  • Schools | Frensham Heights

At Frensham Heights we offer a really good robust academic environment alongside a much richer experience for students from the age of 3 to 18. Our wider school is split into Early Years, Junior, Middle, Senior and Sixth Form - all on one site. OUR SCHOOL For our students from Nursery through Sixth Form, our aim is to provide a really good robust academic environment alongside a much richer experience as well. Our students go on to be doctors, dancers and engineers. They go on to follow a whole range of careers with a personal self-belief that helps them succeed. But more importantly they learn the skills, the future skills, to build a life not just a living. Our School QUICK LINKS EYFS JUNIOR MIDDLE SENIOR SIXTH FORM EYFS EYFS Nursery and Reception Our Nursery and Reception children spend most of their day learning through a method called Planning in the Moment. Our quick-thinking Early Years teachers mould the day’s learning around whatever interests the children may bring in with them. There are woods to explore, trees to climb - far too much to explore to sit down inside all day. Plus our youngest children also have specialist teaching in art, performing arts, music, PE and modern foreign languages. As they move up to Reception, the children won't waste any time sitting at desks. Their curiosity is too eager and their imaginations too strong. Instead the teachers will filter Mathematics, Phonics and English through short games and activities. It’s the kind of education that keeps the children’s spirits alive and keen to learn more while giving them crucial skills for learning. It teaches them that their opinions and interests are important, that their voices, no matter how little, will be heard and most importantly, that school is a lot of fun. FIND OUT MORE FIREFLIES NURSERY JUNIOR JUNIOR SCHOOL Years 1 to 6 At Frensham, we are not prepping for anything. From the day each child joins they are each starting off on their own educational journey – it’s the real thing, not a run up. We welcome them with the full understanding and expectation that they each have different interests, personalities and strengths and different paths to follow. This is a wonderful release for the children and the teachers. They can fully embrace the unique combination of characters within a class and dive together into their learning adventure without limiting themselves to ticking boxes or ranking and rating each achievement. We know genuine learning happens when you’re happy, unhindered by external pressures, and that is our true focus here, for every child. Our Junior School children have active, varied days. We tend to stick to a timetable, but we also have the freedom and flexibility to break from the norm if it boosts curiosity, creativity and a passion for learning. FIND OUT MORE SENIOR SENIOR SCHOOL Years 9 to 11 Years 9 to 11 are formative years for all students not only academically, but emotionally and socially. Like most mainstream schools, we follow the GCSE curriculum and assessment processes. Our teaching and learning during these years is closely curriculum-led, but we do our best to continuously support our students’ personal passions and interests. Rather than focusing only on the exam results, our aim is to give our students the knowledge and the thinking skills - creativity, problem solving, flexibility, resilience - to take on whatever may turn up on the exams, but also in life beyond. Emotionally and socially, these can be tricky years for all teenagers to navigate and this is where the strong relationships and outstanding pastoral care at Frensham can really give them the chance to enjoy what can be very stressful years. In Year 9, all students take part in a trip to the Peak District. It is unique and beneficial in so many ways. It is technology-free. It is far enough from home for a true independence and self-confidence to grow within each child. They step outside their comfort zone, leave teenage stresses behind and are able to really appreciate the beauty of their environment and the relationships they have with friends and teachers. FIND OUT MORE SIXTH FORM Years 12 to 13 SIXTH FIND OUT MORE Frensham Sixth Form is a really unique place. It offers the freedom and responsibility of a Sixth Form setting with the vibrancy and opportunities of a whole school community. These are the years when students are on the brink of adulthood, readying for their first big step into independence, whatever that might be. A-Levels mean that during these years our teaching and learning is more curriculum-led, but our classes are very small and teachers are able to offer bespoke teaching to the class in front of them, continuously engaging with their students’ personal passions and interests. Rather than focusing purely on exam results, our aim is to give our students the knowledge and the thinking skills - creativity, problem solving, flexibility, resilience - to take on whatever may turn up on the exams, but also in life beyond. The strong relationships and outstanding pastoral care at Frensham can really give students the confidence to be themselves, take things in stride and go beyond their own expectations.

