Please send your poems typed and double-spaced. Have fun and good luck! You can find out more about the Farnham Literary Festival here: https://farnhamliteraryfestival.co.uk/ HAVE YOU GOT THE “X-FACTOR” TO ENTER THE “DRAGON’S DEN”? Here at Frensham, we’re all about giving our students the opportunities to challenge themselves and gain valuable experience. And in our values, we’re also keen to be a valuable part of our wider community. So why not give them something just a little bit better than the normal? In the summer term we’re planning to host an event providing our Year 9s with a look at the world of work. The Year 9s will be form small teams and be asked to pitch a product or service that either has environment or the benefit of society at its heart. What’s happening A competition that’s loosely based around Dragon’s Den, with hints of X-Factor. In our school, teams will create their idea, put together a presentation – maybe even create a prototype – and pitch it to a panel of judges. They can work on it at break, lunch, after school, at home, and with some dedicated time in tutor sessions. We’re inviting other local schools to take part; with each school putting forward their winners to compete on a grand final hosted in our Aldridge Theatre. But how’s this different? This is where you come in. We’d like to offer a mentor/sounding board to each group and have expert judges on hand for the finals. When students come up with their idea, we’d love you to offer feedback, guidance, and advice on their plans. The commitment from you can be minimal, the impact and excitement you’ll be helping to support will be immense and tangible. And the grand final? If you’re able to give up some time (I’m sure we’ll get you a tea and coffee!) to watch the pitches and help judge a winner – then get in touch. You may even be able to put this against your company’s CSR policy. In short? If you’re interested in helping, or simply want to find out more before you can put your name down, then please email Lyall, our Head of Careers . You don’t specifically have to be a parent of a participant – we’d happily receive interest from all parents able to offer their time. YEAR 6 FLEXI-BOARDING IN HAMILTON HOUSE Year 6 parents will have received an email from Sian today announcing that we are now offering flexi-boarding to Year 6 children. The students made the most of these opportunities to engage in some self-care and really enjoyed having a Morning Talk devoted to their wellbeing. Some took part in yoga, some decorated biscuits, some went for a walk outside and some enjoyed mindful colouring or just reading a book. All of these activities help us to be a bit more mindful and take a break from all the demands of every day life. Taking time for ourselves and finding out what enables us to relax is really important we hope they continued with some of these activities over the half term. Everyone tried on the helmets and race suits so our team leader Olivia could record the correct sizes, we needed to order a few smaller sizes. Some of us worked on designing custom hoodies and t-shirts for our team clothing and the others looked at electrics to see what needed to be done, they then attached new cables and connectors to batteries and assembled gearing more accurately as there was an issue with the original alignment. The engineering team started to put the front steering end together and will continue with this next week as Its quite a fiddly time-consuming job! They also looked at how climate change will unfairly affect those in developing countries, such as the many farmers whose crops we rely on, while the cause of this is predominantly from developed countries. After learning about this, students were encouraged to make placards and join a Climate Change Demonstration outside Neville Hall and march through the campus calling for change and promoting environmental causes. Students enjoyed this introduction to activism and it we hope that it may one day help the students to stand up for what they believe in and embody the Frensham value of ‘Courage to Try’ as they become global citizens of tomorrow. 1/5 Year 10 Kartoffelpuffer Year 10 German students made Kartoffelpuffer today! They followed the recipe in German and learnt some new cooking skills along the way. They also had to request every new ingredient from the recipe in German to practise some speaking skills too! They looked and tasted delicious! As part of the German food experience they also tried some traditional Bayerische Brezeln which went down a treat. 1/9 Ceramic Clocks In our ceramics ECA, senior school students have been creating clocks. They're in the initial stages with glazing and firing still to come. 1/6 Yrs N to 3 Express Themselves On the Friday before half term, our youngest students expressed their happiest selves with lots of rainbows, glitter, wings, unicorn horns and princess dresses. 1/5 SPORTS REPORT THIS WEEK'S SPORTS REPORT Under 16s Netball The U16's played another match this week in a bid to get some more great GCSE footage. The first quarter ended 6-6 was some competitive play by all. Some girls had to play out of position to match the strength of the opposition. Read More U18 Basketball v Morehouse We had another close match against Morehouse with the lead changing hands many times. We are starting to pass the ball better and controlling the play on offense. Both Martin and AJ controlled the tempo of the game well when dribbling especially near the end of the game. Read More U11/10 v Duke of Kent Brilliant afternoon of fixtures with over 20 U11/10’s out on the hockey pitch. The camaraderie and team spirit shined through, despite facing a tough Duke of Kent side. Superb defensive pressure from both sides, meant that DOK had to fight through the circle to get any shots off. Some great passages of attacking play meant that Frensham had plenty of shots at goal. A fantastic afternoon of sport! U15 Girls Hockey vs Duke of Kent In a 6 a-side game against a strong Duke of Kent team, it proved to be a game of two halves for the U15 girls on Tuesday. Despite the opposition starting brightly and enjoying 90% of possession, heroic defence from the Frensham girls kept the attacks at bay. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Thursday 16th December, 2021 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT A MESSAGE FROM RICK Dear Parents The view from my office of the Surrey Hills has provided much needed relief as we have limped to the end of term. After the high in the last two weeks of being able to host the wonderful ‘Peter Pan’ and the spectacular dance and music concert in the Aldridge Theatre, to having to postpone and cancel all events this week, it has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride. I want to thank all those parents who have been supportive of the difficult decisions we have had to make, juggling our desire to run as many events as possible with the pressing need to protect the health and safety of the whole community. Plans for January Looking ahead to next term, we are planning for the worst, but hoping for the best! There is talk of a January lockdown, but what shape this may take is unknown. In the Senior School, we have asked all students to ensure that they take as many of their books, files and notes home as possible in case we have to revert to online learning. Staff are planning for this, in both the Senior and Junior Schools, but we are hopeful that this does not happen. I want to reassure you that we will do all we can to ensure that no learning is disrupted, building on the successes of our last period of online teaching and learning. Calendar Hopefully, you will have seen by now that we have published on our website the term dates up until the end of Summer 2023. As we are on the border of Surrey and Hampshire, we always need to look carefully at their published dates before we publish ours, balancing this with the HMC school dates too. We ask that parents stick to these dates when booking holidays and avoid as far as possible removing children from school. I want to mention, and I apologise for the short notice of this, that there will be an extra day's holiday at the end of February half term next term. We have a staff training day on Monday 21 February, so lessons resume on Tuesday 22 February. We have already written to boarding parents to say that if you are unable to change flights then boarders are welcome to return as usual on Sunday 20th February, and they will be supervised in the boarding houses on the 21st. Fee Invoices An important message from the Bursar and the Finance team. You will shortly be receiving your Spring term fee invoices by email and we want to remind you that we will never change our bank account details without plenty of prior notification. If you are ever unsure of the school’s bank account details or would just like to confirm them before you make a payment, please don’t hesitate to call the Finance Department on 01252 792299 or email us. We would also like to let you know that paying your child’s school fees by direct debit remains one of the safest ways to pay. If you do not have a direct debit set up and would like to arrange this for the Summer term fees, please get in touch via FeesAdmin@frensham.org If you do pay by direct debit, total fees (per your invoice) will be taken from your chosen bank account on the first day of every term. School Values You will be aware that we launched the new school values this term. We have been working hard behind the scenes on a number of ways of instilling these values across the school. On a practical level, we have used them in the Junior School to help with the creation of a new behaviour charter to help children understand their rights and responsibilities both in and out of the classroom. In the Senior School, we draw attention to them in weekly notices, departments have been looking at ways of incorporating them into their curriculum planning, and we have made them a part of any staff recruitment processes we have conducted this term, with specific focus on asking values-based questions of candidates. We sincerely hope that parents embrace our values too and on the whole, interactions with parents are nearly always positive and in the spirit of togetherness and mutual respect that is at the heart of Frensham. On rare occasions, these interactions aren’t as positive and I wanted to reassure you that we always aim to do the very best for the children in our care. Of course, we get things wrong sometimes, but by approaching issues with generosity of spirit the school, and the community around it will be enhanced and enriched. I want to end by thanking you again for your support. We are pleased that for the majority of the term we have been able to run things as close to normal as possible, and we have really enjoyed the opportunity to interact with parents on a number of occasions. We are planning further opportunities next term, COVID-dependent, and we look forward to seeing you all again soon. Have a wonderful (COVID-free) Christmas and New Year with loved ones. Best wishes Rick RICK A MESSAGE FROM KATHERINE Dear Parents, I want to thank you for your support in what has personally and professionally been a tough term, we got there! I am so very sad that we are not finishing the term with all the children onsite. I want to wish all of our Year 5 and other children who are not in school well and we hope we can be back together in the New Year. Today we say goodbye to Louise Dixon who has been working in our Early Years at Frensham for almost 6 years. She is a kind, thoughtful and much-loved member of staff who we will miss terribly as she moves back in Nursing in the new year. Thank you for everything Louise and we will welcome you back to say a full goodbye with a full cohort of children and staff in January. I am looking forward to spending next term as a hand over with Nick as he will be taking over as Head of the Junior School at Easter when I move on. This time will support a smooth transition in what is an ever-changing national picture. Lastly, I wholeheartedly hope that each every one of our community gets to spend their Christmas with the ones they love because it really has been a challenging few years. Take care one and all! Take care, Katherine NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES Year 7 to 13 Lateral Flow Home Testing Kits and New Covid Guidelines Unfortunately, the lateral flow home testing kits have not arrived before the end of term. They will, however, be here for the start of next term and we will be able to hand out kits to students on their return. Students will also be tested on site before they return to lessons, unless exempt. More details to follow from Becks. You can get LFD kits from: https://www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests Please Look Carefully at the Covid Flowcharts Below Communication Regarding January Start Times We will communicate with you on 6th January regarding any staggered start times for our January return. Please keep an eye on your email. Year 10/11 GCSE History trip 11-12 March 2022 Sadly, the increasing Covid regulations have meant two significant changes to the History GCSE trip this year. Firstly the dates have changed from 17-19 March to 11-12 March 2022 . Secondly it has become a UK-based trip rather than to France and Belgium. Read More GCSE Drama students & BTEC Performing Arts student PLEASE GET YOUR PERMISSIONS AND MONEY IN FOR THE TRIP ASAP!! The trip is on 17th March 2022. Read More THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM THIS WEEK FRENSHAM CHRISTMAS ELF The Frensham Christmas elf has been entertaining the staff and students this week with naughty antics all over the school. Have a look at what he's been up this week. Enjoy! The videos will be available to watch until the new year. CLICK FOR THE ADVENT CALENDAR MUSIC & DANCE CONCERT We are so proud of all the students who performed in last week’s Performing Arts Concert. A welcome celebration and what better way to bring our theatre back to life. They were all stars, shining through a dismal and uncertain time to bring us some holiday cheer and make us all smile. Thanks to all involved, for your hard work, perseverance, and fabulousness!! N to 3: LIGHTS, CAMEL, ACTION - THE SEQUIN! On Monday Nursery – Year 3 performed their Christmas production to the children in Years 4, 5 and 6. The children had put so much effort into practising and learning their lines, the songs and all the moves – they were fantastic! They thoroughly enjoyed getting dressed up in their costumes and showing the results of their hard work. All the regular nativity characters were on stage in a Strictly style performance. There was certainly some razzle and dazzle as each group performed a song or a dance for the judges - the Smallest Sheep, the Funky Camel and Caesar and Augustus. A final ceilidh involved all the children celebrating the Christmas story together. YEARS 4 TO 6 CHRISTMAS SHOWCASE Although we were unable to have parents in the audience for our Years 4 to 6 Christmas Showcase, the children put on a great show for each other and their friends in Years N to 3. Year 4 put on a wonderful ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree!' and explained ‘How to Trap a Christmas Dragon’ with their funny poem recital! Year 5 enjoyed a ‘Hollie Jolly’ Christmas dance and recited some amusing letters to Santa! Folowed up with a wonderful musical rendition of ‘Frosty the Snowman’ - has a very shiny Ukulele! Year 6 delighted with a magical performance of 'Winter Wonderland' and performed their Winter Poems – written, choreographed, and performed by the children! Our junior ECA singers brought the show to close with their delightful rendition of ‘Turn down the lights’! MOSAICS ECA Here are the remarkable results from our Year 7 ECA. We've had a great time smashing tiles, making clay treasure and carefully aligning the mosaic pieces. Great work! Amy and Sonia TRIP TO HAMPTON COURT Years 1 to 3 went on a trip to Hampton Court last week! EARLY YEARS CERAMICS Early years went to the ceramics department and made Christmas tree decorations last week! YEAR 7 GERMAN Year 7 German students have been writing to Father Christmas (der Weihnachtsmann) in their lessons this week. Let's hope he writes back! JUNIOR SCHOOL FOOD BANK COLLECTION Thank you to the whole Junior School who have been bringing in food items for our local food bank. Members of Year 6 helped to pack and deliver the bags and boxes to Rowledge Church, our nearest food bank drop-off point. Reverend Russ was very pleased to receive them all and thanked the children for their help and generosity. CERAMICS ECAs Some wonderful final pieces from Ceramics ECAs including candle holders, animal coil pots and mugs. JUNIOR SCHOOL CHRISTMAS Today the Junior School all had a chance to meet Father Christmas in the outdoor classroom area. He answered lots of important questions - like how he gets into houses without chimneys - apparently by squeezing through cat and dog flaps. The teachers were asked to confirm that the children had been good this term, which they obviously all have. Father Christmas then quizzed them on the names of his reindeer and in return the Year 6 children tested his knowledge of languages (as he’d need them to travel around the world). He managed French, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese and Russian, but struggled with Malay and Icelandic! They were sent back to their classrooms to finish off their Christmas lists with small presents that could fit in his sleigh. The children then had homemade Christmas biscuits and Father Christmas headed off through the woods to finish getting ready for the big day. SHAKESPEARE BOXES Year 8 have been creative in English producing their Shakespeare memory boxes. They were all outstanding. Becks, Alison and Noel had a tough job judging them! The over all winner for the Year 8 Shakespeare project was Luca (from Kate’s class). Runners up were: Olivia (the winner from Sam’s class). Scarlett (the winner from Amelia’s class). James (the winner from Zoe’s class). Well done everyone! FARNHAM HELP FOR REFUGEES Trish, from Farnham Help for Refugees, has just collected all of your numerous kind donations of food, stationary, clothing and even a bicycle to be taken to a local group of refugees. Your thoughtfulness and quick action on this will make others have a brighter Christmas. THIS WEEK'S SPORTS REPORT SPORTS REPORT Inter House Sport Week Over the past week we have completed several house events in Football, Netball, Dodgeball and Fitness. We take part in house events and points are awarded and contribute to the house cup at the end of the school year. Inter House Football Last Thursday, the year 7 and year 8 pupils took part in the annual end of season house football competition. The house competitions require a great deal of teamwork, leadership, organisation, and commitment from the pupils, and it is always great to see pupils demonstrate this when they come together in their houses. In the year 7 tournament, Douglas started strongly and continued this form to remain unbeaten in all their fixtures. Ensor and King battled it out for the runners up spot and it was taken by Ensor on goal difference. In the year 8 tournament, It was incredibly tight between Douglas, Ensor and King, all finishing the group stages on 6 points. Douglas and King progressed to the final on goal difference and Douglas took the top spot once again. Ensor took a well-deserved 3rd spot following a play-off to Nevill. Well done to Douglas on the two wins and well done to all houses on a great afternoon of football. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 14th January, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT MENUS NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK Dear Parents Happy New Year to all of you. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday with your families and that you managed to avoid Covid wherever possible! We appreciate your support for the additional measures we've had to put in place to manage the COVID pandemic, particularly the new measures that the government has asked us to implement. We believe but these measures will be reviewed by the government in about 2 weeks' time, so look out for further information from Becks in due course. We are delighted, of course, that so many of our normal activities are able to happen with sports, music, dance and drama and all other ECAs all happening as usual. Last night saw the first of our senior school postponed dinner dances for Years 7 and 8 and I was delighted to see so many of them having so much fun together at the start of this term. Events for other senior school year groups continue next week. School surveys You will have seen a letter from me this morning containing some links to two surveys. Between now and half term this term, we are going to be sending out short surveys each week to get your views on various areas of the school. This week it is boarding and school transport, and we would appreciate as many responses as possible to help us improve our provision. Inspection It is worth me mentioning that we are anticipating being inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) this term. The focus is on educational quality, and the inspectors will be in school for four days, looking closely at everything we do. Part of this will be asking parents to fill in a questionnaire, with a fairly quick turnaround, on your child’s experience at the school, and on your experience as a parent. We will let you know as soon as this is requested, and you will receive a letter from me with a link to the ISI survey. We are rightly proud of the many things we do well at the school, and of the distinctive nature of Frensham, which we hope to demonstrate when the inspectors are here. Of course, the greatest adverts for the school are our wonderful students, who we know will be open, honest and engaging advocates for a school of which I know they are justifiably proud. Have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes Rick RICK KATHERINE A MESSAGE FROM KATHERINE CLICK FOR KATHERINE'S MESSAGE NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES Midsummer Night's Dream We are looking ahead to our production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream later this term and are in need of some set dressing. Do you have any artificial trees in pots, or any artificial plants, ivy, flowers etc that could be used to help create our forest? We’d also welcome real trees in pots if you were happy to donate rather than lend to us! If you have these or any other items you think might be useful and could bring into school in the next couple of weeks, we would be very grateful. Please could you contact me directly: amandaliddle@frensham.org Many thanks, Amanda Singing Distinction Jasmine in Year 10 received a distinction in her Grade 5 Singing Exam. Well done Jasmine! Fee Invoice A quick reminder that fees are due on or before the first day of term. If you’ve yet to settle this term’s bill, please could you make a bank transfer as soon as possible. We want to remind you that we will never change our bank account details without plenty of prior notification. If you are ever unsure of the school’s bank account details or would just like to confirm them before you make a payment, please don’t hesitate to call the Finance Department on 01252 792299 or email us at FeesAdmin@frensham.org . We would also like to let you know that paying your child’s school fees by direct debit remains one of the safest and easiest ways to pay as total fees (per your invoice) will be taken from your chosen bank account on the first day of every term. If you do not have a direct debit set up and would like to arrange this for the Summer term fees, please do get in touch. Malawi 2023 Calling On Thursday 27th January we are holding a Malawi 2023 meeting in the Ballroom and hopefully on-line for those students who have already signed up for the trip and any who are still undecided. Remember, you need to be in Year 11 or above in September 2022 to take part. I am going to be talking about the trip itself from a Frensham point of view. Hopefully there will be a couple of students who will also speak of their trip there in 2019. Please do join us at 7pm for a glass of wine and more detailed information. Sally Music and Dance Concert We'll be sharing the recording of the Music and Dance Concert in next week's newsletter. So keep an eye out! EVENTS THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM THIS WEEK MAIN HOUSE BOARDERS Main House made guacamole in Main House using Belize 's very own avocados from her home in Tanzania. YEAR 7 & 8 DINNER DANCE What a great evening we had! Everyone made an effort to dress smartly which was lovely to see. The food was enjoyed and plates were left empty. The students chose the playlist so the music seemed to go down well. We have never before had children ask for a disco to be turned down as it was too loud, but for many we believe this was the first disco they had been to! FOREST SCHOOL AND JUNIOR OUTDOOR ED This week, the Juniors have had an amazing time in Forest School and Outdoor Education. Nursery experimented with what different sounds objects or natural materials make, leading into making music and thinking about how we can play instruments softly or hard, slowly or fast, changing our patterns or trying to play in time with others. Both Reception, Year 2 and Year 3 looked at connecting with Nature, selecting a natural item from the forest and using all of our senses to examine it. We wrote descriptive words down and used them to make short stories, rhymes, or poems. Year 4 completed a sound map. This involved sitting in a hidden spot in the forest and listening to all the different sounds they could hear, picking them apart and representing them on paper. Finally, for their Outdoor Education lesson Year 5 and 6 did amazingly well and explored how to pitch a tent. We discussed some factors to consider such as site, weather conditions, proximity to other tents, how far to cook from the tents. CLIMBING AT SURREY SPORTS PARK It was great to see Climbing resume at Surrey Sports Park this week where we had a focus on body movement, balance and an introduction to dynoing. Each and every week our climbers are showing good progression by continually adding new tools to their toolbox enabling them to climb in a more fluid and controlled manner. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 10th December, 2021 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT MENUS NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK Watch Rick's Video Message RICK A MESSAGE FROM KATHERINE Dear Frensham community, With only four more days before we break up, we intend to put in as much festive fun as possible in the run up to the holiday! It has been a real treat to welcome the children into school today in their PJs. Frensham is such a friendly special place, but even more so when everyone is in their snuggly outfits. I am sorry that we are having to make last minute changes to our plans for next week, but I really do hope you understand we do not want the events to influence anyone's Christmas plans as we are so close to the big day. With isolation periods of 10 days we want to ensure everyone can have an enjoyable time. Our Years 4-6 showcase and Years N-3 play started to take form today with some technical rehearsals. All the children will have the opportunity to watch each other on Monday for their Dress rehearsals. Years 4 to 6 Christmas Showcase On Tuesday, we start with our Years 4 to 6 Christmas showcase, and we do ask that parents bring along their singing voices because we will be asking you to join