FOF AWARDS One of the fundamental purposes of Friends of Frensham, as a parent association and registered Charity, is to raise funds that can be used for the benefit of the school. Our aim is to enable the school to pay for events, activities or equipment outside the core school budget with the objective of providing funds that will benefit & support the children across both the Junior & Senior School. Awards are granted throughout the year and FOF are delighted to say approval was given at the latest Board meeting for two awards. To enable Greenpower to purchase a branded gazebo that will be used to either shelter the students from the extreme sun / heat (such as at the lotus race) or provide cover from the storms throughout the season. Greenpower has been a huge success at Frensham over the past three seasons. It’s a brilliant ECA and one that impacts on many students that come through the years at Frensham. To enable the Junior School to create a special wellbeing hub in the 4-6 part of the JS by converting a group room space. The room would be for children who may be struggling emotionally at any point in the day, for ELSA Interventions and any other children who may need time and space and a calm environment to be in 1/1 1/1 1/1 THIS WEEK THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM 1/1 1/1 BOARDING ACTIVITIES Last week HH started to get ready for Christmas by making their own Christmas decorations which will be used to decorate the house this year. RH and MH will be catching up this week by starting on the house decorations. Esports was very popular last half term, so Tim offered another session last week which was once again very well attended across the houses. At the weekend RH had a wine tasting and cheese evening, which they all thoroughly enjoyed. MH and HH enjoyed a Friday night big screen movie. On Saturday we had a fabulous trip to Winter Wonderland, the skies were blue, and the sun was shining. A few of our students were very brave and went on some of the biggest rides at the fair. After Winter Wonderland we wondered over to Oxford street for some Christmas shopping and an opportunity to see the start of the Christmas lights coming on. For the more energetic amongst us there was a trip to Ninja Warrior on Sunday which tests many aspects of fitness. Our students certainly did a fantastic job on all the challenges put in front of them. 1/13 MORNING TALK - SØREN KIERKEGAARD Last week's Morning Talk was a fascinating overview of Søren Kierkegaard, recognised as the father of existentialism, and a groundbreaking philosopher. His focus was the responsibility of the individual person to live a meaning and purposeful life based on original Christian values. In today’s world he would have been seen as an influencer and probably been actively communicating via social media, instead of walking the streets of Copenhagen talking to the people he met on the streets. Casper Yr 13, who is a direct descendant of Søren Kierkegaard, spoke on some of the key themes from Kierkegaard’s authorship such as Leap of Faith, Individuality and Subjectivity and The Three Stages of Life. The presentation was followed by a question and answer session where students asked many fascinating questions about Kierkegaard and his life. 1/12 GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO GUNWHARF QUAYS Year 11 Geographers studied the economic, social and environmental impact of Gunwharf Quays on Monday as part of their fieldwork requirement for their GCSE Paper 3. Students collected primary data in the form of pedestrian counts, land use transects and environmental quality surveys alongside photographs to establish whether the regeneration has retained a sense of place. This week students will present their data and analysis their findings. 1/2 MAKING THE CHRISTMAS CHEMISTREE A level chemists set about making our festive chemistree. The students made a range of decorative flasks including blue copper sulphate, a variety of acid/alkalis and indicators, silver mirrors and golden rain to decorate the tree. 1/9 SUGAR AND SPICE AND ALL THINGS NICE! On Tuesday, Nursery and Reception went on another adventure, this time over to the kitchens where the wonderful Connor, our Head Chef, taught us all about pastry and how to make mince pies. We then had a go at making our own: rolling the dough; cutting out our shapes; adding the mincemeat; putting a top on; and adding the glaze and sugar as the finishing touches. They were delicious! 1/16 BEN MCCAREY - WHY FRENSHAM In today’s morning talk, Ben spoke to the senior students about why he is so excited and passionate about becoming the Head at Frensham. He talked about his own education and the influence that has had on him, both the positive and the negative, his aspirations for his own family at Frensham and some of the ideas he has for Frensham moving forward. It’s fair to say that animals played a starring role in his talk! It was wonderful to see the students engaging so warmly with him and asking lots of brilliant questions. Ben will be returning in January to join a Junior School Assembly. Thank you and well done to George Yr 11 who opened the Morning Talk with his stunning performance of Debussy’s Arabesque No.2. SIXTH FORM TRIP TO WINCHESTER CHRISTMAS MARKET 23 6th Formers had a splendid time at the Winchester Christmas Market on Thursday afternoon. Hopefully buying some Christmas presents for parents. It was a real pleasure to spend the time with them, surrounded by the lights, little boutiques, interesting things to eat and the air thick with the smells of Christmas: roasting chestnuts and steaming mulled wine. OUTREACH VISIT TO BRIGHTWELLS Each Wednesday some of the children in Year 7 and 8 give up part of their lunchtime to visit Brightwells Gostry Community Centre in Farnham and spend some time with the senior citizens who visit. The children bring some much loved energy and fun to the centre and the older people who are there to enable their families and carers to have some respite. I am always really proud of them and I think they get a lot from this too. This week they helped make Christmas decorations and put up the tree which really helped everyone to get into the Christmas spirit! 1/3 WINTER SHARING SHOW Thank you to everyone involved in last nights 'Winter Sharing Show'. It was a wonderful evening with an electric atmosphere! Thank you to the wonderful cast (of 150 students!!!) who shared some of their beautiful work from lessons and ECA's. Photos by Iola Yr 11 1/69 FARNHAM ASSIST AFTERNOON TEA Year 4 planned a "Gaming" afternoon Tea where they chatted merrily and played board games and card games with local Farnham elderly residents, including one gentleman whose realtive had been a gardener at the school in year gone by and parents or one of our receptionsists! With help from a few older students, today, everyone was a winner as the piano, played, children sung, everyone chatted and delicious cakes and scones were eaten! Hi Lynn What a lovely afternoon! Thank you so much to you and everyone at Frensham Heights for the making the afternoon so special. All our ladies and gentlemen really enjoyed it and some have already been asking about the summer event and wanting to book. As word gets around how lovely it all was I’m sure I will be inundated with requests for the next one. The singers and pianists were excellent and all our people enjoyed playing games with the younger ones, what a great idea. We will look forward to seeing you at the lunch on 3rd December, as discussed please let Fiona know your numbers. Thank you again and best wishes. On Thursday, all the donations given by Frensham Heights were passed to the central sorting location for distribution. Your donations helped to give gifts to 523 children either in outreach services or refuge and 129 women. So 7SVC would like to say thank you all so much for your donations. We are super grateful for all donations we have received. All of the kids will be super delighted about the presents they will get this year and your donations have made a difference. Lola, Cess and G (7SVC) 1/2 SPORTS REPORT SPORTS REPORT Under 13s Football v Duke of Kent The U13 football team hosted Duke of Kent for a brilliant afternoon of football on Wednesday. The opposition were a physical side and inside the first 10 minutes it was clear that they were going to press and harass Frensham. Frensham started slow and struggled with the press, however they dug in and things clicked and they played their brilliant passing brand of football that they’ve been showing all season. Frensham dominated the possession and create several chances which Alfie and Richie finished off to give Frensham a 2-0 victory. The opposition tried to fight back but Tomos pulled off a couple of brilliant saves and Harrison cleared off the line brilliantly after the forward rounded the keeper to save a sure goal. Well done all. Under 15s Netball v Duke of Kent Frensham's U15's put on another fantastic display of netball against the Duke of kent school this week. We took a while to warm up, with some erratic passes and loose balls which resulted in a number of turnovers. They picked it up though and with some tight defence and improved passing and movement as a team, the girls finished every quarter ahead. DOK worked hard though and fought back in the third quarter. Frensham responded with some small changes and they ran away with the win in the fourth. The final score was 25-15 to Frensham. Under 12s Netball v Farnborough Hill This game was always