  • Junior School | Frensham Heights

At Frensham, we treat academic and creative subjects equally and within the younger years particularly, our aim is to offer a very broad curriculum allowing each child to find their own strengths and passions. JUNIOR SCHOOL Keeping their curiosity alive. We may look different from more traditional independent schools (no uniforms, prefects or Saturday school) but we have regular routines, high expectations and a deeply purposeful approach to learning. What makes us unique is our diverse curriculum, our creative and caring Junior School Team, and our commitment to teaching bravely and responsively to the children in front of us. Whether indoors or outdoors, structured or spontaneous, learning at Frensham is warm, personal and child-centred. The best way to understand us is simply to visit — you’ll feel the difference immediately. QUICK LINKS FIREFLIES NURSERY TEACHING & LEARNING PASTORAL CARE OUR STAFF ADMISSIONS RECEPTION TO YEAR 6 Whether you are looking for an exciting and different learning experience for your child or you’ve ever worried that their spark might be fading, Frensham might be the home you’re looking for. We believe in keeping children younger for longer by protecting their sense of wonder in a world that often pushes them to grow up too quickly. Children are endlessly fascinating. Their optimism, imagination and creativity are superpowers and our job is to nurture these, not contain them. Every child expresses themselves differently - through words, movement, art, questions or quiet thinking - and our teaching adapts to honour their individuality. By championing children's voices and building a culture of mutual respect, our Junior School is a place where teachers and students learn together, think together and grow together. And have a whole lot of fun along the way! PASTORAL CARE We are progressive, but not without structure. Being modern and forward-thinking means knowing children deeply, helping them grow at their own pace and preparing them for a world we cannot yet imagine. All while protecting their childhood for as long as we can. People who haven’t visited sometimes focus on the no uniforms or first names. To us, these are simple things that reflect real-world relationships and mutual respect. What matters is our culture: teachers earn respect by showing it and children learn to do the same. With small classes and strong relationships, behavioural issues are rare and handled calmly through conversation and reflection. Our Junior School Learning Charter (co-created with Years 4, 5 and 6) sets clear expectations for both students and teachers and is grounded in children’s rights. OUR LEARNING CHARTER - YRS N-3 OUR LEARNING CHARTER - YRS 4-6 At the heart of everything we do are our values: TEACHING & LEARNING Small classes and close relationships mean teachers truly know each child: what excites them, what challenges them and what helps them thrive. Our brilliant Teaching & Learning Assistants help ensure every child is supported, stretched and engaged. Each year group is different so each year, we design teaching that fits them. People sometimes think we’re an “arts school.” While we excel in creative and performing arts, we are equally passionate about academic subjects, sport and outdoor learning. We offer a dynamic, balanced and holistic education where every discipline strengthens the others. A scientist benefits from understanding colour and pattern; a dancer from exploring global cultures; a sports-lover from grasping physics and geometry. All children perform on stage from an early age, even our Fireflies, because confidence and storytelling matter to every learner. We are proudly creative, proudly academic and always child centred. CLASS SIZES Our small classes allow space for conversation, flexibility and personality. Year R: max 10 Year 1: max 10 Years 2 to 6: max 18 We have one class per year from our Reception class to Year 3, and two classes per year in Years 4 to 6. Children can join at any point in the year (space permitting), and we work closely with families to ensure smooth transitions into the space. CURRICULUM Our Project focused curriculum sits at the heart of the teaching and learning in the Junior School and treats creative and academic subjects equally. With Maths, English, Science and Project sessions taught by the year team (with regular use of the outdoors) learning feels purposeful, fun and connected. The aim is to create an immersive learning experience that links subjects together, gives children lots of rich context and also blankets this with additional enrichment and unique experiences. At the centre of the curriculum are three umbrella themes for the whole Junior School across the year: Autumn – People and Self Spring - Society Summer – The Natural World Within these themes then sit termly projects which revolve around a curiosity question (CQ). Examples of this would be: In Year 3 the project is Inventors and Human Legacy and this is fuelled by the CQ - What makes an idea powerful enough to change the world? In Year 6 the project is Refugees and the CQ is - If a refugee’s suitcase could talk, what stories would it tell about hope, fear and courage? The end point of each project? A showcase moment, designed by the children according to their interests and passions and shared and celebrated with their peers, teachers and parents. Adventure is a huge part of Frensham life. From exploring our extensive grounds to trips further afield - the New Forest, Swanage, London and Wales - children learn through real experiences and certainly not just worksheets. Workshops, speakers and project-based learning bring added depth and excitement to the