In a school like Frensham, we want every individual to work hard and feel like the world is their oyster. My sister-in-law Katie very much embodies the ability to give back to her community and work hard to achieve her goals. She wanted to be seen for her amazing skills not the gender she was assigned. She is a real problem solver and team player and these attributes have supported her to achieve her goal of becoming a Firefighter. Below is her story: "I joined the Fire and Rescue Service in 2016 as a Retained Duty Firefighter. I initially applied as I wanted a new challenge, and perhaps more importantly I wanted to give back to the local community that had supported me through my self employment. At the time of application, it didn’t really concern me that I’d be the only woman working on the Fire Station. Life is too short to follow the status quo, and the emphasis in the Fire Service is entirely on your capability as opposed to gender identity. Any reservations that I did have about being the only woman were needless as I instantly felt a part of the gang and quickly realised that I wanted to pursue firefighting as a full-time career. Now five years later, I am a full-time Crew Manager and fortunate to be able to work alongside some incredibly supportive colleagues. My favourite part of the role is probably that no two days are ever the same as we respond to such a wide variety of incidents. It is extremely rewarding to go home after a shift knowing that you’ve been able to have a positive impact in what is often a distressing situation. I firmly believe that the attributes brought into my profession are unique to the individual as opposed to gender, and everyone really does have something to offer. It’s a privilege to be able to promote the Fire and Rescue Service as a career path, and the skillsets and development opportunities available really are limitless. My advice to anybody considering a career in the Fire and Rescue Service would be to absolutely go for it. If it scares you, excites you and makes you grow, then the likelihood is it is going to be a worthwhile adventure! " Have a lovely weekend everyone and remember to follow your dreams! It was an action packed tour from the outset and the girls had a wonderful time. It was so great to be able to offer this kind of experience for the girls who have worked so hard on their netball since being back on the court. On Friday, after a long coach journey, the girls were straight on court. This session was led by Thunder Academy coaches and they focused on the girls attacking play. We then finally got to our rather lovely hotel and after dinner, it was an evening of bowling. The girls were just as competitive here! It was great to see them all having a good time together after being unable to be away with their friends for so long. Saturday was busy from start to finish. It began with a session with the Manchester Thunder players, Shadine Van de Merwe and Ella McCormick who had just come back from a game again Bath. The girls then went straight into a fixture against a local club team. They were one team down so the U15/U16 squad and the U14 teams were first on court, followed by another match for the U13's (against the U14 team) and a mix up for the U15/U16 team playing amongst the club players. Both matches were competitive and made the girls work for every goal. We then went straight to the Trafford Shopping Centre for some retail therapy before a late meal and return to the hotel. Sunday was another training session with the U15 Thunder Academy coach working on their movement and defensive play, before venturing home. Excellent coaching, a wonderful experience and happy memories made! We are looking to run another UK netball tour, weekend commencing 30 September. More details coming soon. 1/30 YEAR 6 MUSEUM Last week, the Ballroom was transformed by our Year 6 children into a beautifully curated Prehistoric Animals Exhibition. The children's handmade 3D sculptures were part of their current 'evolution' topic and sat alongside a handwritten 'museum notice' containing lots of interesting facts. 1/12 REGENCY ART Students in years 7-9 Art and Ceramics lessons last Thursday for Regency Day focused on creating collaborative portraits of significant figures from the Regency period, our focus for World Book Day. Those who had made significant contributions to the world, be it in art, literature, law, leadership and medicine were represented and celebrated. Writing cards, letters and invitations as well as books was a key way to record events and communicate within upper Regency classes, so we took inspiration from this. Students used ‘flourishes’ and calligraphic writing recording quotes, texts, facts and figures, to build and draw out features in these portraits, using dip pen and ink that would have been used at the time. We think they look striking from a distance then reveal more subtlety and information about the individual the closer you get to them. 1/1 TAIKO PERFORMANCE The Aldridge Theatre came alive this week with the energetic beat of Taiko drumming. Wednesday evening's performance was partly a culmination of workshops for students and staff from Frensham Heights and Bordon Junior School. Our Year 2 and 4 and some of our Senior School students took part in the workshops. They were joined at the performance by Taiko Meantime groups from Potter’s Gate and Weydon schools. 1/10 TUESDAY TAIKO FUN FOR THE COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE FACULTY Under the incredibly talented, watchful, and patient eye of Mark Alcock, the faculty got together for a workshop designed to explore the communication skills needed for impactful drumming and to learn more about the cultural heritage of Japanese taiko playing and performance. As absolute beginners, what we may have lacked in raw talent and basic coordination, we certainly made up for in our enthusiasm, collaboration, and a good dash of laughter too! It was a fantastic way to share our faculty spirit.. 1/6 YEAR 4 DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY In Year 4 group 2 made gas masks in DT. They learnt what the gas masks were used for and then built their own masks, closely following instructions. 1/4 YEAR 10&11 HORIZONS On Monday Years 10 and 11 had some powerful talks about substance misuse and harm reduction. Both year groups heard from Zoe Shuttleworth from It Happens Education, who spoke to them separately on this issue. Year 10 engaged really well with Zoe’s talk, asking insightful questions and demonstrating good listening skills. Zoe spoke to them about some of the dangers of alcohol as well as illegal substances and the student feedback was positive. Year 11 heard first from Fiona Spargo-Mabbs whose personal story was powerful and moving. They then heard from Zoe whose expertise was evident in the valuable insights and information she was able to share with them about the dangers of substance misuse and also how their choices and behaviour can reduce the potential for putting themselves in harms way. We really encourage you to take this opportunity to ask your children in these year groups about the talks as way in to having these important conversations with them about this issue. 1/2 YEAR 8 ART - RUST DYE ON FABRIC Natural dyes have been with us for ever. Year 8 try their hand using rusted objects. Many found the process too smelly (vinegar, tea, soya milk). GREENPOWER UPDATE This week we continued to work on the communications, and they are coming along well! To test them we went from one end of the school to the other side to test range and quality, this will be especially important for tracks like Goodwood and Castle Coombe that are larger. Leo took over from what George started last week and further developed the chain guard and took all the measurements for it, so it fits around the axel flywheel and the motor sprocket. This is a very fiddly job and one that needs to be very accurate, so the rear cover fits on snugly. Our engineers worked on getting the front stub axels attached and the font wheels attached too! We almost have a rolling chassis! Team clothing was discussed and Hoodies and Polo T-Shirt colours agreed. During the races we will have a telemetry box fitted to the car, provided by Greenpower that tracks our live progress. Alex researched the company that provides us with this information and got familiar with the races that Frensham Heights competed in last year. (TSL Timing) Next week we hope to get the steering set up, continue with the communications and hopefully finish the chain guard prototype, ready to manufacture in the selected material. Written by Callie Jones 7SVC 1/5 INFORMAL ACOUSTIC CONCERT We had another wonderful acoustic concert this week leading up to our Rock and Pop Gig in a couple of weeks time. Well done to all the talented musicians and singers. 1/8 YEAR 10 GERMAN COOKING This This week in Year 10 German we made Currywurst, a traditional German street food. Their verdict: tastes nice but quite flavoursome! It used a WHOLE bottle of ketchup! 1/5 SPORTS REPORT THIS WEEK'S SPORTS REPORT U11 Hockey Festival On Wednesday afternoon the U11 hockey team had a brilliant afternoon taking part in a festival of hockey. • November Week 1 2023 | Frensham Heights

THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 17th November, 2023 CLICK TO NAVIGATE NOTICES EVENTS FRIENDS OF FRENSHAM THIS WEEK SPORTS REPORT CATERING NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM ANDREW Dear Parents As we approach the end of another busy week, I wanted to thank so many parts of the community for their positive contribution to all our lives. For me the week really started with the Parent Voice meeting, a time when parents and the Senior Leadership team come together to collectively share discussion and thoughts about continually improving Frensham. The meeting was so positive – thanks also to those of you who gave the many, many pieces of positive feedback on the work of staff across the whole school. My particular thanks to Jo Bushill for her work as Chair, she is so professional, clear and driven by the desire to work collaboratively for the betterment of Frensham. I should also thank the Friends of Frensham, ably led by Gayle Horobin, for their fantastic fireworks night. It was organised, busy, fun and safe – a perfect mix from my point of view. The GCSE Drama students performed their assessed pieces mid-week, unfortunately for me it clashed with a Governors sub-committee, I know I would have loved to have seen their work and supported them; definitely will do next time! There was also an Informal Rock and Pop performance by some of the newest voices and singers from Years 7 & 8 and they were all so accomplished and so talented. Names and abilities to watch for in the future. Last night the Sixth Form team hosted a lovely Casino Night. The Year 11 & 12 students were enthusiastically shouting their successes on the ‘tables’ - croupiers flashing the cards and it was just a lot of fun! Thanks to all the staff who shared the work of croupier, looked after the students and set it all up. And now today we have welcomed 35 external students for the Sixth Form entrance day; they were nervous and excited and inquisitive. I am confident we shall see a really vibrant and full Roberts House next academic year. The external students were joined by many of our current Year 11s during the day, as they hosted lunch, led tours and took part in an escape room. Lastly, I have been out in lessons commending individual Year 8 students for their kindnesses, good manners, contributions to volunteering, positivity and engagement with their friends – this is what makes my day, and is something that I truly missed while away; the energy, openness, the kindness and the fun of sharing life with some wonderful children and young adults. Best wishes Andrew NOTICES A MESSAGE FROM NICK SAFEGUARDING UPDATE FROM JO AND JACK We have a date for the evening Online Safety Webinar this half term! This will be at 6pm on Wednesday 6th December. We will send out a proper invite soon. This is a repeat of the coffee morning before half term for any parents who were unable to make that time. We hope to see you online then! This is also an opportunity to talk about the Arts Awards and register your interest. Flic will be in touch with people over the coming week or two to confirm appointments. Please note there is no formal application for entrance into Sixth Form, although it does help us to know your intentions when it comes to planning for next year. This is a rebrand of the Scholarship and Enrichment Programme and I am excited to be leading the programme and providing lots of exciting opportunities for the students. It is a tough event, with students all over the country taking part. We are delighted that the following students managed to earn themselves the following awards: Bronze Max Yr 12 Domnita Yr 12 Olli Yr 12 Max Yr 13 Youmin Yr 13 Morley Yr 13 Miles Yr 13 James Yr 13 Bronze and Best in Year Daniel Yr 12 Silver and Best in Year Arlo Yr 11 Silver and Best in School George Yr 13 Well done everybody! 1/1 MODEL UNITED NATIONS Last Saturday saw nine of our students from Year 9 to Year 12 take part in the RGS Model United Nations. Our teams represented Bangladesh, Spain and South Korea and debated topics from the right to protest to capping global warming in committee and the general assembly. Students greatly enjoyed the intellectual challenge and felt they'd built confidence in both their ability to present and to debate a point alongside a deeper understanding of geopolitics. Well done to the FHS teams, your teachers were very proud of your efforts. 1/6 DIWALI DANCE WORKSHOP We were very excited that West End in Schools Company visited N-6 on Tuesday 14 November to run their Ramayana Dance Workshop - perfect for Diwali 2023 which fell on 12 November! The Ramayana is the most well-known story told during Diwali celebrations. The great Hindu epic about prince Rama and his wife Sita has been shared orally and through dance for centuries. Important cross-cultural concepts like the power of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, freedom over oppression, and hope over despair are all touched upon. Led by a professional West End dancer, the children vividly imagined and physically embodied the different roles, dramatic situations and actions of the main characters in the Ramayana as they retold elements of the great Hindu epic story through dance. By retelling this famous story through dance, children demonstrated Frensham's values of being brave and creative. 1/44 REMEMBRANCE DAY Remembrance 23. This year we commemorated with a focus on 80 years ago and the use of strategic bombing with Operation Chastise, known to most as the Dambusters raid in May ‘43 and Operation Gomorrah on Hamburg in July ‘43. Our focus was on the Ethics of bombing civilians to shorten a war: targeting the factory workers rather than combatants. As a result how bomber command have been remembered. Their memorial at Hyde Park Corner was only opened in 2012 and Arthur ‘bomber’ Harris memorial has been a target of graffiti and derision. With a fatality rate of just under 45% the question had long been asked if Bomber Crew’s sacrifices were worth it. We brought the story up to date with an examination of the current conflicts in the world. All of this was done through the lens of interdisciplinary education, blending music, history, physics, ethics and current affairs with valuable contributions from Kevin Joy; James Casselton, Matt Burns and Charlie Bennett. So many questions can be answered with maths and physics. In this case to explain how Barnes Wallace's Upkeep Bomb, more commonly known as the bouncing bomb, would work. We explored how music is used to manipulate emotions of remembrance. As ever it was a privilege to guide the school through a journey of discovery, questions and reflections: as we remember those who shall not grow old whether in uniform or victims of war. JUNIOR SCHOOL REMEMBRANCE DAY Following on from an assembly, all the classes in Nursery through to Year 3 created their own class wreaths which were placed in the Junior School hall last Friday afternoon while the children listened to some Remembrance poems. Clive very kindly offered to take the wreaths up to the Rowledge War memorial where he placed them there on Sunday morning. 1/2 BOARDING ACTIVITIES Last week some of our younger boarders had the opportunity to design their own outfit using various fabrics and props, they did a great job. Students had the opportunity to play some sports hall games, use the fitness suite, art centre and play some house based fun games. Over the weekend the students went to the cinema. On Saturday there was a trip to Bath and the students who went on this trip had a great time stopping at stone Henge along the way and then seeing the sights Bath has to offer. The car booty sale wasn’t quite as good as the summer months with less stalls to search for goodies, so we will revisit this in the warmer summer months. 1/11 YEAR 5 GUIDE DOGS On Tuesday Year 5 were lucky enough to have a visit from Guide Dogs UK to link with their English poem ‘I Asked the Little Boy Who Couldn’t See.’ Two ladies came and spoke to them, one was a puppy raiser called Ann, who’s trained over 22 Guide Dog puppies, she brought her gorgeous dog Teal, who’d unfortunately not passed puppy training! The other lady was Mel who lives with a sight impairment, she brought her beautiful Guide Dog. Both ladies gave a really interesting insight into the world of the blind and the role that Guide Dogs play in that world. The children were absolutely absorbed by the ladies and their dogs, they listened intently to everything the ladies said and they asked amazing questions. I think they were most impressed by how independent Mel is and the amazing technology which helps her, and how clever the Guide Dogs are. 1/16 YEAR 5 TRIP TO THE V&A Another little blurb if you want it: Last week Year 5 went on a trip to the V&A Museum in London to look at artefacts from Ancient China to link with their topic of Shang Dynasty in class. The children were in awe of all the amazing displays, they did lots of observational drawing and looked closely at what materials would’ve been used for artwork throughout the ages (linking with our Science topic of Materials). The children were really respectful of all the fantastic artwork and of all the other visitors. 1/18 YEAR 5 BUNSEN BURNERS As part of our Science topic of Materials we are focussing on solutions and reversible and irreversible changes. Rich kindly did a Bunsen burner demonstration with Year 5 to show them firstly how Bunsen burners work, and then to show them a reversible change. We created a salt water solution and then Rich used the Bunsen burner to demonstrate how the solution can be reversed back to its original form of salt and water. The children thought it was magic! 