going to be a challenge for Frensham, against a strong school. Frensham worked hard throughout, with some amazing flying intercepts by Lila and Becky, which slowed down the Farnborough attack. Poppy worked tirelessly, moving the ball into the circle, resulting in a number of shots on goal by Tilly and herself. Anya moved well into space to bring the ball down the court with Lila. The defence triangle of Becky, Abi and Grace was a strong trio against a good Farnborough side. Overall, it was a good performance by all with some excellent elements of netball now being mastered. The score line did not match the efforts or the game itself. It was a 8-2 win for Farnborough on this occasion, but the whole team should be very proud of their performance. Under 9s Netball vs Churcher's What a great game for the U9s! A fresh but bright afternoon presented almost perfect playing conditions and every member of the team arrived enthusiastic. The girls were ready to put the skills they had learning in training to the test. The first quarter saw an early goal from Eleanor, thanks to some quick decisions and great passing up the court. The opposition managed to score their first goal just before the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, Frensham marked well and showed a strong defensive performance but unfortunately Churcher's made some great interceptions in our defensive third which allowed them to score two more goals, finishing at half time 3-1. The third quarter saw the team seeking out their players in a quicker fashion which allowed them to put the pressure on, leading to the team having time to create space and rush in for the ball. In the final quarter, Churcher's were quick to score, but Frensham were hot on their heels with a lovely goal from Amelia, finishing the game 4-2. The team were elated to have scored some goals and it was brilliant to see how they have progressed! Under 10/11s Netball triangular v St Edmunds and Farlington The U11 team had an excellent match against St Edmund's and Farlington. In cold conditions they moved the ball well and worked on some of the things that they have been working on in training. All the hard work paid off with some lovely through court play and 2 wins. Edith was selected as player of the match in the first game (3-1 win) with some solid defending and great interceptions. Ruby was selected as player of the match against Farlington for her supportive play on the edge of the circle. She worked really well with the 2 attackers getting the ball nearer the post to create better shooting opportunities - this paid off with another win (3-1) after going down 1-0. Well done to everyone who played. Some great results. The U10 team played their best game of the season in their games against both St Edmund's and Farlington. With only five players, substitutions was not an option and the girls took this in their stride. Rather than starting the game at a slow pace in the cold weather, the team started strong with all players keenly marking the opposition. The team created some really fluid game play that saw an early goal from Emma. Frensham defended well and made some great interceptions, but unfortunately St Eds managed to score 2 goals in our first game against them. Our second game, against Farlington, saw the positions change slightly and the team looked calm and collected on court. The girls showed textbook understanding of their recently learned skills of driving out and then in again to create space. This produced some quick and efficient passes, allowing two further goals from Emma, one goal from Charlotte and one from Amelia. Our final game was against St Ed's and the girls were really showing dominance on the court. They continued to create space and ample opportunities to make their way up court, seeing two final goals from Charlotte, who was also chosen as player of the match! 1/1 Under 18s Football v More House An absolute classic for the Under 18s on Monday evening against local rivals More House. A close encounter throughout and one of small margins. The boys worked hard and had the edge in the first half, creating some good chances against a strong goalkeeper for More House. Curtis, Arlo and Luke combined well to create some half chances. We were comfortable at the back for the majority with Morley and Ben combining well. Until a classic counterattack goal from More house put them in front. Adnan injected some pace through the middle and James P and James V were both getting forward well. It looked like it was not meant to be for Frensham, and the game drew to a close until some last attacking play resulted in not one but two goals. Firstly, Arlo scored a great volley from a corner, in off the post and with minutes to spare Luke executed a great solo finish to win the game for Frensham. More house edged the first game a few weeks back 1-0 so will do everything we can to organise a trilogy match! Under 14s Football Mayville Tournament A chilly afternoon at Mayville on Tuesday but a great competition that Frensham were very competitive in. In out group with host Mayville, Meon Cross, More House and Boundary Oak. All the games were 7v7 and so close games on small pitches. Chances would be difficult to create and so the taking these when they arrived would be essential. Lots of good performance from Harry C in midfield, Negu in Defence and Zak at centre forward to name a couple. After the group stages we qualified for the quarter finals and were up against Boundary Oak A. This was our best performance by far and dominated from the first minuet and create chance after chance, the ball would just not drop in. As a result, the game went to penalties and unfortunately the boys lost 3-1 on penalties to not progress to the semi-finals. Under 13s Football Mayville Tournament The boys were a real credit to the school throughout the afternoon at Mayville in freezing conditions. In every game they worked incredibly hard defensively and also created opportunities going forward. We lost our first two group games by one goal to nil but then won our last group game 1 - 0 from a great strike by Leo who was superb all afternoon. This meant we had to play the winner of the other group in the quarter final. They were significantly bigger than us but we stuck to it and managed to take the game to penalties. Jack and Leo scored their penalties and Johnny in goal saved both opposition penalties which saw us get to the semi final. The same scenario played out in the semi but this time we lost on penalties. It was an amazing afternoon. A special mention for Johnny in goal who was outstanding all afternoon. Under 11s Football v Duke of Kent The U10 and 11 mixed team play against two Duke of Kent teams in a mini tournament. In the first game there was fantastic defensive play by Oscar in goal particularly as this is not his normal position. Brilliant defence by Angad and Crofton and superb link play by Max in midfield. Upfront Albie and Betty found the going tough to find scoring opportunities however never gave up. When called upon Ben was awesome in goal, Cassia was strong in defence and Lylee was excellent in a dual role of defence and midfield with Frensham coming up short 3-0 to the Duke of Kent team. In the second match Frensham played brilliantly with two goals from Albie and one from Betty to win 3-1 against the second Duke of Kent team, all the players mentioned above were exceptional in helping to create these goals to win the second match. On the other pitch, the first 10-mins was very even, with both sides battling it out. DOK managed to score on a counterattack. In reaction, Frensham had some chances from some quick link up between Louis and Rudy but neither were able to put the ball in the net. Frensham were punished for small errors in defence which resulted in 4 more DOK goals. Well played both sides! LOST PROPERTY OUTSIDE SCHOOL IN THE LOST PROPERTY OFFICE... However, a certain amount of any SEN pupil’s relevant information will need to be provided to staff more widely in the context of providing the necessary care and education that the pupil requires. Staff, pupils and parents are reminded that the School is under duties imposed by law and statutory guidance (including Keeping Children Safe in Education) to record or report incidents and concerns that arise or are reported to it, in some cases regardless of whether they are proven, if they meet a certain threshold of seriousness in their nature or regularity. This may include file notes on personnel or safeguarding files, and in some cases referrals to relevant authorities such as the LADO or police. For further information about this, please view the School’s Safeguarding Policy. Finally, in accordance with Data Protection Law, some of the School’s processing activity is carried out on its behalf by third parties, such as IT systems, web developers or cloud storage providers. This is always subject to contractual assurances that personal data will be kept securely and only in accordance with the School’s specific directions. HOW LONG WE KEEP PERSONAL DATA The School will retain personal data securely and only in line with how long it is necessary to keep for a legitimate and lawful reason. Typically, the legal recommendation for how long to keep ordinary staff and pupil personnel files is up to 7 years following departure from the School. However, incident reports and safeguarding files will need to be kept much longer, in accordance with specific legal requirements. If you have any specific queries