curriculum and bring it further to life. CURRICULUM PROJECTS MAP SPECIALIST TEACHING & ENRICHMENT Alongside their class teachers, children learn with specialists in: PE Performance Music Forest School Outdoor Education IT Modern Foreign Languages CURRICULUM RHYTHM & THE SCHOOL DAY We follow a full timetable, but teachers can extend activities when children are deeply engaged, making up time later - because meaningful learning matters more than ticking boxes. SCHOOL TIMINGS: Fireflies: 7.30am – 6.30pm Years R–3: 8:15am – 3:20pm Years 4–6: 8:30am – 3:30pm Each day includes five class periods, breaks, lunch and optional ECAs at lunchtime and after school. For Reception class through to Year 6, we also run our: Sunrise Sessions (breakfast club) from 7.30am – including a delicious breakfast Sunset Sessions (late-stay club) which runs until 5.30pm – including a tasty light tea TRANSITIONING INTO YEAR 7 Unlike most schools, Year 6 for us is about high-level enrichment and having an amazing time in your final year of primary education. All children in Year 6 are invited to join Year 7, and we then put a support flightpath of activities, information and experiences to help along the way and to make that step as easy and enjoyable as we can. Whether that be chatting to current Year 7s and asking those juicy questions that only children will answer in their unique and honest way, having a day in the life of a Year 7 or meeting their new tutor and tutor group before we break for the summer holidays… there is a great deal in place to ensure we build upon the positive momentum that Year 6 gives the children and also plenty of opportunity for new year 7 faces and families to touch base, check-in and start building those all-important relationships. OUR STAFF We recruit teachers who are imaginative, brave, caring and willing to think differently. Teachers who know children deeply and create joyful, meaningful learning environments. This shared spirit builds a powerful dynamic of trust, happiness and authenticity — the foundation of everything in the Junior School. OUR STAFF

  • Our Approach | Frensham Heights

Frensham Heights is a progressive school. Learning is active, with students exploring, collaborating, discussing and discovering. Our aim is for all students to become independent learners and take their education and future in their own hands. OUR APPROACH OUR TEACHING & LEARNING We pride ourselves on looking at the whole child. Body, mind and spirit. Every child has potential. Not just a narrow potential to do well in academic tests or behave in a classroom, but each has their own potential far wider than this. An amazing imagination. A keen eye for colour or ear for rhythm. A passion for the environment, for numbers, for human rights, for literature. A natural grace on stage or one that’s still developing. We can miss the mark hugely if we judge children with easy to tick boxes when they undoubtedly have so much more to offer. And so, we offer them a very broad curriculum to let each child follow their own path towards fulfilling their unique potential. Until the end of Year 9, all students will explore a diverse timetable made up of mathematical and scientific, creative and performing, linguistic and literary, physical and technological, moral and spiritual, social and human subjects. All held in equal importance. Our GCSEs and A Levels are equally broad allowing students to create a tailor-made curriculum supporting their passions, strengths and goals. Within the classroom, life is just as diverse. Teachers are supported to be brave and innovative with their teaching. Classes are small allowing topics, activities and discussions to be modified, flexible, adaptable to the students involved. Teachers can break the mould, are encouraged to break the mould. If something’s not working, if interest or understanding is failing, they can stop and discuss. How can we make this interesting for you? How can we make this work? And together they can find that spark that has them all engaged, involved and really learning. Non-competitive classrooms allow the shyest to be more bold and the loudest to be more gentle, more considerate – valuable lessons in their own right. It creates a refreshing place to learn and teach. MEET OUR TEACHERS LEARNING RELATIONSHIPS We talk a lot about relationships at Frensham. To be very honest, and it’s probably clear, we are very proud of the relationships that develop here - they form one of our core values. Not just the schoolmates who go on to be lifelong friends and actually not just the relationships between people. At Frensham, really special relationships grow between teachers and students and from that between students and the subjects they become passionate about during their time here. With a more informal setting and smaller classes, the teachers and students really get to know each other. Literally on a first-name basis. This is important because we ask our students to step up and be more responsible and self-motivated than they may need to be elsewhere. We don’t micro-manage, we do support, but ultimately it’s down to each child to take control of their learning. Teachers learn each child’s strengths and weaknesses. They reinforce where needed and push where they can, but most importantly, they are a friendly face. They genuinely want to help, not to intimidate or belittle. Our teachers love the subjects they teach and they really want to pass that on. Their enthusiasm, interest and passion overflows into their students, particularly those that find they love those subjects too. That genuine shared enthusiasm breaks down barriers to learning. There’s no stigma attached. You can love maths and chat