horoskop in March. YEAR 8 ART Making decisions this week about how to arrange collage pieces to get best visual results. Considering balance, chaos, jumbles and more. YEAR 7 ART Absolutely amazing work from Year7 whilst we draw our animals and consider how best to simplify shapes and add pattern. We'll done year7. YEAR 5 KESTRELS On Thursday Year 5 welcomed Andy Crowle from Urban Wings to Frensham. Andy is a falconer and he brought two kestrels called Tee-ki and Gizmo with him. He also brought a peregrine falcon called Gus. As part of their Tudor topic this term, the children have been listening to a story set in Tudor times called ‘Treason’ by Berlie Doherty. The main character is given a kestrel by Henry VIII. Andy talked to the children about the stunning birds of prey. He explained that many phrases and words we have such as ‘hoodwinked,’ ‘fed up,’ ‘under your thumb,’ ‘wrapped around your little finger,’ and ‘end of my tether’ originate from the world of falconry. He also explained that servants would have had kestrels, but Royalty would have had the more expensive birds such as the peregrine. He told the children that people would be seen walking in the street with a bird of prey on their hand. The children asked Andy many questions and they were able to wear a thick gauntlet so that Tee-ki could fly and land on them to take a morsel of chicken or Gus could perch comfortably. It was a super afternoon, sunny but cold. We hope that it will be possible to welcome Urban Wings back to Frensham in the future. Please flick through the photos taken during the afternoon. THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE Year 7s have been investigating types of waves. They used slinkies to demonstrate the motion of these types of waves. Year 8 are exploring density and pressure. We constructed a Cartesian diver and observed the effects of increased pressure on buoyancy. Some of our Year 9s have been discovering osmosis and how the mass of potatoes change depending on the concentration of the solution they’re in. Year 11s have dived into learning about the inheritance of genetic traits by building reebop marshmallow organisms based on the genes inherited. YEAR 9 HORIZONS - CAREERS AND GCSE OPTIONS On 17th and 24th November in their Developing Horizons lessons, Year 9 spent time thinking about careers and their future pathway at Frensham. As part of this, they heard from the teachers who lead the 'new' options that will be on offer for them in September 2023. These subjects are Esports, Business, Performing Arts, Sports Studies, Computer Science, Graphic Communication and Photography. The Year 9 students were engaged throughout and asked a number of excellent questions. There was a definite buzz around school following this as they excitedly looked through the options booklets and digested what they had learned. The student feedback was very positive: "The sessions were good, the options session helped me understand about the process and how it works. It was interesting to learn about the new courses that I haven't studied." "I enjoyed it because I learned more about the subjects I could do." – Lexie "I definitely think it was useful as it widened my views on what I can take." – Heidi YR R & 1 FRENCH A group of dinosaurs came to French last week! Inspired by our one third story “How the dinosaur got it’s shoes”, Years R and 1 put on their masks for a video performance where they introduced themselves in French and talked about their own chaussures. The have been learning numbers, colours, introductions, simple instructions and adjectives whilst reading about Terrance T-Rex, designing masks and running around the playground hunting for my shoes! They have been fantastique!! TEALIGHTS IN CERAMICS Years 6 - 9 have been making animal tea light/candle holders, ready to light up the dark evenings. ADVENT CALENDAR Hamilton House is getting festive with the addition of Debbie's fantastic handmade advent calendar! YEAR 6 AUTHOR VISIT In Year 6 we have been learning about refugees. Last week we were joined by Danielle (Draven’s mum) who talked to us about her work in Calais, shared lots of her own experiences as well as those of people she has worked with along the way. She shared several stories with us, including one about her friend who is a UN worker and had to return to England in a refrigeration van. Year 6 really enjoyed this and were able to link lots of their learning from topic, English and art lessons. We have been inspired by our learning and want to support local refugee families and have been in touch with Farnham help for Refugees and Farnham Foodbank. We discussed this with Olivia, who was hoping to complete a reverse advent calendar, and have decided to put our ideas together. From the 1st – 10th December we will be collecting items, we would love it if the children in the Junior school could bring a different item in each day and there