- CREATIVE ARTS | Frensham Heights
The creative arts are a key part of a Frensham education. All children from Nursery up through Year 9 will have specialist art lessons every week. Children in Years 7-9 have three hours a week - fine art, ceramics and design & technology. There are four GCSE and A Levels offered - Fine Art, Graphic Communication, Photography and 3D Design CREATIVE ARTS Enter Frensham's Art & Design Centre and be captivated. It's more than just exceptional facilities - it's a celebration of every student's unique creative journey. Here, courage meets craft, and individual expression thrives. Step into Frensham's Art & Design Centre and prepare to be inspired. Beyond the state-of-the-art facilities, you'll discover a vibrant tapestry of student creativity. Here, every voice is celebrated, showcasing a diverse and often thought-provoking range of work. This isn't about following a formula; it's about fostering the courage to explore, experiment, and discover a unique artistic path. The Creative Arts at Frensham At Frensham Heights, Creative Arts are central to the school’s educational philosophy and are woven deeply into the curriculum from the earliest years through to Sixth Form. The Art & Design Centre, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, serves as a hub for cultivating individual expression, courage and experimentation . Students are encouraged to explore, investigate and develop their unique artistic voice rather than follow a formula-based programme. From Nursery onwards , students embark on a creative journey that builds foundational skills and enthusiasm; in Years 7–9 they engage in intensive weekly study across 2D art, ceramics and design technology, emphasising drawing, investigation and exploratory practice. As students progress to GCSE and A-Level options in Fine Art, Graphic Communication, 3D Design and Photography , they are supported to take increasing responsibility for their creative decisions, shaping intent and meaning within their work. They work in small classes that foster discussion, collaboration and personalised feedback. This approach reflects Frensham’s broader curricular aim to treat creative subjects equally with academic ones, nurturing confidence, critical thinking and a lifelong passion for the arts as part of a broad, thoughtful education. - Who We Are | Frensham Heights
Frensham Heights is a unique, progressive school. Our mission and values are modern and forward thinking, but we are firmly rooted in our heritage. At Frensham, we leave as we come – as individuals – but in our time here, we become more. We become stronger. Kinder. Now in our centenary, it is clear that Frensham is bigger than any one of us, from our founders to our newest family; it is all of us. We are Frensham. WHO WE ARE OUR VISION: we are empowering tomorrow’s changemakers to find their inspiration today through a transformative education. Vision OUR MISSION. We continue to pioneer a better education, one which: celebrates the individual as part of a nurturing and supportive community; amplifies the voices of our community, encouraging self-expression and sharing of ideas; brims with inspiration from strong relationships with outstanding educators in a stimulating environment. OUR AIMS. We will: provide a nurturing and supportive community that allows all individuals to flourish, with equity, mutual respect and generosity of spirit at its heart; inspire our students’ creativity, intellectual curiosity and passion for learning with a rich progressive curriculum that develops resilient and self-reliant learners, prepared for the modern world; promote education in its widest sense, with stimulating and unique enrichment opportunities; instil and support collaboration, ethical responsibility and community engagement, encouraging our community to make a positive and lasting contribution to the world around them; thrive by securing the future of our school and its communities. OUR VALUES ORIGINALITY OF THOUGHT FRENSHAM EMBRACES CREATIVITY We encourage everyone to foster their boldness and innovation, seeking opportunities locally and globally to discover and bring fresh thinking to our community. SPIRIT OF TOGETHERNESS FRENSHAM NURTURES COMMUNITY SPIRIT Relationships are the foundation of our school and our success, built on genuine mutual respect, compassion and kindness. We embrace freedom with a firm understanding of our responsibility towards our community. RESPECT OF INDIVIDUALITY FRENSHAM CELEBRATES AUTHENTICITY This is a place where you can be the ‘true you’; we pride ourselves on that. We support all to have the confidence to stand for something and be the person you truly want to be. COURAGE TO TRY FRENSHAM FUELS PERSONAL DEDICATION We aspire to be the very best we can be, fully committing to our learning, proactively seeking improvement and working collaboratively for the benefit of the whole community. OUR HERITAGE Frensham Heights was founded in 1925 by educationalists Beatrice Ensor and Isabel King with the aid of a generous benefactor, Edith Douglas-Hamilton. They were passionate about offering an alternative style of education with the child at its heart. A school and a community based on mutual respect, tolerance and generosity of spirit which would educate the whole child – mind, body and spirit. And so it has been ever since. Our founders were not alone in this aspiration. Many other schools were founded around the world during this period as part of the Progressive Education Movement which sought to offer something truly different to the formal, instructional-style of teaching found in most traditional state and private schools. Schools were founded as compassionate communities not only under the strong belief that educating the whole child was essential, but also as democracies with children taking an active part in their education – championing independent thought, exploration and student voice. Even through a war and more recently through a pandemic, Frensham has sought to lead with compassion and with a belief in each child and the good of humanity at its heart. PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION TODAY Although relatively rare in this country, Progressive Schools are thriving around the globe. We are very proud to be a member of the international Progressive Education Network. This is important to us not only because we truly believe this style of education offers children a better chance of happiness and success, but also because it holds us to account as a school, as educators. By promising to uphold not only our school’s founding ethos, but also the PEN principles, we have a better chance of continuing to offer the best possible opportunities for our students. As many more conventional schools catch on to the importance of the ‘soft skills’ and creativity, that have been intrinsic to schools like Frensham from the beginning, we must continue to set an example and pioneer education. We must keep moving forward to provide the most dynamic, inspirational Progressive curriculum that we can. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT PEN