Powerpoint OCR Transition Document Drama During your course you will explore a wide variety of live theatrical performances, play texts, practitioners and theatrical genres. Over the summer, before you begin the course, we would recommend that you see at least one live production and begin to consider how directors, performers and designers work together to produce a show that makes an impact on a live audience. Your set texts for the course will be MACHINAL by Sophie Treadwell and THE TEMPEST by William Shakespeare, and we would suggest you familiarise yourself with these either by reading them or watching a film/live theatre version. You will explore a variety of practitioners and other play texts, none of which will be decided until the course is underway and we have had the opportunity to work together. We do not require any specific advance learning but would encourage you to use the reading list below over the summer to begin preparing for your course. SUGGESTED READING LIST As A level students you are expected to conduct independent study, including research and reading around your subject. Outside your lesson times you are expected to conduct an equal amount of study (so for 5 lessons a week this would be just over 4 ½ hours). There will be plenty of time beyond your set prep for you to access the list below. All of these will give you a greater understanding of the world of theatre and those who work in it. Most of these are available through the Drama department or the Library, and if you would like to borrow a copy you are most welcome. Anything we do not currently have can be ordered for you. Please note – this is just a selection of the texts we recommend and you may also wish to read others. We would be happy to recommend a further selection once you have exhausted these! English We are thrilled that you have chosen to study the English literature A level course with us here at Frensham in September. A level style allows for freedom of thought and interpretation and with this in mind, you need to read the two texts detailed below over the summer so you can bring your fresh ideas to the lessons in September. It might be useful, but not mandatory, to consider purchasing alongside these core texts, the accompanying York notes for A Level study which are priced £7.99 and are available for both texts (visit www.yorknotes.com for details.) The above two texts will form the basis of your coursework, which is worth 20% of your final A Level grade. The emphasis of the coursework is designed to promote love of literature, critical, independent and thought-provoking responses which are not necessarily designed to be prescriptively taught; so, wider interpretations are of the essence. So having an understanding and familiarity of the coursework texts before you start the course will be invaluable. • OLD FRENSHAMIANS | Frensham Heights

A place for Old Frenshamians to get in touch and find out what's going on at Frensham Heights and beyond. WHO WE BECOME Frensham is definitely not a one size fits all kind of school so it's not surprising that our alumni go on to follow an amazing array of careers - dancers, doctors, engineers, actors, politicians, musicians, sculptors, scientists, teachers, entrepreneurs... But the one thing they all have in common is that they all remain part of our community. Frensham Heights is a school that stays with you long after you leave. The relationships built here, the confidence grown and the personalities that have emerged - they all last long beyond each students time here. We are so proud of our students and staff, past and present. They are what make this school unique and unforgettable. WELCOME OLD FRENSHAMIANS! Join us on the dedicated Old Frenshamian website to see what's happening in your community. OF WEBSITE CONTACT US A FEW WORDS FROM A FEW OLD FRENSHAMIANS FLORENCE ANDREWS | OLD FRENSHAMIAN "The freedom given at Frensham, perhaps more than at other schools, helps students to be more ambitious and driven rather than the other way round. I think naturally humans want to learn – you look at toddlers and they want to learn to walk, they want to learn to talk – and I don't think that changes. The more regimented and stifling you make an educational environment, the more people resist it and decide they don't like learning. Frensham's really good at spotting what someone loves and what their talent is... and they follow that." HEAR MORE FROM FLORENCE

You will need to sign them in and out at Reception. 02 Behaviour Frensham Heights has a strong ethos based on respect for one another. It’s important to us that everyone is treated with respect and kindness. We give students the opportunity to explain when they feel there is a problem or if they have a conflict with another student. Usually students will be taken away from the situation and given a chance to calm down, speak and resolve. We will either inform you verbally or in writing of such conflicts. Please pass on any messages concerning behaviour to your child’s tutor. For more serious behavioural problems, please refer to our School Rules here. 03 Calendar A digital School Calendar is available at the start of each term. Our calendar is also available online on the parent portal and the week ahead will be shared in Friday's newsletter. 04 Changes at Home Please let your child's tutor or Head of School know if there are changes to your family situation, moving house, illness, work commitments or new arrivals. We can help support you and your child through these. 05 Class Reps / Parents Voice Each year group has a Class Rep plus an additional Boarding Class Rep. Please make sure your dog is under control and on a lead at all times and remember that some students and adults may be frightened of dogs. 09 Drop Off Please drop your child off in the Drop-off zone each morning. Please use one of the queues on either side and drive along as far as you can before dropping. Please don't drive down the middle and stop to drop-off as this blocks the flow of traffic. The drop-off is a drop and go zone, if you need to get out of your car for any reason, please park in the Main Car Park and let your child walk in from there. 10 Email We generally only send you communication by email, but it is worth checking with your child to see if they have anything that requires your attention. 11 Founders' Day This is a fun, family day on the last Saturday of the Summer Term where we all come together to celebrate Frensham Heights. The dress code is informal and you can bring a picnic or buy food and drinks here. If in doubt please contact the Health Centre for advice on school attendance. If you are keeping your child at home, please let Reception and your child's tutor know as soon as possible either by telephone or email. If your child is absent from school for any reason please phone or email Reception. • PARENT REPRESENTATIVES | Frensham Heights

Frensham Heights Parent Voice is different from a PTA or traditional Parents Committee. Parent Voice is a team of elected parent volunteers dedicated to help support new and existing parents and collaborate with the school in an innovative and productive format. OUR PARENT REPRESENTATIVES PARENT REPRESENTATIVES Parent Year Representatives (Reps) are volunteer parents who play a key role in creating a welcoming, inclusive and vibrant parent community at Frensham Heights. Each year group has its own rep who is a friendly point of contact and helps parents stay informed, feel welcomed and connected to school life. They share useful information and reminders, support new families as they join the school, and help bring parents together through informal socials and events. They also play a wider role in supporting the school community, working collaboratively with staff, other Year Reps and Friends of Frensham, and occasionally helping to welcome prospective families at events such as open days. Parent Year Reps are an important link between families and the school, helping to ensure that every parent feels informed, supported and part of the community.