1/7 SPORTS REPORT SPORTS REPORT Under 15s Netball v Ditcham Park The U15's had two competitive and physical games against Ditcham Park away. For the first game, Frensham were slow to start and needed to think about their timing and movement. After a regroup, Frensham came back with a succession of goals and took the win with a final score of 8 : 6. This games was quickly followed by a second. Each game was only 6 minutes each way, so the girls knew they had to bring their A game to the court. The second game was much more fluent and the girls played much better as a team, moving the ball quickly into the goal circle. With some excellent shooting by Anna, Sophia and Jemima, the final score of the second game was 13 : 3 to Frensham. Players of the matches were Maleah in defence and Adria in attack. I was super proud of them all today, so much talent and game development made by these girls today. Under 13s Netball v St Edmunds We have continued to be able to field 2 teams in Year 7 netball this term which has been fabulous. The girls have had lots of games, and our courts continue to be very busy on a Wednesday afternoon. This week the u12s took on St Edmunds. Team 1 played first. The improvement in all of the girl’s basic skills such as footwork and movement around the court since the first few weeks is noticeable. The passing around the court has also improved greatly with us just needing to try and cut out the final few loopy passes that appear. The centre passes were much better this week which meant the attackers were able to feed the ball into the circle efficiently to give several shooting opportunities. As ever our shooters were on top form scoring almost every opportunity. Our defence around the court was also strong leading to many turnovers. Team 1 came away with a well-deserved 11 -3 win. I was equally impressed with the improvements in team 2. Their basic skills have also greatly improved over the last few weeks. The footwork and passing are both improving each week, along with defending and turning over the ball. An area we will continue to develop is driving into space to receive the ball as we sometimes struggled to get the ball out of our defensive end. A great effort by all with the girls narrowly losing. Keep up the good work and commitment Year 7. 1/3 Under 13 Football v Alton On Monday evening the U13 football team played a small sided game against Alton on the Astro. This was a great chance to play a competitive fixture in the ECA time. The boys passed the ball with confidence and accuracy and are showing a clear understanding of how each other play. Frensham dominated possession from start to finish and this led to a string of chances that were put away brilliantly. In defence, the team was solid making some great challenges and blocks and playing the ball out from the back to start our attacks. This reduced the opposition to only having long range efforts. Frensham won the game 6-2. Well done all. 1/1 Under 15 Football v Sherfield The U15 football team faced a tough Sherfield side on Tuesday afternoon as they travelled away. The opposition started the game strongly and Frensham were quickly on the back foot as the Sherfield forward slotted home to go one up. Frensham then dug in a started to play the way they have all season with Leo commanding the back four and Adnan running the midfield. Chances came with Jack and Hayden but we couldn't find the cutting edge and went in 1-0 down at half-time. In the second half Sherfield scored two goals in quick succession to put the game beyond reach. However, Frensham didn't stop and gave maximum effort throughout, they dominated the last 15 minutes with waves of attack and Jack V scored following a rebound from a corner but unfortunately we ran out of time. Final score 3-1 Sherfield. 1/2 Waverley Cross Country Trials We took a group of 6 runners to the Waverley District cross country trials at Charterhouse on Thursday afternoon. The weather was wet, damp and miserable, perfect for a cross country run! The junior boys (year 9) ran a course of 4km, one lap of the sports field and then into the wood. The intermediate boys (year 10, 11 and senior) ran a course of 5km, one large lap and a smaller lap. All our runners gave maximum effort and showed a brilliant attitude. All results are recorded electronically, and we await placing. Those in the top standing will go on to represent Waverley borough in county competitions. 1/3 Under 10s Netball v St Edmunds A tricky game for our U9s, as St Eds used the space to their advantage and were quick to pass the ball. In the first quarter, St Eds succeed three goals even though our team were trying to keep the pressure on! In the second quarter, Frensham tried to hold their position on the edge of the D more, to try and slow St Eds but unfortunately, they still managed to succeed another three goals, finishing half time 6-0 down. The third quarter saw our team really working well together and clearing the ball away from our defensive end quickly. Passes were cleaner and sharper, allowing us to make our way quickly to the attacking third with time and space to shoot, enabling Isabel to score two goals! We continued this strong gameplay into the last quarter and made some great interceptions which stopped St Eds from making it to their attacking third, finishing 6-2. Well done to all that played and an extra well done to Woody for being selected as Player of the Match. 1/1 Under 10s Football v Barfield A very competitive game that ended in a 5-4 win to Frensham. Frensham started the game very fast with a few quick goals to go into half time in a comfortable lead. Barfield came back strong in the second half to level the scores however Frensham fought hard to get the final goal that sealed the victory. Amazing goal keeping by Mack, fantastic strong defence by Max, Angad and Ben, awesome distribution by Ethan, Remy and Clark and brilliant work upfront with Oscar and Ethan. Well done boys! Under 9s Football v Ditcham Park Frensham vs Ditcham Park U9 football match. After a very even 15 minutes Ditcham Park managed to score three goals within a couple of minutes resulting in Frensham going in behind into the break. Shortly into the second half Frensham managed to create three early chances with Lex bagging one and Aubrey scoring the other two. With the game moving into the dying moments, Frensham found the back of the net on two occasions resulting in Lex completing his hattrick. Ditcham shortly after got a goal back leaving the last couple of minutes at 5-4. Last attack of the game, Ditcham Park broke free but Thomas with an unbelievable save to keep the score at 5-4. The game finished in a 5-4 victory for Frensham. 1/1 OUTSIDE SCHOOL CATERING FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEWS FROM THE KITCHEN We’re very pleased to introduce Conor to the Chandco family, he joined us at the start of term as Head Chef and has hit the ground running. • HEAD'S WELCOME | Frensham Heights

HEAD'S WELCOME Welcome to Frensham Welcome to Frensham. I have been honoured to lead this wonderful school from 2004 to 2018 and again for this academic year. What you will find as you get to know the school is that it is beautiful physically and philosophically, it offers enviable breadth and depth in its curriculum and non-academic pursuits and above all it seeks to share a generosity of spirit between all members of the school. If you are looking for a school that will know your child and believe in their dreams or ambitions, where people will really listen and give more time and care than the norm; then Frensham is exceptional. If you want to learn alongside your teacher and aim for the best Universities in the country; then our record is proven. If you want a school with 99 years of history and security but every year is an adventure; then you are in the right place. My main role this year is to prepare for my successor Ben McCarey. Ben is currently serving as Headmaster at Holyport College and everyone at Frensham is excited to be working with him. The parents and students and staff all played a role in his appointment process; so he has the confidence of us all to take this wonderful school into its next centena ry. If you don’t already know us, please do come and visit us. We would love to welcome you. Andrew Fisher Meet Ben McCarey

THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 12th May, 2023 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM LAURA Dear parents, As always, it was an incredibly busy week at Frensham, as the MFL exams got underway, the OF Art exhibition started to take shape and the school prepared for its Open Morning on Saturday where over 150 families signed up to attend. This week also saw the conclusion to the catering tendering process. On Wednesday three companies presented their catering vision to an eager panel made up of myself, Nick O-T, Sian and student volunteers from Year 4 to Year 9. The presentations were educational and informative, and students asked some insightful and challenging questions which would not have been out of place on The Apprentice! Nick and I will now take time to review each proposal alongside student, parent and staff feedback before making a final decision. Following my start of term letter that introduced you to the new Leadership Team for September, I thought it would be helpful to follow this up with an overview of 'Who Does What'. As always, thank you for your continued support and have a good weekend. Best wishes, Laura A MESSAGE FROM NICK CLICK FOR NICK'S MESSAGE JS TOWN HALL MINUTES JS TOWN HALL PRESENTATION SAFEGUARDING UPDATE FROM JACK AND JO We wanted to introduce ourselves as the new Safeguarding Leads at Frensham taking over from Becks. The first thing we have to do is pay tribute to all the fantastic work done by Becks over the last twelve years, I am sure that many of those who gave her a standing ovation in the Theatre last week were students and staff who had been helped by her and benefitted from her care and guidance. Safeguarding is one of the most important things that schools do and one part of this is you knowing who you can speak to with any worries or concerns you have about keeping children safe from harm while at school. The simple answer is that this is the same as before – your child’s form tutor is their first port of call, but beyond this Jack is the new DSL (Designated Safeguarding Lead) and so responsible for this area of school life and Jo is taking over as the Assistant DSL. You can also contact us on our school email addresses with any concerns and it may well be us who follow up any concerns you do raise. We are at jacktalman@frensham.org , jodalziel@frensham.org or simply at dsl@frensham.org . Please do get in touch if there is anything you would like to speak to us about. One quick thing to be aware of is that Mental Health Awareness Week starts on May 15th. There are so many great charities that offer support regarding mental health, something that is affecting more and more young people across the country. If this is something you would like to find out more about mental health, www.youngminds.org.uk offers a great deal of support and advice to help us all support our young people and their mental health. Best wishes, Jo and Jack NOTICES SCHOOL NOTICES ASSESSMENT WEEK - 15th to 19th May Please can you make sure your child has the correct equipment for their end of year assessments - pens and pencils and particularly a calculator on Thursday 18th May for their maths (calculator) assessment. In short, researchers compared the examination grades of 15,483 students between the ages of 11 and 16 who participated in music with 97,433 who did not. Academically, they were over 1 year ahead of their peers. Instrumentalists performed at nearly one standard deviation higher on almost all examination outcomes. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM THIS WEEK FOF JUNIOR SCHOOL DISCOS Last week the junior school enjoyed a disco organised by FOF. From nursery to Year 6, kids, teachers and a few parents danced along to firm favourites played by the legendary DJ Lee Russell. With a DJ known for not allowing stragglers at the back, everyone danced their socks off and the ballroom filled with a wonderful energy and happiness. A great afternoon and evening! 1/11 MAN UP: WOMEN WHO STEPPED INTO A MAN'S WORLD The English department welcomed back once more the very talented Dr Clio O’Sullivan, Head of Public Engagement and Communications at Chawton House, for this week’s Morning Talk and she did not fail to engage and inspire students with highlights from her electrifying exhibition based around stories of women who stepped into male roles. By picking up a pen, pistol or sword, they broke with convention to survive and thrive. Out of necessity or choice, to seek glory or escape the fetters of a restrictive life – there were those who kept control over their inheritance, unashamedly sought fame, adopted fake names, took to the high seas, or even joined the army! Disregarding the confines of societal expectation, these pioneering women harnessed their fate and sought control over their narrative. It was an inspiring testament to the female spirit! 1/4 DRAMA SCHOLARS' WORKSHOP We were delighted yesterday to host a workshop for Drama Scholars and those with a passion for Shakespeare and performance. 28 students from Years 8-13 attended a 2 hour specialist workshop with professional actor Gerard Logan, in which they learned new acting skills and ways to approach a script. They left exhausted but exhilarated! We were also thrilled to host Gerard’s solo show “Hauntings” later that evening in Aldridge Theatre, where the audience were captivated by a compelling performance of ghost stories, told by a master craftsman. One audience member said: “What talent! I was totally gripped.” We would like to thank Gerard for his outstanding workshop and performance, and hope he will be able to visit us again before too long. 1/8 GREENPOWER So like any good party the inevitable morning after clear up needs to take place, in our case the Goodwood party left us with bashed up panels and some dings on the cars frame. We set about patching up the car, making sure everything was straight and true and the car was looking (almost) like new and ready for its next tarmac session. The whole team got to have a debrief about how the race went and share ideas on thoughts for the next race. Remember everyone is welcome to come along to the race days and bring banners and flags and shout FRENSHAM at the top of your lungs..... Go on.... become a FROG (FRiends Of Greenpower) you will have a great day. Team profile: Name: David Likes: Racing Dislikes: Camping Favorite subject: DT, of course!! Why I applied: I wanted to be a part of something special with classmates. - Juno, Year 7 1/3 JUNIOR SCHOOL FOREST SCHOOL, OUTDOOR EDUCATION AND BIKEABILITY What an amazing week for the Junior School! Nursery and Reception kicked off the week following deer tracks in their forest school lesson, whereas Reception class started to build the Mega Den using natural resources, in the main forest. Year 1 got crafty and have started to explore weaving using just wool and cardboard. Year 1 did incredibly well and have started to form bracelets. Year 3 were thinking way outside the box, finding a long piece of bark and using this as a nature slide, whilst the boys explored filtration and how effective different natural materials are at filtering dirty water. In addition to this, a few children took part in some ‘Hapa Zome’ otherwise known as leaf bashing to making some amazing patterns on cloths. Years 5 and 6 have been masteting Archery, providing feedback to one another whilst indulging in some fun filled games. Snorkelling club has been a huge success with last week being the first week the junior school have ever tried this club. It was amazing to see the children's confidence grow even within one session. This week the snorkellers cracked ‘finning’. Finall y, it was Year 6’s turn to complete their Level 2 Bikeability. An intensive course where Year 6 begin to further their understanding and competency when riding on main roads. Instructors have been very impressed with the children behaviour, technique, understanding and most importantly safety. Well done Year 6! 1/10 1/8 FARNHAM YOUTH CHOIR Barnaby sang with Farnham Youth Choir’s Senior Choir (FYC) in Hull for the first ever Interkultur International Choir Competition to be held in the UK. The choir competed against choirs from as far afield as Finland, South Africa and Turkey. In total, 27 choirs from 10 countries took part. They competed in the ‘Youth Choirs of equal voices’ category, winning the category trophy with gold! 1/1 YEAR 4 CORONATION For the last two weeks Year 4 have been researching King Charles III and creating information leaflets during English. They then made their own decorations, wrote invitations and organised their own Coronation Party which we held on Tuesday this week. The children worked very hard and all their efforts were paid off with the amazing party! One of the favourite games was 'Mark the Ears on King Charles III' (our version of pin the tail on the donkey!). 1/12 SPANISH & FRENCH PLAYS Last week, the Aldridge Theatre welcomed French and Spanish actors who tour the UK. Most of our linguists were lucky to attend two very different plays. “La Maison Hantée” gave us some goose pimples and played tricks on the mind. How did the blood in a flask turn into water under our eyes? “Mi personalidad” brought laughter amongst the audience. Fernando, in his first year at Uni meets a lot of people: a strange girl who climbs through windows to get into his dorm, a sports addict and a “Save the Planet” protester. Will they make him change? A huge WELL DONE to some of our new actors who joined on stage! Both students and teachers had lots of fun immersing themselves in languages live! 1/6 LOST PROPERTY Here's the current collection of property in the lost & found office. If anything is yours, please contact amylee@frensham.org 1/2 1/5 SPORTS REPORT SPORTS REPORT Under 13s Girls Football Tournament This tournament was a regional Independent Schools event and therefore an excellent standard with many academy players on show. We started the tournament amazingly against Emanuel School with 2 quick goals one from Nell and an amazing solo goal from Matilda. We played really well and ended up drawing our first game 2-2. In the second game we played an incredibly strong Surbiton team who had won all their games. We battled incredibly hard but ended up losing 4-0 but the defending was really resilient and Clara in goal made some great saves. In the last game we needed to win to progress in the tournament against another very strong team, we played really well dominating the early exchanges and Georgia hit the post and also tested their keeper a few times. As the game went on we had to commit more players forward and they scored on the break. I was so delighted with them all especially Jess who played a real captain’s role on the day. Waverley District Athletics Ludo, Charlie and Johnny represented Frensham at the Waverley District Athletics Trials at Charterhouse School on Tuesday afternoon. They were competing for a place to represent Waverley Borough in their chosen events at the Surrey championships in June. Ludo started us off and ran a good race in the 800m finishing 6th in a large group of runners, he set a fast pace but the pack gained on him in the final 200m. Johnny jumped 4.20m in the long jump and finished 3rd in a brilliant run in the 300m. Charlie finished off the afternoon with the 100m and ran a great race close to his personal best. All three boys showed amazing effort and determination and performed brilliantly against many talented club runners in years above them. A very enjoyable afternoon of athletics. 