THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 29th April, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK CLICK FOR RICK'S MESSAGE A MESSAGE FROM NICK OT Dear Parents, I’m not sure where to begin to be honest! From the Queen visiting Year 1 to Year 4 conducting their own powerful Storm vocabulary performance - from Year 6 having an overnight camp-out to Year 5 learning Ukrainian and creating messages of support - to Year 3 getting creative and using materials to explore fractions. Not to mention the Early Years using claw hammers and Year 2 beginning their wander through their topic of Rainforests - it has simply been a fantastic first week back at school and one that offers an exciting marker for the summer term ahead. I hope the feedback coming home has been equally positive and that you have had a good week too. When the sun shines at Frensham there is always that extra spark in the air and we have certainly seen that this week within all classes. It has been great to see so many classes taking their learning outside and lovely examples of this have been sketching with Hannah on Main Lawn, Science with Esme out in the 4-6 playground, a whole bevvy of JS ECA’s in full-flow and a JS assembly out in front of Main House and its unbelievable view. We have also been spending the week launching our focus on the ‘Spirit of Togetherness’ with the children and this was further represented in a fun-fuelled whole Junior School Assembly in the theatre this morning. Please do keep checking in with your child’s class SeeSaw blog for further updates and pictures and keep an eye out for the new Friday Snapshot email. The Friday Snapshot will talk you through the headlines of your child’s learning experiences of the week gone, let you know what is coming in the week ahead and will also share any other key information that should be on your radar. Next week I intend to share the key dates for the summer term with you and will also endeavour to showcase any other wonderful learning moments in the Junior School that I come across. Until then, the Junior School Staff and I wish you a fab bank holiday weekend and we will see you on Tuesday for the next week of learning, experience and adventure! Take care and enjoy your time. Nick O-T NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES BOOKMARK BOX FOR UKRAINE The charity Bookmark Reading (whose usual purpose is to volunteer in primary schools to assist children in the UK with reading support) have recently committed to raising £1m to support Ukrainian children who are arriving in the UK. They want to help them start their new chapter in the UK feeling secure, welcome, and inspired. They have therefore created the Bookmark Box for Ukraine, working with literacy experts to carefully curate a box filled with literacy resources and tools to help these children build their familiarity with the English language. In the boxes, they are including high-quality, bilingual books, magazines, activities, school packs and tablets pre-loaded with educational and language apps and eBooks in English and Ukrainian. The tablets will also have SIM cards and mobile data allowance, so the children can stay in touch with friends and family displaced around the world. Please click here for the donation link and further information. LAPTOPS IN SCHOOL Can we please remind you that all students in Years 7 to 13 must have a fully-charged laptop in school everyday. RSVP HERE THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM THIS WEEK ELEVATE EDUCATION SEMINAR Elevate Education came into school to run a Year 9 study skills session on Time Management this week - perfect timing, as they work towards their Year 9 assessments. The session shared ideas on how to prioritise time, how to produce a weekly planner, how to create a study group, and how to avoid procrastination. This session will be followed up by another session called Study Sensai at the start of Year 10. The students took away with them a handout with ideas on how to study more efficiently. I hope this was useful and the students took something away from the session. Information which students may find useful can be found on their website. https://uk.elevateeducation.com/home They also run a number of useful parent seminars. Details of these will be emailed home as and when they occur. YRS 11 & 13 FUN Years 11 and 13 took part in some fun activities this week before heading off for study leave. 1/18 1/20 GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO ICELAND Our Geography expedition to Southern Iceland over the Easter Holidays was a truly enriching experience, both socially and educationally. The activities and landscape sparked curiosity and creativity in our students well beyond the remit of Geography. As Linn’s film shows we packed in a fantastic variety of experiences over our 3 night/4 day stay. Our group of 29 students and 4 staff, started our adventure walking through lava caves, immersing ourselves in the closest conditions to complete darkness that many of us will have experienced. We had a fascinating visit to a geothermal power station to help us understand how the Icelandic population power and heat their homes. This also gave us a better insight into why our showers smelt of eggs! Equipped with crampons and ice picks we trekked across part of the Solheimajokull Glacier and enjoyed the spray of one of Iceland’s many beautiful waterfalls by walking all the way behind it. It wasn’t all action however, in keeping with Icelandic tradition we relaxed in thermally heated water in both hot tubs and an open-air pool. We visited the mid-Atlantic ridge to see the division of the North American and European plates, alongside Thingvellir, Iceland’s first parliament. Great Geysir (a spouting hot spring), bubbling volcanic pools, Gulfoss (largest waterfall in Europe), a trip to a dairy farm serving delicious ice cream and walk to the Hard Rock Café along the sea front in Reykjavík via a film set completed our final day. Alas, we never quite got to see a full display of the Northern Lights, although some greening of the sky was reported. However, new friendships were forged and minds and bodies stretched by new experiences. The students were a credit to the school, they were polite, genuinely great company and good humoured, even at 4am on our day of departure! Their engagement and awe in the landscape inspired us all to look at it with new eyes. Our display showing the pictures of our wonderful adventure will be coming to the Geography department soon. Thanks to Will Paskell, Dan Pullen, Linn Kathenes-McGuigan and Karen McBride, Accounts and Support Staff for their help in running the trip. Student comments below:- ‘Best four days ever’ ‘I built a strong connection with people on the trip’ ‘It was mentally healing to be in a new and different place’ ‘So good to get to know people in different years’ ‘Each destination was equally as brilliant, and the bus journeys were fun’ ‘Looking for the Northern lights from hot tubs was amazing’ ‘It was all fab-tastic!’ COSTUME OF SPORT Building on the success of the Regency Morning Talk delivered by Dr Kim Simpson and Clio O’Sullivan as part of our World Book celebrations back in March, the links between Chawton House and Frensham Heights continue! Zoë and Sam from the English Department supported the official opening of the latest exhibition A Costume of Sport which was Clio’s first curation. We look forward to working alongside Chawton House to develop student enrichment opportunities and community collaboration projects in the future. 1/2 WELCOMING UKRANIAN FAMILIES We welcomed 15 local Ukranian families to meet, socialise and select items from the pop up shop of donated toys and clothes. This was captured on BBC South Today last night. It was lovely to meet the families that have travelled so far under such uncertain conditions for the last few weeks. Huge thanks to helping students; Chloe, Olivia, Theo and Kitty and teachers too. 1/2 A ROYAL VISIT Our Year 1 students were treated to a royal visit this week when the Queen came to tea to celebrate her upcoming Jubilee. They all behaved impeccable using their best bows and curtsies and asked many questions about her life and responsibilities. They had a royal tea with cucumber sandwiches and jam tarts. 1/12 YEAR 4 THIS WEEK We held our Yrs 4-6 assembly outside on Tuesday – it was glorious weather and a gorgeous setting. Additionally – Year 4 are focussing on plastic pollution during DT this half term. This week Group 1 reused plastic milk bottles to create bird feeders and snack pots. They worked really well together – there are going to be some happy birds! 1/8 YEAR 8 ART Year 8 this week have had a moment to work together on a larger piece. The creative collective comes to life. Love it!Beautiful! So cute! 1/2 YEAR 9 ART Just to get back to ourselves after the break some of our Year 9 students lost themselves in pastel creations of the moon. 1/3 SAILING INTO THE LONG WEEKEND Nine sailors from years 5 and 6 took part in the first Sailing Club session of the summer term and we'd love to let you know just how great they were! With a mixture of some who have sailed a little, one who has sailed a lot and the majority who have never sailed at all, our time on the water was a great success. The sailors covered the basics; parts of the boat and what they do, how to control our speed, steer and turn our boat around. A special mention for Alexander who mastered falling out of his boat and to Ava for being so helpful to her friends who were learning the ropes! It was great to see everyone out in their boats and I looked forward to seeing them all progress over the coming weeks. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 13th May, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK CLICK FOR RICK'S MESSAGE A MESSAGE FROM NICK OT Dear Parents, The week started in great style with an insightful and informative Junior School Town Hall event. It was interesting to hear the key thoughts on parents’ minds and to have some good discussions around several central themes and topics. The rest of the week has seen the Junior School charging full steam ahead and tomorrow sees us host a very busy-looking Open Morning for prospective families. Next week sees the Year 5’s head out on their residential adventure to JCA in Tewkesbury and it is very exciting to see residentials back on the agenda and access awesome experiential learning away from the Frensham landscape. The week after sees our Year 6 tribe head to St David's in Wales for a residential with adventure company TYF. Coasteering, surfing, mud runs, conservation and self reflection will be some of the highlights that the children will get to explore. It really is a trip to see the Year 6’s end their time in primary education in style! I sent out a Key Dates communication to you earlier today to ensure you have all the exciting and key moments of the summer term on your radar. Here's the link again here if you need it: https://sway.office.com/blMlMGmGAUvhga86?ref=Link It is going to be a busy rest of the term, yet one where we can really begin to rekindle the chance for us all to get back together and share in the experiences of the children. Have a lovely weekend and see you next week. Take care. Nick O-T and the Junior School Staff NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES FRENSHAM IS A SILVER RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOL! We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded the Silver level Rights Respecting School which means that we are Rights Aware. We are proud of this endorsement as a school that puts the Rights of the Child at it’s heart. As the only school in the area to have achieved this it really does set us apart. The Silver award was gained through submitting evidence, both written and photographic to our UNICEF assessor as well as going through an intensive inspection process. Members of staff were interviewed, followed by a random group of students from across the Junior and Senior School. We received some fabulous feedback however, the strongest was about our students who were so confident and knowledgeable about their rights. She was blown away by their strong student voice. We will be receiving a full report and certificate very soon as well as a big banner – look out for it in Flottage at some point. The next step is to achieve Gold which we plan to achieve by summer 2023! This is a great achievement for Frensham and the whole community feel proud to have received the Silver Rights Respecting Schools Award. SURF TRIP The Year 8 to 13 Surf Trip is taking place from 16 to 18 September. This is for all students currently in Year 7 to 12. Places are limited and it is usually a very popular trip, therefore they will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. To give everyone advance warning, the letter will be sent to parents on Monday 23 May and will contain a link to the form to give permission and make a payment. Please put this date in your diary and know to expect the letter then. PARTY ON BOURNE VILLAGE GREEN FOR UKRAINIAN FAMILIES A small group of Farnham friends are organising a free event for all local Ukrainian refugees and their host families on 3rd July 2022 in the marquee on the Bourne Village Green. This is a great opportunity to get together with fellow nationals, communicate in their own language, meet people in the same situation, share experiences, enjoy some British hospitality and also to say thank you to their hosts who have opened their doors and hearts to visitors from war torn Ukraine. It may be that you have sight of these families and I therefore attach the poster invitation for you to kindly distribute accordingly, perhaps in your PTA newsletters? Entrance will be for those who have replied before 13th June and please address any queries you may have by email to Irenie on ukranianrefugees@gmail.com . INFORMAL FRIENDS OF FRENSHAM VOLUNTEERS GROUP FOF are looking to put on many more events as we begin to enjoy a return to a more normal life. To help with this we are looking to put together a group that we can contact to help out once in a while, either through WhatsApp and/or email. It's nothing permanent and can range from: helping out at an event taking in collections selling 2nd hand uniform meeting up with new parents or just having a catch up and a coffee. You can dip in and out as you like, but it would be a fun way to become more involved in this great Frensham community. If you are