- Boarding | Frensham Heights
Each of our boarding houses has its own dedicated residential team and, as the children grow up through the school, there is a natural progression of increased freedom matched with increased responsibility. Boarding at Frensham, like the whole school, is built on a very firm basis of mutual respect. BOARDING Each of our boarding houses has its own dedicated residential team and, as the children grow up through the school, there is a natural progression of increased freedom matched with increased responsibility. Boarding at Frensham, like the whole school, is built on a very firm basis of mutual respect. Students are probably given more freedom than in other schools, but with that comes greater responsibility and ultimately a better understanding of how to live and behave beyond the school and home environments. We have a mix of UK and international students with at least 15 different nationalities and we ensure everyone has the opportunity to take part in our many after school and boarding activities as well as regular weekend trips and visits. QUICK LINKS YEARS 7 TO 9 YEARS 10 & 11 SIXTH FORM ACTIVITIES OPEN EVENTS A NATURAL BALANCE Within our beautiful environment, Frensham is able to offer the perfect natural balance of home and structure. During the day, boarders are indistinguishable from day students, sharing the same classrooms, day houses and lunchroom, but as the day ends they head to one of our three boarding houses. Our boarders enjoy the experience of moving through Hamilton House (Years 7-9) and Main House (Years 10 and 11) and by the time they get to Roberts House in the Sixth Form, they are ready for a little more freedom and independence. All boarding houses are coeducational. Boys and girls have separate rooms and corridors with shared social areas. Tech and WIFI are monitored and phones are stored away at night for the younger years. Prep time is set and a huge range of activities are organised from basketball to cooking plus shopping and cinema trips. Weekends, in particular, follow the flow and pattern that is family life with busier Saturdays and lazier Sundays. Throughout all there is a natural progression of what is expected from the youngest through to the oldest – a sliding scale of structure, freedom and responsibility. PASTORAL Our boarding houses are like big families – full of sisters and brothers, chatter and laughter, excitement and calm. It can’t be home, but it’s as close as you can get without being at home. In all of our boarding houses, great emphasis is placed on the creation of a caring community which shares a philosophy based on mutual respect, enthusiasm and enjoyment of each other’s company and achievements. We aim to develop tolerant, friendly attitudes and good personal relationships. In school, we try to minimise the distinction between boarding and day students, and we welcome students from around the world. OPTIONS As with most things at Frensham, we understand that one size never fits all so we have a few different boarding options to cover whatever works for your family: FULL BOARDING Full boarding is what it says on the tin - 7 days a week. WEEKLY BOARDING Weekly boarding is Sunday pm to Thursday pm. FLEXI BOARDING Flexi boarding is the same three days every week. OCCASIONAL BOARDING Occasional boarding is adhoc on a first come, first serve basis - 2 days equivalent per week/per term for Years 7-9 and 1 day for Years 10 and up. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Our boarding houses include many students from different cultures, nationalities and backgrounds. We welcome boarders from overseas, and believe that the diversity of ideas, experiences and perspectives they bring enriches our boarding community. Our experienced house parents get to know all of our residential students really well and they benefit from a very special home-like setting. Our less formal environment also lends itself to making life long friends so students will go home knowing that their Frensham experience will continue well into the future. MORE ABOUT INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS YEARS 7 TO 9: HAMILTON HOUSE Hamilton House is home to our youngest boarders in Years 7 to 9. Students and residential staff live, study, socialise and relax together in what feels far more like a family home than a boarding house. Coeducational, in keeping with our ethos and like all our boarding houses, boys and girls sleep on separate floors – both alarmed to make sure there is no confusion over which students should be where and at what time. They share common areas for a wide variety of