- Music | Frensham Heights
Music is an important part of our curriculum. We want to ensure that every child has the opportunity to listen, perform, explore and enjoy a wide range of music. MUSIC OUR MUSIC CURRICULUM Music is a set part of the curriculum from Nursery through Year 9. Students in these years will have at least one dedicated music lesson per week. The curriculum for these years has been recently redesigned to make it more diverse, more practical, more focussed on SMSC, and most importantly, more fun! We now have a dedicated Junior Music specialist teacher, who will focus on Nursery to Year 3 while the rest of our team will share the teaching of Years 4 – 13. Junior School students in Years 4 - 6 learn a new instrument each year: strings in Year 4, wind/brass in Year 5 and ukulele/piano in Year 6, with our specialist instrumental teachers providing tuition in small groups. There is now more of a focus on Music Production and the use of sequencing software in Key Stages 2 and 3, so that our students can develop skills to prepare them for a future in the Music industry, if they wish. Once students leave Year 9, Music is no longer a compulsory part of the curriculum, but they have many options if they wish to continue. Within the Years 10 & 11 timetable, they can opt for our Music GCSE and at Sixth Form they can study Music A-Level and the new RSL Creative Music Industry course. REGISTER FOR PRIVATE MUSIC & LAMDA LESSONS Outside of the timetable, there are a wealth of opportunities both in a range of performances that run throughout the year (see below) and in our extensive extracurricular clubs, such as: Orchestra, Senior Choir, String Ensemble, Music Production Club, Funk/Soul Band, Composition Workshop, Junior Band Workshop, Junior School Singers and Flute Ensemble. Our aim is to incorporate Music into as many aspects of the school as possible. We have recently purchased a busking speaker to allow our musicians to perform on a whim and there is a jam piano (kindly painted by Year 7 Art students) available outside the Aldridge Theatre. We have also secured a Classical Spotlight at the beginning of each series of Morning Talks which run throughout the year. The Music Department is buzzing with student band rehearsals, and our newly purchased drum kits and amps are getting a lot of use. There are now three rooms that are plug-and-play ready for jamming, and the studio is up and running for recording. music lessons PERIPATETIC MUSIC LESSONS In addition to teaching music lessons as part of the curriculum from Early Years right through to A Level, we can also offer individual instrumental and vocal tuition during the school day to students in Year 4 upwards. - FAQS | Frensham Heights
This is a quick list of terms and queries you may come across during your time at Frensham. FAQS (YRS 7 & UP) Frequently asked questions 01 Appointments Please let Reception and your child's tutor know if your child will be going out of school for an appointment. You will need to sign them in and out at Reception. 02 Behaviour Frensham Heights has a strong ethos based on respect for one another. It’s important to us that everyone is treated with respect and kindness. We give students the opportunity to explain when they feel there is a problem or if they have a conflict with another student. Usually students will be taken away from the situation and given a chance to calm down, speak and resolve. We will either inform you verbally or in writing of such conflicts. Please pass on any messages concerning behaviour to your child’s tutor. For more serious behavioural problems, please refer to our School Rules here. 03 Calendar A digital School Calendar is available at the start of each term. Our calendar is also available online on the parent portal and the week ahead will be shared in Friday's newsletter. 04 Changes at Home Please let your child's tutor or Head of School know if there are changes to your family situation, moving house, illness, work commitments or new arrivals. We can help support you and your child through these. 05 Class Reps / Parents Voice Each year group has a Class Rep plus an additional Boarding Class Rep. These will be communicated to you at the start of the Autumn Term. The class rep sits on the Parents’ Voice committee, which helps support new and existing parents and collaborates with the school. You can find out more about Parents' Voice here. 06 Contact Details Please let Reception and your child's tutor know if any of your contact details change, even temporarily. 