1/3 Fixture Calendar A reminder that you can see all fixtures for the half term on the SOCS sport frensham website, team selection activates on Thursdays the week before matches. FRIENDS OF FRENSHAM NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF FRENSHAM 'TIS THE SEASON OF GIVING FOF Festive Collections Waverley Family Centre- All next week- December 4th- December 8th FOF have again partnered up with the Waverley Family Centre in order to show our support to local families this Christmas. We are collecting gifts for children that the centre can then wrap and hand-deliver to those families in need. If you would like to donate a new, unwrapped gift -perhaps matched to your child’s age, though the centre would welcome gifts for any children aged 0-15. We will have collections every morning next week. Collection points for your kind donations are the Drop off zone or the main car park. Thanks so much for your support! FOF AWARDS One of the fundamental purposes of Friends of Frensham, as a parent association and registered Charity, is to raise funds that can be used for the benefit of the school. Our aim is to enable the school to pay for events, activities or equipment outside the core school budget with the objective of providing funds that will benefit & support the children across both the Junior & Senior School. Awards are granted throughout the year and FOF are delighted to say approval was given at the latest Board meeting for two awards. To enable Greenpower to purchase a branded gazebo that will be used to either shelter the students from the extreme sun / heat (such as at the lotus race) or provide cover from the storms throughout the season. Greenpower has been a huge success at Frensham over the past three seasons. It’s a brilliant ECA and one that impacts on many students that come through the years at Frensham. To enable the Junior School to create a special wellbeing hub in the 4-6 part of the JS by converting a group room space. The room would be for children who may be struggling emotionally at any point in the day, for ELSA Interventions and any other children who may need time and space and a calm environment to be in 1/1 1/1 1/1 THIS WEEK THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM 1/1 1/1 BOARDING ACTIVITIES Last week HH started to get ready for Christmas by making their own Christmas decorations which will be used to decorate the house this year. RH and MH will be catching up this week by starting on the house decorations. Esports was very popular last half term, so Tim offered another session last week which was once again very well attended across the houses. At the weekend RH had a wine tasting and cheese evening, which they all thoroughly enjoyed. MH and HH enjoyed a Friday night big screen movie. On Saturday we had a fabulous trip to Winter Wonderland, the skies were blue, and the sun was shining. A few of our students were very brave and went on some of the biggest rides at the fair. After Winter Wonderland we wondered over to Oxford street for some Christmas shopping and an opportunity to see the start of the Christmas lights coming on. For the more energetic amongst us there was a trip to Ninja Warrior on Sunday which tests many aspects of fitness. Our students certainly did a fantastic job on all the challenges put in front of them. 1/13 MORNING TALK - SØREN KIERKEGAARD Last week's Morning Talk was a fascinating overview of Søren Kierkegaard, recognised as the father of existentialism, and a groundbreaking philosopher. His focus was the responsibility of the individual person to live a meaning and purposeful life based on original Christian values. In today’s world he would have been seen as an influencer and probably been actively communicating via social media, instead of walking the streets of Copenhagen talking to the people he met on the streets. Casper Yr 13, who is a direct descendant of Søren Kierkegaard, spoke on some of the key themes from Kierkegaard’s authorship such as Leap of Faith, Individuality and Subjectivity and The Three Stages of Life. The presentation was followed by a question and answer session where students asked many fascinating questions about Kierkegaard and his life. 1/12 GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO GUNWHARF QUAYS Year 11 Geographers studied the economic, social and environmental impact of Gunwharf Quays on Monday as part of their fieldwork requirement for their GCSE Paper 3. Students collected primary data in the form of pedestrian counts, land use transects and environmental quality surveys alongside photographs to establish whether the regeneration has retained a sense of place. This week students will present their data and analysis their findings. 1/2 MAKING THE CHRISTMAS CHEMISTREE A level chemists set about making our festive chemistree. The students made a range of decorative flasks including blue copper sulphate, a variety of acid/alkalis and indicators, silver mirrors and golden rain to decorate the tree. 1/9 SUGAR AND SPICE AND ALL THINGS NICE! On Tuesday, Nursery and Reception went on another adventure, this time over to the kitchens where the wonderful Connor, our Head Chef, taught us all about pastry and how to make mince pies. We then had a go at making our own: rolling the dough; cutting out our shapes; adding the mincemeat; putting a top on; and adding the glaze and sugar as the finishing touches. They were delicious! 1/16 BEN MCCAREY - WHY FRENSHAM In today’s morning talk, Ben spoke to the senior students about why he is so excited and passionate about becoming the Head at Frensham. He talked about his own education and the influence that has had on him, both the positive and the negative, his aspirations for his own family at Frensham and some of the ideas he has for Frensham moving forward. It’s fair to say that animals played a starring role in his talk! It was wonderful to see the students engaging so warmly with him and asking lots of brilliant questions. Ben will be returning in January to join a Junior School Assembly. Thank you and well done to George Yr 11 who opened the Morning Talk with his stunning performance of Debussy’s Arabesque No.2. SIXTH FORM TRIP TO WINCHESTER CHRISTMAS MARKET 23 6th Formers had a splendid time at the Winchester Christmas Market on Thursday afternoon. Hopefully buying some Christmas presents for parents. It was a real pleasure to spend the time with them, surrounded by the lights, little boutiques, interesting things to eat and the air thick with the smells of Christmas: roasting chestnuts and steaming mulled wine. OUTREACH VISIT TO BRIGHTWELLS Each Wednesday some of the children in Year 7 and 8 give up part of their lunchtime to visit Brightwells Gostry Community Centre in Farnham and spend some time with the senior citizens who visit. The children bring some much loved energy and fun to the centre and the older people who are there to enable their families and carers to have some respite. I am always really proud of them and I think they get a lot from this too. This week they helped make Christmas decorations and put up the tree which really helped everyone to get into the Christmas spirit! 1/3 WINTER SHARING SHOW Thank you to everyone involved in last nights 'Winter Sharing Show'. It was a wonderful evening with an electric atmosphere! Thank you to the wonderful cast (of 150 students!!!) who shared some of their beautiful work from lessons and ECA's. To the staff who supported on the night and for all the masterminds behind the madness that is putting on a show! If you did enjoy last night, there is so much more from the Performing Arts coming your way! 'We Will Rock You' is next week with performances on the 7th, 8th and 9th of December at 7pm across each evening and a 14:30 matinee on the Saturday. Plus the wonderful junior school performances of Baubles and Cinderella Rockafella! Get your tickets now! Photos by Iola Yr 11 1/69 FARNHAM ASSIST AFTERNOON TEA Year 4 planned a "Gaming" afternoon Tea where they chatted merrily and played board games and card games with local Farnham elderly residents, including one gentleman whose realtive had been a gardener at the school in year gone by and parents or one of our receptionsists! With help from a few older students, today, everyone was a winner as the piano, played, children sung, everyone chatted and delicious cakes and scones were eaten! Hi Lynn What a lovely afternoon! Thank you so much to you and everyone at Frensham Heights for the making the afternoon so special. All our ladies and gentlemen really enjoyed it and some have already been asking about the summer event and wanting to book. As word gets around how lovely it all was I’m sure I will be inundated with requests for the next one. The singers and pianists were excellent and all our people enjoyed playing games with the younger ones, what a great idea. We will look forward to seeing you at the lunch on 3rd December, as discussed please let Fiona know your numbers. Thank you again and best wishes. Angela Angela Weston Activities Officer Farnham Assist 7 St Georges Yard Farnham GU9 7LW 1/5 YEAR 10 DISSECTIONS Y10 have been learning about how oxygen and other nutrients are transported around their bodies, and all got stuck in to a heart dissection with great enthusiasm! 