boarding activities - movie and games nights, cookery, yoga and more - not to mention coming together each evening to get their prep done. HAMILTON HOUSE BOARDING BOOKLET HAMILTON YRS 10 & 11: MAIN HOUSE Main House is our coeducational boarding house for students in Years 10 and 11, with girls on one side, boys on the other and common rooms in between. It is a welcoming house where teenagers can live, study, socialise and relax together. Students are given a bit more freedom and with that more responsibility. There are clear expectations about behaviour and respect in a shared living environment. All our boarding houses rely on this strong basis of mutual respect. Boarders can access the house at lunch time and after school, but they are encouraged to be out socialising with day students and taking part in clubs and fixtures. There is allocated quiet time for prep and often house activities or inter-house activities are organised such as football, cooking or a movie night. MAIN HOUSE BOARDING BOOKLET MAIN HOUSE BOARDING BOOKLET MAIN ROBERTS SIXTH FORM: ROBERTS HOUSE Roberts House is our Sixth Form hub. It is much more than a boarding house as Sixth Form day students also have studies here. Sixth Form notices, social events, study sessions and some classes also take place here. It is somewhere students can go during free periods to study and find a bit of peace and quiet. Male and female students have single rooms on separate sides with common rooms in between. Central to Roberts House is Colette, the matron, who offers a friendly ear, a comforting hug or just a cup of tea when the students need a bit of emotional support. Sixth Form boarders can take all their meals in the dining hall, but there are also two kitchens in Roberts House which they can use. Sixth Formers have more freedom than the other boarders - which comes with more responsibility. ROBERTS HOUSE BOARDING BOOKLET ACTIVITIES Boarding life begins when the school day ends. It obviously can’t be fun and games all the time, but evenings and weekends are all about striking the right balance between structured activities, homework and relaxation. Working around prep time and quiet time, evenings and weekends can see boarders really taking advantage of the school site and its facilities. COMMON EVENING ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: • basketball in the sports hall • running/walking in the woods • cooking and arts and crafts • movie and quiz nights We also sometimes go off site for dinner, bowling or the cinema. We don’t have Saturday school, so there is time for a broad range of activities and trips. COMMON WEEKEND ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: • shopping trips to London and Guildford • trips to leisure centres and water parks • supermarket runs to stock up on tuck • trips to restaurants and cinemas • photography and art workshops • sports workshops • high ropes and mountain biking • movie nights and discos In our aim to have our boarding life mirror family life as much as possible, we tend to have a fairly busy Saturday followed by a quieter Sunday. BOARDERS WEEKEND At the beginning of every school year, we hold a Boarders Weekend when all boarders, full and weekly, stay for an activity packed weekend designed so that everyone - boarders and staff - can get to know one another. It is always a really wonderful introduction to the school and our boarding community. ACTIVITIES
- OUR CENTENARY | Frensham Heights
September 2025 marks 100 years of Frensham Heights, a whole century of doing things a little differently. What once felt bold, even revolutionary back in 1925, now feels simply right. A way of learning and living that puts children at the heart of everything. This year, we’re taking time to celebrate all that makes Frensham, Frensham. 1/10 Our Centenary September 2025 marks 100 years of Frensham Heights, a whole century of doing things a little differently. What once felt bold, even revolutionary back in 1925, now feels simply right. A way of learning and living that puts children at the heart of everything. This year, we’re taking time to celebrate all that makes Frensham, Frensham. We’d love you to be part of it. Come along to one of our Centenary Events, share the story of an Old Frenshamian for our 100 OFs campaign, or explore the beautiful gifts created by our community in the Centenary Gift Shop. However you join in, you’ll be helping to celebrate 100 years of curiosity and creativity. There’s something special about how Frensham began. Three women, full of courage and vision, wanted to do things differently, to break free from the stiff traditions of