07 Contacting Staff You are welcome to send any staff at Frensham an email. Parents are welcome to bring their dog to school at pick-up or drop-off, but please pick up any mess and don’t take them inside the buildings. Please make sure your dog is under control and on a lead at all times and remember that some students and adults may be frightened of dogs. 09 Drop Off Please drop your child off in the Drop-off zone each morning. Please use one of the queues on either side and drive along as far as you can before dropping. Please don't drive down the middle and stop to drop-off as this blocks the flow of traffic. The drop-off is a drop and go zone, if you need to get out of your car for any reason, please park in the Main Car Park and let your child walk in from there. 10 Email We generally only send you communication by email, but it is worth checking with your child to see if they have anything that requires your attention. 11 Founders' Day This is a fun, family day on the last Saturday of the Summer Term where we all come together to celebrate Frensham Heights. We have one class per year group from Nursery up to Year 3 with small numbers to ensure individual attention. This splits into two classes per year group in Years 4, 5 and 6 with up to 18 per class. In Years 7 and 8, there are usually three tutor groups per year with 16 or 18 students in each. In Year 9, there are four tutor groups. The GCSE and A Level class sizes vary depending on the popularity of student subject choices. 02 What clothes can students wear? We don’t have a uniform, we just ask our students to dress for purpose. Students are free to express their individuality through their clothes as long as it doesn’t interfere with their school day or cause any distraction or offence. Please also ensure that your child has sensible footwear, including waterproof or walking boots and everyday shoes. 03 Can students have bicycles on site? Yes, from Year 7 – please make sure it is insured and in good working order with a strong lock. All students who have a bicycle at school are asked to sign a Bike Contract, which states the basic expectations on safe and considerate use of bicycles in and around school. Apart from those in the Sixth Form, all students need to wear a bicycle helmet. 04 Can students bring medication to school? All medications, including over-the-counter medications, must be handed to the Health Centre on arrival for safe keeping. 05 Do students need a school bag and stationery? Yes, please make sure the bag is suitable for students to carry their books around our vast site. Please also bring a pencil case, pencils, pens, erasers, colouring pencils, etc. It's a good idea to name all personal items. 06 What proportion of students board? We offer boarding from Year 7 upwards - roughly 25% of the students board either as full, weekly or flexi 3 day boarders. Where we have space, students are welcome for an 'occasional night' boarding as well. This should be booked with the boarding house. During the school week there is no differentiation between day and boarding students. 07 How do you handle discipline? Our disciplinary measures are based on mutual respect and self-discipline. We use discussion rather than detention and set targets for changes in behaviour. Depending on the nature of the situation, discussions will occur between the student/s and their teacher or with the Head of School, Deputy Head or Head and if the situation escalates disciplinary sanctions may be used. Aggressive language, shouting and detentions are not used by any staff at Frensham. 08 Can my child take part in competitive sports? We have over 450 sporting fixtures each year for students who love competitive games. If you want your children to love sport, love going to matches and know how to win or lose well, then that’s what they’ll get here. As well as the main sports, we also offer mountain biking, high ropes, surfing trips, hill walking, rock climbing. At the end of the day, our goal is for students to be fit and healthy. A message from the Director of Support for Learning If your child has had a previous or current specialist teacher, speech and language therapist or occupational therapist’s report, can you please ensure that we have this information in the Support for Learning Department. Equally, I would be grateful if you could please send in a copy of any Educational Psychologist’s report that you may have for your child. These reports are vital in informing class and subject teachers of relevant needs. - Beverley Wrigglesworth Director of Support for Learning A message from the Head of Boarding Full, weekly, 3 day flexi and occasional boarding are available to all our students from Year 7 upwards. Occasional boarding is adhoc on a first come, first serve basis - 2 days equivalent per week/per term for Years 7-9 and 1 day for Years 10 and up. The occasional boarding rate is £87.60 per night. SUMMER WORK FOR SIXTH FORM STARTERS Students in certain courses will really benefit from completing a bit of work over the summer. Please see below a list of courses and the relevant work. Not all subjects