about how this policy is applied, or wish to request that personal data that you no longer believe to be relevant is considered for erasure, please contact the Bursar, whose contact details are above. However, please bear in mind that the School may have lawful and necessary reasons to hold on to some data. The School’s Retention of Records Guidelines gives details of the retention of different records; staff can access this on–line, others can request a copy from the Bursar. KEEPING IN TOUCH AND SUPPORTING THE SCHOOL The School will use the contact details of parents, alumni and other members of the School community to keep them updated about the activities of the School, or alumni and parent events of interest, including by sending updates and newsletters, by email and by post. Unless the relevant individual objects, the School may also: Share personal data about parents and/or alumni, as appropriate, with organisations set up to help establish and maintain relationships with the School community, such as the Old Frenshamian (OF) organisation and Friends of Frensham (FOF) ; Contact parents and/or alumni (including via the organisations above) by post and email in order to promote and raise funds for the School and, where appropriate, other worthy causes; Collect information from publicly available sources about parents’ and former pupils’ occupation and activities, for monitoring and marketing purposes; Should you wish to limit or object to any such use, or would like further information about them, please contact the Bursar in writing. You always have the right to withdraw consent, where given, or otherwise object to direct marketing or fundraising. However, the School may need nonetheless to retain some of your details (not least to ensure that no more communications are sent to that particular address, email or telephone number). YOUR RIGHTS Individuals have various rights under Data Protection Law to access and understand personal data about them held by the School, and in some cases ask for it to be erased or amended or for the School to stop processing it, but subject to certain exemptions and limitations. Any individual wishing to access or amend their personal data, or wishing it to be transferred to another person or organisation, or who has some other objection to how their personal data is used, should put their request in writing to the Bursar. The School will endeavour to respond to any such written requests as soon as is reasonably practicable and in any event within statutory time–limits, which is one month in the case of requests for access to information. The School will be better able to respond quickly to smaller, targeted requests for information. If the request is manifestly excessive or similar to previous requests, the School may ask you to reconsider or charge a proportionate fee, but only where Data Protection Law allows it. You should be aware that certain data is exempt from the right of access. This may include information which identifies other individuals, or information which is subject to legal professional privilege. The School is also not required to disclose any pupil examination scripts (though examine rs’ comments may fall to be disclosed), nor any confidential reference given by the School for the purposes of the education, training or employment of any individual. PUPIL REQUESTS Pupils can make subject access requests for their own personal data, provided that, in the reasonable opinion of the School, they have sufficient maturity to understand the request they are making (see section Whose Rights below). Indeed, while a person with parental responsibility will generally be entitled to make a subject access request on behalf of younger pupils, the information in question is always considered to be the child’s at law. A pupil of any age may ask a parent or other representative to make a subject access request on his/her behalf. Moreover (if of sufficient age) their consent or authority may need to be sought by the parent making such a request. Pupils at Frensham Heights aged 13 and above are generally assumed to have this level of maturity, although this will depend on both the child and the personal data requested, including any relevant circumstances at home. Slightly younger children may also sufficiently mature to have a say in this decision. All information requests from, or on behalf of, pupils – whether made under subject access or simply as an incidental request – will therefore be considered on a case by case basis. CONSENT Where the School is relying on consent as a means to process personal data, any person may withdraw this consent at any time (subject to similar age considerations as above). Please be aware however that the School may have another lawful reason to process the personal data in question even without your consent. That reason will usually have been asserted under this Privacy Notice, or may otherwise exist under some form of contract or agreement with the individual (e.g. an employment or parent contract, or because a purchase of goods, services or membership of an organisation such as OF or FOF has been requested). WHOSE RIGHTS The rights under Data Protection Law belong to the individual to whom the data relates. However, the School will often rely on parental consent to process personal data relating to pupils (if consent is required) unless, given the nature of the processing in question, and the pupil’s age and understanding, it is more appropriate to rely on the pupil’s consent. Parents should be aware that in such situations they may not be consulted, depending on the interests of the child, the parents’ rights at law or under their contract, and all the circumstances. In general, the School will assume that pupils’ consent is not required for ordinary disclosure of their personal data to their parents, e.g. for the purposes of keeping parents informed about the pupil’s activities, progress and behaviour, and in the interests of the pupil’s welfare, unless, in the School‘s opinion, there is a good reason to do otherwise. However, where a pupil seeks to raise concerns confidentially with a member of staff and expressly withholds their agreement to their personal data being disclosed to their parents, the School may be under an obligation to maintain confidentiality unless, in the School‘s opinion, there is a good reason to do otherwise; for example where the School believes disclosure will be in the best interests of the pupil or other pupils, or if required by law. Pupils are required to respect the personal data and privacy of others, and to comply with the School rules and the School‘s current and future IT policies, including its policies on Acceptable Use of IT and Use of IT Technology. DATA ACCURACY AND SECURITY The School will endeavour to ensure that all personal data held in relation to an individual is as up to date and accurate as possible. Individuals must please notify the Bursar of any significant changes to important information, such as contact details, held about them. An individual has the right to request that any out–of–date, irrelevant or inaccurate or information about them is erased or corrected (subject to certain exemptions and limitations under Data Protection Law): please see above for details of why the School may need to process your data, of who you may contact if you disagree. The School will take appropriate technical and organisational steps to ensure the security of personal data about individuals, including policies around use of technology and devices, and access to School systems. All staff and governors will be made aware of this policy and their duties under Data Protection Law and receive relevant training. THIS POLICY The School will update this Privacy Notice from time to time. Any substantial changes that affect your rights will be provided to you directly as far as is reasonably practicable. COOKIE POLICY What Are Cookies As is common practice with almost all professional websites this site uses cookies, which are tiny files that are downloaded to your computer, to improve your experience. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 27th May, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK CLICK FOR RICK'S MESSAGE A MESSAGE FROM NICK OT Dear Parents, I'm writing to you from St David’s in Wales on the Year 6 trip with adventure company TYF. This trip has been a totally fantastic adventure for the children and has given them access to so many unique, fun and challenging experiences. It has also been an endless chance for personal development, self-challenge, teamwork and friendship building for all of the children. These are all skills that are key for our Frensham children and areas we will be focusing on in the Junior School as we move forward across this term and into 2023. I’d like to thank Honesty, Kelly and the Junior School staff for managing things while we have been away and believe the strength of knowledge, skills and expertise across the school has held us in very strong place and gives us the opportunity as a school to be adventurous in the experiences we offer as a Junior School. I’d also like to say a thank you to all of you for coming to the first showcase event of the Summer Term, which feedback suggests was a great success. We hope that it gave you the chance as parents to re-engage with your children’s learning space and to see many of the inspiring outcomes your children are creating and producing. The next showcase event will be the End of Year Celebration Assembly on 7th July in the Theatre (after morning drop off) and don’t forget Founders' Day on Saturday 2nd July. If you have never been to Founders' Day before then I’d describe it as a festival-style celebration of Frensham where we get everyone together as a whole school to celebrate this Spirit of Togetherness. Next week gives everyone a circuit breaker of time to recharge and get ready for a jam-packed 5 weeks of learning, action and further unique events and trips. You may also be celebrating the Jubilee in some capacity, so please do have fun and enjoy your week. Nursery to Year 5 finished their week with a special assembly led by Kelly today with a Jubilee focus. Prior to this they received a royal invite to the assembly and there was even a special Jubilee themed snack. Great times! Take care, have fun and see you soon. We called on some of our in-house expertise to deliver these and it was good to see the students engage with the different topics and ask some brilliant questions to help them understand more. Carys spoke to them first about how to develop a healthy lifestyle encouraging them to eat healthily, drink plenty of water and get enough sleep. While some of the students wanted to argue for later bedtimes and lie-ins they all accepted that her knowledge and expertise were to be respected even if they did not like some of the facts! They then looked at ways to manage stress and had a first aid workshop from Linn. Finally, we were really grateful to welcome OF Ollie Harding back to talk to the students with his Mum, Louise, about online security and how to stay safe online. Louise’s expertise was invaluable, and Ollie was able to connect with the students really well and enjoyed being back on the Frensham stage. Thank you to Louise, Ollie, Carys, Linn K and all the staff who helped with this morning. While it was a shame this had to be postponed due to our outside speaker having to pull out at the last minute, we have managed to book a replacement who will talk to the students during the afternoon of June 13th and revisit the topic of Healthy Relationships with them. We look forward to that. YEAR 7 ECODAYS On Friday 20th May, Year 7 enjoyed a day reconnecting with nature, as a light start (post exams) to our Eco Days. They started in our local woodland walking with their tutors, listening to the rain fall on the trees and playing games. A drying off session in the theatre for a talk and viewing of Our Planet followed. The groups went to Farnham Park to be taken on a tour by Nick Macfarlane, the Park Ranger, who gave us a fascinating insight into the ecology, management and history of the park. We were all surprised to hear that a Roman aqueduct once ran through the park and had fun pulling Himalayan balsam (an invasive species) and studying the meandering stream as we walked through it. Back at school, groups also engaged in some fun games, playing table tennis and swimming pool volleyball, which was a big hit! The second Eco Day for Year 7 will take place on the school site on Wednesday 29th June. Over the next half term, Geography and Science lessons will have an Eco slant as we examine habitats, conservation, and issues of waste. 1/10 "I loved venturing through the rivers – it felt like we were in a jungle." "I liked trying to find the fairies." "I loved the swimming volleyball – it was the best to play with all my friends, not just the boarders Walking in a field with cows was fun." "I enjoyed jumping across the banks of the river." "It was really interesting to see how the pebbles were shaped by the stream." DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY EXTRACURRICULAR PROJECT As part of an extra curricular club I wanted to extend my knowledge of jewellery making, something that interests me and maybe an area of interest for the future. The first step in making this ring was to sketch out some designs and then use the design software 2D design V3 so that, based on the initial sketches, a mould could be designed and cut with the laser cutter. Once the mould was cut from 9mm laser MDF, the next step was to melt down the metal (pewter) to pour into the mould. After it had hardened and cooled, the only remaining task was to file the edges to achieve a wavy pattern and polish the ring using different grades of emery cloth. I’m very happy with the final outcome and have developed new skills and processes. Written by Carla – Year 12 student 1/2 YEAR 4 DT Year 4 have been looking at reusing and recycling materials this half term for DT. Our children arrived to start the day dressed in glorious costumes and clothes fit for royalty!!! Our grown ups also took the opportunity to embrace their inner Monarch. After our assembly in the Ballroom, the children gathered out on the front lawn and in the style of many street parties of the past sat in two long lines to have their morning snack. The snack this morning was also fit for royalty, the most amazing Jubilee cup-cakes provided by our catering team, not a crumb was left over!!! It was a wonderful sight to see, all our pupils from nursery to year 5 enjoying the morning spring sun. The Frensham ‘Spirit of Togetherness’ was definitely in full force today. Two of our students had their own stall selling items that they had made or gathered too. There was a talk about Sustainability at Frensham Heights where we led with a message about fabric and how once it is made it can become a number of things ongoing and almost have at least nine lives, the same as a cat! Thanks go out to Debbie Hunt for the large amount of items she personally made from recycled fabrics for us. 1/4 WEDNESDAY AFTERNOONS Our outreach has changed this half term and is focussed on teenagers from Ukraine who have not been given a school place. A growing group of Ukrainian visitors between the ages of 12 and 18 are meeting with a few of our 6th formers, Lynn G and Katya(Yr 7 parent) to socialise, follow Happy Space’s well being programme and take part in activities. Drama, cooking, an art tour and a walk have all been enjoyed so far. We share a lot of laughter when we meet. 1/6 CLIMBING ECA On Wednesday afternoons, Linn K takes a group of Yr 7 - 13 students to Surrey Sports Park for some bouldering and rope climbing. 1/29 OUTREACH YRS 7 & 8 Yesterday, we visited Gostrey Brightwell to begin decorating their hall by making ROYAL SCARECROWS. It was a tremendous amount of fun, we all learnt the National Anthem again and here were our scarecrows. 1/4 SPORTS REPORT THIS WEEK'S SPORTS REPORT Under 15s Rounders Vs Ditcham Park School We played our first rounders fixtures of the season away at Ditcham this week, in-between some very heavy rain! The U14 team were dominant from the start and batted particularly well throughout. To mention some, stand out performances - Lulu bowled accurately and consistently, Lexie batted strongly and there was some confident fielding by Willow and Grace on the bases. Read More Under 13s Girls Cricket Vs Alton Under 13s Cricket Vs The Royal The U13s played cricket against The Royal on Thursday. We won the toss and elected to field first. We showed real improvement in our bowling and fielding restricting the opposition to 76-8. Special mention for Zac and Jack who both claimed 2 wickets each. We then chased the runs really well with excellent innings from both Harry B and Harry C. It is great to see how much they have all improved this half term. Well done, a great win! OUR SCHOOL For our students from Nursery through Sixth Form, our aim is to provide a really good robust academic environment alongside a much richer experience as well. Our students go on to be doctors, dancers and engineers. They go on to follow a whole range of careers with a personal self-belief that helps them succeed. But more importantly they learn the skills, the future skills, to build a life not just a living. Our School QUICK LINKS EYFS JUNIOR MIDDLE SENIOR SIXTH FORM EYFS EYFS Nursery and Reception Our Nursery and Reception children spend most of their day learning through a method called Planning in the Moment. Our quick-thinking Early Years teachers mould the day’s learning around whatever interests the children may bring in with them. The day after Bonfire Night will probably bring activities on light and dark (a quick trip to the photography darkroom), hot and cold, shadows, colour, noises, surely with a campfire down at the forest school to top it all off. The Reception teachers will filter Mathematics, Phonics and English through short games and activities. It’s the kind of education that keeps the children’s spirits alive and keen to learn more while giving them crucial skills for learning. It teaches them that their opinions and interests are important, that their voices, no matter how little, will be heard and most importantly, that school is a lot of fun. FIND OUT MORE JUNIOR JUNIOR SCHOOL Years 1 to 6 At Frensham, we are not prepping for anything. From the day each child joins they are each starting off on their own educational journey – it’s the real thing, not a run up. We welcome them with the full understanding and expectation that they each have different interests, personalities and strengths and different paths to follow. This is a wonderful release for the children and the teachers. They can fully embrace the unique combination of characters within a class and dive together into their learning adventure without limiting themselves to ticking boxes or ranking and rating each achievement. We know genuine learning happens when you’re happy, unhindered