  • Schools | Frensham Heights

At Frensham Heights we offer a really good robust academic environment alongside a much richer experience for students from the age of 3 to 18. Our wider school is split into Early Years, Junior, Middle, Senior and Sixth Form - all on one site. OUR SCHOOL For our students from Nursery through Sixth Form, our aim is to provide a really good robust academic environment alongside a much richer experience as well. Our students go on to be doctors, dancers and engineers. They go on to follow a whole range of careers with a personal self-belief that helps them succeed. But more importantly they learn the skills, the future skills, to build a life not just a living. Our School QUICK LINKS EYFS JUNIOR MIDDLE SENIOR SIXTH FORM EYFS EYFS Nursery and Reception Our Nursery and Reception children spend most of their day learning through a method called Planning in the Moment. Our quick-thinking Early Years teachers mould the day’s learning around whatever interests the children may bring in with them. There are woods to explore, trees to climb - far too much to explore to sit down inside all day. Plus our youngest children also have specialist teaching in art, performing arts, music, PE and modern foreign languages. As they move up to Reception, the children won't waste any time sitting at desks. Their curiosity is too eager and their imaginations too strong. Instead the teachers will filter Mathematics, Phonics and English through short games and activities. It’s the kind of education that keeps the children’s spirits alive and keen to learn more while giving them crucial skills for learning. It teaches them that their opinions and interests are important, that their voices, no matter how little, will be heard and most importantly, that school is a lot of fun. FIND OUT MORE FIREFLIES NURSERY JUNIOR JUNIOR SCHOOL Years 1 to 6 At Frensham, we are not prepping for anything. From the day each child joins they are each starting off on their own educational journey – it’s the real thing, not a run up. We welcome them with the full understanding and expectation that they each have different interests, personalities and strengths and different paths to follow. This is a wonderful release for the children and the teachers. They can fully embrace the unique combination of characters within a class and dive together into their learning adventure without limiting themselves to ticking boxes or ranking and rating each achievement. We know genuine learning happens when you’re happy, unhindered by external pressures, and that is our true focus here, for every child. Our Junior School children have active, varied days. We tend to stick to a timetable, but we also have the freedom and flexibility to break from the norm if it boosts curiosity, creativity and a passion for learning. FIND OUT MORE SENIOR SENIOR SCHOOL Years 9 to 11 Years 9 to 11 are formative years for all students not only academically, but emotionally and socially. Like most mainstream schools, we follow the GCSE curriculum and assessment processes. Our teaching and learning during these years is closely curriculum-led, but we do our best to continuously support our students’ personal passions and interests. Rather than focusing only on the exam results, our aim is to give our students the knowledge and the thinking skills - creativity, problem solving, flexibility, resilience - to take on whatever may turn up on the exams, but also in life beyond. Emotionally and socially, these can be tricky years for all teenagers to navigate and this is where the strong relationships and outstanding pastoral care at Frensham can really give them the chance to enjoy what can be very stressful years. In Year 9, all students take part in a trip to the Peak District. It is unique and beneficial in so many ways. It is technology-free. It is far enough from home for a true independence and self-confidence to grow within each child. They step outside their comfort zone, leave teenage stresses behind and are able to really appreciate the beauty of their environment and the relationships they have with friends and teachers. FIND OUT MORE SIXTH FORM Years 12 to 13 SIXTH FIND OUT MORE Frensham Sixth Form is a really unique place. It offers the freedom and responsibility of a Sixth Form setting with the vibrancy and opportunities of a whole school community. These are the years when students are on the brink of adulthood, readying for their first big step into independence, whatever that might be. A-Levels mean that during these years our teaching and learning is more curriculum-led, but our classes are very small and teachers are able to offer bespoke teaching to the class in front of them, continuously engaging with their students’ personal passions and interests. Rather than focusing purely on exam results, our aim is to give our students the knowledge and the thinking skills - creativity, problem solving, flexibility, resilience - to take on whatever may turn up on the exams, but also in life beyond. The strong relationships and outstanding pastoral care at Frensham can really give students the confidence to be themselves, take things in stride and go beyond their own expectations.