interested please email me on Gayle@Fofrensham.com . Tickets go on sale next week THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM THIS WEEK GREENPOWER Goodwood Heat 08/05/2022 On Sunday 8th May our Greenpower team entered the first race of the season at Goodwood Motor Circuit. It was a glorious day; the sun was out, and the team were excited and a bit nervous or their first proper race day. The team arrived at the Goodwood track at 7.30am and helped unpack the car and kit from the van and prepared for scrutineering. The car has to pass strict safety measures before being allowed out to practice and we’re glad to say it passed with flying colours! Phew! This was down to all the hard work since January that the team have been putting in every Thursday after school to get the car race-ready, along with preparing the pit to car communications, writing newsletter articles, analysing previous race data, pit stop practices and of course, driving practice on the Astro. Olivia, our team leader was pivotal in devising a racing strategy for the day and had to make sure the team knew their duties, where to be and at what time, and ensure the team communicated effectively. Linus, George (GVC), Olivia and Archie got the car out in practice which was an important part of the day. Throughout the practice session, the team were able to polish up on last minute pit stops, get used to the live telemetry data system, check the pit to car communications and make sure they were happy with the smooth running of the car. Thankfully, practice was successful, the team were becoming more confident with the task ahead of them, and excitement grew around the paddock area, not long until their first proper race! Race 1. Drivers: George, Leo, Theo. George started us off and had to negotiate a number of scratch build and kit cars from the starting line, our modified soft start speed controller meant that some cars overtook us from the off but we quickly caught up with them and overtook the majority. The modified speed controller is used to conserve battery power, something that is key to last the entire race off two 12V Greenpower batteries. After four laps, George pitted and in jumped Leo. Just like George, he drove brilliantly, overtaking many cars and making his way up the leaderboard. Finally, our last driver of race 1, Theo. Team FHS pitted for the last time, Theo jumped in and was away. This was the smoothest pit stop of the day, the team working like a well-oiled machine, you wouldn’t have guessed this was only their first race! Theo had the longest stint in the car and again, climbed the leaderboard to put us in 3rd place overall out of 54 kit cars, a huge achievement by all involved. Unfortunately, the race was red flagged as there was an accident with 3 minutes to go, and didn’t restart, this meant that the gear ratios and calculations we worked on prior to the race were not as accurate as we would have wanted them to be, but that’s racing. Race 2. Drivers: Callie, Rafi, Negu. During the break, we altered the gearing slightly to increase the speed. This was a bit of a gamble as over gearing a car can lead to taking too much out of the batteries and not finishing the race, we altered the ratios with caution and because of the data Alex had collected from the first race, we were confident of the change. Callie started us off this time, luckily the team managed to get to the front of the grid, with all 87-scratch build and kit cars behind us – superb planning on their part! Callie drove fantastically, getting the car around in the quickest time on her second lap, a personal best for team FHS at Goodwood. She pitted a lap early as the pit lane was quiet, this was a difficult call but the right one, as the next lap the pit lane was chaos! Next in was Rafi, he drove with confidence, a brilliant stint and put us in a really good position with only one more pit stop to go. Next up was Negu, the secret weapon! Negu had the longest spell in the car and did the team proud, team FHS and our brilliant supporters were willing him on lap after lap. Cars around us were slowing down, many cars had to be recovered because of over gearing, poor battery care or mechanical failures. Thankfully, Negu powered around with little sign of slowing down, we were spot on with the gearing changes and this played into our advantage in the final stages of the race. In the last few laps, we went from 5th place kit car to 2nd place kit car and were catching up 1st place quickly. Our last lap took just under 6 minutes to complete, compared to our quickest lap of 5 minutes and 12 seconds. The car in front of us took just over 12 minutes to complete their final lap and their quickest was 5 minutes, that’s what people at Greenpower call ‘falling off a cliff!’ – as far as battery consumption/care is concerned! We were so close to catching them and with another lap we would have. We finished the race in 2nd place in the kit car category, an amazing achievement. To decide the overall results, the furthest distance was taken from either race 1 or race 2, whichever was greatest. In race 1 we completed 36 miles, this was cut short by 3 minutes because the race was red flagged, we would have travelled further under normal circumstances. In race 2 we completed 37.16 miles, only 1.42 miles short of the kit car that finished in first place. Now that the team have raced the Goodwood circuit and have a greater understanding of what is involved, we all agree that tweaking our gearing further could give us an advantage in future races. FHS was still putting in very competitive lap times and the batteries still had some spare capacity at the end of the race. An excellent learning curve for all involved, including us staff! Our overall standing, including scratch build cars was 9th out of 87, not too bad considering scratch build cars can use much lighter materials and adapt the aerodynamics considerably. The twelve students involved in the day were Alex W, George VC, Archie M, Linus R, Theo H, Rafi G, Callie J, George M, Negu O, Olivia S, Edward S and Leo H. They all deserve a huge amount of credit for the way they approached the day, represented the school and came together as a team, we were thoroughly impressed with them! A big thanks to Neil M, Sarah C and Joanne VC for giving up their Sunday to enable us to race! Our next race day is at the Lotus test track in Hethel, Norfolk on 19th June. Giles 1/11 1/10 Comments from the Greenpower team: George VC: ‘I am looking forward to driving in the next race and it was very fun to drive the car and take over other kit cars.’ Linus R: ‘I enjoyed helping with the pit stops. I drove third in the first race and loved the driving. I also liked the atmosphere of the paddock and the pits and the way everyone worked as a team.’ Negu O: ‘I enjoyed driving in the car, it was very fun. I enjoyed doing the pit-stops and helping the next driver get in, I felt like I was contributing to the team.’ Archie M: ‘I found it really fun even though I was injured from a cricket match the day before. I did a practice run in testing and it was awesome and good to drive the Goodwood circuit. The team worked really well together.’ George M: ‘I have really enjoyed Greenpower from the very beginning. The whole team has been really supportive and fun. The races have been great and I’m happy with the end result for the first race of the season.’ Leo H: ‘I enjoyed the teamwork and the celebrations after, I can’t wait to improve on our next race!’ Callie J: ‘My favourite part of the day was racing the car because it was such an exhilarating experience, racing round a 2.4mile track with loads of other cars around me! Coming into the pitstop was hard but fun at the same time. It was so amazing to see the ranking of our car and we all cheered when our drivers went past.’ FOREST SCHOOL AND OUTDOOR ED On Monday, the Year 3 & 4 Soft Archery ECA was a great success and a perfect way to start our week of adventure. All the children were challenged to set up their own individual range, consisting of getting the targets assembled, bow and arrows in order, and placed correctly. Within a couple of minutes all children were firing away and developing their skillset. Year 5 Outdoor Education worked well on the high ropes course completing the gladiator rings, leap of faith and seesaw, whilst Year 6 continued their module in archery, putting their maths knowledge to great use. In Year 3, Luca, Woody and Remy continued their hard work developing a platform, learning how to use a sawhorse, bow saw and hammers. Georgia and Amelia saved a caterpillar and made a luxurious house out of leaves, whilst the remainder continued their plaster of Paris experience or developed a den. Nursery built a den and had a little tea party, accompanied by another caterpillar. We shared tea, ate cake and finished with a story of two about the mini beasts around our site. 1/7 OPEN MORNING Middle and Senior school students were treated to a beautiful flute duet from Joanna D and Tori Edwards at morning talk yesterday. GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO THE RIVER WEY Year 10 Geographers enjoying being knee-deep in the River Wey, conducting fieldwork as part of their GCSE course. 1/4 FAREWELL YEAR 11s We said good luck to our Year 11’s today as they headed off on study leave. It was mocktails and music inside as the weather was not on our side. Students went off with some wise words from their tutors and an exam survival pack. They have been an amazing cohort who have shown great resilience over the past two years. Skippered by Heidi, Frensham lost the toss and were put into bat first. The opening pair of Imogen and Heidi made a productive start scoring lots of quick singles with the odd boundary. Read More U10 Cricket v St Hillary's Monday afternoon was a perfect example why the sports department love the Summer term so much with the sun shining on the field and Astro bursting with activity. Cricket was the order of the day, and we were lucky enough to have four U10 cricket matches happening simultaneously against St Hillary's. This was the first game of the season for the year 5's and it was amazing to have every single pupil in the year involved and giving cricket a go. Despite missing their last Monday cricket session to the bank holiday, they still showed plenty of promise with some great batting, bowling and fielding skills in these pairs cricket fixtures. The games finished in a win, two draws and a loss for the Frensham teams in some well-spirited displays. Well done to all involved. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 6th May, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK Dear Parents I am pleased to let you know that our first Ukrainian student joins us shortly, and I am hopeful of some other students joining us soon. You will appreciate, I am sure, that choosing which students can come to Frensham is a very hard task as we know that all students in such difficult circumstances would benefit from an education here. We are working hard to do our best to match applicants to the school to ensure that they thrive. Last weekend we played host to our second TEDx Frensham event, and it was an absolute triumph. I want to thank the wonderful group of parent volunteers and staff members who made it all happen. We had a wonderful array of speakers who spoke on the theme of ‘Human Together’. Topics ranged from celebrating autism, dyslexia and those who stutter, to combating youth violence and how to cultivate an interest in schoolchildren for design and architecture. One of the most memorable was a talk delivered by Old Frenshamian Steven Frank, a Holocaust survivor. Steven has spoken to our students before, and his story of surviving the horrors of war perpetrated by an egotistical and ruthless dictator could not have been more relevant with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. I am sorry that more members of our community were not there to hear Steven and our other amazing speakers as I know that all who attended were deeply moved. On Saturday 14th of May, we hold our next Open Morning at school. If you know of families who may be interested in attending, please do tell them to register as soon as possible as space is limited. With a highly successful inspection report achieved, interest in the school is high and we would love to welcome as many families as we can next Saturday. Have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes Rick A MESSAGE FROM NICK OT Dear Parents, The Junior School is now in full flow, the sun is shining and it’s been an exciting week for all. There have been many highlights in the Junior School learning spaces this week that are just too good to not share. Year 5 has been showing their understanding of pollination and plant life-cycles through some excellent art and comic strip work and Year 2 has been researching the rainforest layers and making chameleons. Nursery and Reception children have been visiting new countries in a real inflatable canoe and all I need to say for Year 1 is ‘Tadpoles’!! Year 6 has been exploring the Ancient Greeks and are in the process of writing incredible character descriptions of Hades (God of the Underworld) and Year 3 has been on the seed germination trail and is potentially expecting some interesting results! To cap it all off Year 4 has had an inspirational week considering plastic pollution and creating River Raps. The theme of plastic pollution also transcended into the Year 4-6 assembly on Tuesday where visiting speaker Danielle challenged the children to think about our use of plastic as human beans. She shared alternative ways that could be used when planning a party (e.g amazing paper pom-poms instead of balloons, steel straws instead of plastic and all-natural bath bombs instead of plastic party bag favours.) The children were particularly taken by a sandwich bag made from mushrooms! Certainly food for thought and inspiration for this generation to engage with. Hopefully one of many impactful future talks across the whole Junior School. This Monday we have the next Junior Town Hall event. You should have received an email invite to this event earlier in the week (with an attached form to fill in please). Rick and I are keen to build on the success of the last event as the feedback, ideas and questions gleaned from it have proven to be highly supportive across this last term. I wanted to finish off my communication this week with the exciting news of two new appointments in the Junior