will be collection spots in the Junior School Hall and 4-6 atrium. We have asked what they would find most useful, and they have said: UHT cows’ milk, long life fruit juice, orange squash, chocolate bars, sweets, snacks (not nuts), tinned carrots, tinned peas and tinned tomatoes. Look out for our posters around school for any more information. Today Ele Fountain, author of Boy87, came to speak with us as part of the enrichment programme. She shared information about her time in Ethiopia and how that inspired her writing. She also talked about the process involved to publish a book and the children had a chance to ask her lots of questions. We then took part in a creative writing workshop. This involved them creating a ‘tree’ plan, they are all enthused about writing these stories and left the workshop with the challenge to return after lunch with their first line ready to engage a reader. YEAR 10 CHARITY STALL Last Friday Jeff’s tutor group in Year 10 created a hot chocolate and cookies stall with the help of a few Year 7 & 8 outreach volunteers. They raised £75 in aid of Lymphoma Action. Thank you to you for raising our awareness and adding to Hugo’s fundraising total overall. AUTUMN TERM CLIMBING It’s fantastic to see that Climbing is as popular as ever! Due to long waiting lists for our regular climbing club we have managed to expand opportunities by offering climbing at Surrey Sports Park during games afternoons. FIRST AID: SIXTH FORM & DofE This week saw our Sixth Formers and Bronze DofE students learn the essential life skills of how to perform CPR and use a defibrillator on a non breathing casualty’ Our year 12’s are currently working hard towards gaining their Emergency First Aid At Work Qualification’ whilst our Bronze DofE Students are covering this as part of their DofE first aid training an integral aspect of our expeditions program. • 2022 May Week 1

THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 6th May, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK Dear Parents I am pleased to let you know that our first Ukrainian student joins us shortly, and I am hopeful of some other students joining us soon. You will appreciate, I am sure, that choosing which students can come to Frensham is a very hard task as we know that all students in such difficult circumstances would benefit from an education here. We are working hard to do our best to match applicants to the school to ensure that they thrive. Last weekend we played host to our second TEDx Frensham event, and it was an absolute triumph. I want to thank the wonderful group of parent volunteers and staff members who made it all happen. We had a wonderful array of speakers who spoke on the theme of ‘Human Together’. Topics ranged from celebrating autism, dyslexia and those who stutter, to combating youth violence and how to cultivate an interest in schoolchildren for design and architecture. One of the most memorable was a talk delivered by Old Frenshamian Steven Frank, a Holocaust survivor. Steven has spoken to our students before, and his story of surviving the horrors of war perpetrated by an egotistical and ruthless dictator could not have been more relevant with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. I am sorry that more members of our community were not there to hear Steven and our other amazing speakers as I know that all who attended were deeply moved. On Saturday 14th of May, we hold our next Open Morning at school. If you know of families who may be interested in attending, please do tell them to register as soon as possible as space is limited. With a highly successful inspection report achieved, interest in the school is high and we would love to welcome as many families as we can next Saturday. Have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes Rick A MESSAGE FROM NICK OT Dear Parents, The Junior School is now in full flow, the sun is shining and it’s been an exciting week for all. There have been many highlights in the Junior School learning spaces this week that are just too good to not share. Year 5 has been showing their understanding of pollination and plant life-cycles through some excellent art and comic strip work and Year 2 has been researching the rainforest layers and making chameleons. Nursery and Reception children have been visiting new countries in a real inflatable canoe and all I need to say for Year 1 is ‘Tadpoles’!! Year 6 has been exploring the Ancient Greeks and are in the process of writing incredible character descriptions of Hades (God of the Underworld) and Year 3 has been on the seed germination trail and is potentially expecting some interesting results! To cap it all off Year 4 has had an inspirational week considering plastic pollution and creating River Raps. The theme of plastic pollution also transcended into the Year 4-6 assembly on Tuesday where visiting speaker Danielle challenged the children to