are shown so don’t worry if you don’t see your course, it just means your tutor has chosen not to ask for any work to be prepared in advance. Suggested Summer Work Biology Please read and complete the OCR A-Level Biology transition test and the OCR A-Level Biology (Maths element) transition test 3D Design Visit at least one exhibition/ museum (Design Museum, V&A, British Museum – Ideally that has a Product Design / Technology / Architecture / Jewellery focus, but if you can’t find anything as relevant visit an Art or Photography exhibition. Complete an account of the experience, both visually (drawings, sketches, photographs) and some written thoughts on the work seen (try to talk about what particularly draws you to specific pieces and talk about the design choices that have been made to make it aesthetically pleasing). Start a Pinterest board or scrap book to collect images of products and buildings that interest and inspire you - Focus on Architecture, Furniture, Lighting, Jewellery. Business Business students need to complete the Business A Level Year 11 to 12 Bridging Resources which they can find here . You can find the mentioned numeracy assessment here. Computer Science You are going to be introduced to Object-Orientated Programming (OOP) as part of your A Level. You may already be familiar this from your own projects, but your task is to install a suitable IDE and learn the basic syntax to deploy OOP in Python. (If you are completely unfamiliar with Python, please let me know and I will set you up with the resources you need.) Decide which IDE you would like to use. Download and install the software from their websites. You may need to get some help from YouTube to do this but that is all part of A Level thinking and getting yourself to independently learn. Python works well in the following IDEs: Thonny PyCharm Visual Studio (only use if you are a very confident programmer already) Learn the basic Python syntax to: Create classes & Objects Understand Methods & Parameters Build an understanding of inheritance and polymorphism Use W3 Schools to help you complete this task: Python OOP (Object-Oriented Programming) Once you have these skills learned you could apply the to something a little more interesting – maybe get started on a game or find another way to use them. Chemistry Please use the information in the PowerPoint to help you complete the questions in the OCR transition from GCSE to A-level maths skills document. Powerpoint OCR Transition Document Drama During your course you will explore a wide variety of live theatrical performances, play texts, practitioners and theatrical genres. Over the summer, before you begin the course, we would recommend that you see at least one live production and begin to consider how directors, performers and designers work together to produce a show that makes an impact on a live audience. Your set texts for the course will be MACHINAL by Sophie Treadwell and THE TEMPEST by William Shakespeare, and we would suggest you familiarise yourself with these either by reading them or watching a film/live theatre version. You will explore a variety of practitioners and other play texts, none of which will be decided until the course is underway and we have had the opportunity to work together. We do not require any specific advance learning but would encourage you to use the reading list below over the summer to begin preparing for your course. SUGGESTED READING LIST As A level students you are expected to conduct independent study, including research and reading around your subject. Outside your lesson times you are expected to conduct an equal amount of study (so for 5 lessons a week this would be just over 4 ½ hours). There will be plenty of time beyond your set prep for you to access the list below. All of these will give you a greater understanding of the world of theatre and those who work in it. Most of these are available through the Drama department or the Library, and if you would like to borrow a copy you are most welcome. Anything we do not currently have can be ordered for you. Alongside this make sure your staying physical. Work on your strength, flexibility and stamina. Keep yourself healthy and strong ready for September. Economics Please find resources here. English We are thrilled that you have chosen to study the English literature A level course with us here at Frensham in September. A level style allows for freedom of thought and interpretation and with this in mind, you need to read the two texts detailed below over the summer so you can bring your fresh ideas to the lessons in September. Atonement by Ian McEwan: ISBN:978-0-099-42979-1 Vintage (£9.99) The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald: ISBN: 978-0-141-18263-6 Penguin Classics (£6.99) Both texts are readily available on Amazon. It