School. These appointments see Meghan Guy take up the role of JS Assistant Head of Pastoral and Wellbeing and Jade Lefevre take up the role of JS Assistant Head of Teaching and Learning. These roles will be pivotal in the JSLT (Junior School Leadership Team) and I am very excited by the skills, dynamic thinking and energy that both Meghan and Jade will bring to the team. They will both be at the Town Hall event for you to meet and chat with on Monday, as well as Honesty (Head of EY) and Kelly (Head of JS Learning Support). I hope you have all had a lovely week and that you have a great weekend in store. Take care and have fun, Nick O-T NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP Yr.9 – 13 Pinhole Photography workshop – come along a make a pinhole camera from a beer can! This year we have had some amazing success. All cloned from a single cauliflower head/floret with about 30 new plantlets growing! The students used aseptic techniques and then propagation to ensure no contamination and left them over the Easter to grow. They had over 95% success rate. 1/2 YEAR 8 LINOCUTS Finally we are at the fun stage of printing from the lino cuts. Such a wonderful set of outcomes. Some on rust dyed fabric squares. Lovely work. A WEEK OF FOREST SCHOOL AND OUTDOOR EDUCATION Reflecting back on last week, Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed the warmth of the fire pit on offer, sipping hot chocolate and roasting marshmallows, as part of their overnight stay in preparation for their residential trip. On the Friday, they took on Jacob’s ladder and the ‘pizza challenge’ using our recently purchased soft archery equipment. On Friday afternoon, Year 1 ventured away from their own forest school site and ended up playing a big game of ‘eagles eye’ by the Mushrooms, later using their hawk eyes to spot any new developments as we are now well into spring. Year 3 kick-started their week back with some amazing art prints using Plaster of Paris, whilst a handful of children learnt how to tie a ‘clove hitch’ and a ‘square lash’ to make a base for a treehouse platform. Amazing work Year 3! Year 4 got close and personal and were challenged to find the ‘coolest thing’ in the forest, using our powerful microscopes, analysing every detail on their top 5 items, before sharing it with their peers. Finally, Years 5&6 unexpectedly had to apply a large amount of maths during their outdoor education lesson, taking on more epic soft archery challenges; the Points Challenge and Level Up! 1/10 TEDxFRENSHAM The community TEDx event on Saturday was a wonderful day for everyone who came - speakers, attendees and volunteer team alike. The Aldridge was buzzing with inspiring talks and discussion. Here's a quote from Old Frenshamian Steven Frank who was one of the speakers: "I kept thinking of Trevor Aldridge and this wonderful theatre legacy in his memory. If only he knew what was in store when we were there at school together all those years ago... It was one of the most memorable and inspiring days in my life, giving hope to mankind during these troubled and somewhat lawless times. A real tonic." 1/18 THIS WEEK IN HAMILTON HOUSE The summer term is always the best one for boarders ….. such beautiful grounds to live within and lots of time spent exploring them. And this week, birthday time too … Please contact Lynn Goodburne with any boarding requests this term. 1/6 YR 7 & 8 VENTURED OUT & VOLUNTEERED So off we went to Gostrey Brightwells to share a singing session this week with a guest, Munro (the golden retriever) Everyone enjoyed meeting him and he behaved well as we shared our voices together. Grand Old Duke of York, Sound of Music, What do we do with a Drunken Sailor, a solo from Amber, rounded off with Sweet Caroline. It was a delightful afternoon and the children were wonderful at listening and sharing time with our elderly friends. 1/2 SUMMER TERM BREAKTIME Breaktimes in the warmer seasons give everyone a chance to have a little down time outside. SPORTS REPORT THIS WEEK'S SPORTS REPORT National Rowing Success Last weekend the Pendred family all attended the Junior Sculling Regatta at Dorney Lake. - 2022 March Week 5
THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 1st April, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK Dear Parents The sudden change in weather this week, after the glorious sunshine recently, has not dampened the spirits at school and we have ended the term on a high. I want to pay tribute again to my wonderful staff who have laboured on this term in challenging conditions with so many staff absences due to COVID. They have covered for each other, and they have worked hard to ensure that your children’s education has had as little disruption as possible. They certainly deserve a good break now! ISI Inspection report I hope by now you have all had a chance to read our fantastic Inspection report. As I have said before, I'm delighted that ISI have endorsed my new vision, mission, aims and values for the school, but I want to reassure parents that we continue to work hard to improve all we do. I already have an action plan in place to address the recommendations that ISI have made and will share next steps with parents on this in due course. Recent events This term has finally felt a lot more like the Frensham of old, with numerous events for the community to attend. The Aldridge Theatre has been buzzing again, playing host to the fantastic senior play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, to the dazzling dance show, the joyous ‘A Night at the West End’ and the wonderful Rock and Pop gig last night, amongst other events. Together with regular lunchtime concerts, a teatime concert for the Junior School and a brilliant Taiko Drumming Festival with some local schools, our performing arts have been back with a bang. I hope you have all enjoyed the opportunity to see the children doing so well. Read More A MESSAGE FROM KATHERINE Dearest Frensham family, Frensham is a very special place and one I am very sad to be leaving. I never thought that taking over the Head of Junior School would be quite so eventful! I had just a term to get to know everyone’s names and then have a Christmas holiday before I was sitting in Becks's office at 8pm with Laura, Becks and Rick watching Boris’ announcement that he was shutting the schools. We sat there open mouthed! I never imagined in my wildest dreams that we would not be allowed to leave our houses and I still can’t quite believe it happened. Then it really has been a rollercoaster of two years to ride the wave of government shut downs, guidance updates and risk assessments as well as to try and implement positive change in the Junior School. There really has been very little sleep for SLT and many of our holidays ruined with updates at the last minute. This really has been a storm we have weathered as a team and I could not have done it without the support and friendship of Laura and Becks. We said right from the beginning that we were still a Frensham family and that has prevailed. Read More NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES COMMUNICATIONS SURVEY We would really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to help us streamline our communications. Please click here to fill out a quick survey. Thank you! STUDENT COUNSELLING SERVICE Many of you will remember our previous counsellor Sas. We're really pleased to announce that he will be back working at Frensham again after the Easter break. This means we will have a counsellor onsite 5 days a week. Discover ways to free your creative soul on large scale paintings. Each participant will create 2 large pieces. Supported by the South Street Trust fund, Sonia will facilitate a safe place to discover ways to let go; to flow with the materials and tap into imagination. To take part please tell me why you want to discover more about intuitive painting and how this will support your own creative work. This information will be used to help select students. Send an email or Teams chat message directly to Sonia Percival by 29th April. A THANK YOU FROM FRIENDS OF FRENSHAM Many thanks for all your support in donating to and shopping at, our 2nd Hand Sale this week, especially to Maki, Terry and Val for helping out on the day. Due to your amazing support, we raised approximately £450. As you are aware Covid has curtailed many of our fun activities and fundraising events, but every penny raised goes towards our goals of supporting Frensham and the local community as well as allowing us to put on events. Thank you! A THANK YOU FROM FARNHAM FOODBANK Many thanks also for your kind donations to the Farnham Foodbank (and to the Volunteers who helped coordinate the collections). Harriet at the Farnham Foodbank sent us the following message: “On behalf of the Foodbank I would like to thank Friends of Frensham Heights PTA for their wonderful donation of food items last week which amounted to 103.55kg. We were able to restock our shelves with the abundance of food which will go towards helping us meet the needs of many of the area’s poorest families during a very difficult time.” FRENSHAM HEIGHTS SCHOOL TRIPS TO BE CARBON NEUTRAL The school are aware of the impact on the environment of our activities. Student voice in the form of Eco Heights and many dedicated staff are working on a strategic environmental plan. This is being developed to cover all aspects of the school’s carbon footprint. There are many aspects to this. From April all school trips will include a small charge in most cases around 1-2% of the cost of the trip that will offset the travel of the trip. In 2021 the Year 7 Hadrian’s Wall trip and the 2022 Iceland trip were both offset. Rather than using a third party the school will be doing the offset itself in the form of tree planting on the school estate. The fund will also be placed in an ethical bank account. SHYNEFEST Run by Frensham parents, Shynefest is a family-friendly music festival happening on 3/4 June in Guildford. Click here for more info. BOOK TICKETS THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM THIS WEEK YR 7-9 ART & DESIGN EXHIBITION Like many galleries and museums we were thrilled to be able to celebrate the Art, Design and Ceramics work of our talented and imaginative Year 7 and 9 students after such a long covid induced absence. The Aldridge Theatre as ever did not disappoint as a stunning space to showcase the endeavours of our young artists and designers. Frensham students have all been busy working to develop highly personal, thoughtful well crafted pieces, in a broad variety of materials (machine sewing, cardboard construction, ceramic slip trailed, glazed and hand built pieces, painting, drawing and collaborative large scale works). Our young creative makers have really stretched their learning and developed their confidence and self belief. What a lovely evening to finally meet again and share experiences. 1/27 SCIENCE FAIR Thank you to everyone who entered the Science Fair: Year 7: Fergal – Does Sugar Affect Academic Performance? They were very professional in rehearsals and backstage, and an absolute pleasure to work with. Well done to the performers, and a big thank you to the backstage team. 1/28 GREENPOWER This week our talented engineers worked on the brakes and brake light microswitch to work when the brake lever is pulled. Once the steering assembly was finalised too, we made sure the wheel tracking was aligned correctly so the car runs as smoothly as possible! The last pieces of bodywork were fitted and secured, along with the padding and safety foam, and the car really started to look complete! We pumped the tires to the correct pressures (100PSI) and worked on some Frensham Heights Promotional banners for when we race. We are excited for next term as our first race is coming up soon!! Written by Callie 7SVC 1/3 AHOEC GOLD STANDARD Achieving the AHOEC Gold Standard in Outdoor Education is a huge achievement and we have done it again! This award reflects our complete commitment to the values of the AHOEC (Association of Heads of Outdoor Education Centres) and to Outdoor Learning. We are really proud to be the only school in the UK to hold this award. The Gold Standard process is a serious undertaking and requires a deep look into every process and procedure within the Outdoor Education department. It is unique in that it is built upon detailed self-evaluation, and exposes every piece of our work to evaluation and inspection. A huge thank you to Linn K for her lead on this amazing accomplishment. JUNIOR SCHOOL EASTER EGGS What an egg-cellent Eggs-hibition! Thank you for supporting this event and crafting the wonderful eggs-hibits that were sent in. We had a cracking assembly in N-3 where children were able to egg-splain their creation. Since then, children from across the school have been in to admire these eggy wonders! Enjoy the photos! 1/28 YEAR 7 CERAMICS ECA Inspired by The Great Pottery Throwdown, Year 7 have been making clocks in their Ceramics ECA 1/4 ECOHEIGHTS BIRD BOX This week saw the completion of this year's Bird Box Project by the Eco-Heights ECA, as the last remaining bird boxes were put up at different sites around the school. One of the longest-running projects undertaken by the ECA group, the bird boxes were an entirely student-led initiative, utilizing the support of Year 6, the DT department and Gordon (Estate Bursar) to bring it to fruition. One of those involved was Sebastian of 8SJS, who had this to say about the project: “We ran the bird box project as part of Eco-Heights because we wanted to give the younger years the opportunity to explore different ways that they can help preserve and improve the environment around them. The number of wild birds in this country is in decline and that is predominantly down to habitat destruction and we want to make sure that birds continue to nest and thrive in our school grounds. After all, who doesn’t like watching a bird fly past their window?” GOLD DofE A huge congratulations to our Gold DofE students who successfully completed their Gold DofE Practice Expedition last weekend in the Brecon Beacons. Their training day took an unexpected turn when we had to make the decision to divert the team from their intended route due to brush fires in the locality which gave them a great opportunity to look at hazard avoidance and how we go about putting plans in place to divert and evacuate when needed. Their remaining days saw them cover a distance of 35 km with a summit of Pen Y Fan on their final day and I’m pleased to say that after a few navigational errors early on in the expedition both teams managed to do a fantastic job in terms of decision making, route finding, pacing and looking after each other. Well done everyone! TRIP TO BROOKLANDS MUSEUM On Thursday Years 1-3 had a fabulous trip to Brooklands Museum. The weather was cold but the childrens’ interests were soon kindled with all the wonderful vehicles. The highlight was a visit to Concorde where despite the weather we all enjoyed pretending to be an aeroplane flying through the sky. A fabulous time was had by all! 1/5 YEAR 4 RESIDENTIAL Year 4 went on their first residential trip this week to Henley Fort. They had an AMAZING time learning about time in WW2. The children ate and cooked wartime food, they completed Homeguard and ARP Training which included putting out fires, experiencing blackouts and air raids, practising marching and handling weapons. The children slept in Yurts and had to make their own beds. The trip was brilliant and the children were impeccably behaved, they were assets to Frensham! 