equations with your tutor at break. You can sing your heart out in the corridor on the way to class. No one will judge. You can be really academic or truly creative or both. The support you see here between students, between friends, really can bring tears to your eyes. As long as you do your best, take a few risks, step out of your comfort zone now and then, Frensham can support you with whatever your dreams may be. LEARNING ENVIRONMENT In many ways, on first glance, our classrooms won’t look so different from anywhere else, but on second glance, you might notice that the teacher probably isn’t standing at the front. They’re more likely to be mingled in amongst the students. You might start to notice that the volume is a bit higher, it’s not just the teacher talking, the students – in all year groups – will be discussing and taking part too. Some classes might have gone outside, some might be using the tarmac as a giant blackboard or the woods as a setting for some creative writing. In all cases there will be a flexibility at work allowing the lessons to be moulded to keep everyone’s interest high. In every lesson what will stand out is the genuine relationships between the teachers and students. This develops both from our small class sizes and our more informal approach - our first name basis and sense of equality and mutual respect. This creates a learning environment that is not often found in an academic setting - a positive and safe academic learning environment where students and teachers can be brave and not afraid to take risks or make mistakes. SPORTS OUTDOOR ED CREATIVITY Creativity at Frensham is not limited to the creative subjects. It also sits at the heart of our academics. We strive for creativity of thought in every academic pursuit – to look at things differently, to consider a different approach - this forms one of our core values. We hope each student can find their own way to be engaged, that teachers can find a way to get everyone excited. Beyond that, developing a strong practice of creative thinking is imperative for life after Frensham. We aim to develop each student into a questioning and socially conscious young person. Someone who isn’t scared to challenge the norm, to question and speak up, someone who will make a difference whilst at Frensham and beyond. HOMEWORK Students are set homework if it is meaningful and adds something to their learning. We don't set homework just for the sake of it and sometimes giving students time to simply reflect on their learning can be a powerful tool. However, homework does give students the opportunity to work on essential life skills like organisation, time management and self discipline. It can also provide opportunities to consolidate learning and engage in a topic or independent research. Homework can be extremely valuable but never at the expense of student wellbeing. Our priority is about striking the balance between homework providing academic support but also not becoming overwhelming. We want our students to be able to have time out of school to be children - to rest and play. If we strike the balance right, these are not mutually exclusive. SUPPORT FOR LEARNING We have an excellent Support for Learning team and we are able to offer support to children with mild learning difficulties. Through our entrance process, we will assess whether we can meet the needs of each child - this is to ensure that all students can flourish and thrive during their time at Frensham. We are unable to provide dedicated teaching assistants or one-to-one support in class. We are also unable to support children with moderate or severe learning needs. OUR SEN POLICY

Once the children have completed their entrance assessments they stay for lunch in our dining room before enjoying a range of activities across the afternoon. Parents are invited to join us for tea at the end of the day. It is our aim to assess the whole child. Academic tests help us determine if your child will be able to access the curriculum but places go to those who we feel will contribute to and thrive at Frensham. To help us do this, we will request references from your child’s current school and also their two most recent school reports. We also accept enquiries for in-year entrance if there is space. Deferred Entry and Pre-testing Pre-testing offers an opportunity for children to be assessed in the Spring Term of Year 6 for a place in Year 9. By completing assessment at this stage, families can be offered peace of mind and security with regards to their children’s education and the children themselves are free to enjoy their last years at prep school.  Note that we still welcome applications from families of children in Year 8 who would prefer to leave assessment until this stage. We aim to have all papers marked and offers made within two weeks of the assessment weekend. If you are interested in a place in Year 10 please contact the Admissions team to find out more. We expect most students to take the full complement of subjects. The School can provide limited support in English, Maths and with Study Skills if necessary. We can provide reasonable adjustments to accommodate students with mild learning needs. If your child has Individual Needs we will ask you for additional information about any known or suspected difficulties or diagnoses relating to your child’s health, wellbeing or learning abilities – such as a formal Educational Psychologist, Medical or Specialist Teacher’s report and an informal conversation with your child’s current school. This information will help us see if we could reasonably meet your child’s needs. Importantly, it will also help us see if your child could thrive and benefit from everything the school has to offer and be able to contribute in full to the life of the school. VIEW OUR SEN POLICY SEND SCHOLARSHIPS Years 7-11 Enrichment As with most things, we do scholarships a bit differently and so rather than awarding individuals our enrichment programme is open to all and is not applied for in a traditional manner. Instead, students can put themselves forward for enrichment activities and therefore benefit from a wide range of additional activities including those that are related to sport, music, academia and life skills.   