Victorian education. They chose this beautiful spot, with its wide skies and rolling Surrey Hills, as the place to bring their ideas to life. They knew that children need to move, to explore, to imagine, to ask questions and to be truly heard. That spirit of freedom and curiosity still shapes us today, just as it did when Frensham first opened its doors in 1925. Our Founders Frensham Heights was founded in 1925 by educationalists Beatrice Ensor and Isabel King with the aid of a generous benefactor, Edith Douglas-Hamilton. As Joint Headmistresses, they were passionate about offering an alternative style of education with the child at its heart. A school and a community based on mutual respect, tolerance and generosity of spirit which would educate the whole child – mind, body and spirit. Read More Centenary Events Our Centenary year will be filled with moments to remember, a whole calendar of celebrations running from September through to July. The 1925 Student Day launched celebrations in September and we’ll close with our Centenary Founder’s Day on 4th July 2026. Along the way, there’ll be plenty of favourite traditions like Fireworks Night and the Christmas Fair plus a whole-school Centenary Sports Festival in the summer and our annual musicals and plays that bring the community together, time and time again. There is a series of Reunions for OFs during the Autumn Term. Please head to the OF website to find out more. Clothing and technical equipment specifications for different courses and activities. ESSENTIAL KIT Essential Kit ESSENTIAL KIT 01 PE Kit PE kit can be bought online at www.schoolblazer.com where you will be able to see the full range of kit on the dedicated Frensham Heights pages. Nursery to Year 3 PE Kit Please note, Schoolblazer recommends buying the older PE kit for Year 3, we don’t require this for Year 3, we recommend the kit as shown above, but it is your choice if you want to buy big to wear in Year 4 as well. They will be wearing their PE kit all day in Year 3, so choose something they will be comfortable in. Yrs 4 & up PE Kit (to see all items in Schoolblazer, you need to select 'prefer not to say' for your child's gender) Essential items: Fitness t-shirt Bottoms, choose from below*: * if none of these are comfortable for your child, they may wear navy or black 2-in-1 running style shorts like these - click to view Long socks Shin pads and mouth guards are also essential for everyone Shin pads can be bought from any sports store and should be the correct size for your child. Mouth guards can be bought before your child starts school but parents will be able to buy a custom-fitted mouth guard from Opro. Our Sports Department will send you more details in September about booking your child in for an appointment to be fitted for these at the beginning of term. Swimwear Boys are asked to bring swimming trunks/shorts (not beach wear) and swimming goggles. Girls are asked to bring a one-piece swimsuit in a plain colour, swimming goggles and a swim hat Footwear Boots - can be used for football and rugby. Something simple like this will work. Trainers - Astro trainers are perfect for all year round. For summer term, some more comprehensive running/athletic trainers are useful. Sports bags As you will see when you log on, Schoolblazer also stock a sports bag, but students can bring any sensible sports bag as long as it is clearly named and not too bulky. Desirable items: Optional items: Hockey stick - not needed as we will provide one for lessons. However, if you would like to buy a basic stick its always nice for students to bring their own, especially if they aspire to play in matches. (Wouldn’t be needed until January). Cricket Whites - not essential. Rugby - only additional kit needed is a gumshield, this is also a requirement for hockey so must be purchased before January! You can find these cheaply online (Amazon/Sports Direct) or we have partnership with Opro if you wanted a more specific product but is quite expensive - click here. 02 Outdoor Education & Forest School Children in Nursery to Year 3 get their first taste of the wonder and excitement of outdoor learning through Forest School, which they have as part of the weekly curriculum. Wellington boots are definitely required. Waterproof jackets and trousers are provided. Children in Years 4 to 6 can take part in Forest Class as an extracurricular activity. All Junior School students will require a waterproof jacket. For general one-day OE activities and extracurricular activities (ECAs), the essential list for all Middle School and Sixth Form students is: 1 quick-drying t-shirt 1 pair of quick-drying trousers 1 waterproof jacket 1 pair of waterproof trousers 1 pair of walking boots or sturdy trainers 1 fleece Students taking part in longer OE activities, including Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, will be given a relevant kit list in advance. 