1/11 OLD FRENSHAMIAN REUNION On Saturday, we welcomed around 30 Old Frenshamians who left in either 2011 or 2012. The afternoon kicked off with an impressive afternoon tea in the Long Gallery, after which they were taken down to Roberts House. They then went off wandering the grounds - down to the arts block, the sports hall and Hamilton House. After a satisfying hour of wandering, they returned for a drinks reception in the Long Gallery which spilled out on to the Front Lawn. The evening continued at a local pub and we have been assured that the festivities continued throughout the evening. In defence, Dulcie, Erina and Loic were solid and made several crucial tackles. Read More Under 11s Community Football & Netball Tournament Our sixth form sports leaders have spent the last few weeks planning to run a Football and Netball Tournament for our local primary schools. The tournaments were a great success and ran very smoothly. After several weeks spent organising the Netball tournament, it was great to be able to host Potters gate, Rowledge, South Farnham, and Bordon primary school who played against each other as well as two Frensham teams. It was fantastic to watch so many great skills and excellent teamwork on the courts, especially as it was the first time playing 7 a side for many of the teams having only played high fives previously. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 25th March, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK CLICK HERE FOR RICK'S MESSAGE NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES FRENSHAM HEIGHTS SCHOOL TRIPS TO BE CARBON NEUTRAL The school are aware of the impact on the environment of our activities. UKRAINIAN REFUGEES MEETING As a school we are looking carefully as to how we can best support this situation as well as educate ourselves and come together as one community in the coming weeks. To that end, Lynn G is closely communicating with efforts in our locality and we are now aware of some of our parents who are connected with the same group. TUESDAY 29th MARCH - BALLROOM 7.30pm meeting for any families that are interested in hosting Ukrainian family members. 8.15pm meeting for anyone looking to be a support to the Ukrainian families, offering transport, activities, meals, etc Please do contact Lynngoodburne@frensham.org and she is happy to phone you personally and discuss any of the complexities we are discussing community wide about how we can be supportive right now. LAST CHANCE FOR CAR PARK SURVEY All parents should have received an email inviting them to give their feedback on the car park and drop-off procedures. Please take a couple of minutes to fill in the survey here . PARENT VOICE REPS NEEDED Parent Voice are seeking two new reps to join their volunteer team to cover Year 6 and Year 8 starting in the Summer Term. Becoming a rep is a positive way to get involved at Frensham. Parent Voice is made up of volunteers whose role is to provide a point of contact for feedback, to represent wider parent views fairly and without bias, provide support on general issues and develop opportunities to collaborate with parents and staff to support the joint interests of the school community. Find out more here. For more information and to put yourself forward, please contact: Chair Vicki Nixon vicki@nixonconsultancy.com , Vice Chair Emma Tweed emmatweedradford@icloud.com or Secretary Isobel Hanmer thehanmers@gmail.com MALAWI INFORMATION MEETING – FINAL CALL FOR TEAM MEMBERS FROM YEAR 10 AND ABOVE! Anyone who has signed up for the trip, or who is thinking about joining us, is very welcome to come along – parents and students! Linn and I would like to finalise the team so that we can start putting some dates in the diary for pre – trip preparation. I have had quite a few people contact me about the trip so it would be lovely to hear what you have decided to do. IMPORTANT – after talking to Becks and Linn, we would welcome anyone who will be in Year 10, September 2022, to think about coming on the trip. You are very welcome to join us on Tuesday. Looking forward to seeing as many of you who can come as possible! Sally SECOND HAND PE KIT SALE Friends of Frensham will be selling second hand PE kit outside the Aldridge on Tuesday 29th March. CAREERS OPPORTUNITY FOR YEAR 12 Do you have an idea for an Etsy type shop? Do you think you can sell more than your peers? Do you have a flair for persuasion? If you’re answering yes, come and speak to Lyall. On Founders’ Day in July, we have two stalls for Year 12 students to show off their entrepreneurial flair. This can be a solo-project or a team effort. Essentially, if you have an idea for a product or service that you could sell through a market stall then come forward. I want to add an element of competition – can you outperform the other team at the other market stall? Imagine you’re auditioning for The Apprentice; here’s your chance to shine. All ideas are welcome, speak to Lyall to help facilitate your vision. Click here for more information CALLING ALL GAMERS! Right now, we’re looking into the possibility of running an ECA involving gaming. Next year we’re launching the eSports qualification which will see a club set up with Tim and directly supporting those students. But what about everyone else? The chance to play games, socially interact, compare types of gameplay, and build in a little bit of maths to devise tournament play and handicap systems to enable everyone to have a fair chance, is a great way of enhancing students’ development and learning. We hope to be able to trial this ECA in the summer term but need a games console to play the games! If you can donate or let us borrow an Xbox of PS5 (with any games and controllers) that would be greatly appreciated and well-received. If we can get hold of one, the club should run! If you can help, let Lyall know . JUNIOR SCHOOL EGG DECORATING EGG-STRAVAGANZA As we near the end of term we would like to invite all families to join in our Egg-stravagant, egg decorating eggs-hibition.. The aim is to create/decorate an egg or eggs in a theme or setting of your choice. All creations need to be no bigger than a shoe box (in order to fit on classroom windowsills and be carried by your child!) If you are an egg-free family please use craft or plastic eggs (seen recently at Squires Garden Centre). Whole family involvement is encouraged! Please see this article from The Guardian for ideas https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/gallery/2013/mar/28/easter-egg-competition-winners-in-pictures No prizes but plenty of glory for creativity and puns! All entries to be submitted to class teachers by Tuesday, 29th March at morning drop off. All creations will be returned to entrants on last day of term, Friday, 1st April. All entries will be photographed, and a gallery will be published in the whole school newsletter. We look forward to seeing your creations and using this to raise community spirits. TOY SALE Last Friday we held another toy sale, this time in the Nursery to 3 courtyard. Thanks to Paula and Tim Page, all the items were displayed to tempt our younger buyers! As it was fine weather, we also took a chance to sell ice lollies as well. The total amount raised was about £120 so we have, overall, raised about £260 from both sales. This money will be making its way to our friends in Malawi where it will go a very long way to provide supplies. A huge thank you to everyone who donated, sold or bought! They discussed why the work of archaeologists were so important, the tools that were used by them and why everything is documented along the journey. They were then presented with a variety of tools to support them in excavating their shell fossil. We have been learning about evolution in class and why fossils are so important in understanding the journey that life on Earth has been through, we have also studied Mary Anning and created beautiful double page spreads all about her life. 1/16 GREENPOWER This week was exciting as we worked on lots of finishing touches to the car. We fitted the bodywork and refitted the rear axle and front end. We also permanently attached the steering wheel and communications button to it so the driver can communicate with the rest of the team at races. We hope to get the car out on the Astro before the end of term so everyone can have a feel for the car before we get it out in our first race after easter. I worked on writing the newsletter article and took some photos of the team hard at work. I am sure I can speak for all the team when I say that I am buzzing with excitement for the car to be finished. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 18th March, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK Dear Parents Film fans of a certain age will remember ‘Groundhog Day’, in which Bill Murray is doomed to repeat the same day again and again, with hilarious results. Unfortunately, our version of Groundhog Day is far less funny, as Covid rears its head again and we are doomed to repeat some of the challenges we faced earlier in the pandemic. We have a number of students absent, but as you saw from my email this week, it is the staff absences that are causing significant operational problems. It is very likely that some of our normal activities will have to be curtailed, but we are doing our best to minimize disruption. Thank you for your support and understanding with this. On a brighter note, it was wonderful to see a full theatre this week for the Dance Concert on Wednesday. The evening was a sheer delight, from the joy of seeing Year 2 in their very first dance concert to seeing some of our hugely talented GCSE and A Level dancers. Our performing arts provision continues next week with ‘A Night at the West End’, a student-led performance at 7pm on Tuesday 22nd March. Tickets are free and are available here: https://www.frensham.org/events. Tickets can also be booked for the Creative Arts Exhibition and Science Fair on 28th March and the Rock and Pop Gig on the 31st March, so there is plenty going on to keep you entertained right up until the end of the term. Have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes Rick A MESSAGE FROM KATHERINE Dear Parents, So, this seems to be our week for charity! We had a collection for the Farnham Food bank this week, Red Nose Day and the second Toy sale in aid of Malawi. Thank you to all the parents for your support with these events. With so much turmoil in the world it is important that particularly for children they feel like they can make a difference and something is within their control. It was lovely to see so many of our kids and staff in red today and making each other laugh. With rather a low number of staff across the board this week, the staff definitely needed a good lift in their spirits including myself! We have worked as a team as always and kept the plates spinning! Thank you to all of them, the Junior School staff are amazing. I thought I would share with you the amazing Michael Rosen performing his poem ‘Chocolate cake’ because this always makes me laugh and reminds me of my brother who is both cheeky and adores chocolate! A big well done to Lynn’s Performing Arts ECA group and one of Dan’s Year 6 Dance classes for their performances in the Theatre this week. They really were fab, and it brought a smile to everyone’s faces. Well done. I do hope that you all have a good weekend and just a fortnight until the Easter hols! Best wishes, Katherine A MESSAGE FROM HONESTY AND KATHERINE Dear Parents, Please may we request that if you and your children are in the Theatre coffee shop after 3.30pm that the learning of other students is respected. Unfortunately, when younger children are able to run about the theatre unsupervised at this time they disturb the learning of older students whose school day is still in progress. We are also concerned about safety of children in this space. We would kindly ask that parents support this request and help to nurture our 'Spirit of Togetherness' as we respect all students' learning. Thank you! Honesty and Katherine NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES PARENTS' VOICE Minutes from the last Parent's Voice meeting are available on the Parent Portal. You can also find them here. They were challenged to create an egg cress-head and to think about what seeds need to germinate and the care of plants as they grow. We can happily share our egg heads are all growing a fine head of cress hair! 1/6 Year 7s also questioned their consumer choices in an enquiry based lesson called ‘Conscious consumers’. The task was to evaluate their food choices and to create a meal plan which had a greater variety of plant based products. They produced some fantastic ideas and suggested some simple, achievable changes! Well done Years 7s! 1/3 Our Year 8s also got hands-on this week! Their activity was a design challenge, ‘Engineering and ecosystem’. Their teamwork discussing best design was translated into a mini terrarium in which they will grow a succulent plant. We’re hoping to see some newly grown succulents in a few weeks time! 1/5 While the challenge was called ‘Making microscopic machines’- achieving the goal of this challenge was anything but small! The Year 9s showed resilience and determination taking on content that was completely new to them and working together to solve the ribbon of amino acids to make a protein! Great effort Year 9s! 1/2 The Year 6s got to enjoy some live chemistry experiments to celebrate Science week! From igniting gas bubbles to the whoosh bottle and screaming jelly baby, the oooohs and ahhhhs and excited chatter were really the best bits! 1/7 Our lunch time activities for Science week have also captivated our students! The pig dissection created a lot of buzz before and after the event. We were able to sign up to a few online talks too which covered a variety of topics from physics and maths to STEM careers. In the beautiful sunshine we had some students measure and chalk out the length or height of some of the largest organisms on the planet! They used a measuring wheel and making some comparisons realised just how small we are! 1/3 DANCE CONCERT And the award goes to… All the brilliant and wonderful performers who danced, sang and performed their hearts out at this week’s Performing Arts Concert. It was a full house and there was magic in the air. Thank you to all the performers and those who gave up their free time to help. It was your talent, fierceness and enthusiasm which made it an evening to be proud of. 1/15 HISTORY TRIP TO CANTERBURY Year 10 and 11 Historians in lieu of a trip to France and Belgium Battlefields trip, the students were taken to First and Second World War sites in Kent. Sites included the very moving military cemetery at Shorncliffe, the Battle of Britain museum and the Hawthorn Trench. This trench is a replica of one in France and was used in various films during lockdown and been visited by lots of other schools. This gave the students a real sense of trench life. At the same farm, they had been lambing. The students had the bonus opportunity to cuddle the lambs. The students behaved brilliantly particularly at the YHA. On the Saturday, the team explored the tunnels at Dover Castle which have a rich History from Napoleonic times through to the nuclear age, then the Spitfire museum and the tunnels under Ramsgate where the town sheltered during the war. Overall it was great for the students to get out on a rich and varied experience. 