by external pressures, and that is our true focus here, for every child. Our Junior School children have active, varied days. We tend to stick to a timetable, but we also have the freedom and flexibility to break from the norm if it boosts curiosity, creativity and a passion for learning. FIND OUT MORE MIDDLE SCHOOL Years 7 and 8 Years 7 to 8 are important and exciting years for teaching and learning at Frensham. With exams not quite on the horizon, we can still offer a purposefully broad curriculum allowing students to find the subjects which really interest them. Teaching practices are innovative and progressive allowing for student-led initiative and flexibility. With small class sizes, teachers can really offer bespoke teaching always considering the unique group of students in front of them. Less tied to lesson plans, if something isn’t working, they can discuss and work with the students to find a better way to get everyone engaged and participating. FIND OUT MORE MIDDLE SENIOR SENIOR SCHOOL Years 9 to 11 Years 9 to 11 are formative years for all students not only academically, but emotionally and socially. Like most mainstream schools, we follow the GCSE curriculum and assessment processes. Our teaching and learning during these years is closely curriculum-led, but we do our best to continuously support our students’ personal passions and interests. Rather than focusing only on the exam results, our aim is to give our students the knowledge and the thinking skills - creativity, problem solving, flexibility, resilience - to take on whatever may turn up on the exams, but also in life beyond. Emotionally and socially, these can be tricky years for all teenagers to navigate and this is where the strong relationships and outstanding pastoral care at Frensham can really give them the chance to enjoy what can be very stressful years. In Year 9, all students take part in a trip to the Peak District. It is unique and beneficial in so many ways. It is technology-free. It is far enough from home for a true independence and self-confidence to grow within each child. They step outside their comfort zone, leave teenage stresses behind and are able to really appreciate the beauty of their environment and the relationships they have with friends and teachers. FIND OUT MORE SIXTH FORM Years 12 to 13 SIXTH FIND OUT MORE Frensham Sixth Form is a really unique place. It offers the freedom and responsibility of a Sixth Form setting with the vibrancy and opportunities of a whole school community. These are the years when students are on the brink of adulthood, readying for their first big step into independence, whatever that might be. A-Levels mean that during these years our teaching and learning is more curriculum-led, but our classes are very small and teachers are able to offer bespoke teaching to the class in front of them, continuously engaging with their students’ personal passions and interests. Rather than focusing purely on exam results, our aim is to give our students the knowledge and the thinking skills - creativity, problem solving, flexibility, resilience - to take on whatever may turn up on the exams, but also in life beyond. The strong relationships and outstanding pastoral care at Frensham can really give students the confidence to be themselves, take things in stride and go beyond their own expectations.

  • 2021 November Week 3 News

THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 19th November, 2021 CLICK TO NAVIGATE RICK'S MESSAGE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT MENUS NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK A MESSAGE FROM KATHERINE Spotlight on the Junior School This week we have had a focus on Anti-bullying week which as we know is not just a week but is something we believe should be a focus everyday. In their Emerging Horizons lessons with Nick this week they have been learning about the four main types of Bullying (Physical, Verbal, Social and Cyber). They have explored what these can look like and empowered them to stand up and know who to go to for support to make it stop. It was lovely to have an assembly this week to round up the week with all our children from Reception to Year 6. We even had the treat of lovely performance from a group of Year 5 & 6 students from the Drama ECA who have scripted their own piece called ‘The Golden Crayon’. Thank you for cheering up our day! The theme this year was ‘one kind word' and our children came up with some absolute crackers to share with others to uplift each other and show their strengths. Perseverance, Spirit, Happiness and Independence. What word would you use as an inspirational kind word? Have a lovely weekend, Katherine RICK KATHERINE Dear Parents I have spent time this week thinking about our school values and the importance of being a values-led organisation. I enjoyed chatting to one of our parents a week ago about his experiences in another organisation of resetting values and then embedding them across everything they do, and this is the journey we are now on. Two examples of this in action: with new appointments of staff pending, we are using the values to underpin our recruitment process, and we have used the values to help draft a Junior School approach to behaviour inside and outside the classroom. I am also working with the Senior School student council on how they would like to use the new values to underpin the student experience in the school. As you will expect, with the end of term not far away, we have a number of community events coming up that we are excited to be running. We will be sending out separate communications about these events and I look forward to seeing many of you on site in due course. Have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes Rick NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES Anti-Bullying Week 2021 It’s been a highly impactful week at Frensham in promoting the Anti-Bully theme across the Whole School. From Early Years all the way through to our Sixth Form, all children will have been a part of important discussion, assemblies, talks and activities that have strongly reenforced our response to any of the four major types of bullying. The work does not stop here though! The children have been challenged to continue to support and promote this message of ‘Anti-Bullying’ across all of the spaces they inhabitant, whether that be on or off-line. If you didn’t manage to see the ‘Anti-Bullying’ Sway that went out last week which shared lots of key information then please do engage with it through this link: Anti-Bullying Sway In there, there is also a very supportive Parent Pack that has loads of guidance for you as parents / carers. We have tried to bring this to the stage at a minimal cost to the environment asking the children to make their costumes from re-using, recycling or buying items from charity shops. The set has been designed by Dolly Moon-Kilner in Year 8 and is being built by Shaun and Nicky from our very own Aldridge Theatre using as few new items as possible. Please look out for wood reclaimed from the outdoor theatre and old pieces of set that have been altered to suit this play. All in all - a production with everyone sharing ideas and thinking of the planet whilst enjoying being together rehearsing and performing. We learnt about all the different types of teeth and their functions. The children enjoyed a Science lesson in the science labs looking at different real life animal skeletons and doing some observational drawing. They tried to work out if the animal was a carnivore, herbivore and omnivore by seeing what different types of teeth it had. Alison Bundy student casino night students in formal wear student casino night student casino night 1/22 TRANS AWARENESS WEEK This week, as part of Anti-Bullying Week, we have also been celebrating national Trans Awareness Week. Students have been learning about what being trans means, pronouns, and how to ensure that they are being kind & respectful towards others. We have also celebrated trans role models in subject areas, from Erica Rutherford in Art to Shea Diamond in Music, as well as Verity Smith in PE and Pierre Davis in Technology. Students have also reflected on how learning about the trans experience helps to express our Frensham values, of celebrating authenticity & individuality, as well as building a kind community based on respect & understanding. One of our current Y13 students, Gabe, has kindly offered the following words on why celebrating Trans Awareness Week at Frensham is so important: “Since the beginning of the LGBT rights movement, transgender women of colour have led the way despite facing extreme levels of hatred and violence from both those outside the community and within it. Nowadays those women are so often cast aside and replaced in retellings and history with more socially acceptable LGBT people- lost in time with so few even knowing their names. The quote “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” seems especially applicable here as in recent years we have seen a sharp increase in transphobia in all facets of society. For example, the BBC, a news source that has long claimed to be impartial, recently platformed and listened to a group that call for the extermination of transgender people leading to them dropping out of Stonewall’s diversity scheme. Similarly, in 2018, London pride was allowed by officials to be headed up by a group made up mainly of Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists- those who believe