might be useful, but not mandatory, to consider purchasing alongside these core texts, the accompanying York notes for A Level study which are priced £7.99 and are available for both texts (visit www.yorknotes.com for details.) The above two texts will form the basis of your coursework, which is worth 20% of your final A Level grade. The emphasis of the coursework is designed to promote love of literature, critical, independent and thought-provoking responses which are not necessarily designed to be prescriptively taught; so, wider interpretations are of the essence. So having an understanding and familiarity of the coursework texts before you start the course will be invaluable. If you have any questions before September, please feel free to contact us on the emails below. We do of course hope that the prospect of reading these two outstanding novels over the summer is a welcomed one; we think you are in for a real treat! Happy reading! Samantha Stuart (Head of English) Teachers of A Level: Alison Bundy and Zoë Richardson You can contact us via email by using the format firstnamelastname@frensham.org Fine Art Visit at least one art exhibition or museum in person . Philosophy We would suggest that all philosophy students subscribe to the ‘Crash Course Philosophy’ YouTube channel and watch a few clips introducing key areas, such as ‘What is Philosophy’, ‘How to argue – Philosophical Reasoning’ and ‘Introduction to Ethics’. We also recommend subscribing to ‘In Our Time’ on BBC Sounds. It has lots of great podcasts on different philosophical thinkers ancient and modern. If you enjoy reading: · A Little History of Philosophy’ by Nigel Warburton would be a great starting point for Western Philosophy. · ‘The Puzzle of Ethics’ by Peter Vardy explores a range of ethical questions and the approaches of major philosophers, making it a great introduction to moral philosophy. Psychology We would suggest that all psychology students subscribe to the ‘Crash Course Psychology’ Youtube channel and watch a few clips introducing key areas, such as ‘Intro to Psychology’, ‘Remembering and Forgetting’ and ‘Social Influence’. We also recommend signing up to the British Psychological Society Digest so you can get a feel for current psychological research. You can sign up here. Finally, we would highly recommend reading The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson and anything by Malcolm Gladwell, in particular, Blink. Sociology We recommend that you put the BBC News and The Guardian apps on your phone, so you can keep up to date on current affairs and social/educational issues. On BBC Radio 4 there is a brilliant show called Thinking Allowed which you can listen to here. You could also read The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. All routine vaccinations are carried out by the NHS Immunisation Nurses from the Department of Health. Currently, these are: Flu nasal spray vaccinations for Junior School students HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is offered to all girls and boys in Year 8 Final School Booster (diphtheria, tetanus and polio) is offered to all students in Year 9 Men ACWY is offered to all students in Year 9 05 Do you undertake school medical examinations? In line with Department of Health recommendations, we will undertake routine health screening, physical and wellbeing of all new starters. This will be completed on admission and will include height, weight and a basic vision screening by the School Nurse. This is also an opportunity for your child to meet with the school nursing team. Please note the basic vision screening does not replace an eye test by a trained eye health professional and as per NHS recommendations, children and young people should receive an eye test every 2 years. Parents/Guardians can consent for this new student nurse health check on the medical form. 06 When can my child attend medical, dental and optician appointments? Whenever possible, please arrange dental, medical and optician appointments outside school hours or during school holidays. If a student must attend an unplanned appointment during school time, a staff member will accompany the student to this appointment in a taxi. The cost of the taxi journey will be charged to your child’s school bill. If the student is 16 years of age or over and it is appropriate to do so, and the student is happy to they can attend the appointment on their own in a taxi booked by school. The taxi would again be charged to the student’s school account. 