1/7 GERMAN PLAY: HOROSKOP Students of German enjoyed a play by the Onatti theatre company in the Aldridge theatre on Wednesday. The play was all about whether we should believe our horoscopes or not, and was great fun and very interactive! Students understood most of the language and it was great to hear them interacting in German with the actors! This play was performed by two native German actors. The spoken German was delivered slowly and clearly. We wanted our students to be able to follow the story, sustain their enjoyment and above all boost their confidence. The plot highlighted many similarities to our student’s lives, but in a humorous and exaggerated manner, making them relatable and increasing their enjoyment by empathising with the characters and storylines. 1/6 SPANISH PLAY: EN EL CAMPAMENTO This week Frensham Heights welcomed the Onatti Theatre group to the Aldridge Theatre. On Thursday, our year 8-13 students were treated to a highly engaging and entertaining play conducted entirely in Spanish. This play was performed by two native Spanish actors. The spoken Spanish was delivered slowly and clearly. We wanted our students to be able to follow the story, sustain their enjoyment and above all boost their confidence. The plot highlighted many similarities to our students ‘lives, but in a humorous and exaggerated manner, making them relatable and increasing their enjoyment by empathising with the characters and storylines. The play was accompanied with worksheets. They contained a synopsis of the play, some extracts from the written script and some useful words and phrases. 1/9 A-LEVEL PHOTOGRAPHY Years 12 & 13 photography students have been very creative in the Studio this week. 1/6 YEAR 9 ART Looking at the positive in our world. Year9 have designed and made post cards this week. 1/1 JUNIOR SCHOOL CERAMICS ECA Our Junior School ceramicists have been busy creating some wonderful Easter egg cups and dishes 1/8 GREENPOWER UPDATE This week we finished off the chain guard that protects the driver from the chain breaking and the spinning axel sprocket and motor sprocket. This was prototyped in card, then lasercut in card and then finally laser cut using fluted polypropylene, this is both good for protection and lightweight. The engineers worked on setting up the steering wheel with the throttle mechanism, hand grips, horn and press button for pit to car communications. Getting the steering set up was very fiddly and quite time-consuming but we managed it! We will need to make sure the tracking is aligned, maybe next week, to ensure the wheels are parallel to each other and give the best rolling resistance possible. Alex researched the transponder and telemetry company that will be supplying live times during race days. He looked at the previous season data and got familiar with navigating the website, ready for when we race on Sunday 8th May at Goodwood. Next week we hope to remove the rear axle and front end now we know it works and fit the bodywork. Written by Callie 7SVC 1/3 FARNHAM HELP FOR REFUGEES Tutor group 7SVC we were inspired after the morning talk covered the Holocaust and the issues refugees continue to face today. Trish from Farnham Help for Refugees came to talk to us during tutor time to help us organise donation collections for the charity. We ended up with around 200 bags filled with clothes and toiletries to send and it took us over 4 hours to sort through it all and load the van! Linn, Sarah, Barnaby, Polly and Theo went to the church on Friday after school to help unload the van and sort donations at the church. The charity were inundated with donations and ran out of boxes so more work is needed. As our first fundraising effort to support the ongoing work of this charity, Farnham Help for Refugees are asking for a donation of £6 per box to help continue their efforts. 7SVC will continue to support the efforts by continuing to sort donations as an when boxes arrive. Click here to sponsor a box if you would like to help to support the amazing work of this charity. Thank you to our whole SVC team with all the help and to the other year 7’s who came to help sort through donations. Go year 7! Well done everyone!!! Callie 7SVC 1/4 SMALL ISLAND AT THE NATIONAL THEATRE We were fortunate enough to be able to secure a small number of tickets to the press preview event of Small Island earlier this month. Limited by availability, we were only able to take a small group, where we approached, in the first instance, those who were on the scholars list for academics or drama (in Year 11 and sixth form), and then those boarders who were felt have contributed to the wider life of school and would benefit and enjoy this amazing opportunity. A fabulous evening in an amazing theatre - an adaptation of a great book. Challenging in some places as we were reminded of some parts of our history, that today do not sit comfortably with most of us. However the play also had some amazing humour and showed a lovely side to characters and their genuine compassion and care. 1/9 SPORTS REPORT THIS WEEK'S SPORTS REPORT National Rowing Competition It was great week for the Pendred family with all three siblings in action at a National rowing competition (The Junior Sculling Head) at Dorney Lake yesterday. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 11th March, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK Click here to hear Rick's message A MESSAGE FROM KATHERINE Dear parents, On Tuesday it was International Women’s Day and I wanted to share with you an inspirational woman in my life. In a school like Frensham, we want every individual to work hard and feel like the world is their oyster. My sister-in-law Katie very much embodies the ability to give back to her community and work hard to achieve her goals. She wanted to be seen for her amazing skills not the gender she was assigned. She is a real problem solver and team player and these attributes have supported her to achieve her goal of becoming a Firefighter. Below is her story: "I joined the Fire and Rescue Service in 2016 as a Retained Duty Firefighter. I initially applied as I wanted a new challenge, and perhaps more importantly I wanted to give back to the local community that had supported me through my self employment. At the time of application, it didn’t really concern me that I’d be the only woman working on the Fire Station. Life is too short to follow the status quo, and the emphasis in the Fire Service is entirely on your capability as opposed to gender identity. Any reservations that I did have about being the only woman were needless as I instantly felt a part of the gang and quickly realised that I wanted to pursue firefighting as a full-time career. Now five years later, I am a full-time Crew Manager and fortunate to be able to work alongside some incredibly supportive colleagues. My favourite part of the role is probably that no two days are ever the same as we respond to such a wide variety of incidents. It is extremely rewarding to go home after a shift knowing that you’ve been able to have a positive impact in what is often a distressing situation. I firmly believe that the attributes brought into my profession are unique to the individual as opposed to gender, and everyone really does have something to offer. It’s a privilege to be able to promote the Fire and Rescue Service as a career path, and the skillsets and development opportunities available really are limitless. My advice to anybody considering a career in the Fire and Rescue Service would be to absolutely go for it. If it scares you, excites you and makes you grow, then the likelihood is it is going to be a worthwhile adventure! " Have a lovely weekend everyone and remember to follow your dreams! It was an action packed tour from the outset and the girls had a wonderful time. It was so great to be able to offer this kind of experience for the girls who have worked so hard on their netball since being back on the court. On Friday, after a long coach journey, the girls were straight on court. This session was led by Thunder Academy coaches and they focused on the girls attacking play. We then finally got to our rather lovely hotel and after dinner, it was an evening of bowling. The girls were just as competitive here! It was great to see them all having a good time together after being unable to be away with their friends for so long. Saturday was busy from start to finish. It began with a session with the Manchester Thunder players, Shadine Van de Merwe and Ella McCormick who had just come back from a game again Bath. The girls then went straight into a fixture against a local club team. They were one team down so the U15/U16 squad and the U14 teams were first on court, followed by another match for the U13's (against the U14 team) and a mix up for the U15/U16 team playing amongst the club players. Both matches were competitive and made the girls work for every goal. We then went straight to the Trafford Shopping Centre for some retail therapy before a late meal and return to the hotel. Sunday was another training session with the U15 Thunder Academy coach working on their movement and defensive play, before venturing home. Excellent coaching, a wonderful experience and happy memories made! We are looking to run another UK netball tour, weekend commencing 30 September. More details coming soon. 1/30 YEAR 6 MUSEUM Last week, the Ballroom was transformed by our Year 6 children into a beautifully curated Prehistoric Animals Exhibition. The children's handmade 3D sculptures were part of their current 'evolution' topic and sat alongside a handwritten 'museum notice' containing lots of interesting facts. 1/12 REGENCY ART Students in years 7-9 Art and Ceramics lessons last Thursday for Regency Day focused on creating collaborative portraits of significant figures from the Regency period, our focus for World Book Day. Those who had made significant contributions to the world, be it in art, literature, law, leadership and medicine were represented and celebrated. Writing cards, letters and invitations as well as books was a key way to record events and communicate within upper Regency classes, so we took inspiration from this. Students used ‘flourishes’ and calligraphic writing recording quotes, texts, facts and figures, to build and draw out features in these portraits, using dip pen and ink that would have been used at the time. We think they look striking from a distance then reveal more subtlety and information about the individual the closer you get to them. 1/1 TAIKO PERFORMANCE The Aldridge Theatre came alive this week with the energetic beat of Taiko drumming. Wednesday evening's performance was partly a culmination of workshops for students and staff from Frensham Heights and Bordon Junior School. Our Year 2 and 4 and some of our Senior School students took part in the workshops. They were joined at the performance by Taiko Meantime groups from Potter’s Gate and Weydon schools. 1/10 TUESDAY TAIKO FUN FOR THE COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE FACULTY Under the incredibly talented, watchful, and patient eye of Mark Alcock, the faculty got together for a workshop designed to explore the communication skills needed for impactful drumming and to learn more about the cultural heritage of Japanese taiko playing and performance. As absolute beginners, what we may have lacked in raw talent and basic coordination, we certainly made up for in our enthusiasm, collaboration, and a good dash of laughter too! It was a fantastic way to share our faculty spirit.. 1/6 YEAR 4 DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY In Year 4 group 2 made gas masks in DT. They learnt what the gas masks were used for and then built their own masks, closely following instructions. 1/4 YEAR 10&11 HORIZONS On Monday Years 10 and 11 had some powerful talks about substance misuse and harm reduction. Both year groups heard from Zoe Shuttleworth from It Happens Education, who spoke to them separately on this issue. Year 10 engaged really well with Zoe’s talk, asking insightful questions and demonstrating good listening skills. Zoe spoke to them about some of the dangers of alcohol as well as illegal substances and the student feedback was positive. Year 11 heard first from Fiona Spargo-Mabbs whose personal story was powerful and moving. They then heard from Zoe whose expertise was evident in the valuable insights and information she was able to share with them about the dangers of substance misuse and also how their choices and behaviour can reduce the potential for putting themselves in harms way. We really encourage you to take this opportunity to ask your children in these year groups about the talks as way in to having these important conversations with them about this issue. 