- CHARITY & OUTREACH | Frensham Heights
Through charity and outreach opportunities, our students can step outside their bubbles, broaden their minds and make a real difference. CHARITY & OUTREACH Our students are very lucky to be given the opportunities they have - an amazing education and a safe, supportive environment. With this, we ask them to look beyond our comfortable bubble and commit to making a change - to making a difference. Whether that is fundraising for our partner schools in Malawi or teaching science and IT to local children - we can each find a way to make a difference. OUR SCHOOL CHARITY 2024/25 GREAT ORMOND STREET HOSPITAL CHARITY Our school charity for 2024/25 is Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. Every year, our students vote for our annual charity who we will raise money for through many different events and intitiatives over the academic year. Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity stop at nothing to help give seriously ill children childhoods that are fuller, funner and longer. For the hundreds of children from all over the UK who are treated by Great Ormond Street Hospital every day, for children with rare or complex diseases everywhere, for this generation and all those to come. Because they believe no childhood should be lost to illness. Great Ormond Street Hospital first opened its doors on Valentine’s Day in 1852 with just 10 beds. Now, it’s one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals and home to vital advancements in paediatric medicine and care. This extraordinary hospital has always depended on charitable support to go above and beyond for seriously ill children. And they depend on you to make it happen. Thanks to incredible supporters, they’ve already helped to innovate better treatments, develop new cures and advance technology for the treatment of rare or complex childhood illnesses. But there’s so much more to do. Together, we can give seriously ill children the best chance, and the best childhoods, possible. Find out more about our history, impact and how you can get involved. FIND OUT MORE OUR SCHOOL PARTNERS MALAWI SCHOOLS TRUST We have had a wonderful, collaborative partnership with schools in Malawi for over a decade. The Frensham's partnership with schools in Malawi started in 2009 under the leadership of previous Head Andrew Fisher, when our charity efforts that year supported the All Saints School and the nearby AMAO Orphanage in Mtunthama, Malawi. This partnership has continued ever since and it benefits our students just as much as those in Malawi. Staff and students organise and fund trips to Malawi every other year. This gives our students, and staff, the opportunity to see not only how different - and hard - life can be for young people in Africa but also that they can make a very real difference to other people’s lives. And if young people believe they can make a positive impact in the world, they’ll grow into adults who do. Malawi Schools Trust was formed in 2019 to continue this work. Their main vision is that every child in Malawi should have an education. To attain this goal they will work carefully in partnership with local communities on projects that make this possible. One school at a time. At Frensham Heights, we will continue to visit and support our partner schools in Malawi. FIND OUT MORE MALAWI SCHOOLS TRUST HAPPY SPACE Happy Space is a preventative mental wellbeing organisation set up by a group of Old Frenshamians to protect, inspire and empower young people nationwide.. So many mental health issues are preventable with good wellbeing education. They're on a mission to get that education into curriculums nationwide. Their vision is a society free of mental health stigma where every young person has access to the basic toolkit they need to help look after their mental health in the transition to adulthood and beyond. Through their guidebooks, toolkits ad lesson plans, they are helping educators reach out to children at key points to give them the support and knowledge to improve their mental health for years to come HAPPY SPACE OUR OUTREACH PROGRAMMES One of the purposes of our broad curriculum is to give our students the opportunity to try lots of things and find where their passions lie. If we can then give them the opportunity to share their passions and interests with others while getting out into the community, that's even better. 1/1 BORDON JUNIOR SCHOOL Frensham Year 9 and 10 ICT students have been mentoring Year 5 children at Bordon Junior School. SIXTH FORM LIFE OVERVIEW BEYOND THE CLASSROOM ARTS AWARDS FUTURE PATHWAYS ADMISSIONS Life at Frensham Sixth Form: A Vibrant Community Frensham Sixth Form offers the best of both worlds with the independence of a college mixed with the facilities and diverse extracurricular opportunities of a wider school community. Our more informal setting and smaller class sizes allow our students and teachers to really get to know one another - literally on a first name basis. Teachers can then adapt their lessons to the personalities and interests in front of them allowing for a bespoke education for all. Getting the Balance Right. At Frensham, we believe we offer the perfect balance of academic challenge, freedom to grow and support for all those moments along the way. You’ll learn to stand on your own two feet, where there is more freedom than in Year 11, but with the support and encouragement to spur you on. We have small tutor groups with tutors and friends who really know you and look out for you. Tutor Groups Every student belongs to a blended sixth form tutor group, bringing together students from Years 12 and 13. The tutor serves as the central hub of our school community—acting