think about our use of plastic as human beans. She shared alternative ways that could be used when planning a party (e.g amazing paper pom-poms instead of balloons, steel straws instead of plastic and all-natural bath bombs instead of plastic party bag favours.) The children were particularly taken by a sandwich bag made from mushrooms! Certainly food for thought and inspiration for this generation to engage with. Hopefully one of many impactful future talks across the whole Junior School. This Monday we have the next Junior Town Hall event. You should have received an email invite to this event earlier in the week (with an attached form to fill in please). Rick and I are keen to build on the success of the last event as the feedback, ideas and questions gleaned from it have proven to be highly supportive across this last term. I wanted to finish off my communication this week with the exciting news of two new appointments in the Junior School. These appointments see Meghan Guy take up the role of JS Assistant Head of Pastoral and Wellbeing and Jade Lefevre take up the role of JS Assistant Head of Teaching and Learning. These roles will be pivotal in the JSLT (Junior School Leadership Team) and I am very excited by the skills, dynamic thinking and energy that both Meghan and Jade will bring to the team. They will both be at the Town Hall event for you to meet and chat with on Monday, as well as Honesty (Head of EY) and Kelly (Head of JS Learning Support). I hope you have all had a lovely week and that you have a great weekend in store. Take care and have fun, Nick O-T NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP Yr.9 – 13 Pinhole Photography workshop – come along a make a pinhole camera from a beer can! This year we have had some amazing success. All cloned from a single cauliflower head/floret with about 30 new plantlets growing! The students used aseptic techniques and then propagation to ensure no contamination and left them over the Easter to grow. They had over 95% success rate. 1/2 YEAR 8 LINOCUTS Finally we are at the fun stage of printing from the lino cuts. Such a wonderful set of outcomes. Some on rust dyed fabric squares. Lovely work. A WEEK OF FOREST SCHOOL AND OUTDOOR EDUCATION Reflecting back on last week, Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed the warmth of the fire pit on offer, sipping hot chocolate and roasting marshmallows, as part of their overnight stay in preparation for their residential trip. On the Friday, they took on Jacob’s ladder and the ‘pizza challenge’ using our recently purchased soft archery equipment. On Friday afternoon, Year 1 ventured away from their own forest school site and ended up playing a big game of ‘eagles eye’ by the Mushrooms, later using their hawk eyes to spot any new developments as we are now well into spring. Year 3 kick-started their week back with some amazing art prints using Plaster of Paris, whilst a handful of children learnt how to tie a ‘clove hitch’ and a ‘square lash’ to make a base for a treehouse platform. Amazing work Year 3! Year 4 got close and personal and were challenged to find the ‘coolest thing’ in the forest, using our powerful microscopes, analysing every detail on their top 5 items, before sharing it with their peers. Finally, Years 5&6 unexpectedly had to apply a large amount of maths during their outdoor education lesson, taking on more epic soft archery challenges; the Points Challenge and Level Up! 1/10 TEDxFRENSHAM The community TEDx event on Saturday was a wonderful day for everyone who came - speakers, attendees and volunteer team alike. The Aldridge was buzzing with inspiring talks and discussion. Here's a quote from Old Frenshamian Steven Frank who was one of the speakers: "I kept thinking of Trevor Aldridge and this wonderful theatre legacy in his memory. If only he knew what was in store when we were there at school together all those years ago... It was one of the most memorable and inspiring days in my life, giving hope to mankind during these troubled and somewhat lawless times. A real tonic." 1/18 THIS WEEK IN HAMILTON HOUSE The summer term is always the best one for boarders ….. such beautiful grounds to live within and lots of time spent exploring them. And this week, birthday time too … Please contact Lynn Goodburne with any boarding requests this term. 1/6 YR 7 & 8 VENTURED OUT & VOLUNTEERED So off we went to Gostrey Brightwells to share a singing session this week with a guest, Munro (the golden retriever) Everyone enjoyed meeting him and he behaved well as we shared our voices together. It was a delightful afternoon and the children were wonderful at listening and sharing time with our elderly friends. 1/2 SUMMER TERM BREAKTIME Breaktimes in the warmer seasons give everyone a chance to have a little down time outside. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 10th December, 2021 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT MENUS NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK Watch Rick's Video Message RICK A MESSAGE FROM KATHERINE Dear Frensham community, With only four more days before we break up, we intend to put in as much festive fun as possible in the run up to the holiday! It has been a real treat to welcome the children into school today in their PJs. Frensham is such a friendly special place, but even more so when everyone is in their snuggly outfits. I am sorry that we are having to make last minute changes to our plans for next week, but I really do hope you understand we do not want the events to influence anyone's Christmas plans as we are so close to the big day. With isolation periods of 10 days we want to ensure everyone can have an enjoyable time. Our Years 4-6 showcase and Years N-3 play started to take form today with some technical rehearsals. All the children will have the opportunity to watch each other on Monday for their Dress rehearsals. Years 4 to 6 Christmas Showcase On Tuesday, we start with our Years 4 to 6 Christmas showcase, and we do ask that parents bring along their singing voices because we will be asking you to join in a few numbers! As we will be outside, please wrap up warm and seating will be available for those who are unable to stand. This will take place in the front courtyard outside of Main House after drop off at 8.45am. The event is expected to last no longer than 45 minutes. Years N to 3 Lights Camel Action: The Sequin Followed hot on its heels is Lights Camel Action: The Sequin with Nursery to Year 3. As this event could not be moved outside, we have made the decision to continue this event in the Theatre but move to two performances to further reduce the amount of people watching. Performance one - 9.30am you are welcome to pop home and arrive at 9.15am or you can make your way over to the front of Main House for hot chocolate and mince pies, after Drop off, before being taken to the Theatre for 9.15am to be shown to your seats. Performance two - 2.30pm as planned and will be without refreshments. Please do arrive at 2.15pm to be shown to your seats. We still ask that only two people per child come and watch across the two performances to limit numbers. Please fill in the form below to confirm you can attend and which performance as we are ideally trying to split the adults in attendance across the two productions. Thank you so much for your flexibility. https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=eAZCpZbL5k6HffgdfK3cA_5aTwAMJEdFpPY8skfwEOVUMkVPRFNLVFFXQlFVQkk5VzlMUUQwT09ESy4u Just a reminder that Late Stay on Thursday will only run until 4.10pm to support parents with children in Year 7 and above. CLICK FOR THE ADVENT CALENDAR YEAR 5 TUDOR BANQUET Our Year 5 children were treated to a Tudor banquet to continue bringing their topic to life (after flying a kestrel last week). Complete with roast fowl, mead (ginger beer) and a court jester - their lunch was the envy of the rest of the dining room! PETER PAN It was exciting and delightful to be back in our wonderful Aldridge Theatre performing Peter Pan last week. The children worked hard to create and find costumes from recycled and re-used clothing and the set was mainly created from reclaimed wood and items that live in the school, in an attempt to make everyone think more about our common learnt expectations versus current possible actions in a wish to protect our planet. YEAR 8 SHAKESPEARE IN A BOX COMPETITION The culmination of the study of a Shakespeare play in Year 8 this term is a memory box presentation. These have been happening across each of the classes ready for the grand final to be judged next week! The competition is really hotting up as these pictures from Zoe’s group prove! SATURDAY CERAMICS WORKSHOP Michele and Ashley led a really successful ceramics workshop on Saturday. YEAR 8 ART BOOKS Great work over the term is all held inside a collaged book cover. Watch out Year 8 parents as these should all be coming home sometime soon. Thank you for all your creative energies! YEAR 9 MASTER COPIERS Our Year 9 students have been making copies of Van Gogh drawings. Really lively responses which will be presented in a sketchbook page. ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS IN YEAR 6 Over the last 6 weeks, Year 6 have been testing different electrical circuits and completing different challenges. They have been working towards building a working prototype of a festive light design of their choice. These were presented in a Dragon’s Den-esque style! The children were able to show these as a scientific illustration, drawing and physical prototype with lights, motors, and buzzers. They worked incredibly hard and were able to answer the Dragon’s tricky questions! CYBERFIRST GIRLS COMPETITION Our two teams have been taking part in the CyberFirst Girls competition over the past week. The competition closes this week and both teams working hard during every break, lunch and after school to become Super Cyber Sleuths. Both teams managed to achieve very respectable scores of around 1100 points which is incredible and they have all learnt some great skills. Lily said she has most enjoyed getting the opportunity to do something different with friends whilst building her teamwork and cyber skills. YEAR 4 - 3D CHRISTMAS CARDS Year 4 have worked hard to create beautiful Christmas cards to send out to local residential homes. The 3D Christmas tree inside the card was pretty tricky for them, but the children persisted and achieved these lovely cards. Some local residents will be pleased! ECOHEIGHTS BIRD BOXES On Wednesday Year 6 were invited to make birdboxes. The Eco Heights team, specifically Maxi and Sebastien, had been hard at work creating packs including detailed instructions and labelled wood. Year 6 were split into small groups and worked alongside Year 8 students to create a bird box, overseen by Neil and a few sixth formers. They were able to use an electric drill to secure the parts and then sanded the outside. After they completed the bird box, the groups went out onto the school grounds to find a suitable tree. They had to ensure that the tree was wide and tall enough whilst looking for a location that was easily accessible by the birds. Look out for these popping up, we are hoping to see birds using them in the new year! Thank you for all the hard work that was put into this project! A LEVEL PSYCHOLOGY IN ACTION EVENT Today, our A Level Psychology students have had the amazing opportuntiy, thanks to Andrew Moore, to get involved in the online event "Psychology in Action". This event had a wide-ranging programme examining the theories and applications of psychology in the modern world. Five incredibly engaging sessions with speakers from academia and industry helped the students realise their potential and discover the impact they can have on the world - also complemented by a special session on examination success. Sessions included: How to Engineer an Extreme Emotion with Brendan Walker, Professor of Creative Industries at Middlesex University The Gendered Brain with Gina Rippon, Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Neuroimaging at the Aston Brain Centre The Psychology of a Magician with Dr Matt Pritchard, award-winning magician The Perils of Perception: Why We're Wrong About Nearly Everything with Bobby Duffy, Professor of Public Policy and Director of the Policy Institute at King’s College London Mastering Memory with Alina Ivan, part of the Braintastic! Science team EARLY YEARS CHRISTMAS CRAFT AND SONG SESSION On Tuesday parents in Nursery and Reception joined us in an outdoor, socially distanced Christmas Craft and Song session. Everyone made a Christmas tree with their parent using sticks and twine. We then battled storm Barra as Judith accompanied us to 'Jingle Bells' and some other songs. We value process, content and relationships in Early Years and this event enabled our families to enjoy that. Seeing the expressions on everyone's faces demonstrated how much just spending time together in this way is critical for our youngest children's development and happiness. Thank you for coming in such weather! STUDENT TEACHING ASSISTANTS Each Wednesday a group of our Sixth Formers are visiting Rowledge C of E School and working in an individual classroom to learn about life in another school in a supportive capacity. Next term, we are planning to deliver workshops on well-being, Dance, Drama, Geography and Languages - a true partnership. SNUGGLY PJ DAY It was snuggly PJ today and students and staff could be spotted around the site keeping warm in their snuggly pjs and onesies. From the Queen visiting Year 1 to Year 4 conducting their own powerful Storm vocabulary performance - from Year 6 having an overnight camp-out to Year 5 learning Ukrainian and creating messages of support - to Year 3 getting creative and using materials to explore fractions. Not to mention the Early Years using claw hammers and Year 2 beginning their wander through their topic of Rainforests - it has simply been a fantastic first week back at school and one that offers an exciting marker for the summer term ahead. I hope the feedback coming home has been equally positive and that you have had a good week too. When the sun shines at Frensham there is always that extra spark in the air and we have certainly seen that this week within all classes. It has been great to see so many classes taking their learning outside and lovely examples of this have been sketching with Hannah on Main Lawn, Science with Esme out in the 4-6 playground, a whole bevvy of JS ECA’s in full-flow and a JS assembly out in front of Main House and its unbelievable view. We have also been spending the week launching our focus on the ‘Spirit of Togetherness’ with the children and