1/2 YEAR 8 ART - RUST DYE ON FABRIC Natural dyes have been with us for ever. Year 8 try their hand using rusted objects. Many found the process too smelly (vinegar, tea, soya milk). GREENPOWER UPDATE This week we continued to work on the communications, and they are coming along well! To test them we went from one end of the school to the other side to test range and quality, this will be especially important for tracks like Goodwood and Castle Coombe that are larger. Leo took over from what George started last week and further developed the chain guard and took all the measurements for it, so it fits around the axel flywheel and the motor sprocket. This is a very fiddly job and one that needs to be very accurate, so the rear cover fits on snugly. Our engineers worked on getting the front stub axels attached and the font wheels attached too! We almost have a rolling chassis! Team clothing was discussed and Hoodies and Polo T-Shirt colours agreed. During the races we will have a telemetry box fitted to the car, provided by Greenpower that tracks our live progress. Alex researched the company that provides us with this information and got familiar with the races that Frensham Heights competed in last year. (TSL Timing) Next week we hope to get the steering set up, continue with the communications and hopefully finish the chain guard prototype, ready to manufacture in the selected material. Written by Callie Jones 7SVC 1/5 INFORMAL ACOUSTIC CONCERT We had another wonderful acoustic concert this week leading up to our Rock and Pop Gig in a couple of weeks time. Well done to all the talented musicians and singers. 1/8 YEAR 10 GERMAN COOKING This This week in Year 10 German we made Currywurst, a traditional German street food. Their verdict: tastes nice but quite flavoursome! It used a WHOLE bottle of ketchup! 1/5 SPORTS REPORT THIS WEEK'S SPORTS REPORT U11 Hockey Festival On Wednesday afternoon the U11 hockey team had a brilliant afternoon taking part in a festival of hockey. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 4th March, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK Dear Parents What does ‘normal’ Frensham look and feel like? After two years of disruption to our normal routines, I ask this question because to me, this last week is starting to feel like normal Frensham, the school we all know and love. The reason for this is that we are now having more and more of the events we used to have, and it feels fantastic! The Music Department has been busy recently. Lunchtime concerts for Junior and Senior School students in recent weeks, with full audiences including parents, have been fantastic events. This Wednesday saw the return of our teatime concert for Years 4, 5 and 6. It was great to see so many parents in the ballroom and the children did a wonderful job of demonstrating one of our core school values, which is courage to try. They all showed real bravery in performing, some for the very first time. On Thursday, we welcomed two speakers to the Aldridge Theatre for our first in-person Morning Talk for senior school students in two years. It really was a moving moment to see students and staff back in the theatre for this event and were treated to an enlightening and stimulating talk on the Regency period by Dr Kim Simpson and her colleague Clio O’Sullivan. They both work for the wonderful Chawton House in Hampshire, and they spoke with real passion about the Regency period, Jane Austen and other women writers, and they also included a demonstration of how to bow and how to curtsey! This weekend a senior school netball tour to Manchester sets off, another sign of things returning to normal. We were devastated to have to cancel the tour to Jersey, and we wish the students all the best for this replacement trip. Finally, with the horror unfolding in Ukraine, I wanted to pay tribute to some of our students who rallied together to organise a protest today in the front quad in support of those suffering in this conflict. It was a moving moment, and a great example of another of our values, the spirit of togetherness. Have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes Rick A MESSAGE FROM KATHERINE Dear parents, For a difficult time for so many in the world this week, it has been important in a school like Frensham to support our children to talk about their worries. I am sure that many of the adults in the community have had some sleepless nights over the crisis that the whole world is watching unfold. Our wonderful children have had time this week with their teachers to discuss their concerns and we always encourage them to share their worries and to lighten their load. You will see in below that there has been a student lead protest which the Year 6 were given the opportunity to join. At Frensham we want children to have a voice and even our younger learners want to have theirs heard. Lynn and the charity team will also be looking for donations which will hopefully make it to the families who have been displaced during the crisis. We want to make sure our children feel they can make a difference. On a more positive note, we had a very successful Teatime concert on Wednesday for Y4-6 and although I was unable to attend it is so great to get back to hosting events onsite for families. Well done to all the performers. Lastly it was World Book day yesterday and the children and staff brought alive characters for the day. Books are such an incredible escapism for both children and grown ups. We all have stories that stay with us. My favourite children’s book was The Silver Sword by Ian Serrailler. It is a story about the plight of a group of children during war time to find their parents and survive. All those years ago, the hope that runs through the book was something that really spoke to my brother and I and that story is sadly particularly relevant now. I truly hope that the children in the current crisis still have some hope in what must be a very dark time. It puts everything into perspective and makes me realise how incredibly lucky and privileged I am. Take care of each other, Katherine NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES DONATIONS FOR FARNHAM HELP FOR REFUGEES Next week, our 7SVC tutor group will be collecting and sorting donations for Farnham Help for Refugees – Please bring in any donations you can spare. After counting the process from the successful toy sale last Friday and adding in some left-over money from ice cream sales last year, we were able to pay an incredible £185 into the charity account. This money will be used to support Malawi Schools Trust and Happy Space – both charities close to Frensham’s heart. Students and parents who are interested in the trip, or who have already signed up for the trip next year, are invited to join us for drinks and canapes at 7pm. It will be a chance to come and hear about the trip from the Frensham point of view. I am also hoping that some of the students who came on the last trip will be able to share their experiences during the evening. The trip is open to those students who will be in Year 11 and above in September this year. Please have a think about joining the team – it is a trip that stands out for everyone who goes on it. In addition, it is good for a personal statement when the time comes. Any issues, please email me – sallyheighington@frensham.org Sally HAVE YOU GOT THE “X-FACTOR” TO ENTER THE “DRAGON’S DEN”? Here at Frensham, we’re all about giving our students the opportunities to challenge themselves and gain valuable experience. And in our values, we’re also keen to be a valuable part of our wider community. So why not give them something just a little bit better than the normal? In the summer term we’re planning to host an event providing our Year 9s with a look at the world of work. The Year 9s will be form small teams and be asked to pitch a product or service that either has environment or the benefit of society at its heart. What’s happening A competition that’s loosely based around Dragon’s Den, with hints of X-Factor. In our school, teams will create their idea, put together a presentation – maybe even create a prototype – and pitch it to a panel of judges. They can work on it at break, lunch, after school, at home, and with some dedicated time in tutor sessions. We’re inviting other local schools to take part; with each school putting forward their winners to compete on a grand final hosted in our Aldridge Theatre. But how’s this different? This is where you come in. We’d like to offer a mentor/sounding board to each group and have expert judges on hand for the finals. When students come up with their idea, we’d love you to offer feedback, guidance, and advice on their plans. The commitment from you can be minimal, the impact and excitement you’ll be helping to support will be immense and tangible. And the grand final? If you’re able to give up some time (I’m sure we’ll get you a tea and coffee!) to watch the pitches and help judge a winner – then get in touch. You may even be able to put this against your company’s CSR policy. In short? If you’re interested in helping, or simply want to find out more before you can put your name down, then please email Lyall, our Head of Careers . You don’t specifically have to be a parent of a participant – we’d happily receive interest from all parents able to offer their time. BOOK TICKETS TEDxFRENSHAM 30th April An inspiring local community event bringing together a diverse array of speakers to share ideas and stories. Tickets are on sale now! BOOK TICKETS THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM THIS WEEK Regency Day Thursday saw our Senior School Regency Cross Faculty day in celebration of the 25th anniversary of World Book Day. Students were treated to a wonder of Regency revels to celebrate World Book Day in the Senior School in a cross- faculty celebration. The day was kicked off with a superbly informative, humorous and educational guide to life in England. From manners to morning call etiquette, students were treated to some rather surprising conduct codes, they practiced their curtseys and bows and left fully equipped to triumph at their next Regency social event. Dr Kim Simpson and Clio O’Sullivan, resident experts at Chawton House in the heart of Jane Austen territory, delivered their morning talk with a passion and we can’t wait to liaise with them more on their education programme for the region. In drama, students replaced their phones for a different type of communication: coded fan flirting! They became experts using just movements to indicate some of the following: Touching right cheek – yes Touching left cheek – no Twirling in left hand – we are watched Twirling in right hand – I love another Fanning slowly – I am married Fanning quickly – I am engaged Open and shut – you are cruel Open wide – wait for me Presented shut – do you love me? With handle to lip – Kiss me In right hand in front of face – Follow me Drawing across the cheek – I love you Placing on left ear – I wish to get rid of you PE offered up a chance to try out croquet on the front lawn whilst Geography explored the climate phenomena when Britain experienced a ‘little ice age’ that saw the Thames freeze over at least 23 times, with the last one occurring in the Regency period (1814.) Frost fairs were part of the culture and students got to dig deeper into the weather patterns and research this cross between a Christmas market, trade fair, circus and boisterous party! Over in Science, they focused their attention on two Regency heavy weights: Michael Faraday and Edward Jenner, the founder of vaccinations. Music snuck in an exploration of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 which though technically was composed three years before the Prince Regent took over, was certainly a fine testament to the extraordinary creativity of the time. Dance turned the ballroom into its original function testing out some fancy footwork of formal dance whilst Art created some beautiful Regency styled group portraits. English, of course, were in seventh heaven, needing little excuse to don their best bonnets and bows! The walled garden became the backdrop looking at Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett’s most tense exchanges in Pride and Prejudice. It also became the platform to look at the art of the Regency picnic based on the infamous Box Hill scene in Emma. They also explored the intricacies of Austen’s use of free indirect speech and acerbic narrative voice. Austen’s contemporary, Mary Shelley’s masterpiece Frankenstein, was also examined under the Regency microscope. Support for Learning looked at the art of letter writing and calligraphy. Lunch was a festoon of Regency fare boasting a choice that included: Wellington’s white soup, Mrs Bennett’s Beef and potato fricassee, Longbourne lentil cottage pie, Pemberley Potatoes, Rev Collins Cauliflower, Beau Brummell’s beef ragu, Josephine’s Jackets with beans and cheese and finishing off with Lady Hamilton’s trifles with whipped syllabub and Miss Dashwood’s marmalade sponge. Faculties working together certainly provided a World Book Day that made its mark in Frensham’s history! 1/31 Peaceful Protest We are incredibly proud of our students who came together to really embrace Frensham’s values of Spirit of Togetherness & Courage to Try by standing with the citizens of Ukraine, as well as those in Russia & around the world who are protesting against the situation which is unfolding in Ukraine. Students from Year 6 to 13 made signs with protest slogans expressing their desire for peace, and sang protest songs including Give Peace a Chance by John Lennon & Yoko Ono, and Where is the Love? by Black Eyed Peas. A huge thank you to Sofia, Carla, Barnaby, Matilda, Olivia, Nell, Polly & Negu for all of their hard work & leadership in organising the protest – you’ve really embodied Frensham’s aim of providing a supportive community of positive changemakers. Thank you also to everyone who came along to show their support, despite the cold! If you would like to support the humanitarian appeal, please go to Disaster Emergency Committee 1/5 WORLD BOOK DAY Our Junior School enjoyed a World Book Day themed day yesterday with costume parade, reading time throughout the school and quizzes. 