07 Do you have a school counsellor? Our School Counsellors provide a confidential service if students feel they would like to have time to talk. Students can make an appointment through the School Nurse or by contacting the Counsellors directly on counsellor@frensham.org 08 Which GP Surgery do the Boarders use? GPs from Holly Tree Surgery, Rowledge are the Medical Officers for the school. All boarders are registered with Holly Tree Surgery unless you inform the Health Centre that you want to opt out on admission. To register your child, we will need a completed medical form before your child is due to start. The form can be downloaded here. The doctors hold a surgery at the Health Centre on Tuesdays at 2.15pm and Thursdays at 10.30am. Any boarder registered with the practice can make an appointment through the School Nurse and, if required, can request to see a male or female doctor. If your child needs to see a doctor at home during the holidays or at weekends, they should be seen as a temporary resident with a local GP. Please do not re-register your child as this will mean they are no longer registered at the school GP practice. Boarders requiring travel vaccines (after parental consent has been obtained) can be taken to the travel clinic at Holly Tree Surgery and any fee will be added to your school bill. Parents should inform the school nurses of any unscheduled vaccinations given by other centres to enable us to keep your child's vaccination records up to date. Boarders registered with the school GP practice may have an initial consultation as needed with the GP when they start at Frensham Heights. 09 Confidentiality & school healthcare professionals The Fraser Guidelines and Gillick Competency framework are legal frameworks that guide healthcare professionals in assessing a child’s ability to make informed decisions about their health and treatment. At Frensham Heights Health Centre, these guidelines are applied to ensure that children receive appropriate medical care whilst respecting their rights and responsibilities of healthcare providers. Learn more about this framework from the NSPCC Gillick competence and Fraser guidelines | NSPCC Learning
- ESSENTIAL KIT | Frensham Heights
Clothing and technical equipment specifications for different courses and activities. ESSENTIAL KIT Essential Kit ESSENTIAL KIT 01 PE Kit PE kit can be bought online at www.schoolblazer.com where you will be able to see the full range of kit on the dedicated Frensham Heights pages. Nursery to Year 3 PE Kit Please note, Schoolblazer recommends buying the older PE kit for Year 3, we don’t require this for Year 3, we recommend the kit as shown above, but it is your choice if you want to buy big to wear in Year 4 as well. They will be wearing their PE kit all day in Year 3, so choose something they will be comfortable in. Yrs 4 & up PE Kit (to see all items in Schoolblazer, you need to select 'prefer not to say' for your child's gender) Essential items: Fitness t-shirt Bottoms, choose from below*: * if none of these are comfortable for your child, they may wear navy or black 2-in-1 running style shorts like these - click to view Long socks Shin pads and mouth guards are also essential for everyone Shin pads can be bought from any sports store and should be the correct size for your child. Mouth guards can be bought before your child starts school but parents will be able to buy a custom-fitted mouth guard from Opro. Our Sports Department will send you more details in September about booking your child in for an appointment to be fitted for these at the beginning of term. Swimwear Boys are asked to bring swimming trunks/shorts (not beach wear) and swimming goggles. Girls are asked to bring a one-piece swimsuit in a plain colour, swimming goggles and a swim hat Footwear Boots - can be used for football and rugby. Something simple like this will work. Trainers - Astro trainers are perfect for all year round. For summer term, some more comprehensive running/athletic trainers are useful. Sports bags As you will see when you log on, Schoolblazer also stock a sports bag, but students can bring any sensible sports bag as long as it is clearly named and not too bulky. Desirable items: Optional items: Hockey stick - not needed as we will provide one for lessons. However, if you would like to buy a basic stick its always nice for students to bring their own, especially if they aspire to play in matches. (Wouldn’t be needed until January). Cricket Whites - not essential. Rugby - only additional kit needed is a gumshield, this is also a requirement for hockey so must be purchased before January! You can find these cheaply online (Amazon/Sports Direct) or we have partnership with Opro if you wanted a more specific product but is quite expensive - click here. 02 Outdoor Education & Forest School Children in Nursery to Year 3 get their first taste of the wonder and excitement of outdoor learning through Forest School, which they have as part of the weekly curriculum. Wellington boots are definitely required. Waterproof jackets and trousers are provided. Children in Years 4 to 6 can take part in Forest Class as an extracurricular activity. All Junior School students will require a waterproof jacket. For general one-day OE activities and extracurricular activities (ECAs), the essential list for all Middle School and Sixth Form students is: 1 quick-drying t-shirt 1 pair of quick-drying trousers 1 waterproof jacket 1 pair of waterproof trousers 1 pair of walking boots or sturdy trainers 1 fleece Students taking part in longer OE activities, including Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, will be given a relevant kit list in advance. 