in a few numbers! As we will be outside, please wrap up warm and seating will be available for those who are unable to stand. This will take place in the front courtyard outside of Main House after drop off at 8.45am. The event is expected to last no longer than 45 minutes. Years N to 3 Lights Camel Action: The Sequin Followed hot on its heels is Lights Camel Action: The Sequin with Nursery to Year 3. As this event could not be moved outside, we have made the decision to continue this event in the Theatre but move to two performances to further reduce the amount of people watching. Performance one - 9.30am you are welcome to pop home and arrive at 9.15am or you can make your way over to the front of Main House for hot chocolate and mince pies, after Drop off, before being taken to the Theatre for 9.15am to be shown to your seats. Performance two - 2.30pm as planned and will be without refreshments. Please do arrive at 2.15pm to be shown to your seats. We still ask that only two people per child come and watch across the two performances to limit numbers. Please fill in the form below to confirm you can attend and which performance as we are ideally trying to split the adults in attendance across the two productions. Thank you so much for your flexibility. https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=eAZCpZbL5k6HffgdfK3cA_5aTwAMJEdFpPY8skfwEOVUMkVPRFNLVFFXQlFVQkk5VzlMUUQwT09ESy4u Just a reminder that Late Stay on Thursday will only run until 4.10pm to support parents with children in Year 7 and above. CLICK FOR THE ADVENT CALENDAR YEAR 5 TUDOR BANQUET Our Year 5 children were treated to a Tudor banquet to continue bringing their topic to life (after flying a kestrel last week). Complete with roast fowl, mead (ginger beer) and a court jester - their lunch was the envy of the rest of the dining room! PETER PAN It was exciting and delightful to be back in our wonderful Aldridge Theatre performing Peter Pan last week. The children worked hard to create and find costumes from recycled and re-used clothing and the set was mainly created from reclaimed wood and items that live in the school, in an attempt to make everyone think more about our common learnt expectations versus current possible actions in a wish to protect our planet. YEAR 8 SHAKESPEARE IN A BOX COMPETITION The culmination of the study of a Shakespeare play in Year 8 this term is a memory box presentation. These have been happening across each of the classes ready for the grand final to be judged next week! The competition is really hotting up as these pictures from Zoe’s group prove! SATURDAY CERAMICS WORKSHOP Michele and Ashley led a really successful ceramics workshop on Saturday. YEAR 8 ART BOOKS Great work over the term is all held inside a collaged book cover. Watch out Year 8 parents as these should all be coming home sometime soon. Thank you for all your creative energies! YEAR 9 MASTER COPIERS Our Year 9 students have been making copies of Van Gogh drawings. Really lively responses which will be presented in a sketchbook page. ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS IN YEAR 6 Over the last 6 weeks, Year 6 have been testing different electrical circuits and completing different challenges. They have been working towards building a working prototype of a festive light design of their choice. These were presented in a Dragon’s Den-esque style! The children were able to show these as a scientific illustration, drawing and physical prototype with lights, motors, and buzzers. They worked incredibly hard and were able to answer the Dragon’s tricky questions! CYBERFIRST GIRLS COMPETITION Our two teams have been taking part in the CyberFirst Girls competition over the past week. The competition closes this week and both teams working hard during every break, lunch and after school to become Super Cyber Sleuths. Both teams managed to achieve very respectable scores of around 1100 points which is incredible and they have all learnt some great skills. Lily said she has most enjoyed getting the opportunity to do something different with friends whilst building her teamwork and cyber skills. YEAR 4 - 3D CHRISTMAS CARDS Year 4 have worked hard to create beautiful Christmas cards to send out to local residential homes. The 3D Christmas tree inside the card was pretty tricky for them, but the children persisted and achieved these lovely cards. Some local residents will be pleased! ECOHEIGHTS BIRD BOXES On Wednesday Year 6 were invited to make birdboxes. The Eco Heights team, specifically Maxi and Sebastien, had been hard at work creating packs including detailed instructions and labelled wood. Year 6 were split into small groups and worked alongside Year 8 students to create a bird box, overseen by Neil and a few sixth formers. They were able to use an electric drill to secure the parts and then sanded the outside. After they completed the bird box, the groups went out onto the school grounds to find a suitable tree. They had to ensure that the tree was wide and tall enough whilst looking for a location that was easily accessible by the birds. Look out for these popping up, we are hoping to see birds using them in the new year! Thank you for all the hard work that was put into this project! A LEVEL PSYCHOLOGY IN ACTION EVENT Today, our A Level Psychology students have had the amazing opportuntiy, thanks to Andrew Moore, to get involved in the online event "Psychology in Action". This event had a wide-ranging programme examining the theories and applications of psychology in the modern world. Five incredibly engaging sessions with speakers from academia and industry helped the students realise their potential and discover the impact they can have on the world - also complemented by a special session on examination success. Sessions included: How to Engineer an Extreme Emotion with Brendan Walker, Professor of Creative Industries at Middlesex University The Gendered Brain with Gina Rippon, Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Neuroimaging at the Aston Brain Centre The Psychology of a Magician with Dr Matt Pritchard, award-winning magician The Perils of Perception: Why We're Wrong About Nearly Everything with Bobby Duffy, Professor of Public Policy and Director of the Policy Institute at King’s College London Mastering Memory with Alina Ivan, part of the Braintastic! Science team EARLY YEARS CHRISTMAS CRAFT AND SONG SESSION On Tuesday parents in Nursery and Reception joined us in an outdoor, socially distanced Christmas Craft and Song session. Everyone made a Christmas tree with their parent using sticks and twine. We then battled storm Barra as Judith accompanied us to 'Jingle Bells' and some other songs. We value process, content and relationships in Early Years and this event enabled our families to enjoy that. Seeing the expressions on everyone's faces demonstrated how much just spending time together in this way is critical for our youngest children's development and happiness. Thank you for coming in such weather! STUDENT TEACHING ASSISTANTS Each Wednesday a group of our Sixth Formers are visiting Rowledge C of E School and working in an individual classroom to learn about life in another school in a supportive capacity. Next term, we are planning to deliver workshops on well-being, Dance, Drama, Geography and Languages - a true partnership. SNUGGLY PJ DAY It was snuggly PJ today and students and staff could be spotted around the site keeping warm in their snuggly pjs and onesies. CLAY AQUARIUMS Beautiful clay aquariums fresh out of the kiln in the ceramics workshop. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 26th November, 2021 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT MENUS NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK Watch Rick's Video Message RICK KATHERINE A MESSAGE FROM KATHERINE Spotlight on the Junior School Dear Frensham Community, Well, that was a busy week! As you will see there have been birds of prey flying at Frensham and a fabulous author visiting to talk to our children about refugees. The children in the Junior School have been inspired by so many things this week and it was wonderful to share them in our assembly today. We also spoke about how it is important to have a go, make mistakes and turn them into a positive. I shared the amazing book ‘Beautiful oops’ with them which is all about how a mistake might actually open up a new possibility. At Frensham we want our children to be happy to take risks, make mistakes and grow from them just like us as grown-ups! We're also wondering if anyone in our amazing community knows someone lovely who lives locally and would be able to join our team in January to work in our Nursery – Year 3 Late Stay. It would suit someone who would love to come and play, laugh and create things for just two hours every afternoon from 3:30-5:30. They do not need qualifications but experience with younger children would be great even if that's not in a school setting. Perhaps a wonderful grandparent in the local area would be interested in some company (the teachers and children are a delightful bunch who will always brighten up anyone’s day!). Do please push our advert out to anyone you think would be suitable, thank you in advance for any help you can give. www.frensham.org/working-at-frensham Lastly, a big thank you to FoF for your secret squirrel mission to make Christmas special for the children in the Junior School. Thank you for everything you are doing. Have a lovely stormy weekend! Katherine NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES Dropping Off at Reception If you're dropping off or picking up your child at Reception, please drive really carefully and slowly in the area in front of Main House - students and staff are crossing this area at all times of the day. For more information go to the website http://www.shynefest.uk/ Also Sara (Year 7 parnet) has donated some of her fragrant vegan and cruelty free candles which smell amazing. www.theuniversalsoulcompany.com Another big thank you is to parents in Junior school who are working together to deliver the “swap shop” where the JS students can chose presents for their parents and have them gift wrapped ready for Christmas Day, and a super decorated Santa’s grotto where Santa will greet the students ready to check they are ready for the big day. We have also had a Christmas tree to make the area more festive donated by Castle Street Flowers in Farnham. The choir is led by Sam Rolles, a former Frensham pupil, and his father, Edwin, who was formerly Director of Music at Frensham Heights. The cost is £5 per session. Come along for a free taster session. Any tenors or basses particularly welcome. Please see our website: rowledgecommunitychoir.co.uk or contact Liz Bownass-Clark: liz@frensham.org . UPCOMING SCHOOL EVENTS EVENTS PETER PAN - THURS 2 & FRI 3 DECEMBER We began exploring the story of Peter Pan in our Yr 7 & 8 Drama club and we are now bringing you a creative play that the teachers and children have developed whilst meeting together. We have tried to bring this to the stage at a minimal cost to the environment asking the children to make their costumes from re-using, recycling or buying items from charity shops. The set has been designed by Dolly Moon-Kilner in Year 8 and is being built by Shaun and Nicky from our very own Aldridge Theatre using as few new items as possible. Please look out for wood reclaimed from the outdoor theatre and old pieces of set that have been altered to suit this play. All in all - a production with everyone sharing ideas and thinking of the planet whilst enjoying being together rehearsing and performing. Monies raised will be going to Great Ormond Street Hospital, an extremely worthwhile cause. Buy tickets here MUSIC & DANCE CONCERT - 9TH DECEMBER It's time for our Music and Dance Concert. Come along and see the Aldridge alive again with Music and Dance Performances from our Years 7 and up students. Tickets are free, but please book a place below. The competition takes place over a period of 10 days and the teams will face a series of online challenges aimed at testing their skills on different areas of cyber security, such as cracking code and working through logic problems. With less than 15% of the workforce in cyber security being female, the primary objective of the competition is to inspire girls to consider career options they may not have thought about. Sarah Cull (Head of IT and Computer Science) has been working alongside a school mum, Paula Page, who is the director of her own Cyber Security company to inspire the girls and to make them aware of potential exciting career opportunities available to them if they enjoy the competition. “This is an incredible opportunity for the girls to try something new and I am hoping they will enjoy the challenges the face over the next 10 days and build some resilience and teamwork skills, as well as their technical skills” explained Sarah. To find out more about the NCSC and what they can offer to all students, visit https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/cyberfirst/overview HADRIAN'S WALL MEDALS To celebrate the success of their trip to Hadrian's Wall in September and the amazing Time Traveller's Guides to Roman Britain, Year 7 students were all awarded with gold ceramic medals made by Amy and Sonia. The students also really enjoyed seeing some of the photos they captured on the trip. MFL PLAYS The MFL department have organised for students studying French, Spanish and German to watch plays performed by Onatti Productions. French students watched Mon Père Ne Me Comprend Pas on 5th November. Spanish students were set to watch En el Campamento today (but this has been postponed for a bit due to postive Covid cases in the cast) and German students will get to watch Horoskop in March. YEAR 8 ART Making decisions this week about how to arrange collage pieces to get best visual results. Considering