1/15 MATHS FEAST This morning, for the first time in two years, we welcomed three of our local senior schools to the Aldridge theatre for the AMSP Maths Feast. Each school brought two teams of their finest Year 10 students to battle it out against eight of our Year 10 mathematicians. The Feast comprised of four rounds of Maths challenges which tested all aspects of their Maths knowledge, including some demanding number facts, a sprinkling of Pythagoras’ Theorem and even a little Emma Raducanu knowledge thrown in for fun! Our students worked tirelessly and had a great morning. A massive thank you to the students for taking part; you did Frensham proud! 1/3 POLITICS TRIP TO PARLIAMENT Y ear 12 politics students went up to the Houses of Parliament and the Supreme Court this week. The students loved it and it was great to see the seats of power with all of their idiosyncrasies. PANCAKE DAY Years One to Three had lots of fun on Shrove Tuesday morning racing and flipping in the courtyard. Concentration and fun with some very vocal support! 1/5 TOY SALE After raising over £100 with the toy sale last week, we are going to hold another one on Friday 18th March after school in the N to 3 hall. We have many books, toys and games suitable for this age range and we hope that you can support our two school charities, Malawi Schools Trust and Happy Space. 1/7 YEARS 4 TO 6 TEATIME CONCERT We have been fortunate enough to have experienced two wonderful Musical Performances during the last ten days. The first being the Lunchtime Informal Acoustic Concert, held in our wonderful Music School Recital Room – some incredible performances by our incredible students. It was also very exciting to welcome so many of you to our second event: The Junior School Teatime Concert – again fantastic performances from each and every one of those involved, we feel very proud, and no doubt you do too! We really can’t convey our thanks enough for everyone’s support for what we hope will be the first of many events to come! Just a few photographs of the Teatime Concert here: 1/20 GREENPOWER UPDATE This week Archie and Olivia worked hard collecting everyone's preferences for hoodies and coming to the colour agreed by most people. Linus worked really well on the wheel covers for advanced aerodynamics, meanwhile Edward, Alex, George VC and Theo started on attaching the front-end steering assembly that they plan to finish next week. George M and Leo started to prototype a bespoke chain guard from card to protect the driver that we eventually manufacture from a more substantial material. Finally, Rafi and Negu continued with helmet communications and testing, there’s quite a lot to do to get the helmets and communications working before the race days, they will train the team up on how to use the communications once we’re ready and at that stage. Here is a Quote from Theo, our lead engineer: “I love Greenpower, it is so much fun to see our hard work paying off!” Written by Callie Jones 7SVC MAIN HOUSE PANCAKES Linn K treated the Main House boarders to a pancake making session for Shrove Tuesday. YEAR 4 SCIENCE Year 4 enjoyed their first practical lesson about circuits this week in Science. They were given loose wires, a battery pack, a light bulb, a buzzer and a motor and their challenge was to create a circuit to make each of their items work. The children were delighted with the results! They then worked through challenge cards showing pictures of different circuits, the children had to predict if the circuit in the picture would work, they then tested their prediction using the equipment they had. 1/7 YEAR 9 ART Year 9 have been working together on some amazing collaborative pieces. 1/4 TWO WEEKS OF JUNIOR SCHOOL FOREST SCHOOL AND OUTDOOR EDUCATION Last week Nursery kicked off with an amazing game of grandma’s footsteps on the front lawn and then talked about different types of weather at Frensham Heights and how this makes them feel. This week Nursery were able to spot deer tracks in mud, within our Forest School Site. We followed them all the way from one side the to other and then lost them. Year 2 set out to raise awareness for the range of animals in forest school. They did this in several ways; either creating a poster, creating a drama piece, or writing a song. We discussed what their animals eats, where they sleep, and how we can better support them in their habitat. This week Year 3 made mini worlds based upon an ancient story about of Frensham heights. It was amazing to watch them apply their imagination and creativity through using different materials and ideas. Over the last 2 weeks, Year 4 have supported our ecosystem by completing a litter pick. In total we filled 2 big bags of litter from around our site, gathering a range of rubbish from all over our site, whilst collecting 18 disposable face masks. Excellent work! This week Year 5&6 completed their first lesson of high ropes; The Crate Stack. This was thoroughly enjoyable and was nice to see all the children getting involved and supporting one another. 1/16 SPORTS REPORT THIS WEEK'S SPORTS REPORT U15 Hockey Vs Duke of Kent Another great performance by the U15 squad against a strong Duke of Kent side with a final score of 4-3 seeing victory for the home team. Great play by all: super saves by Millie in goal; robust defence by Becca, Jolyon and Sophia at the back; skilful play Felix, Eliza and Toby in midfield; and strong attacks from Luke, Jake and Eva up- front. U14/15 Mixed Hockey vs Duke of Kent Frensham 3 Duke of Kent 2 On Tuesday, we welcomed Duke of Kent to Frensham once again. This game was an 8 a side match and both teams played with great spirit. For the first half of the game Duke of Kent looked to be in control. Their quick accurate passing seemed too fast for our Frensham midfielders and defenders as Duke of Kent took an early 1-0 lead, but credit to Frensham for hanging in there in what was a tightly contested first half against a stronger Duke of Kent side than last time. The students made the most of these opportunities to engage in some self-care and really enjoyed having a Morning Talk devoted to their wellbeing. Some took part in yoga, some decorated biscuits, some went for a walk outside and some enjoyed mindful colouring or just reading a book. All of these activities help us to be a bit more mindful and take a break from all the demands of every day life. Taking time for ourselves and finding out what enables us to relax is really important we hope they continued with some of these activities over the half term. Everyone tried on the helmets and race suits so our team leader Olivia could record the correct sizes, we needed to order a few smaller sizes. Some of us worked on designing custom hoodies and t-shirts for our team clothing and the others looked at electrics to see what needed to be done, they then attached new cables and connectors to batteries and assembled gearing more accurately as there was an issue with the original alignment. The engineering team started to put the front steering end together and will continue with this next week as Its quite a fiddly time-consuming job! They also looked at how climate change will unfairly affect those in developing countries, such as the many farmers whose crops we rely on, while the cause of this is predominantly from developed countries. After learning about this, students were encouraged to make placards and join a Climate Change Demonstration outside Neville Hall and march through the campus calling for change and promoting environmental causes. Students enjoyed this introduction to activism and it we hope that it may one day help the students to stand up for what they believe in and embody the Frensham value of ‘Courage to Try’ as they become global citizens of tomorrow. 1/5 Year 10 Kartoffelpuffer Year 10 German students made Kartoffelpuffer today! They followed the recipe in German and learnt some new cooking skills along the way. They also had to request every new ingredient from the recipe in German to practise some speaking skills too! They looked and tasted delicious! The camaraderie and team spirit shined through, despite facing a tough Duke of Kent side. Superb defensive pressure from both sides, meant that DOK had to fight through the circle to get any shots off. Some great passages of attacking play meant that Frensham had plenty of shots at goal. A fantastic afternoon of sport! U15 Girls Hockey vs Duke of Kent In a 6 a-side game against a strong Duke of Kent team, it proved to be a game of two halves for the U15 girls on Tuesday. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Thursday 16th December, 2021 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT A MESSAGE FROM RICK Dear Parents The view from my office of the Surrey Hills has provided much needed relief as we have limped to the end of term. After the high in the last two weeks of being able to host the wonderful ‘Peter Pan’ and the spectacular dance and music concert in the Aldridge Theatre, to having to postpone and cancel all events this week, it has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride. I want to thank all those parents who have been supportive of the difficult decisions we have had to make, juggling our desire to run as many events as possible with the pressing need to protect the health and safety of the whole community. Plans for January Looking ahead to next term, we are planning for the worst, but hoping for the best! There is talk of a January lockdown, but what shape this may take is unknown. In the Senior School, we have asked all students to ensure that they take as many of their books, files and notes home as possible in case we have to revert to online learning. Staff are planning for this, in both the Senior and Junior Schools, but we are hopeful that this does not happen. I want to reassure you that we will do all we can to ensure that no learning is disrupted, building on the successes of our last period of online teaching and learning. Calendar Hopefully, you will have seen by now that we have published on our website the term dates up until the end of Summer 2023. As we are on the border of Surrey and Hampshire, we always need to look carefully at their published dates before we publish ours, balancing this with the HMC school dates too. We ask that parents stick to these dates when booking holidays and avoid as far as possible removing children from school. I want to mention, and I apologise for the short notice of this, that there will be an extra day's holiday at the end of February half term next term. We have a staff training day on Monday 21 February, so lessons resume on Tuesday 22 February. We have already written to boarding parents to say that if you are unable to change flights then boarders are welcome to return as usual on Sunday 20th February, and they will be supervised in the boarding houses on the 21st. Fee Invoices An important message from the Bursar and the Finance team. You will shortly be receiving your Spring term fee invoices by email and we want to remind you that we will never change our bank account details without plenty of prior notification. If you are ever unsure of the school’s bank account details or would just like to confirm them before you make a payment, please don’t hesitate to call the Finance Department on 01252 792299 or email us. We would also like to let you know that paying your child’s school fees by direct debit remains one of the safest ways to pay. If you do not have a direct debit set up and would like to arrange this for the Summer term fees, please get in touch via FeesAdmin@frensham.org If you do pay by direct debit, total fees (per your invoice) will be taken from your chosen bank account on the first day of every term. School Values You will be aware that we launched the new school values this term. We have been working hard behind the scenes on a number of ways of instilling these values across the school. On a practical level, we have used them in the Junior School to help with the creation of a new behaviour charter to help children understand their rights and responsibilities both in and out of the classroom. In the Senior School, we draw attention to them in weekly notices, departments have been looking at ways of incorporating them into their curriculum planning, and we have made them a part of any staff recruitment processes we have conducted this term, with specific focus on asking values-based questions of candidates. We sincerely hope that parents embrace our values too and on the whole, interactions with parents are nearly always positive and in the spirit of togetherness and mutual respect that is at the heart of Frensham. On rare occasions, these interactions aren’t as positive and I wanted to reassure you that we always aim to do the very best for the children in our care. Of course, we get things wrong sometimes, but by approaching issues with generosity of spirit the school, and the community around it will be enhanced and enriched. I want to end by thanking you again for your support. We are pleased that for the majority of the term we have been able to run things as close to normal as possible, and we have really enjoyed the opportunity to interact with parents on a number of occasions. We are planning further opportunities next term, COVID-dependent, and we look forward to seeing you all again soon. Have a wonderful (COVID-free) Christmas and New Year with loved ones. Best wishes Rick RICK A MESSAGE FROM KATHERINE Dear Parents, I want to thank you for your support in what has personally and professionally been a tough term, we got there! I am so very sad that we are not finishing the term with all the children onsite. I want to wish all of our Year 5 and other children who are not in school well and we hope we can be back together in the New Year. Today we say goodbye to Louise Dixon who has been working in our Early Years at Frensham for almost 6 years. She is a kind, thoughtful and much-loved member of staff who we will miss terribly as she moves back in Nursing in the new year. Thank you for everything Louise and we will welcome you back to say a full goodbye with a full cohort of children and staff in January. I am looking forward to spending next term as a hand over with Nick as he will be taking over as Head of the Junior School at Easter when I move on. This time will support a smooth transition in what is an ever-changing national picture. Lastly, I