this was further represented in a fun-fuelled whole Junior School Assembly in the theatre this morning. Please do keep checking in with your child’s class SeeSaw blog for further updates and pictures and keep an eye out for the new Friday Snapshot email. The Friday Snapshot will talk you through the headlines of your child’s learning experiences of the week gone, let you know what is coming in the week ahead and will also share any other key information that should be on your radar. Next week I intend to share the key dates for the summer term with you and will also endeavour to showcase any other wonderful learning moments in the Junior School that I come across. Until then, the Junior School Staff and I wish you a fab bank holiday weekend and we will see you on Tuesday for the next week of learning, experience and adventure! Take care and enjoy your time. In the boxes, they are including high-quality, bilingual books, magazines, activities, school packs and tablets pre-loaded with educational and language apps and eBooks in English and Ukrainian. The tablets will also have SIM cards and mobile data allowance, so the children can stay in touch with friends and family displaced around the world. RSVP HERE THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM THIS WEEK ELEVATE EDUCATION SEMINAR Elevate Education came into school to run a Year 9 study skills session on Time Management this week - perfect timing, as they work towards their Year 9 assessments. The session shared ideas on how to prioritise time, how to produce a weekly planner, how to create a study group, and how to avoid procrastination. This session will be followed up by another session called Study Sensai at the start of Year 10. The students took away with them a handout with ideas on how to study more efficiently. I hope this was useful and the students took something away from the session. Information which students may find useful can be found on their website. https://uk.elevateeducation.com/home They also run a number of useful parent seminars. Details of these will be emailed home as and when they occur. YRS 11 & 13 FUN Years 11 and 13 took part in some fun activities this week before heading off for study leave. 1/18 1/20 GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO ICELAND Our Geography expedition to Southern Iceland over the Easter Holidays was a truly enriching experience, both socially and educationally. The activities and landscape sparked curiosity and creativity in our students well beyond the remit of Geography. As Linn’s film shows we packed in a fantastic variety of experiences over our 3 night/4 day stay. Our group of 29 students and 4 staff, started our adventure walking through lava caves, immersing ourselves in the closest conditions to complete darkness that many of us will have experienced. We had a fascinating visit to a geothermal power station to help us understand how the Icelandic population power and heat their homes. This also gave us a better insight into why our showers smelt of eggs! Equipped with crampons and ice picks we trekked across part of the Solheimajokull Glacier and enjoyed the spray of one of Iceland’s many beautiful waterfalls by walking all the way behind it. It wasn’t all action however, in keeping with Icelandic tradition we relaxed in thermally heated water in both hot tubs and an open-air pool. We visited the mid-Atlantic ridge to see the division of the North American and European plates, alongside Thingvellir, Iceland’s first parliament. Great Geysir (a spouting hot spring), bubbling volcanic pools, Gulfoss (largest waterfall in Europe), a trip to a dairy farm serving delicious ice cream and walk to the Hard Rock Café along the sea front in Reykjavík via a film set completed our final day. Alas, we never quite got to see a full display of the Northern Lights, although some greening of the sky was reported. However, new friendships were forged and minds and bodies stretched by new experiences. The students were a credit to the school, they were polite, genuinely great company and good humoured, even at 4am on our day of departure! Their engagement and awe in the landscape inspired us all to look at it with new eyes. Our display showing the pictures of our wonderful adventure will be coming to the Geography department soon. Thanks to Will Paskell, Dan Pullen, Linn Kathenes-McGuigan and Karen McBride, Accounts and Support Staff for their help in running the trip. Student comments below:- ‘Best four days ever’ ‘I built a strong connection with people on the trip’ ‘It was mentally healing to be in a new and different place’ ‘So good to get to know people in different years’ ‘Each destination was equally as brilliant, and the bus journeys were fun’ ‘Looking for the Northern lights from hot tubs was amazing’ ‘It was all fab-tastic!’ COSTUME OF SPORT Building on the success of the Regency Morning Talk delivered by Dr Kim Simpson and Clio O’Sullivan as part of our World Book celebrations back in March, the links between Chawton House and Frensham Heights continue! Zoë and Sam from the English Department supported the official opening of the latest exhibition A Costume of Sport which was Clio’s first curation. We look forward to working alongside Chawton House to develop student enrichment opportunities and community collaboration projects in the future. 1/2 WELCOMING UKRANIAN FAMILIES We welcomed 15 local Ukranian families to meet, socialise and select items from the pop up shop of donated toys and clothes. This was captured on BBC South Today last night. It was lovely to meet the families that have travelled so far under such uncertain conditions for the last few weeks. Huge thanks to helping students; Chloe, Olivia, Theo and Kitty and teachers too. 1/2 A ROYAL VISIT Our Year 1 students were treated to a royal visit this week when the Queen came to tea to celebrate her upcoming Jubilee. They all behaved impeccable using their best bows and curtsies and asked many questions about her life and responsibilities. They had a royal tea with cucumber sandwiches and jam tarts. 1/12 YEAR 4 THIS WEEK We held our Yrs 4-6 assembly outside on Tuesday – it was glorious weather and a gorgeous setting. Love it!Beautiful! So cute! 1/2 YEAR 9 ART Just to get back to ourselves after the break some of our Year 9 students lost themselves in pastel creations of the moon. 1/3 SAILING INTO THE LONG WEEKEND Nine sailors from years 5 and 6 took part in the first Sailing Club session of the summer term and we'd love to let you know just how great they were! With a mixture of some who have sailed a little, one who has sailed a lot and the majority who have never sailed at all, our time on the water was a great success. The sailors covered the basics; parts of the boat and what they do, how to control our speed, steer and turn our boat around. A special mention for Alexander who mastered falling out of his boat and to Ava for being so helpful to her friends who were learning the ropes! It was great to see everyone out in their boats and I looked forward to seeing them all progress over the coming weeks. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 25th March, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK CLICK HERE FOR RICK'S MESSAGE NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES FRENSHAM HEIGHTS SCHOOL TRIPS TO BE CARBON NEUTRAL The school are aware of the impact on the environment of our activities. UKRAINIAN REFUGEES MEETING As a school we are looking carefully as to how we can best support this situation as well as educate ourselves and come together as one community in the coming weeks. To that end, Lynn G is closely communicating with efforts in our locality and we are now aware of some of our parents who are connected with the same group. TUESDAY 29th MARCH - BALLROOM 7.30pm meeting for any families that are interested in hosting Ukrainian family members. 8.15pm meeting for anyone looking to be a support to the Ukrainian families, offering transport, activities, meals, etc Please do contact Lynngoodburne@frensham.org and she is happy to phone you personally and discuss any of the complexities we are discussing community wide about how we can be supportive right now. LAST CHANCE FOR CAR PARK SURVEY All parents should have received an email inviting them to give their feedback on the car park and drop-off procedures. Please take a couple of minutes to fill in the survey here . PARENT VOICE REPS NEEDED Parent Voice are seeking two new reps to join their volunteer team to cover Year 6 and Year 8 starting in the Summer Term. Becoming a rep is a positive way to get involved at Frensham. Parent Voice is made up of volunteers whose role is to provide a point of contact for feedback, to represent wider parent views fairly and without bias, provide support on general issues and develop opportunities to collaborate with parents and staff to support the joint interests of the school community. Find out more here. For more information and to put yourself forward, please contact: Chair Vicki Nixon vicki@nixonconsultancy.com , Vice Chair Emma Tweed emmatweedradford@icloud.com or Secretary Isobel Hanmer thehanmers@gmail.com MALAWI INFORMATION MEETING – FINAL CALL FOR TEAM MEMBERS FROM YEAR 10 AND ABOVE! On Tuesday 29th March we will be holding an information evening about the Malawi 2023 trip at 7pm in the Billiard Room (please park in the drop-off zone). Anyone who has signed up for the trip, or who is thinking about joining us, is very welcome to come along – parents and students! Linn and I would like to finalise the team so that we can start putting some dates in the diary for pre – trip preparation. I have had quite a few people contact me about the trip so it would be lovely to hear what you have decided to do. IMPORTANT – after talking to Becks and Linn, we would