03 Maths Students in Years 7-11 need the usual equipment for writing and drawing, plus a ruler, compass (for drawing circles), protractor (measuring angles) and a calculator. For calculators we recommend the Casio FX-83GT CW or the slightly more expensive Casio FX-991CW (which has better functionality suitable in Y10/Y11 but can also be used in Y7/Y8/Y9). Students in the Sixth Form studying A Level Maths need a calculator (we recommend the FX-991CW ) but a graphical calculator Casio FX-CG50 would benefit all those studying A Level and Further Maths (but this is not essential). We can often get the graphical calculator at discounted rates so please ask your Maths teacher before purchasing. Note: For students that are planning to study A-Level or Further Maths it would be worth considering purchasing the Casio FX-CG50 (in year 10 or 11), this can be arranged through the school usually at a discounted rate so please speak to your Maths teacher before purchasing to see if appropriate for your child. 04 Dance Junior School School PE kit is preferred. Hair needs to be tied back. Year 7-11 Students School PE kit is preferred. Other suitable clothing includes jogging bottoms, leggings, footless tights or shorts with a T-shirt, vest top or leotard. Feet need to be bare or suitable soft sole dance shoes. Long hair needs to be tied back. ECA Students Suitable clothing includes jogging bottoms, leggings, footless tights or shorts with a T-shirt, vest top or leotard. Feet need to be bare or suitable soft sole dance shoes. Long hair needs to be tied back. Note: External providers may require specific uniform. These will be outlined at sign up. 05 Laptops All students in Years 7 to 13 must have a laptop. In the 2025/26 academic year we introduced a laptop lease scheme for student devices. The aim is for all students to attend school with the same device, which makes it easier to support and to manage in the classroom. We have chosen a Lenovo – 13w 2-in-1 Gen 3 device as our specified school device and we have various fixed term lease/purchase options available. This device will come with a stylus and a shock proof case. They also come with an accidental damage support package and we have a swap out facility available whereby we lend a laptop to the student should their laptop need to be sent off for repair. The school will manage the repair service for you. The devices will be built to a school specification and managed by the school. If ordered by the 1st August they will be ready for collection at school at the beginning of the September term. The attachment below gives information about the scheme and how to place an order for a laptop, but a more detailed walk through of the scheme is available from this YouTube link Making 1:2:1 devices schemes at Frensham Heights Easy4u! (youtube.com) If you have any questions regarding the laptops and the lease, please contact Easy4U (their email address is on both the flyer and the video) in the first instance. All other IT queries please do contact IT@frensham.org Easy4u Order Flyer - Frensham Heights - 2025 .pdf Download PDF • 744KB 06 Photography Students studying both GCSE and A Level should have their own DSLR or similar – it hasn’t got to be top of the range but it must have the feature to change the shutter speed / aperture / iso . The major contenders as we know are Canon or Nikon but there are a lot of other options. The school cameras are Canon 1300D (think this model is now obsolete, look at something like 250D or 2000D, the more zeros the lower the spec) - if students want to be able to use the lenses that school have then they should obviously take this into consideration. Most standard camera bodies come with a standard lens (18-55) any additional lenses are a bonus ! Students could also consider mirrorless which is a smaller/ less chunky alternative (ie. Canon EOS R100 - Compact Mirrorless Digital Camera or similar) or there are compact camera that you don’t have the facility to change the lens. A good place to benchmark price is www.wexphotovideo.com https://www.wexphotovideo.com/canon-eos-2000d-digital-slr-camera-body-with-18-55mm-is-ii-lens-1655053/ Most cameras come with just one battery, a spare can be useful and remember all cameras need an SD card – better to have a couple of lower size storage than one big one, just incase of damage or losing it.