wholeheartedly hope that each every one of our community gets to spend their Christmas with the ones they love because it really has been a challenging few years. Take care one and all! Take care, Katherine NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES Year 7 to 13 Lateral Flow Home Testing Kits and New Covid Guidelines Unfortunately, the lateral flow home testing kits have not arrived before the end of term. They will, however, be here for the start of next term and we will be able to hand out kits to students on their return. Students will also be tested on site before they return to lessons, unless exempt. More details to follow from Becks. You can get LFD kits from: https://www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests Please Look Carefully at the Covid Flowcharts Below Communication Regarding January Start Times We will communicate with you on 6th January regarding any staggered start times for our January return. Please keep an eye on your email. Year 10/11 GCSE History trip 11-12 March 2022 Sadly, the increasing Covid regulations have meant two significant changes to the History GCSE trip this year. Firstly the dates have changed from 17-19 March to 11-12 March 2022 . Secondly it has become a UK-based trip rather than to France and Belgium. Have a look at what he's been up this week. Enjoy! The videos will be available to watch until the new year. CLICK FOR THE ADVENT CALENDAR MUSIC & DANCE CONCERT We are so proud of all the students who performed in last week’s Performing Arts Concert. A welcome celebration and what better way to bring our theatre back to life. They were all stars, shining through a dismal and uncertain time to bring us some holiday cheer and make us all smile. Thanks to all involved, for your hard work, perseverance, and fabulousness!! N to 3: LIGHTS, CAMEL, ACTION - THE SEQUIN! On Monday Nursery – Year 3 performed their Christmas production to the children in Years 4, 5 and 6. The children had put so much effort into practising and learning their lines, the songs and all the moves – they were fantastic! They thoroughly enjoyed getting dressed up in their costumes and showing the results of their hard work. All the regular nativity characters were on stage in a Strictly style performance. There was certainly some razzle and dazzle as each group performed a song or a dance for the judges - the Smallest Sheep, the Funky Camel and Caesar and Augustus. A final ceilidh involved all the children celebrating the Christmas story together. YEARS 4 TO 6 CHRISTMAS SHOWCASE Although we were unable to have parents in the audience for our Years 4 to 6 Christmas Showcase, the children put on a great show for each other and their friends in Years N to 3. Year 4 put on a wonderful ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree!' and explained ‘How to Trap a Christmas Dragon’ with their funny poem recital! Year 5 enjoyed a ‘Hollie Jolly’ Christmas dance and recited some amusing letters to Santa! Folowed up with a wonderful musical rendition of ‘Frosty the Snowman’ - has a very shiny Ukulele! Year 6 delighted with a magical performance of 'Winter Wonderland' and performed their Winter Poems – written, choreographed, and performed by the children! Our junior ECA singers brought the show to close with their delightful rendition of ‘Turn down the lights’! MOSAICS ECA Here are the remarkable results from our Year 7 ECA. We've had a great time smashing tiles, making clay treasure and carefully aligning the mosaic pieces. Great work! Amy and Sonia TRIP TO HAMPTON COURT Years 1 to 3 went on a trip to Hampton Court last week! EARLY YEARS CERAMICS Early years went to the ceramics department and made Christmas tree decorations last week! YEAR 7 GERMAN Year 7 German students have been writing to Father Christmas (der Weihnachtsmann) in their lessons this week. Let's hope he writes back! JUNIOR SCHOOL FOOD BANK COLLECTION Thank you to the whole Junior School who have been bringing in food items for our local food bank. Members of Year 6 helped to pack and deliver the bags and boxes to Rowledge Church, our nearest food bank drop-off point. Reverend Russ was very pleased to receive them all and thanked the children for their help and generosity. CERAMICS ECAs Some wonderful final pieces from Ceramics ECAs including candle holders, animal coil pots and mugs. JUNIOR SCHOOL CHRISTMAS Today the Junior School all had a chance to meet Father Christmas in the outdoor classroom area. He answered lots of important questions - like how he gets into houses without chimneys - apparently by squeezing through cat and dog flaps. The teachers were asked to confirm that the children had been good this term, which they obviously all have. Father Christmas then quizzed them on the names of his reindeer and in return the Year 6 children tested his knowledge of languages (as he’d need them to travel around the world). He managed French, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese and Russian, but struggled with Malay and Icelandic! They were sent back to their classrooms to finish off their Christmas lists with small presents that could fit in his sleigh. The children then had homemade Christmas biscuits and Father Christmas headed off through the woods to finish getting ready for the big day. SHAKESPEARE BOXES Year 8 have been creative in English producing their Shakespeare memory boxes. They were all outstanding. Becks, Alison and Noel had a tough job judging them! The over all winner for the Year 8 Shakespeare project was Luca (from Kate’s class). Runners up were: Olivia (the winner from Sam’s class). Scarlett (the winner from Amelia’s class). James (the winner from Zoe’s class). Well done everyone! FARNHAM HELP FOR REFUGEES Trish, from Farnham Help for Refugees, has just collected all of your numerous kind donations of food, stationary, clothing and even a bicycle to be taken to a local group of refugees. Your thoughtfulness and quick action on this will make others have a brighter Christmas. THIS WEEK'S SPORTS REPORT SPORTS REPORT Inter House Sport Week Over the past week we have completed several house events in Football, Netball, Dodgeball and Fitness. We take part in house events and points are awarded and contribute to the house cup at the end of the school year. Inter House Football Last Thursday, the year 7 and year 8 pupils took part in the annual end of season house football competition. The house competitions require a great deal of teamwork, leadership, organisation, and commitment from the pupils, and it is always great to see pupils demonstrate this when they come together in their houses. In the year 7 tournament, Douglas started strongly and continued this form to remain unbeaten in all their fixtures. Ensor and King battled it out for the runners up spot and it was taken by Ensor on goal difference. In the year 8 tournament, It was incredibly tight between Douglas, Ensor and King, all finishing the group stages on 6 points. Douglas and King progressed to the final on goal difference and Douglas took the top spot once again. Ensor took a well-deserved 3rd spot following a play-off to Nevill. Well done to Douglas on the two wins and well done to all houses on a great afternoon of football. Year 8 1st - Douglas 2nd - King 3rd - Ensor 4th - Nevill Year 7 1st - Douglas 2nd - Ensor 3rd - King 4th – Nevill House Fitness Challenge The inter house fitness challenge consisted of a circuit of the Astro as a house team taking part in various activities. This included Agility poles, speed ladders, burpees, hurdles, tricep dips before around a 1km run around the campus. Every time of every student was taken and an average team time was created. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 14th January, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT MENUS NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK Dear Parents Happy New Year to all of you. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday with your families and that you managed to avoid Covid wherever possible! We appreciate your support for the additional measures we've had to put in place to manage the COVID pandemic, particularly the new measures that the government has asked us to implement. We believe but these measures will be reviewed by the government in about 2 weeks' time, so look out for further information from Becks in due course. We are delighted, of course, that so many of our normal activities are able to happen with sports, music, dance and drama and all other ECAs all happening as usual. Last night saw the first of our senior school postponed dinner dances for Years 7 and 8 and I was delighted to see so many of them having so much fun together at the start of this term. Events for other senior school year groups continue next week. School surveys You will have seen a letter from me this morning containing some links to two surveys. Between now and half term this term, we are going to be sending out short surveys each week to get your views on various areas of the school. This week it is boarding and school transport, and we would appreciate as many responses as possible to help us improve our provision. Inspection It is worth me mentioning that we are anticipating being inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) this term. The focus is on educational quality, and the inspectors will be in school for four days, looking closely at everything we do. Part of this will be asking parents to fill in a questionnaire, with a fairly quick turnaround, on your child’s experience at the school, and on your experience as a parent. We will let you know as soon as this is requested, and you will receive a letter from me with a link to the ISI survey. We are rightly proud of the many things we do well at the school, and of the distinctive nature of Frensham, which we hope to demonstrate when the inspectors are here. Of course, the greatest adverts for the school are our wonderful students, who we know will be open, honest and engaging advocates for a school of which I know they are justifiably proud. Have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes Rick RICK KATHERINE A MESSAGE FROM KATHERINE CLICK FOR KATHERINE'S MESSAGE NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES Midsummer Night's Dream We are looking ahead to our production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream later this term and are in need of some set dressing. Do you have any artificial trees in pots, or any artificial plants, ivy, flowers etc that could be used to help create our forest? We’d also welcome real trees in pots if you were happy to donate rather than lend to us! If you have these or any other items you think might be useful and could bring into school in the next couple of weeks, we would be very grateful. Please could you contact me directly: amandaliddle@frensham.org Many thanks, Amanda Singing Distinction Jasmine in Year 10 received a distinction in her Grade 5 Singing Exam. Well done Jasmine! Fee Invoice A quick reminder that fees are due on or before the first day of term. If you’ve yet to settle this term’s bill, please could you make a bank transfer as soon as possible. We want to remind you that we will never change our bank account details without plenty of prior notification. If you are ever unsure of the school’s bank account details or would just like to confirm them before you make a payment, please don’t hesitate to call the Finance Department on 01252 792299 or email us at FeesAdmin@frensham.org . We would also like to let you know that paying your child’s school fees by direct debit remains one of the safest and easiest ways to pay as total fees (per your invoice) will be taken from your chosen bank account on the first day of every term. If you do not have a direct debit set up and would like to arrange this for the Summer term fees, please do get in touch. Malawi 2023 Calling On Thursday 27th January we are holding a Malawi 2023 meeting in the Ballroom and hopefully on-line for those students who have already signed up for the trip and any who are still undecided. Remember, you need to be in Year 11 or above in September 2022 to take part. I am going to be talking about the trip itself from a Frensham point of view. Hopefully there will be a couple of students who will also speak of their trip there in 2019. Please do join us at 7pm for a glass of wine and more detailed information. Sally Music and Dance Concert We'll be sharing the recording of the Music and Dance Concert in next week's newsletter. So keep an eye out! EVENTS THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM THIS WEEK MAIN HOUSE BOARDERS Main House made guacamole in Main House using Belize 's very own avocados from her home in Tanzania. YEAR 7 & 8 DINNER DANCE What a great evening we had! Everyone made an effort to dress smartly which was lovely to see. The food was enjoyed and plates were left empty. The students chose the playlist so the music seemed to go down well. We have never before had children ask for a disco to be turned down as it was too loud, but for many we believe this was the first disco they had been to! FOREST SCHOOL AND JUNIOR OUTDOOR ED This week, the Juniors have had an amazing time in Forest School and Outdoor Education. Nursery experimented with what different sounds objects or natural materials make, leading into making music and thinking about how we can play instruments softly or hard, slowly or fast, changing our patterns or trying to play in time with others. Both Reception, Year 2 and Year 3 looked at connecting with Nature, selecting a natural item from the forest and using all of our senses to examine it. We wrote descriptive words down and used them to make short stories, rhymes, or poems. Year 4 completed a sound map. This involved sitting in a hidden spot in the forest and listening to all the different sounds they could hear, picking them apart and representing them on paper. Finally, for their Outdoor Education lesson Year 5 and 6 did amazingly well and explored how to pitch a tent. We discussed some factors to consider such as site, weather conditions, proximity to other tents, how far to cook from the tents. CLIMBING AT SURREY SPORTS PARK It was great to see Climbing resume at Surrey Sports Park this week where we had a focus on body movement, balance and an introduction to dynoing. Each and every week our climbers are showing good progression by continually adding new tools to their toolbox enabling them to climb in a more fluid and controlled manner.