that transgender people are a corrupting and threatening force. In fact, transgender people are far more likely to become victims of abuse and violence than perpetrators with, according to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, 2021 being one of the deadliest years for transgender people since they began recording not to mention the detrimentally high suicide rates amongst transgender people of all ages (more than ¼ having attempted and 9/10 having seriously contemplated). Transgender Awareness Week takes place between the 13th and 19th of November and culminates in Transgender Day of Remembrance, its is a time to learn about the history and struggles of transgender people as well as remember those we have lost. It is important to recognise this in school because the adults of tomorrow are created here, and the future will call for a wider acceptance and recognition of transgender issues; we aren’t something that will go away, particularly as antagonised as we are.” Click the image to see the presentation WORLD PHILOSOPHY DAY The PRE department celebrated World Philosophy Day on Thursday by having a joint debate with students from King Edward’s School, Bath. Students from Y10 and above came together to discuss whether the British monarchy should die with the Queen, with people reflecting on the financial, as well as the cultural, implications. Despite a few technical issues with the microphone and feedback (the perils of 21st century education!), students were really engaged and enjoyed having the chance to share their thoughts with, and hear from, a broader range of voices. Well done to all those who participated – staff at King Edward’s commented on how fantastic the students were and how lovely Frensham is. We’re hoping to be able to make these events a more regular occurrence so keep your eyes peeled for more opportunities in future… YEAR 12 GEOGRAPHY TRIP On Friday the Year 12 Geographers braved some inclement weather and a long coach ride, to complete Coasts Fieldwork at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. The trip aimed to expose the Year 12s to a selection of fieldwork techniques, and to partially prepare them for their NEAs, which they start at the end of Y12. It was a grey day in the morning, but we were lucky to arrive at Lulworth with blue skies and a little bit of sunshine. The Geographers were guided down to Lulworth Cove, stopping to take note of the unique geology and geomorphology along the way. They collected data samples from two different beach sites, one in Lulworth Cove and the other at Durdle Door. However, it was at Durdle Door that the weather turned, and we got soaked returning up the hill to the minibus. Fortunately, we had already recorded the data we came for, and we hopped on the minibus to return to school. Wet, but content in a job well done. • HEALTH CARE | Frensham Heights

HEALTH CARE HEALTH CENTRE Our Health Centre sits inside Main House. It is staffed by qualified nurses every school day during term time, with an out of hours on-call service Sunday – Friday. Students can visit the Health Centre during surgery times and should ask their teacher’s permission if this is during lesson time. Parents can contact the Health Centre on healthcentre@frensham.org How big are your classes? We have one class per year group from Nursery up to Year 3 with small numbers to ensure individual attention. This splits into two classes per year group in Years 4, 5 and 6 with up to 18 per class. In Years 7 and 8, there are usually three tutor groups per year with 16 or 18 students in each. In Year 9, there are four tutor groups. The GCSE and A Level class sizes vary depending on the popularity of student subject choices. What clothes can students wear? We don’t have a uniform, we just ask our students to dress for purpose. Students are free to express their individuality through their clothes as long as it doesn’t interfere with their school day or cause any distraction or offence. Please also ensure that your child has sensible footwear, including waterproof or walking boots and everyday shoes. Can students have bicycles on site? Yes, from Year 7 – please make sure it is insured and in good working order with a strong lock. All students who have a bicycle at school are asked to sign a Bike Contract, which states the basic expectations on safe and considerate use of bicycles in and around school. Apart from those in the Sixth Form, all students need to wear a bicycle helmet. Can students bring medication to school? All medications, including over-the-counter medications, must be handed to the Health Centre on arrival for safe keeping. Do students need a school bag and stationery? Yes, please make sure the bag is suitable for students to carry their books around our vast site. Please also bring a pencil case, pencils, pens, erasers, colouring pencils, etc. It's a good idea to name all personal items. What proportion of students board? We offer boarding from Year 7 upwards - roughly 25% of the students board either as full, weekly or flexi 3 day boarders. Where we have space, students are welcome for an 'occasional night' boarding as well. This should be booked with the boarding house. During the school week there is no differentiation between day and boarding students. How do you handle discipline? Our disciplinary measures are based on mutual respect and self-discipline. We use discussion rather than detention and set targets for changes in behaviour. Depending on the nature of the situation, discussions will occur between the student/s and their teacher or with the Head of School, Deputy Head or Head and if the situation escalates disciplinary sanctions may be used. Aggressive language, shouting and detentions are not used by any staff at Frensham. Can my child take part in competitive sports? We have over 450 sporting fixtures each year for students who love competitive games. If you want your children to love sport, love going to matches and know how to win or lose well, then that’s what they’ll get here. As well as the main sports, we also offer mountain biking, high ropes, surfing trips, hill walking, rock climbing. At the end of the day, our goal is for students to be fit and healthy.

THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 29th April, 2022 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM RICK CLICK FOR RICK'S MESSAGE A MESSAGE FROM NICK OT Dear Parents, I’m not sure where to begin to be honest! From the Queen visiting Year 1 to Year 4 conducting their own powerful Storm vocabulary performance - from Year 6 having an overnight camp-out to Year 5 learning Ukrainian and creating messages of support - to Year 3 getting creative and using materials to explore fractions. Not to mention the Early Years using claw hammers and Year 2 beginning their wander through their topic of Rainforests - it has simply been a fantastic first week back at school and one that offers an exciting marker for the summer term ahead. I hope the feedback coming home has been equally positive and that you have had a good week too. When the sun shines at Frensham there is always that extra spark in the air and we have certainly seen that this week within all classes. It has been great to see so many classes taking their learning outside and lovely examples of this have been sketching with Hannah on Main Lawn, Science with Esme out in the 4-6 playground, a whole bevvy of JS ECA’s in full-flow and a JS assembly out in front of Main House and its unbelievable view. We have also been spending the week launching our focus on the ‘Spirit of Togetherness’ with the children and this was further represented in a fun-fuelled whole Junior School Assembly in the theatre this morning. Please do keep checking in with your child’s class SeeSaw blog for further updates and pictures and keep an eye out for the new Friday Snapshot email. The Friday Snapshot will talk you through the headlines of your child’s learning experiences of the week gone, let you know what is coming in the week ahead and will also share any other key information that should be on your radar. Next week I intend to share the key dates for the summer term with you and will also endeavour to showcase any other wonderful learning moments in the Junior School that I come across. Until then, the Junior School Staff and I wish you a fab bank holiday weekend and we will see you on Tuesday for the next week of learning, experience and adventure! Take care and enjoy your time. Nick O-T NOTICES SCHOOL MESSAGES BOOKMARK BOX FOR UKRAINE The charity Bookmark Reading (whose usual purpose is to volunteer in primary schools to assist children in the UK with reading support) have recently committed to raising £1m to support Ukrainian children who are arriving in the UK. They want to help them start their new chapter in the UK feeling secure, welcome, and inspired. They have therefore created the Bookmark Box for Ukraine, working with literacy experts to carefully curate a box filled with literacy resources and tools to help these children build their familiarity with the English language. In the boxes, they are including high-quality, bilingual books, magazines, activities, school packs and tablets pre-loaded with educational and language apps and eBooks in English and Ukrainian. RSVP HERE THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM THIS WEEK ELEVATE EDUCATION SEMINAR Elevate Education came into school to run a Year 9 study skills session on Time Management this week - perfect timing, as they work towards their Year 9 assessments. The session shared ideas on how to prioritise time, how to produce a weekly planner, how to create a study group, and how to avoid procrastination. This session will be followed up by another session called Study Sensai at the start of Year 10. The students took away with them a handout with ideas on how to study more efficiently. I hope this was useful and the students took something away from the session. Information which students may find useful can be found on their website. https://uk.elevateeducation.com/home They also run a number of useful parent seminars. Details of these will be emailed home as and when they occur. YRS 11 & 13 FUN Years 11 and 13 took part in some fun activities this week before heading off for study leave. 