welcome anyone who will be in Year 10, September 2022, to think about coming on the trip. You are very welcome to join us on Tuesday. Looking forward to seeing as many of you who can come as possible! Sally SECOND HAND PE KIT SALE Friends of Frensham will be selling second hand PE kit outside the Aldridge on Tuesday 29th March. CAREERS OPPORTUNITY FOR YEAR 12 Do you have an idea for an Etsy type shop? Do you think you can sell more than your peers? Do you have a flair for persuasion? If you’re answering yes, come and speak to Lyall. On Founders’ Day in July, we have two stalls for Year 12 students to show off their entrepreneurial flair. This can be a solo-project or a team effort. Essentially, if you have an idea for a product or service that you could sell through a market stall then come forward. I want to add an element of competition – can you outperform the other team at the other market stall? Imagine you’re auditioning for The Apprentice; here’s your chance to shine. All ideas are welcome, speak to Lyall to help facilitate your vision. Click here for more information CALLING ALL GAMERS! Right now, we’re looking into the possibility of running an ECA involving gaming. Next year we’re launching the eSports qualification which will see a club set up with Tim and directly supporting those students. But what about everyone else? The chance to play games, socially interact, compare types of gameplay, and build in a little bit of maths to devise tournament play and handicap systems to enable everyone to have a fair chance, is a great way of enhancing students’ development and learning. We hope to be able to trial this ECA in the summer term but need a games console to play the games! If you can donate or let us borrow an Xbox of PS5 (with any games and controllers) that would be greatly appreciated and well-received. If we can get hold of one, the club should run! If you can help, let Lyall know . JUNIOR SCHOOL EGG DECORATING EGG-STRAVAGANZA As we near the end of term we would like to invite all families to join in our Egg-stravagant, egg decorating eggs-hibition.. The aim is to create/decorate an egg or eggs in a theme or setting of your choice. All creations need to be no bigger than a shoe box (in order to fit on classroom windowsills and be carried by your child!) If you are an egg-free family please use craft or plastic eggs (seen recently at Squires Garden Centre). Whole family involvement is encouraged! Please see this article from The Guardian for ideas https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/gallery/2013/mar/28/easter-egg-competition-winners-in-pictures No prizes but plenty of glory for creativity and puns! All entries to be submitted to class teachers by Tuesday, 29th March at morning drop off. All creations will be returned to entrants on last day of term, Friday, 1st April. All entries will be photographed, and a gallery will be published in the whole school newsletter. We look forward to seeing your creations and using this to raise community spirits. TOY SALE Last Friday we held another toy sale, this time in the Nursery to 3 courtyard. Thanks to Paula and Tim Page, all the items were displayed to tempt our younger buyers! As it was fine weather, we also took a chance to sell ice lollies as well. The total amount raised was about £120 so we have, overall, raised about £260 from both sales. This money will be making its way to our friends in Malawi where it will go a very long way to provide supplies. A huge thank you to everyone who donated, sold or bought! They discussed why the work of archaeologists were so important, the tools that were used by them and why everything is documented along the journey. They were then presented with a variety of tools to support them in excavating their shell fossil. We have been learning about evolution in class and why fossils are so important in understanding the journey that life on Earth has been through, we have also studied Mary Anning and created beautiful double page spreads all about her life. 1/16 GREENPOWER This week was exciting as we worked on lots of finishing touches to the car. We fitted the bodywork and refitted the rear axle and front end. We also permanently attached the steering wheel and communications button to it so the driver can communicate with the rest of the team at races. We hope to get the car out on the Astro before the end of term so everyone can have a feel for the car before we get it out in our first race after easter. I worked on writing the newsletter article and took some photos of the team hard at work. I am sure I can speak for all the team when I say that I am buzzing with excitement for the car to be finished. Written by Callie 7SVC 1/6 A LEVEL PHOTOGRAPHY Another busy Yr.13 A Level photography week in and out of the studio! 1/4 THIS WEEK'S MAIN HOUSE HEROES Well done to Belize and Kai for a superb couple of weeks around the house.