as the key link between students, parents, and staff. They are Sixth Form Specialists and really know how to help when problems arise. Small tutor groups ensure that each student benefits from personalised attention, guidance and support throughout their sixth form journey. Tutor time includes a balance of one-to-one mentoring sessions, group activities and super-curricular learning - where students explore an exciting range of topics beyond the standard curriculum. These sessions are enriched by talks from an inspiring variety of guest speakers, including Nelson Mandela’s bodyguard, war correspondents, Atlantic rowers, mountaineers and Titanic historians, among many others. This dynamic programme helps students broaden their horizons, develop confidence, and engage with real-world issues. Roberts House: A Sixth Form Environment With the Best of All Worlds Roberts House is our co-educational Sixth Form Centre for everyone in Year 12 and 13, day students and boarders, set on the school campus but a bit away from the rest of the school, so you get all the benefit of the school’s incredible facilities, whilst having your own space. - FRENSHAM SPIRIT | Frensham Heights
Frensham Heights is a very special school, there is a lightness and calmness around the site which comes from everyone being able to be themselves, genuinely. THE FRENSHAM SPIRIT FIRST NAMES & UNIFORMS If you ask someone who’s never visited Frensham, they’ll probably just say we’re a school that uses first names and doesn’t have uniforms. It might be said with a hint of doubt. That’s a bit weird, right? But, if we look around at our modern society – the workplace, family life – is it really so strange? These are actually very simple things, very natural things and their effect in a school setting is quite refreshing – ultimately by taking away that hint of doubt about doing something differently, that worry about being a bit weird. There is an energy about Frensham which is hard to describe. It's a feeling of happiness and lightness, a sense of freedom. It comes from all the children being comfortable in their own skins, their own clothes. With no prefects or head boys and girls, everyone is on a level playing field. They can be who they are. And it comes from our foundation of exceptional pastoral care which thrives on the genuine relationships which develop between all members of the community - looking out for one another. A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD As from our founding days, everyone at Frensham is on a level playing field. When you come here, you can just relax and be yourself. The teachers don’t hide behind titles or formal clothes and the children’s individuality isn’t hidden behind uniforms or false respect. Egos are left at the door. The Head, the littlest nursery child, the newest teacher, the shyest sixth former, the part-time TAs, the support staff. Everyone is an equal, important, valued part of the community. Teachers don’t have to spend time telling students to pull up their socks, instead they have conversations, build relationships. Really special relationships built on genuine, mutual respect and interest. Relationships that spark learning. FREEDOM & RESPONSIBILITY Contrary to what many believe, Progressive Education is not without boundaries. Respect underlies everything we do at Frensham; respect that is earned, not demanded or assumed. We give children more freedom than at other schools, but with freedom comes responsibility and we have high expectations of everyone in our community. There is a misconception that a school without uniforms and with children walking together rather than in lines is a school without discipline. It is true that we don’t give detentions and the sanctions we do give out are not done on a whim for minor mistakes. What we do, and this takes much more time and patience, is talk and listen. MAKING MISTAKES Our students make mistakes, everyone makes mistakes and that is okay, it’s how you grow. You own your mistakes, learn from them and move on. But, the first time is a mistake, and the second time is a choice and you will find then that there are consequences at Frensham, just like at every other school. In any other tight-knit community. Being shut down or shut out is an easy option all around. It stops the conversation, shuts the door and doesn’t allow anyone to move forward or grow up. At Frensham, discipline is based on conversations. It’s not an easy, laissez-faire option. These are difficult two way conversations about putting your hands up and owning and accepting your choices, rectifying, moving on and becoming the best version of yourself. The freedom is here to help our students grow into open-minded, courageous, well-rounded individuals and for the most part they stand up and embrace the responsibility and the trust that goes along with that. It is truly refreshing and the perfect opportunity to get ready for life beyond school. SIXTH FORM COURSES OVERVIEW SIXTH FORM LIFE BEYOND THE CLASSROOM ARTS AWARDS FUTURE PATHWAYS ADMISSIONS A Wide Range of Subjects to Build a Personalised Sixth Form Curriculum At Frensham Heights Sixth Form, we pride ourselves on offering an extensive choice of A Level subjects—over 25 options across academic, creative and practical disciplines. Our goal is to help every student build a personalised A Level curriculum that reflects their passions, strengths and future aspirations. We believe students achieve their best when studying subjects that truly inspire them. Our A Level options process begins early in Year 11, allowing us to create a bespoke timetable based around each student’s subject choices. At this stage, we don’t restrict students to predefined option blocks—every learner can craft a unique combination of subjects tailored to their goals. Please note, for late applications subject blocks will already be set. Most students choose to study three A Levels, although many also take additional qualifications such as Mathematical Studies or the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) to broaden their academic profile and university prospects. With flexible subject combinations, personalised guidance, and a custom timetable, Frensham Heights offers a dynamic and supportive environment for Sixth Form study. To help you find the right course, we've asked some of our subject leads to describe their courses and our students to share their insight.