1/18 1/20 GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO ICELAND Our Geography expedition to Southern Iceland over the Easter Holidays was a truly enriching experience, both socially and educationally. The activities and landscape sparked curiosity and creativity in our students well beyond the remit of Geography. As Linn’s film shows we packed in a fantastic variety of experiences over our 3 night/4 day stay. Our group of 29 students and 4 staff, started our adventure walking through lava caves, immersing ourselves in the closest conditions to complete darkness that many of us will have experienced. We had a fascinating visit to a geothermal power station to help us understand how the Icelandic population power and heat their homes. This also gave us a better insight into why our showers smelt of eggs! Equipped with crampons and ice picks we trekked across part of the Solheimajokull Glacier and enjoyed the spray of one of Iceland’s many beautiful waterfalls by walking all the way behind it. It wasn’t all action however, in keeping with Icelandic tradition we relaxed in thermally heated water in both hot tubs and an open-air pool. We visited the mid-Atlantic ridge to see the division of the North American and European plates, alongside Thingvellir, Iceland’s first parliament. Great Geysir (a spouting hot spring), bubbling volcanic pools, Gulfoss (largest waterfall in Europe), a trip to a dairy farm serving delicious ice cream and walk to the Hard Rock Café along the sea front in Reykjavík via a film set completed our final day. Alas, we never quite got to see a full display of the Northern Lights, although some greening of the sky was reported. However, new friendships were forged and minds and bodies stretched by new experiences. The students were a credit to the school, they were polite, genuinely great company and good humoured, even at 4am on our day of departure! Their engagement and awe in the landscape inspired us all to look at it with new eyes. Our display showing the pictures of our wonderful adventure will be coming to the Geography department soon. Thanks to Will Paskell, Dan Pullen, Linn Kathenes-McGuigan and Karen McBride, Accounts and Support Staff for their help in running the trip. Student comments below:- ‘Best four days ever’ ‘I built a strong connection with people on the trip’ ‘It was mentally healing to be in a new and different place’ ‘So good to get to know people in different years’ ‘Each destination was equally as brilliant, and the bus journeys were fun’ ‘Looking for the Northern lights from hot tubs was amazing’ ‘It was all fab-tastic!’ COSTUME OF SPORT Building on the success of the Regency Morning Talk delivered by Dr Kim Simpson and Clio O’Sullivan as part of our World Book celebrations back in March, the links between Chawton House and Frensham Heights continue! Zoë and Sam from the English Department supported the official opening of the latest exhibition A Costume of Sport which was Clio’s first curation. We look forward to working alongside Chawton House to develop student enrichment opportunities and community collaboration projects in the future. 1/2 WELCOMING UKRANIAN FAMILIES We welcomed 15 local Ukranian families to meet, socialise and select items from the pop up shop of donated toys and clothes. This was captured on BBC South Today last night. It was lovely to meet the families that have travelled so far under such uncertain conditions for the last few weeks. Huge thanks to helping students; Chloe, Olivia, Theo and Kitty and teachers too. 1/2 A ROYAL VISIT Our Year 1 students were treated to a royal visit this week when the Queen came to tea to celebrate her upcoming Jubilee. They all behaved impeccable using their best bows and curtsies and asked many questions about her life and responsibilities. Love it!Beautiful! So cute! 1/2 YEAR 9 ART Just to get back to ourselves after the break some of our Year 9 students lost themselves in pastel creations of the moon. 1/3 SAILING INTO THE LONG WEEKEND Nine sailors from years 5 and 6 took part in the first Sailing Club session of the summer term and we'd love to let you know just how great they were! With a mixture of some who have sailed a little, one who has sailed a lot and the majority who have never sailed at all, our time on the water was a great success. The sailors covered the basics; parts of the boat and what they do, how to control our speed, steer and turn our boat around. A special mention for Alexander who mastered falling out of his boat and to Ava for being so helpful to her friends who were learning the ropes! It was great to see everyone out in their boats and I looked forward to seeing them all progress over the coming weeks. SILVER DUKE OF EDINBURGH PRACTICE EXPEDITION Last weekend, a team of 15 students from Frensham Heights embarked on their Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) Practice Expedition in the New Forest. During this expedition, the students showcased impressive navigation skills, demonstrated excellent campcraft, and made sound decisions to ensure a safe and successful journey. The experience was a testament to their preparedness and commitment to the DofE program. The team is now eagerly anticipating their qualifying expedition, scheduled for March 22nd to 24th where they will have the opportunity to further hone their outdoor skills and demonstrate their readiness for completing their Silver DofE Qualifying. The Benefits of Embarking on a Duke of Edinburgh's Award Expedition at Bronze, Silver & Gold The Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) program is a renowned and prestigious personal development initiative that empowers young individuals to challenge themselves and explore their potential. One of the most exciting and memorable components of the program is the expedition phase. This outdoor adventure not only offers participants a chance to explore the great outdoors but also provides numerous valuable benefits such as: Developing Resilience One of the foremost benefits of undertaking an expedition is the development of resilience. Participants are required to navigate challenging terrains, often in adverse weather conditions, and carry all their supplies. This experience teaches them to persevere through difficulties, develop problem-solving skills, and cultivate a strong sense of determination. Enhancing Teamwork Teamwork is a crucial aspect of their expedition. Participants work together with their teammates to plan routes, set up camps, and ensure the safety and well-being of the entire group. This fosters communication, cooperation, and collaboration skills, which are essential in both personal and professional life. Building Self-Confidence Completing a Silver DofE expedition is a significant achievement. Participants must rely on their own abilities and judgment to successfully navigate the journey. This self-reliance boosts their self-confidence and self-esteem, making them more resilient in the face of future challenges. Connecting with Nature The expedition takes participants out of their comfort zones and into the heart of nature. It allows them to disconnect from the digital world and connect with the natural environment. This not only offers a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life but also fosters a greater appreciation for the beauty and importance of the natural world. Discovering Leadership Skills During the expedition, participants take turns leading their group. This experience helps them discover and develop leadership qualities, such as decision-making, communication, and problem-solving, which are valuable skills in various aspects of life. Strengthening Physical and Mental Health The physical demands of the Silver DofE expedition contribute to improved physical fitness. The mental challenges, on the other hand, sharpen participants' focus and mental resilience. This holistic approach to well-being promotes a healthier lifestyle. A Valuable Addition to CV’s and College Applications Completing the Silver DofE expedition is a noteworthy achievement that can enhance a participant's resume or college application. It demonstrates qualities such as commitment, leadership, and a willingness to step outside one's comfort zone, which are highly regarded by educational institutions and employers. Conclusion The Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition is a transformative experience that offers a multitude of benefits to young individuals. It helps them develop crucial life skills, including resilience, teamwork, and self-confidence, while also fostering a deeper connection with nature and a broader cultural perspective. Ultimately, the Silver DofE expedition is not just an outdoor adventure; it is a journey of personal growth and self-discovery that can shape the future of its participants in profound ways. Flic also talked to them about strategies they can use to boost their wellbeing and manage difficulty. The children seemed to really enjoy the talks and workshops and we hope they will take some of this advice with them as and when they may need it in the future. 