- Junior School | Frensham Heights
At Frensham, we treat academic and creative subjects equally and within the younger years particularly, our aim is to offer a very broad curriculum allowing each child to find their own strengths and passions. JUNIOR SCHOOL As a progressive school, we may be different than a lot of very traditional independent schools, but we have classes and timetables and very solid expectations of everyone here. We don’t have uniforms, prefects, head boys and girls or Saturday school, but we do have a diverse curriculum, a lot of outdoor learning time and a very nurturing community. Come and have a look for yourself. 1/14 JOIN US FOR AN OPEN MORNING QUICK LINKS NURSERY & RECEPTION TEACHING & LEARNING PASTORAL CARE OUR STAFF ADMISSIONS JUNIOR SCHOOL: YEARS 1 TO 6 If you've ever worried that your child might be losing that natural love of learning or worried that their special spark might be fading, then we might just be the school you're looking for. We are passionate about keeping that childhood sense of wonder alive. Young children are fascinating. Their ideas are inspiring. Full of an optimism, creativity and open-mindedness that rivals a super power. Their huge imaginations and confident creativity are the basis for an amazing life, an amazing world. These things should be nurtured, encouraged and strengthened, but it's only when you acknowledge that each child shows these things differently - some when they're older, some younger - some visually, some physically, some verbally - only then can you support each child on their own educational adventure. By championing individuality and building a firm basis of mutual respect, our Junior School teachers and children learn together, discuss together and grow together. TEACHING & LEARNING TEACHING & LEARNING Sometimes, when people don’t know us very well, they assume we’re an art school. That our main focus is on the creative and performing arts. We’re quite flattered and we do all of that exceptionally well, but we’re actually a very balanced school. We don’t sway more towards the arts just as we don’t sway more towards traditional academic subjects. Both are essential. A scientist will be stronger for having learnt about colour and texture. A dancer will excel with a good knowledge of geometry and physics. Everyone will benefit from having performed on a stage from an early age. Most independent schools sway heavily towards academics, but you can, and should, have your maths and do a bit of dancing too. CLASS SIZES Our class sizes are small allowing for a lot more discussion, flexibility and personality. The maximum class size for Year 1 is 10 and for Years 2 to 6 is 16-18 children. We have one class per year in Years 1 to 3 and two classes per year in Years 4 to 6. We welcome children to join at any year group where there is space available. OUR LEARNING CHARTER - YRS N-3 OUR LEARNING CHARTER - YRS 4-6 CURRICULUM At Frensham, we treat academic and creative subjects equally and within the younger years particularly, our aim is to offer a very broad curriculum allowing each child to find their own strengths and passions. The core academic curriculum of Maths, English, Science and Topic happens with the year group teams, mainly in the classroom. Due to the small class sizes and our informal relationships, teachers get to know the children really well and really understand what makes each one tick. They can differentiate the work across all subjects to make sure each child receives the support or challenges that they need. We have a team of Teaching and Learning Assistants who support our Junior School, they work with the class teachers during core lessons to make sure all children are making progress. Each year group is different - we look at the children in front of us each year and provide the relevant support to meet their needs, as a group and as individuals. SUBJECT TEACHER LESSONS Our Junior School children have their core classes with their class teachers, but in order to experience a truly broad curriculum, they also have regular classes with subject teachers who teach up through the school - Dance, Drama, Music, IT, PE, Outdoor Ed and Modern Foreign Languages. CURRICULUM BREAKDOWN For the most part, we stick to our timetable, but class teachers do have the flexibility to extend activities if the children are really engrossed and makeup missed time in another subject later. Lessons are 30 minutes long and the weekly breakdown is shown below. That’s not what progressive means. It means we’re forward-thinking, we’re open-minded. We help our children grow in their own unique ways, to develop their own skills and passions. This sets them in good stead for a future world we cannot yet know. We are a modern school, after all the world moves onwards not backwards. We don’t mind a bit of looking backwards, we’re very proud of our heritage, but there’s no point teaching children to mirror long-gone cultural and social ways. Teaching them to live in the past doesn’t make them stronger, it leaves them behind. I f you ask someone who’s never visited Frensham, they’ll probably just say we’re a school that uses first names and doesn’t have uniforms. It might be said with a hint of doubt. That’s a bit weird, right? But, if we look around at our modern society – the workplace, family life – is it really so strange? These are actually very simple things, very natural things and their effect in a school setting is quite refreshing – ultimately by taking away that hint of doubt about doing something differently. We stand firmly on a base of mutual respect. Teachers don’t demand respect, they earn it. As do the children. We aim to treat each other as we want to be treated. With respect. With compassion. With empathy. With our small class sizes and close relationships between children and teachers, bullying and other behavioural issues are rare and tend to be handled before they can become a problem. If problems do arise, they are handled through calm discussion with each child being given the chance to listen, talk and learn. We have boundaries, but not rules for rules sake allowing children to question, develop self-awareness, awareness of others and take responsibility for their actions. PASTORAL CARE OUR STAFF We seek out innovative teachers - those who aren't afraid to push boundaries, be brave and think outside the box. Teachers who are excited about their lessons and love learning. They inspire that passion in their students putting them in a great frame of mind for their primary education and beyond.
