THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM

Friday 1st December, 2023

THERE ARE STILL TICKETS FOR WE WILL ROCK YOU!

SAFEGUARDING WITH JACK AND JO

Thank you to all the parents who attended Jack's Online Safety webinar this week, it was great to be able to discuss some of the issues facing young people online and how we can work together to help them to manage this. At the end I mentioned some places that parents can go for more help and some the websites I suggested are as follows. Do have a look, my big message was the more we can talk to our children about things the more they know we care and will listen. Have a great Christmas! Here are the links:
CEOP - To report online concerns
Think You You Know - Advice for parents, young people & professionals (teachers!)
Parent Zone - Advice specifically aimed at parents
Child Net - More advice for parents and young people
NSPCC – More advice, with helpful guides including to different popular apps, platforms and websites.

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEALTH CENTRE

Your child should stay at home for 3 days or until better to return to school. Day of symptoms starting is day zero and your child can return to school on day 4 if they are feeling better. Your child must not return to school if they have a temperature (38 degrees or above) and can only return once their temperature has resolved (below 38 degrees).

FRENSHAM PODCASTS

Embark on an inspiring voyage with "My Journey," Frensham Heights' exclusive Careers Podcast! Following riveting discussions with our esteemed staff and Governors, we are thrilled to extend our outreach to parents. My Journey is dedicated to showcasing the diverse and unconventional paths our careers can take, emphasizing that success often emerges from the pursuit of passion and stepping outside one's comfort zone. We invite parents to join us in imparting invaluable insights to our students, demonstrating the myriad opportunities that arise through dedicated effort and bold self-expression. Elevate your child's career awareness by participating in this enriching initiative. For those eager to contribute, please connect with our Head of Careers, Grant Gallacher, at grantgallacher@frensham.org. Let's shape the future together through the power of shared experiences!

This podcast should be of real interest to Years 10 and 11 as they consider what they would like to study at A-level. Here A-level teachers will be discussing some of the big ideas on their courses focusing on the subjects that are not available at GCSE – Film Studies, Sociology, Politics, Psychology, Economics and plenty more to follow. In our first episode, we talk to Charlie Bennett about Film Studies.

SILVER MIRROR MAKING IN THE LAB ECA

After creating a small silver mirror to decorate the Chemistree. Coops wanted to try again and make it bigger as his project in the LAB ECA. This resulted in a wine bottle sized silver mirror by scaling up the quantities of reactants. The chemistry behind this is using Tollens reagent to identify aldehyde functional groups, glucose was used as the source of aldehyde groups. This forms a layer of silver on the inside of the glass.

SANTA'S WORKSHOP

The Reception elves have been busy with writing letters and posting them, wrapping presents and making elves hats and even making their own Winter Wonderland Passports to get to and from the North Pole.

YEAR 12 BRICK LANE TRIP

Last Friday, 1st December, the Year 12 Geographers set out for a field trip to Brick Lane. As part of the topic “Changing Places” A-Level students are required to complete detailed case studies of both their local place and a contrasting place, and there are few more contrasting places in easy reach of the school than Brick Lane in London. Evolving from a unique blend of cultures, our pupils were able to immerse themselves in this richly diverse neighbourhood in the East End. Brick Lane has witnessed large swathes of migrants and refugees throughout the ages. From the Protestant Huguenots fleeing Catholic France in the 17th century and the Jewish arriving during the second World War, through to the Bangladeshi migrants of the 1950s and 60s, there is no better place to witness first-hand the influence of external forces on the character and development of a place in the UK. As well as enjoying the ambience and gaining a ‘sense of place’ for the area, the Year 12s had a selection of fieldwork tasks to complete. Environmental Quality and Clone Town Surveys, Character Trails and questionnaires were all completed with vigour, before a local lunch (curry and/or beigels) and an afternoon left to explore the gentrified vintage shops and enjoy the diverse street art. The return to the train was enhanced by a deviation to Spitalfields Market but sullied by the London prices. A very pleasant day was had by all!

YEAR 9 TRENCH MODELS

Year 9 have been working on their trench projects. These have been produced in various mediums including models, cakes, pictures and Minecraft. The objective is to produce work that is historically accurate and creative. Some of the features of these projects included barb wire; shell holes; dug outs; fire-steps; rats; traverses; listening posts and communication trenches. This has also provided the opportunity to develop the Frensham Skills for Life. Students have exhibited Communication skills through presentations and listening to feedback; Creative Thinking in the form of how they delivered the project; for some Technical Literacy with the use of mine craft to build a trench system and in some cases Teamwork when students have collaborated.

BOARDERS UPDATE

Last weekend the boarders enjoyed some in house poker on Friday night followed by a trip to Gunwharf Quays Christmas market on Saturday and the opportunity to make festive lip balm on Sunday. The houses are continuing to get into the Christmas spirit with Christmas trees up and their lights glowing. Students have been decorating Christmas cookies and making more lovely Christmas decorations to add to the house festivities. Roberts House have a very competitive pool league running this term. Sadly, Lloydy is not doing too well after a 2-0 defeat to Sofia yesterday. Brendan and Ben are looking like the red-hot favourites currently.

SPORTS REPORT

SPORTS REPORT
Under 16s Netball v Sherfield

The U16's put on an outstanding display of netball at home on Monday. The team were bolstered by the Goodwin sisters, Cydney and Sophie from Year 10. It was a great opportunity for some of the younger years to play up. The girls were outstanding from start to finish, dominating play from the starting whistle. The girls were competitive, and powerful in defence, and they were controlled and fluent in attack. The girls have made amazing progress this season and have won all of their matches, bar one. They should be very proud of themselves and what a wonderful way to end the season. The final score was 37-5 to Frensham. Players of the match were Lulu, who was consistently strong throughout at centre and goal attack, and Lexie who turned over a number of balls and blocked the Sherfield attack. I am very proud to have worked with these girls this year and look forward to their performance at Liddington in March 24.

Under 16s Football v More House

I final game of the season under the lights for the under 16s was a fantastic way to end the season. The boys were out the blocks quickly and from the first whistle established themselves playing on the front foot and getting forward. This was rewarded with two goals inside the first ten minutes from Freddy and Luke as the boys move the ball forward with intent. However, More House began to grown in confidence and settled into the game that became an physical and even contest. It became a little scrappy a More house pulled a goal back shortly before half time. At half time the boys reflected on how well they started and this being down to the work rate they were putting in, more house couldn’t cope when we applied early pressure and this was key if we were going to secure the win. The boys managed the second half as well as I have seen all season. Safe and solid at the back, making simply and effective decision. Physical and together in midfield closing the ball down. There were no goals in the second half due to this disciplined performance and a great win to end the season. Well done boys!