1/8 SPORTS REPORT SPORTS REPORT CELEBRATING SUCCESS Congratulations to Felix in Yr10 who has been selected by the Great Britain cycling team to become a National Gravity Academy Rider for 2024. This is a phenomenal achievement and is one of only four places available nationally. This will as part of the MTB Downhill Specific programme. “Felix has been identified as a hardworking, skillful bike racer who has the potential to develop into a successful world class athlete in the future. “ A fantastic opportunity for Felix and a bright future ahead. Well done! U14 NETBALL VS ALTON This was a competitive game played at home. With many of the team unable to play after school, it meant we had to be versatile in our positioning. The girls worked hard and fought for the ball. Alton dominated from the start but Frensham battled through every quarter to win the ball back. The final score was 18-12 to Alton, players of the match were Anna for her accurate shooting and Cydney for her flying intercepts. Cydney joined the school last term and has been a welcome addition to the squad. She always works hard and contests for every ball. A great performance and one to be proud of. This squad has a bright future ahead. U13 NETBAL L VS THE ROYAL The blue team took a while to settle against The Royal away, we dropped a lot of balls and used too many overheads against a tall Royal defence. After a few positional changes and a reset, the girls started to find their groove. They started to drive forward for the ball, using the width of the court and focus on their own game. We took the lead by the end of the second quarter and then the goals kept coming. In the final quarter we played versatility with Maria (GK) as C, shooters in defence and defence in the goal circle. They smashed the last quarter despite playing out of position with a final score of 20-3. It was a proud coaching moment for me! Players of the match were Myla in the centre and Marnie in defence. The Red team also came along for some court time. It was only a short game so the girls did not have the time they needed to settle into the game. They struggled to open up opportunities despite moving the ball well from end to end. Unfortunately, the tall Royal defence were too quick and turned over the ball before we could get it in the net. It was 0-0 at the end of the first quarter but the Royal ran away with it in the second and scored 4. A good outing for the newly formed team with plenty of talent and potential to work on. Players of the match were Lily H in the centre who has made massive progress as a centre court player, and Ava who worked hard in defence and read the game well, picking up loose balls and putting pressure on the Royal attack. A well deserved choice. Great work girls, keep going, lots to work on in preparation for our next game. 1/2 U15 B FOOTBALL VS ST EDMUNDS 1/2 U10 FOOTBALL VS ST EDMUNDS A fantastic first win of the season for the under 10s. An energised team after a couple of difficult games was great to see. The boys started well and were peppering the oppositions’ goal early on, unfortunately the St Edmunds goalkeeper was in sensational form and made several great saves from Clark, Remy and Crofton. On the occasions we did beat the GK the woodwork stopped us on at least three occasions in the opening ten minutes. The team smelt an opportunity and continued to push, some great passing and linking play ensured chances continued to be generated. The goal finally came through Clark who certainly deserved this with his fine dribbling skills throughout. Sound performances by Ethan who was strong in his tackles, Oscar with a goal and great passing, Mack in goal saving a penalty and many more positive to take from this game. A final score of 3-1 to Frensham was certainly well deserved! U15 FOOTBALL VS DUNNATOR (ISFA CUP ROUND 1) Despite the final score in this game, it did represent how well the girls performed in this very tough opening game. It finished 9-1 with 5 late goals as the girls began to tire. The start was ferocious, and the team soaked up some early pressure from some experienced female players. A through ball from Holly in midfield found Jamie on the left and she was strong to protect the ball from a tackle and fired the ball into the top corner for Frensham to take the lead. It was a difficult game but some highlights included the work rate of everybody on the team, Dunnator needed to earn every one of their opportunities because there was always a Frensham player closing down. Jemima and Holly in midfield were strong, Abbie and Katherine defended superbly well and Sophie in goal made some unbelievable saves. So many positive for us to take forward when we start our football season next season. 1/1 U15 FOOTBALL VS DUNNATOR (ISFA CUP ROUND 1) The U9 football team made it two wins from two in dramatic fashion yesterday against Alton. The game was end to end and brilliant to watch. The team are learning fast and understanding the importance of space and passing the football forwards to create chances and showing some brilliant finishing. In defence the marking is improving and some brilliant tackling has been shown. There was a flurry of goals with Lex scoring the opening goals. Alton fought back and we found ourselves 4-4 with a minute left. Up stepped Aubrey with a brilliant long range free kick which sailed into the goal and Frensham won 5-4. 1/1 U13 FOOTBALL VS ST EDMUNDS & BOUNDARY OAK The U13B team played their opening games of the season yesterday with a triangular fixture against Boundary Oak and St Ed’s. Considering this was the first time they have played as a team they put in a great performance and tried to play football the right way with lots of energy. In both games Frensham won 1-0 with some tidy finishing from Freddy in the first game and a late dramatic winner by Edward in the second game. We look forward to welcoming the Royal next week. U15 FOOTBALL VS ST EDMUNDS The U15 football team were unstoppable this week winning comfortably on Tuesday to St Ed’s. The midfield combo of Adnan, Elliot and Harry C worked brilliantly together to get the ball down on the floor and play between the lines. Leo ran the defence and they dealt well with any St Ed’s pressure and Jack showed some great finishing using the space well out wide. Adnan and Jack both picked up hattricks. They will face a tough test in the ISFA trophy next week against Dunottar. U13 FOOTBALL VS ST EDMUNDS We played really well and dominated the game against a well organised St Eds team. Our passing throughout the game was on the floor and quick which meant we opened them up on numerous occasions, however we struggled to put the ball into the back of the net. We then conceded with St Eds only attack which was hugely frustrating. The boys showed excellent determination and got back into the game and scored two well worked goals and ended up winning 2-1. U13 FOOTBALL VS BOUNDARY OAK We played our second game of the afternoon against a physically strong side who used their power and pace well. This didn’t phase us and we continued to play our passing football and opened them up several times scoring two great team goals finished off by Richie and Otto. We then conceded a headed goal from a corner which we were unable to stop due to the size of our opponents. Boundary Oak then scored a good second goal and although both teams had some chances neither could convert, and it stayed 2-2 which was probably a fair result. U11-9 SWIM GALA VS DUNHURST A great event for our students in Years 4 to 6 to attend so early in the year. We witnessed some great swimming which was made even more impressive by having to swim either 20m or 40m depending on age! We were up against some tough competition, but we still came away with some great results and some smiley faces after a great swim! For the U10s, Isabel came 1st in the 40m backstroke and also came 2nd in the 40m freestyle. For the U11s, in the 40m backstroke Ayla Sandlin came 2nd and Edith came 3rd, Louis came 2nd in the boys 40m freestyle and in the girls 40m freestyle race Ava placed 1st and Edith placed 3rd. A great competition in the relays across all year groups with a close competition through to the end. Well done to all who swam! U18 NETBALL VS ALTON It was a tough match at home today for our U16 netball squad against a very skilled and drilled U18 Alton side. Our girls worked hard though and did not allow the strong Alton defence to disrupt their flow. They moved the ball well smoothly up the court and fought hard to won it back when it was overturned by the fast pace of the Alton side. The girls did not give up though and fought for every goal until the final whistle. A special mention to Willow for her accurate shooting and great movement in the circle, and to Lulu who was outstanding at centre and goal attack. Some excellent movement, fabulous work rate and some lovely movement up the court. Well played girls, you worked hard and deserved a better score line. It was a final score of 40-15 to Alton, who were incredibly slick. Frensham must not be disheartened, they are a great side, who have made massive progress in a short space of time. Keep up the hard work girls.