03 Maths Students in Years 7-11 need the usual equipment for writing and drawing, plus a ruler, compass (for drawing circles), protractor (measuring angles) and a calculator. For calculators we recommend the Casio FX-83GT CW or the slightly more expensive Casio FX-991CW (which has better functionality suitable in Y10/Y11 but can also be used in Y7/Y8/Y9). Students in the Sixth Form studying A Level Maths need a calculator (we recommend the FX-991CW) but a graphical calculator Casio FX-CG100 would benefit all those studying A Level and Further Maths (but this is not essential). We can often get the graphical calculator at discounted rates so please ask your Maths teacher before purchasing. Note: For students that are planning to study A-Level or Further Maths it would be worth considering purchasing the Casio FX-CG100 (in year 10 or 11), this can be arranged through the school usually at a discounted rate so please speak to your Maths teacher before purchasing to see if appropriate for your child. 04 Dance Junior School School PE kit is preferred. Hair needs to be tied back. Year 7-11 Students School PE kit is preferred. Other suitable clothing includes jogging bottoms, leggings, footless tights or shorts with a T-shirt, vest top or leotard. Feet need to be bare or suitable soft sole dance shoes. Long hair needs to be tied back. ECA Students Suitable clothing includes jogging bottoms, leggings, footless tights or shorts with a T-shirt, vest top or leotard. Feet need to be bare or suitable soft sole dance shoes. Long hair needs to be tied back. Note: External providers may require specific uniform. These will be outlined at sign up. 05 Laptops All students in Years 7 to 13 must have a laptop. In the 2025/26 academic year we introduced a laptop lease scheme for student devices. The aim is for all students to attend school with the same device, which makes it easier to support and to manage in the classroom. We have chosen a Lenovo – 13w 2-in-1 Gen 3 device as our specified school device and we have various fixed term lease/purchase options available. This device will come with a stylus and a shock proof case. They also come with an accidental damage support package and we have a swap out facility available whereby we lend a laptop to the student should their laptop need to be sent off for repair. The school will manage the repair service for you. The devices will be built to a school specification and managed by the school. If ordered by the 1st August they will be ready for collection at school at the beginning of the September term. The attachment below gives information about the scheme and how to place an order for a laptop, but a more detailed walk through of the scheme is available from this YouTube link Making 1:2:1 devices schemes at Frensham Heights Easy4u! (youtube.com) If you have any questions regarding the laptops and the lease, please contact Easy4U (their email address is on both the flyer and the video) in the first instance. All other IT queries please do contact IT@frensham.org 06 Photography Students studying both GCSE and A Level should have their own DSLR or similar – it hasn’t got to be top of the range but it must have the feature to change the shutter speed / aperture / iso. The major contenders as we know are Canon or Nikon but there are a lot of other options. The school cameras are Canon 1300D (think this model is now obsolete, look at something like 250D or 2000D, the more zeros the lower the spec) - if students want to be able to use the lenses that school have then they should obviously take this into consideration. Most standard camera bodies come with a standard lens (18-55) any additional lenses are a bonus ! Students could also consider mirrorless which is a smaller/ less chunky alternative (ie. Canon EOS R100 - Compact Mirrorless Digital Camera or similar) or there are compact camera that you don’t have the facility to change the lens. A good place to benchmark price is www.wexphotovideo.com https://www.wexphotovideo.com/canon-eos-2000d-digital-slr-camera-body-with-18-55mm-is-ii-lens-1655053/ Most cameras come with just one battery, a spare can be useful and remember all cameras need an SD card – better to have a couple of lower size storage than one big one, just incase of damage or losing it.