1/2 A BIG THANK YOU FROM SMILE SLEIGH! On Thursday, all the donations given by Frensham Heights were passed to the central sorting location for distribution. Your donations helped to give gifts to 523 children either in outreach services or refuge and 129 women. So 7SVC would like to say thank you all so much for your donations. We are super grateful for all donations we have received. All of the kids will be super delighted about the presents they will get this year and your donations have made a difference. Lola, Cess and G (7SVC) 1/2 SPORTS REPORT SPORTS REPORT Under 13s Football v Duke of Kent The U13 football team hosted Duke of Kent for a brilliant afternoon of football on Wednesday. The opposition were a physical side and inside the first 10 minutes it was clear that they were going to press and harass Frensham. Frensham started slow and struggled with the press, however they dug in and things clicked and they played their brilliant passing brand of football that they’ve been showing all season. Frensham dominated the possession and create several chances which Alfie and Richie finished off to give Frensham a 2-0 victory. The opposition tried to fight back but Tomos pulled off a couple of brilliant saves and Harrison cleared off the line brilliantly after the forward rounded the keeper to save a sure goal. Well done all. Under 15s Netball v Duke of Kent Frensham's U15's put on another fantastic display of netball against the Duke of kent school this week. We took a while to warm up, with some erratic passes and loose balls which resulted in a number of turnovers. They picked it up though and with some tight defence and improved passing and movement as a team, the girls finished every quarter ahead. DOK worked hard though and fought back in the third quarter. Frensham responded with some small changes and they ran away with the win in the fourth. The final score was 25-15 to Frensham. Under 12s Netball v Farnborough Hill This game was always going to be a challenge for Frensham, against a strong school. Frensham worked hard throughout, with some amazing flying intercepts by Lila and Becky, which slowed down the Farnborough attack. Poppy worked tirelessly, moving the ball into the circle, resulting in a number of shots on goal by Tilly and herself. Anya moved well into space to bring the ball down the court with Lila. The defence triangle of Becky, Abi and Grace was a strong trio against a good Farnborough side. Overall, it was a good performance by all with some excellent elements of netball now being mastered. The score line did not match the efforts or the game itself. It was a 8-2 win for Farnborough on this occasion, but the whole team should be very proud of their performance. Under 9s Netball vs Churcher's What a great game for the U9s! A fresh but bright afternoon presented almost perfect playing conditions and every member of the team arrived enthusiastic. The girls were ready to put the skills they had learning in training to the test. The first quarter saw an early goal from Eleanor, thanks to some quick decisions and great passing up the court. The opposition managed to score their first goal just before the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, Frensham marked well and showed a strong defensive performance but unfortunately Churcher's made some great interceptions in our defensive third which allowed them to score two more goals, finishing at half time 3-1. The third quarter saw the team seeking out their players in a quicker fashion which allowed them to put the pressure on, leading to the team having time to create space and rush in for the ball. In the final quarter, Churcher's were quick to score, but Frensham were hot on their heels with a lovely goal from Amelia, finishing the game 4-2. The team were elated to have scored some goals and it was brilliant to see how they have progressed! Under 10/11s Netball triangular v St Edmunds and Farlington The U11 team had an excellent match against St Edmund's and Farlington. In cold conditions they moved the ball well and worked on some of the things that they have been working on in training. All the hard work paid off with some lovely through court play and 2 wins. Edith was selected as player of the match in the first game (3-1 win) with some solid defending and great interceptions. Ruby was selected as player of the match against Farlington for her supportive play on the edge of the circle. She worked really well with the 2 attackers getting the ball nearer the post to create better shooting opportunities - this paid off with another win (3-1) after going down 1-0. Well done to everyone who played. Some great results. The U10 team played their best game of the season in their games against both St Edmund's and Farlington. With only five players, substitutions was not an option and the girls took this in their stride. Rather than starting the game at a slow pace in the cold weather, the team started strong with all players keenly marking the opposition. The team created some really fluid game play that saw an early goal from Emma. Frensham defended well and made some great interceptions, but unfortunately St Eds managed to score 2 goals in our first game against them. Our second game, against Farlington, saw the positions change slightly and the team looked calm and collected on court. The girls showed textbook understanding of their recently learned skills of driving out and then in again to create space. This produced some quick and efficient passes, allowing two further goals from Emma, one goal from Charlotte and one from Amelia. Our final game was against St Ed's and the girls were really showing dominance on the court. They continued to create space and ample opportunities to make their way up court, seeing two final goals from Charlotte, who was also chosen as player of the match! 1/1 Under 18s Football v More House An absolute classic for the Under 18s on Monday evening against local rivals More House. A close encounter throughout and one of small margins. The boys worked hard and had the edge in the first half, creating some good chances against a strong goalkeeper for More House. Curtis, Arlo and Luke combined well to create some half chances. We were comfortable at the back for the majority with Morley and Ben combining well. Until a classic counterattack goal from More house put them in front. Adnan injected some pace through the middle and James P and James V were both getting forward well. It looked like it was not meant to be for Frensham, and the game drew to a close until some last attacking play resulted in not one but two goals. Firstly, Arlo scored a great volley from a corner, in off the post and with minutes to spare Luke executed a great solo finish to win the game for Frensham. More house edged the first game a few weeks back 1-0 so will do everything we can to organise a trilogy match! Under 14s Football Mayville Tournament A chilly afternoon at Mayville on Tuesday but a great competition that Frensham were very competitive in. In out group with host Mayville, Meon Cross, More House and Boundary Oak. All the games were 7v7 and so close games on small pitches. Chances would be difficult to create and so the taking these when they arrived would be essential. Lots of good performance from Harry C in midfield, Negu in Defence and Zak at centre forward to name a couple. After the group stages we qualified for the quarter finals and were up against Boundary Oak A. This was our best performance by far and dominated from the first minuet and create chance after chance, the ball would just not drop in. As a result, the game went to penalties and unfortunately the boys lost 3-1 on penalties to not progress to the semi-finals. Under 13s Football Mayville Tournament The boys were a real credit to the school throughout the afternoon at Mayville in freezing conditions. In every game they worked incredibly hard defensively and also created opportunities going forward. We lost our first two group games by one goal to nil but then won our last group game 1 - 0 from a great strike by Leo who was superb all afternoon. This meant we had to play the winner of the other group in the quarter final. They were significantly bigger than us but we stuck to it and managed to take the game to penalties. Jack and Leo scored their penalties and Johnny in goal saved both opposition penalties which saw us get to the semi final. The same scenario played out in the semi but this time we lost on penalties. It was an amazing afternoon. A special mention for Johnny in goal who was outstanding all afternoon. Under 11s Football v Duke of Kent The U10 and 11 mixed team play against two Duke of Kent teams in a mini tournament. In the first game there was fantastic defensive play by Oscar in goal particularly as this is not his normal position. Brilliant defence by Angad and Crofton and superb link play by Max in midfield. Upfront Albie and Betty found the going tough to find scoring opportunities however never gave up. When called upon Ben was awesome in goal, Cassia was strong in defence and Lylee was excellent in a dual role of defence and midfield