Sixth Form Arts Awards Our Sixth Form Arts Awards are for students who show exceptional talent and potential in the Creative and Performing Arts. Monetary awards are offered to selected Sixth Form students in the following disciplines: Dance, Music, Drama, Fine Art, Technical Theatre, Photography, 3D Design and Graphics. Those seeking a Sixth Form Arts Award for either the creative or performing arts will be invited to audition and/or submit a portfolio from the November preceding the September of the year of entry. These are for internal and external applicants. Please click here for more information. scholarships BURSARIES The deadline for applications for entry in September 2026 has closed (31st October 2025). We will reopen for applications for 27/28 applications in September 2026. Our means tested bursaries provide financial support to existing and prospective students. Very much at the heart of our values and ethos, we passionately believe in providing a way in which students who would thrive and flourish at Frensham are able to access the school regardless of their parent’s ability to pay the fees. This does depend on our bursary funds available. Other information: For those seeking a full 100% bursary, we work with The Royal Springboard Charity and we recommend that you look at their website About us | Royal National Children's SpringBoard Foundation We also recommend that all applicants consider the following list of charities which support schools Find a Charity - ETF to see if any of these would apply to you. We do work with some of these charities to support bursary funding. bursaries HM FORCES AND FCDO DISCOUNT We welcome families from the Armed Forces and the Foreign Office to Frensham Heights. We offer a 10% discount off full boarding fees to families serving in HM Forces and the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office for children in School Years 7-13. For eligible families, the CEA (Continuity of Education Allowance) can help towards the cost of a boarding school. Families will need to apply for this directly, and Frensham heights cannot advise on eligibility. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS We welcome international students, with around 25% of boarding students coming from different countries. This creates a culturally diverse, integrated community, where everyone can feel at home. Our less formal environment also lends itself to making lifelong friends so many international students will go home knowing that their Frensham experience will continue well into the future. Assessments can be sent to a child’s current school in their home country and interviews conducted remotely. MORE ABOUT INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS International FAQs 01 How big are your classes? We have one class per year group from Nursery up to Year 3 with small numbers to ensure individual attention. This splits into two classes per year group in Years 4, 5 and 6 with up to 18 per class. In Years 7 and 8, there are usually three tutor groups per year with 16 or 18 students in each. In Year 9, there are four tutor groups. The GCSE and A Level class sizes vary depending on the popularity of student subject choices. 02 What clothes can students wear? We don’t have a uniform, we just ask our students to dress for purpose. Students are free to express their individuality through their clothes as long as it doesn’t interfere with their school day or cause any distraction or offence. Please also ensure that your child has sensible footwear, including waterproof or walking boots and everyday shoes. 03 Can students have bicycles on site? Yes, from Year 7 – please make sure it is insured and in good working order with a strong lock. All medications, including over-the-counter medications, must be handed to the Health Centre on arrival for safe keeping. 05 Do students need a school bag and stationery? Yes, please make sure the bag is suitable for students to carry their books around our vast site. Please also bring a pencil case, pencils, pens, erasers, colouring pencils, etc. It's a good idea to name all personal items. 06 What proportion of students board? We offer boarding from Year 7 upwards - roughly 25% of the students board either as full, weekly or flexi 3 day boarders. Where we have space, students are welcome for an 'occasional night' boarding as well. This should be booked with the boarding house. During the school week there is no differentiation between day and boarding students. 07 How do you handle discipline? Our disciplinary measures are based on mutual respect and self-discipline. We use discussion rather than detention and set targets for changes in behaviour. Depending on the nature of the situation, discussions will occur between the student/s and their teacher or with the Head of School, Deputy Head or Head and if the situation escalates disciplinary sanctions may be used. Aggressive language, shouting and detentions are not used by any staff at Frensham. 