balance, chaos, jumbles and more. YEAR 7 ART Absolutely amazing work from Year7 whilst we draw our animals and consider how best to simplify shapes and add pattern. We'll done year7. YEAR 5 KESTRELS On Thursday Year 5 welcomed Andy Crowle from Urban Wings to Frensham. Andy is a falconer and he brought two kestrels called Tee-ki and Gizmo with him. He also brought a peregrine falcon called Gus. As part of their Tudor topic this term, the children have been listening to a story set in Tudor times called ‘Treason’ by Berlie Doherty. The main character is given a kestrel by Henry VIII. Andy talked to the children about the stunning birds of prey. He explained that many phrases and words we have such as ‘hoodwinked,’ ‘fed up,’ ‘under your thumb,’ ‘wrapped around your little finger,’ and ‘end of my tether’ originate from the world of falconry. He also explained that servants would have had kestrels, but Royalty would have had the more expensive birds such as the peregrine. He told the children that people would be seen walking in the street with a bird of prey on their hand. The children asked Andy many questions and they were able to wear a thick gauntlet so that Tee-ki could fly and land on them to take a morsel of chicken or Gus could perch comfortably. It was a super afternoon, sunny but cold. We hope that it will be possible to welcome Urban Wings back to Frensham in the future. Please flick through the photos taken during the afternoon. THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE Year 7s have been investigating types of waves. They used slinkies to demonstrate the motion of these types of waves. Year 8 are exploring density and pressure. We constructed a Cartesian diver and observed the effects of increased pressure on buoyancy. Some of our Year 9s have been discovering osmosis and how the mass of potatoes change depending on the concentration of the solution they’re in. Year 11s have dived into learning about the inheritance of genetic traits by building reebop marshmallow organisms based on the genes inherited. YEAR 9 HORIZONS - CAREERS AND GCSE OPTIONS On 17th and 24th November in their Developing Horizons lessons, Year 9 spent time thinking about careers and their future pathway at Frensham. As part of this, they heard from the teachers who lead the 'new' options that will be on offer for them in September 2023. These subjects are Esports, Business, Performing Arts, Sports Studies, Computer Science, Graphic Communication and Photography. The Year 9 students were engaged throughout and asked a number of excellent questions. There was a definite buzz around school following this as they excitedly looked through the options booklets and digested what they had learned. The student feedback was very positive: "The sessions were good, the options session helped me understand about the process and how it works. It was interesting to learn about the new courses that I haven't studied." "I enjoyed it because I learned more about the subjects I could do." – Lexie "I definitely think it was useful as it widened my views on what I can take." – Heidi YR R & 1 FRENCH A group of dinosaurs came to French last week! Inspired by our one third story “How the dinosaur got it’s shoes”, Years R and 1 put on their masks for a video performance where they introduced themselves in French and talked about their own chaussures. The have been learning numbers, colours, introductions, simple instructions and adjectives whilst reading about Terrance T-Rex, designing masks and running around the playground hunting for my shoes! They have been fantastique!! TEALIGHTS IN CERAMICS Years 6 - 9 have been making animal tea light/candle holders, ready to light up the dark evenings. ADVENT CALENDAR Hamilton House is getting festive with the addition of Debbie's fantastic handmade advent calendar! YEAR 6 AUTHOR VISIT In Year 6 we have been learning about refugees. Last week we were joined by Danielle (Draven’s mum) who talked to us about her work in Calais, shared lots of her own experiences as well as those of people she has worked with along the way. She shared several stories with us, including one about her friend who is a UN worker and had to return to England in a refrigeration van. Year 6 really enjoyed this and were able to link lots of their learning from topic, English and art lessons. We have been inspired by our learning and want to support local refugee families and have been in touch with Farnham help for Refugees and Farnham Foodbank. We discussed this with Olivia, who was hoping to complete a reverse advent calendar, and have decided to put our ideas together. From the 1st – 10th December we will be collecting items, we would love it if the children in the Junior school could bring a different item in each day and there will be collection spots in the Junior School Hall and 4-6 atrium. We have asked what they would find most useful, and they have said: UHT cows’ milk, long life fruit juice, orange squash, chocolate bars, sweets, snacks (not nuts), tinned carrots, tinned peas and tinned tomatoes. Look out for our posters around school for any more information. Today Ele Fountain, author of Boy87, came to speak with us as part of the enrichment programme. She shared information about her time in Ethiopia and how that inspired her writing. She also talked about the process involved to publish a book and the children had a chance to ask her lots of questions. We then took part in a creative writing workshop. This involved them creating a ‘tree’ plan, they are all enthused about writing these stories and left the workshop with the challenge to return after lunch with their first line ready to engage a reader. YEAR 10 CHARITY STALL Last Friday Jeff’s tutor group in Year 10 created a hot chocolate and cookies stall with the help of a few Year 7 & 8 outreach volunteers. They raised £75 in aid of Lymphoma Action. Thank you to you for raising our awareness and adding to Hugo’s fundraising total overall. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 19th November, 2021 CLICK TO NAVIGATE RICK'S MESSAGE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT MENUS NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK A MESSAGE FROM KATHERINE Spotlight on the Junior School This week we have had a focus on Anti-bullying week which as we know is not just a week but is something we believe should be a focus everyday. In their Emerging Horizons lessons with Nick this week they have been learning about the four main types of Bullying (Physical, Verbal, Social and Cyber). They have explored what these can look like and empowered them to stand up and know who to go to for support to make it stop. It was lovely to have an assembly this week to round up the week with all our children from Reception to Year 6. We even had the treat of lovely performance from a group of Year 5 & 6 students from the Drama ECA who have scripted their own piece called ‘The Golden Crayon’. Thank you for cheering up our day! The theme this year was ‘one kind word' and our children came up with some absolute crackers to share with others to uplift each other and show their strengths. Perseverance, Spirit, Happiness and Independence. What word would you use as an inspirational kind word? Have a lovely weekend, Katherine RICK KATHERINE Dear Parents I have spent time this week thinking about our school values and the importance of being a values-led organisation. I enjoyed chatting to one of our parents a week ago about his experiences in another organisation of resetting values and then embedding them across everything they do, and this is the journey we are now on. Two examples of this in action: with new appointments of staff pending, we are using the values to underpin our recruitment process, and we have used the values to help draft a Junior School approach to behaviour inside and outside the classroom. I am also working with the Senior School student council on how they would like to use the new values to underpin the student experience in the school. As you will expect, with the end of term not far away, we have a number of community events coming up that we are excited to be running. We will be sending out separate communications about these events and I look forward to seeing many of you on site in due course. Have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes Rick NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES Anti-Bullying Week 2021 It’s been a highly impactful week at Frensham in promoting the Anti-Bully theme across the Whole School. From Early Years all the way through to our Sixth Form, all children will have been a part of important discussion, assemblies, talks and activities that have strongly reenforced our response to any of the four major types of bullying. The work does not stop here though! The children have been challenged to continue to support and promote this message of ‘Anti-Bullying’ across all of the spaces they inhabitant, whether that be on or off-line. If you didn’t manage to see the ‘Anti-Bullying’ Sway that went out last week which shared lots of key information then please do engage with it through this link: Anti-Bullying Sway In there, there is also a very supportive Parent Pack that has loads of guidance for you as parents / carers. The link for this is in Sway yet also below as well: Parent Pack Take care and have a lovely weekend, Nick O-T and Jack MALAWI 2023! Students have been learning about what being trans means, pronouns, and how to ensure that they are being kind & respectful towards others. We have also celebrated trans role models in subject areas, from Erica Rutherford in Art to Shea Diamond in Music, as well as Verity Smith in PE and Pierre Davis in Technology. Students have also reflected on how learning about the trans experience helps to express our Frensham values, of celebrating authenticity & individuality, as well as building a kind community based on respect & understanding. One of our current Y13 students, Gabe, has kindly offered the following words on why celebrating Trans Awareness Week at Frensham is so important: “Since the beginning of the LGBT rights movement, transgender women of colour have led the way despite facing extreme levels of hatred and violence from both those outside the community and within it. Nowadays those women are so often cast aside and replaced in retellings and history with more socially acceptable LGBT people- lost in time with so few even knowing their names. The quote “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” seems especially applicable here as in recent years we have seen a sharp increase in transphobia in all facets of society. For example, the BBC, a news source that has long claimed to be impartial, recently platformed and listened to a group that call for the extermination of transgender people leading to them dropping out of Stonewall’s diversity scheme. Similarly, in 2018, London pride was allowed by officials to be headed up by a group made up mainly of Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists- those who believe that transgender people are a corrupting and threatening force. In fact, transgender people are far more likely to become victims of abuse and violence than perpetrators with, according to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, 2021 being one of the deadliest years for transgender people since they began recording not to mention the detrimentally high suicide rates amongst transgender people of all ages (more than ¼ having attempted and 9/10 having seriously contemplated). Transgender Awareness Week takes place between the 13th and 19th of November and culminates in Transgender Day of Remembrance, its is a time to learn about the history and struggles of transgender people as well as remember those we have lost. It is important to recognise this in school because the adults of tomorrow are created here, and the future will call for a wider acceptance and recognition of transgender issues; we aren’t something that will go away, particularly as antagonised as we are.” Click the image to see the presentation WORLD PHILOSOPHY DAY The PRE department celebrated World Philosophy Day on Thursday by having a joint debate with students from King Edward’s School, Bath. Students from Y10 and above came together to discuss whether the British monarchy should die with the Queen, with people reflecting on the financial, as well as the cultural, implications. Despite a few technical issues with the microphone and feedback (the perils of 21st century education!), students were really engaged and enjoyed having the chance to share their thoughts with, and hear from, a broader range of voices. Well done to all those who participated – staff at King Edward’s commented on how fantastic the students were and how lovely Frensham is. We’re hoping to be able to make these events a more regular occurrence so keep your eyes peeled for more opportunities in future… YEAR 12 GEOGRAPHY TRIP On Friday the Year 12 Geographers braved some inclement weather and a long coach ride, to complete Coasts Fieldwork at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. The trip aimed to expose the Year 12s to a selection of fieldwork techniques, and to partially prepare them for their NEAs, which they start at the end of Y12. It was a grey day in the morning, but we were lucky to arrive at Lulworth with blue skies and a little bit of sunshine. The Geographers were guided down to Lulworth Cove, stopping to take note of the unique geology and geomorphology along the way. They collected data samples from two different beach sites, one in Lulworth Cove and the other at Durdle Door. However, it was at Durdle Door that the weather turned, and we got soaked returning up the hill to the minibus. Fortunately, we had already recorded the data we came for, and we hopped on the minibus to return to school. Wet, but content in a job well done.