with Frensham coming up short 3-0 to the Duke of Kent team. In the second match Frensham played brilliantly with two goals from Albie and one from Betty to win 3-1 against the second Duke of Kent team, all the players mentioned above were exceptional in helping to create these goals to win the second match. On the other pitch, the first 10-mins was very even, with both sides battling it out. DOK managed to score on a counterattack. In reaction, Frensham had some chances from some quick link up between Louis and Rudy but neither were able to put the ball in the net. Frensham were punished for small errors in defence which resulted in 4 more DOK goals. Well played both sides! LOST PROPERTY OUTSIDE SCHOOL IN THE LOST PROPERTY OFFICE... THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 13th October, 2023 CLICK TO NAVIGATE NOTICES EVENTS FRIENDS OF FRENSHAM THIS WEEK SPORTS REPORT CATERING NEXT WEEK NOTICES A MESSAGE FROM NICK SAFEGUARDING UPDATE FROM JO AND JACK This week Jack attended Farrer's Annual Safeguarding Conference which had a focus on online safety. We were pleased to feel that we were ahead of the curve with most of the issues and topics that were covered although one new term did catch our eye - 'Digital Agency'. The speaker suggested that this should be the focus of online safety education in schools, encouraging students to take control of their online lives and give them the tools to manage this effectively. This is the approach that we try to take in much of what we do at Frensham - giving students freedom with responsibility and helping them learn from any mistakes they make on the way so that they grow into young adults capable of having agency over their own lives. Look out for this new buzzword in their online safety lessons going forward! AUDITIONS FOR FRANKENSTEIN - YEARS 9 TO 13 Click here for the audition pack. STUDENT EXPERIENCE REVIEW Next week (Mon 16th-20th October) we will be trialling a new initiative with year 8, our student experience review. It will involve a teacher tracking each tutor group for one day of the week to observe their daily experiences. We want to understand what it’s like to be a student in Year 8; what’s working and what we can do better from both an academic and pastoral viewpoint. Staff will also be observing Year 8 lessons throughout the week, alongside student book reviews to get a picture of our feedback process and a student survey so we can listen to student views. All of this information will be collated and reviewed on the Friday and we hope allow us to share good practise and make positive changes. If this is a success, we plan to roll it out across the school. PARENT WEBINAR: STARTING THE CONVERSATION - TOOLS FOR TALKING ABOUT MISOGYNY WITH OUR TEENS - SAVE THE DATE! This year we are working with Bold Voices to launch the Ambassador's programme in Year 12: students who have opted to be involved will be learning about misogyny and gender-based violence, and working on projects to help to tackle this. As part of this scheme, we are delighted to be able to offer two information webinars for parents on these topics. The first of these, on how to talk about misogyny with teenagers, is coming up soon, on 30th November, at 6pm (hosted on Zoom). We are able to offer 30 live places on this webinar, and the recording will be available for one month following the event for those who wish to view it at a later date. The second webinar, (The Digital Divide: Tools for talking about online sexual harassment with our teens) will run in March. If you would like to attend the first webinar live then please keep an eye out for the details. Once Bold Voices have released the information and sign up link we will share them with you in the newsletter. LIVE PARENT WEBINAR: HOW YOU CAN HELP PREPARE YOUR CHILD FOR EXAMS Sign up for the session here Tuesday 17th October 6:00-7:00pm - Elevate Education will be hosting their next parent webinar on exam preparation. THE MURRAY PARISH TRUST CHARITY BALL Please click here to find out about the charity ball. Two of our Year 9 parents are holding a charity ball on November 18, 2023 and there are still a few tables left to sell. This year The Murray Parish Trust is focusing on children’s mental health, fundraising to deliver projects which aim to improve early and innovative interventions. The combination of Covid-19, poverty and money worries, plus social media, school and other societal pressures have had a devastating effect on the mental health of our young people, and we have now reached a crisis point. Around 1.5 million young people – that’s one in 5 children and teenagers – are now likely to have a mental health problem: a shocking 60% increase over the last 5 years. Or to put it another way, 6 children in every classroom are currently struggling with their mental health. All students had an amazing experience and one we hope to do again soon!!! 1/9 GREENPOWER INTERNATIONAL FINAL Last Sunday 8th October we competed in the International Finals for Greenpower, as usual with race days we had a bright and early start but that didn’t stop the team from being on top form. In the morning we had a few struggles with getting tyres to the correct pressures and finalising race strategy but they got smoothed out pretty quickly. The weather was lovey, and we were set for a brilliant day of racing. Those who are familiar with the concept of Greenpower will know that at the finals the first race is a qualifier to determine your grid position for the final race. Our drivers (David, Elijah and Edward) on the day took the challenge and faced it head on which meant we placed 2nd which meant that we had a great opportunity to start well in the last race of the season. After a quick lunch break it was time for the grid parade which is something that has never been done before, but the team again, were amazing with just how organised they were - even when challenged with a giant banner! 15 minutes later the race started and yet again our drivers were amazing, it was only in the final 15-20 minutes that we jumped from 9th kit car to 7th and then again from 7th to 3rd kit car but that wasn’t enough and we ended up placing 4th overall in the F24 category by only seconds. The team did their best on the day and important lessons will be learned and passed onto the next keen Y7s that want to be part of this brilliant project, we had a superb day. There are a few special thankyous to be given: Firstly, to the supporters, then parents, friends and family, last years team who came to support us and Alex in Year 9 who has come to most races and meetings, and then finally the teachers behind it, Giles and Neil. This has been such an amazing experience to be a part of and has helped develop so many different skills like communication, teamwork, problem solving, leadership and management, creativity and time management – I’m sure I’ve missed loads of others too!! During the remainder of this term, we will debrief properly from the final and start to dismantle the car and prepare it for the new team. Look out Year 7s – we’ll see you in a notices in January! Written by Juno (Year 8) 1/13 ROBERTS HOUSE BILLIARD TABLE Roberts House now has a new, very smart billiard table to this willing group team of Sixth Formers! 1/2 YEAR 5 PINWHEELS In year 5, we created pinwheels as part of our stem well being project. It encouraged children to breathe out deeply to try to rotate the pinwheels, which in turn, helped take a deep breath in and that in turn improved oxygen in the body for wellbeing. 1/5 FEEL GOOD WEEK The Junior School finished off their Feel Good Week with a massive Wake Up Shake Up in the sports hall. 1/25 BATTLEFIELDS TRIP Year 10 and 11 historians are currently midway through the 3 day battlefields trip to France and Belgium. It is wonderful to return after an enforced Covid break of nearly 5 years. The GCSE students are brilliant. They are gaining so much from the application of their knowledge to the locations of their studies. Deeply moved by the cemeteries; appreciating the kinaesthetic experience of the trenches. Kevin has been keen to demonstrate the application of physics to history: lens, forces and conservation of momentum. Visits to the V weapons factory at La Coupole, which despite epic tiredness, the students dug deep and found the resilience to explore the exhibits. Menin gâte tonight and the famous Leonides chocolate shop (who send us a Christmas card because we are such good customers) and Somme tomorrow . The coach has been entertaining too, with jokes a plenty and war movies. Well done everyone…. So far 1/31 SPORTS REPORT SPORTS REPORT UNDER 14s NETBALL v WEYDON This week u14s played away at Weydon. The girls played very well throughout the game with a slight dip in concentration in the second quarter. Despite this dip the girls were still ahead at half time. In the third quarter our girls upped their game and pulled away and continued their excellent play into the 4th quarter. The girls came away with a well deserved 22-11 win. 1/1 U11/10 SWIMMING v ROWLEDGE We could not have asked for a better afternoon for Monday's swim gala with Rowledge. Our Year 5 and 6 students swam valiantly against two teams from Rowledge. It was great to have so many people wanting to swim different races this week and it created some exciting competition. In the U10 category, Isabel came 1st in Backstroke and Crofton came 1st in Freestyle. In the U11 category, we saw a 1st from Louis in Backstroke, a 2nd place for Ayla Sandlin in Breaststroke and a 1st place for