08 Can my child take part in competitive sports? We have over 450 sporting fixtures each year for students who love competitive games. If you want your children to love sport, love going to matches and know how to win or lose well, then that’s what they’ll get here. As well as the main sports, we also offer mountain biking, high ropes, surfing trips, hill walking, rock climbing. At the end of the day, our goal is for students to be fit and healthy. 09 Why do teachers use their first names? We have a very different style of relationship between teachers and students. The teachers are still authority figures, but they aren’t frightening or distant. Using first names breaks down a barrier and creates a relationship based on mutual respect rather than reverence. It helps to create a culture of open and honest communication which flows both ways and puts the students in good stead for the real world. Students are treated as equals here at Frensham and leave with the confidence to speak with adults and people in positions of authority. 10 Do you have a space for my child? We fill up quickly from Year 2 upwards so it is worth registering interest as soon as possible. All students who want to be included in the entrance process for entry into all year groups must be registered in advance. Please get in touch at admissions@frensham.org or call 01252 792 561 before registering to see if we have space. The majority of students join for Nursery, Reception, Years 4, 5, 7, 9 and 12, but we welcome interest in other year groups if there is space 11 Do you offer scholarships or bursaries? We offer Honorary Scholarships in Academic, Music, Art, Dance, Drama and Sport. These do not have monetary value but they recognise and celebrate excellence. Scholars have access to a bespoke enrichment programme, with events and trips organised throughout the school year. Means-tested bursaries are available. For more information, please contact admissions@frensham.org 12 Do you specialise in supporting children with learning difficulties? Unfortunately, we are only able to provide support for children with mild learning difficulties as we only have a small Support for Learning team. 13 Do you follow a curriculum? A timetable? We do follow curriculums and class timetables throughout the school. The difference at Frensham is that we can breakaway from the lesson plan if the students aren't truly absorbed, if a different approach is needed - or head outdoors if it will enrich the lesson. Our classrooms are set up for discussions and group work rather than in a linear, face-the-front arrangement and we don’t have a traditional hierarchical system among teachers or students, but there is a strong underlying structure to all aspects of the school. 14 Why don't you have uniforms? Young people need an opportunity to express themselves and to become who they want to become. Don’t be frightened by the non-uniform policy, we haven’t had a school uniform for over 40 years and our students don’t feel the pressure to show off, they simply want to be comfortable. We do have standards and importantly we do have expectations, but it allows students to express themselves and also prepares them for the real world, whether it be university or professional life. In essence, wearing their own clothes helps children feel more at ease and therefore in a better frame of mind to learn. 15 Would your school be suitable for a very academic child? We have a lot of very academic children. We offer a balanced curriculum where students are exposed to traditional academic subjects alongside the creative and performing arts and physical and outdoor education. We encourage students to learn for themselves, to think independently rather than simply study for results. If your child is very academic, open-minded and self-motivated, they will thrive here. What once felt bold, even revolutionary back in 1925, now feels simply right. A way of learning and living that puts children at the heart of everything. This year, we’re taking time to celebrate all that makes Frensham, Frensham. We’d love you to be part of it. Come along to one of our Centenary Events, share the story of an Old Frenshamian for our 100 OFs campaign, or explore the beautiful gifts created by our community in the Centenary Gift Shop. However you join in, you’ll be helping to celebrate 100 years of curiosity and creativity. There’s something special about how Frensham began. Three women, full of courage and vision, wanted to do things differently, to break free from the stiff traditions of Victorian education. They chose this beautiful spot, with its wide skies and rolling Surrey Hills, as the place to bring their ideas to life. They knew that children need to move, to explore, to imagine, to ask questions and to be truly heard. That spirit of freedom and curiosity still shapes us today, just as it did when Frensham first opened its doors in 1925. Our Founders Frensham Heights was founded in 1925 by educationalists Beatrice Ensor and Isabel King with the aid of a generous benefactor, Edith Douglas-Hamilton. As Joint Headmistresses, they were passionate about offering an alternative style of education with the child at its heart. A school and a community based on mutual respect, tolerance and generosity of spirit which would educate the whole child – mind, body and spirit. Read More Centenary Events Our Centenary year will be filled with moments to remember, a whole calendar of celebrations running from September through to July. The 1925 Student Day launched celebrations in September and we’ll close with our Centenary Founder’s Day on 4th July 2026. Along the way, there’ll be plenty of favourite traditions like Fireworks Night and the Christmas Fair plus a whole-school Centenary Sports Festival in the summer and our annual musicals and plays that bring the community together, time and time again.