  • Who We Are | Frensham Heights

Frensham Heights is a unique, progressive school. Our mission and values are modern and forward thinking, but we are firmly rooted in our heritage. At Frensham, we leave as we come – as individuals – but in our time here, we become more. We become stronger. Kinder. As the school approaches its centenary, it is clear that Frensham is bigger than any one of us, from our founders to our newest family; it is all of us. We are Frensham. WHO WE ARE OUR VISION: we are empowering tomorrow’s changemakers to find their inspiration today through a transformative education. Vision OUR MISSION. We continue to pioneer a better education, one which: celebrates the individual as part of a nurturing and supportive community; amplifies the voices of our community, encouraging self-expression and sharing of ideas; brims with inspiration from strong relationships with outstanding educators in a stimulating environment. OUR AIMS. We will: provide a nurturing and supportive community that allows all individuals to flourish, with equity, mutual respect and generosity of spirit at its heart; inspire our students’ creativity, intellectual curiosity and passion for learning with a rich progressive curriculum that develops resilient and self-reliant learners, prepared for the modern world; promote education in its widest sense, with stimulating and unique enrichment opportunities; instil and support collaboration, ethical responsibility and community engagement, encouraging our community to make a positive and lasting contribution to the world around them; thrive by securing the future of our school and its communities. OUR VALUES ORIGINALITY OF THOUGHT FRENSHAM EMBRACES CREATIVITY We encourage everyone to foster their boldness and innovation, seeking opportunities locally and globally to discover and bring fresh thinking to our community. SPIRIT OF TOGETHERNESS FRENSHAM NURTURES COMMUNITY SPIRIT Relationships are the foundation of our school and our success, built on genuine mutual respect, compassion and kindness. We embrace freedom with a firm understanding of our responsibility towards our community. RESPECT OF INDIVIDUALITY FRENSHAM CELEBRATES AUTHENTICITY This is a place where you can be the ‘true you’; we pride ourselves on that. We support all to have the confidence to stand for something and be the person you truly want to be. COURAGE TO TRY FRENSHAM FUELS PERSONAL DEDICATION We aspire to be the very best we can be, fully committing to our learning, proactively seeking improvement and working collaboratively for the benefit of the whole community. OUR HERITAGE Frensham Heights was founded in 1925 by educationalists Beatrice Ensor and Isabel King with the aid of a generous benefactor, Edith Douglas-Hamilton. They were passionate about offering an alternative style of education with the child at its heart. A school and a community based on mutual respect, tolerance and generosity of spirit which would educate the whole child – mind, body and spirit. And so it has been ever since. Our founders were not alone in this aspiration. Many other schools were founded around the world during this period as part of the Progressive Education Movement which sought to offer something truly different to the formal, instructional-style of teaching found in most traditional state and private schools. Schools were founded as compassionate communities not only under the strong belief that educating the whole child was essential, but also as democracies with children taking an active part in their education – championing independent thought, exploration and student voice. Even through a war and more recently through a pandemic, Frensham has sought to lead with compassion and with a belief in each child and the good of humanity at its heart. PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION TODAY Although relatively rare in this country, Progressive Schools are thriving around the globe. We are very proud to be a member of the international Progressive Education Network. This is important to us not only because we truly believe this style of education offers children a better chance of happiness and success, but also because it holds us to account as a school, as educators. By promising to uphold not only our school’s founding ethos, but also the PEN principles, we have a better chance of continuing to offer the best possible opportunities for our students. As many more conventional schools catch on to the importance of the ‘soft skills’ and creativity, that have been intrinsic to schools like Frensham from the beginning, we must continue to set an example and pioneer education. We must keep moving forward to provide the most dynamic, inspirational Progressive curriculum that we can. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT PEN

Steven and his mother and brother were taken to Barneveld and then Westerbork. In September 1944 they were sent to Theresienstadt where the whole family miraculously survived. WATCH STEVEN'S TALK TEDxFrensham 2018 The Future is Bright On Saturday 29th September 2018, we hosted our very first TEDxFrensham event — an inspiring day that brought together ideas, voices, and perspectives under the hopeful theme “The Future is Bright.” Throughout the day, a rich mix of speakers shared personal stories, bold ideas, and thought-provoking insights, all designed to challenge assumptions and inspire action. From scientific innovation to social impact, from education to equality, each talk reinforced a shared belief that the future shines brightest when we lead with humanity. 2018 Andrew Fisher Andrew Fisher, former Headmaster of a progressive independent school, asks us to challenge the politicising of education. Why do we accept the constant assessing of our children? Why do we deny it is damaging them? Instead, we blame the increase in anxiety and mental health problems on their lack of robustness and grit. WATCH ANDREW'S TALK Charlie Mackesy Through his passion for drawing, artist Charlie Mackesy challenges us to abandon the idea of being good. Instead have the courage to draw, sing, play from your heart, from your emotions. Laura's interest lies in understanding how human cognition first develops during infancy and early childhood. WATCH LAURA'S TALK Shafina Vohra During her early experiences in teaching, PhD candidate and Psychology teacher Shafina Vohra found herself with a room full of students bored by science. • Music | Frensham Heights

Music is an important part of our curriculum. We want to ensure that every child has the opportunity to listen, perform, explore and enjoy a wide range of music. OUR MUSIC SCHOOL As an important part of our curriculum, we want to ensure that every child has the opportunity to listen, perform, explore and enjoy a wide range of music. We have access to a diverse array of specialist teachers, facilities and instruments allowing us to put practical music making at the heart of what we do. OUR MUSIC CURRICULUM Music is a set part of the curriculum from Nursery through Year 9. Students in these years will have at least one dedicated music lesson per week. The curriculum for these years has been recently redesigned to make it more diverse, more practical, more focussed on SMSC, and most importantly, more fun! We now have a dedicated Junior Music specialist teacher, who will focus on Nursery to Year 3 while the rest of our team will share the teaching of Years 4 – 13. Junior School students in Years 4 - 6 learn a new instrument each year: strings in Year 4, wind/brass in Year 5 and ukulele/piano in Year 6, with our specialist instrumental teachers providing tuition in small groups. There is now more of a focus on Music Production and the use of sequencing software in Key Stages 2 and 3, so that our students can develop skills to prepare them for a future in the Music industry, if they wish. Once students leave Year 9, Music is no longer a compulsory part of the curriculum, but they have many options if they wish to continue. Within the Years 10 & 11 timetable, they can opt for our Music GCSE and at Sixth Form they can study Music A-Level and the new RSL Creative Music Industry course. REGISTER FOR PRIVATE MUSIC & LAMDA LESSONS Outside of the timetable, there are a wealth of opportunities both in a range of performances that run throughout the year (see below) and in our extensive extracurricular clubs, such as: Orchestra, Senior Choir, String Ensemble, Music Production Club, Funk/Soul Band, Composition Workshop, Junior Band Workshop, Junior School Singers and Flute Ensemble. Our aim is to incorporate Music into as many aspects of the school as possible. We have recently purchased a busking speaker to allow our musicians to perform on a whim and there is a jam piano (kindly painted by Year 7 Art students) available outside the Aldridge Theatre. We have also secured a Classical Spotlight at the beginning of each series of Morning Talks which run throughout the year. The Music Department is buzzing with student band rehearsals, and our newly purchased drum kits and amps are getting a lot of use. There are now three rooms that are plug-and-play ready for jamming, and the studio is up and running for recording.