Ava in both Freestyle and Butterfly! Great work to all who took part in this, it was very close in each race! U11/10 NETBALL v DUKE OF KENT The U10s were markedly improved this week, playing as more of a unit and working cohesively. This saw us gaining possession of the ball more easily and making our way to the attacking third regularly. The players enjoyed the added assistance that playing 7-a-side brings and grew to understand their positions. We had multiple attempts at shooting, but a well-matched Duke of Kent team were quick to intercept at the last minute. In the first quarter, Duke of Kent scored 3 goals, but this did not stop our team from working hard to dominate the second quarter in which they scored two goals (Woody & Clara). The final two quarters were fierce with a further goal from Duke of Kent. The U10s managed to score a 3rd goal (Woody) to finish strong! The under 11s worked really hard against a much taller opposition that makes a big difference in the younger years in netball. The girls got off to a shaky start but certainly grew into the game and improved as each quarter developed. In the opening quarter the team were up against a lot of pressure but were resilient in closing down the opposition and making the game difficult for Duke of Kent. Star player throughout was Edith who was zoned in and was relentless in intercepting the opposition and breaking down there attacks. Aneela and Elsa shared the role of GK which was a difficult task against tall shooters but did a sterling job in rebounding and having arms up as a distraction when shooting. As the girls gained confidence in the game they were more comfortable going forward and with some quick passing from Isla and Ruby we started to get into the final third more often and have the opportunity to score some points. A 3-0 defeat on this occasion but lots to take forward into the next match. UNDER 15s NETBALL v WEYDON The U15's were away to Weydon this week. It was always going to be a challenging game and Weydon were quick to show us how good they were. Frensham worked hard to match their speed and movement and after the first quarter, Frensham had taken the lead. Weydon showed us their drive and determination though, and quickly worked hard to take the lead. Our game lacked composure today, and we rushed the ball, causing simple errors. By the fourth quarter, the Weydon side had ran away with a win, fighting for every ball. The final score was 22-14 to Weydon. Plenty to learn from in preparation for our next game. Players of the match were Maleah and Jemima. Onwards and upwards! 1/1 UNDER 15s ‘B’ FOOTBALL v THE ROYAL A really great performance from this team to make it back-to-back wins playing a really positive attacking brand of football. The opening ten minutes we created a huge number of chances but the woodwork and the royals goalkeeper were keeping us out. Some highlights included Max, playing only his second game was a relentless pest for the opposition, always at them when they had the ball and battled superbly well throughout. Captain Tibor led the tea by example with his calm and physical display at the back and finally a host of great goals finally arrived. On the scoresheet this week was Milo with a brace, Yash, Rafi and a brace for Talha secured a comprehensive 6-2 victory, well done! UNDER 14s NETBALL v ALTON The u14s faced Alton last week. We were missing a couple of our regular players and it did make a difference with girls filling in positions they wouldn’t normally play. During the first quarter Frensham matched Alton goal for goal with the score 5-5 at the end of the first quarter. At the start of the second quarter the game was very scrappy with lots of balls turned over by both teams. The girls finally settled into a rhythm and the game became more controlled. In the second half Alton really upped their game and were better at chasing the ball down. This led to them having a larger number of shooting opportunities. These opportunities were rarely missed, and Alton pulled away from us. The girls fought hard until the end of the game where sadly on this occasion Alton were victorious. Well done to all the girls. UNDER 12s NETBALL v THE ROYAL The u12s played two games away at The Royal last week. We were lucky enough to take away almost two full teams. It is great to have so many students keen to play netball this season. We are still finding the best fit in terms of positions for the teams however we found a good fit on Wednesday against The Royal. Our attack was great with Poppy, Juliette and Tilly scoring 20 goals between them. Anya, Lila, Evelyn, Becky, Tusia and Abi did a great job bringing the ball through the court and turned over a number of balls for us which created more attacking opportunities. Annabelle, Lili and for the last quarter Abi did a great job in defence. The girls defending was tight and meant The Royal didn’t have a lot of shooting opportunities. Frensham won both of their games winning 7-1 and 13-5. Well done to everyone who played. UNDER 13s FOOTBALL v THE ROYAL On Wednesday The Royal brought over two small sided teams to play in a tournament with four mixed Frensham teams from year 7 and 8. Each team played 5 games in a league format to crown the overall winners. The games were played in a brilliant spirit with the teams taking responsibility to organise themselves into line ups, formations and lead each other through the competition. The Frensham non bibs took the victory securing 12 points from a possible 15, finishing just one point above Frensham Green. Well done to all who took part. UNDER 9s FOOTBALL v DUKE OF KENT The U9s continued their impressive start to the season remaining unbeaten after their third game week. Duke of Kent were the visitors this week and they brought over 2 teams to create a triangular. In the first game Frensham won 2-0 with Lex scoring and Thomas making some brilliant saves to keep a clean sheet. In the second game Frensham won 3-1 with Jess and Lex scoring. In both games the team showed they are getting a greater understanding of spacing around the pitch and passing and moving rather than holding onto the ball too long. In defence Frensham put their bodies on the line and tackled brilliantly, led by Magnar who was then able to find a pass brilliantly into midfield to start our attacks. Both Delilah’s, Ezra and Jess did not give the opposition any time on the ball to settle and they all played brilliantly. Next week we have our first away game of the season against St Hillary’s, we are looking forward to it. 1/1 OUTSIDE SCHOOL FRENSHAM KITCHEN CATERING ALDRIDGE CAFÉ Don’t forget to pop in to the Aldridge café, the opening times are Mon-fri 8-10am & 3-5pm (4.30pm on Friday) We sell fresh pastries, toasted paninis, freshly made cakes and coffees, hot chocolate and cold drinks. Students enjoyed sprinting 100m and then comparing their 10m split times to Usain Bolt's and exploring links to gradients and speed in the classroom. They produced some lovely project work on distance/time graphs and had lots of fun in the process. Well done Year 8. 1/10 SPORTS REPORT CHRISTMAS LAVA LAMP PRACTICALS KS3 groups enjoyed some fun festive practicals in the final week of term with included making lava lamps using oil, food colouring, and Alka-Seltzer tablets. 1/5 CHRISTMAS POSTCARDS Students from Year 4 created cards for the Gostrey Brightwells Charity. These cards will delivered to elderly people’s homes with their mobile meals. 1/6 YEAR 5 GINGERBREAD In Year 5 we have been having a creative week, between Christmas play rehearsals. The children made Gonk decorations, which brightened up the classroom. They also moulded individual models out of polymer clay, then used glycerine, water and glitter to create their own beautiful snow globes. 1/15 JUNIOR SCHOOL CROSS STITCH In the Junior School this week, children in Years 4,5 and 6 late stay had a chance to learn how to cross stitch. They made some beautiful Christmas decorations. We were so impressed with the patience and perseverance shown by the children, and we think their hard work paid off! 1/6 SPORTS REPORT Under 15s Girls Football v Lingfield (ISFA Shield) The final game of the season came from the girls as they continued their journey in the ISFA shield round of 32. We had a home match against Lingfield and it was a classic battle with little between the two sides throughout. Frensham started well and were on the front foot and were able to create a few half chances for Jess and Jemima, but nothing to break the deadlock. Lingfield grew into the game and had some chances themselves but a couple of fine stops from Jamie in goal ensure the game remained even. Then a great chance taken from Georgia gave Frensham the lead after some strong and confident play by Jemima being able to play the ball in behind for the goal from Georgia. A lapse of concentration shortly before half time allowed Lingfield back into the game and the teams were even 1-1 at half time. A fast and aggressive start in the second half saw Frensham really go for it, chasing every ball especially Holly and Jemima who were relentless. An opportunity came for Georgia from 25 yards out with the ball bouncing she had a pop at goal and the looping strike managed the find its way into the goal to give Frensham the lead. That was the final goal of the match as the team confidently saw out the remaining 20 minutes of the match, a special mention to Cydney, Abbie and Freya in defence who main endless recovery runs and tackles to see out the victory. Well done everybody!
