- HEAD'S WELCOME | Frensham Heights
Hear a few words from Andrew Fisher, our Head, about his 15 years heading up Frensham Heights and his return to Frensham to pave the way for our incoming Head, Ben McCarey. WELCOME Welcome to Frensham I am honoured and humbled to be leading the Frensham Heights community as it enters its second century. I am part of this community both as Head and as a parent and my family is incredibly excited to begin our lives within this wonderful and unique school. As a parent, I want my children to grow up being open minded and willing to embrace new experiences; I want them to be free to explore their own paths and experience the beauty and joy which exist in our world (without being naive to its many flaws). Most importantly, I want them to learn within a community of individuals who understand the importance of kindness, compassion and optimism. As a teacher, I believe that a traditional, linear, education system does not adequately prepare children for the world they will inherit. This world is a rapidly changing, uncertain and, sometimes, scary place. If an education only equips children with an armoury of facts and knowledge and the ability to pass exams, but it doesn't furnish them with the ability to think creatively, critically and empathetically, then we have failed them. A Frensham education is one which ensures our children are well qualified and well educated and, most importantly, free to be kids in a world where we all grow up too quickly. Ben McCarey

- PRIVACY POLICY | Frensham Heights
PRIVACY POLICY PRIVACY POLICY FRENSHAM HEIGHTS SCHOOL – DATA PROTECTION PRIVACY NOTICE Frensham Heights Educational Trust Limited (known as Frensham Heights School, the ‘ School ’) is a Data Controller for the purposes of the relevant data protection legislation. This Privacy Notice applies to the School and its trading subsidiary Frensham Heights Enterprises Limited. THE PURPOSE OF THIS POLICY This policy is intended to provide information about how the School will use (or “process”) personal data about individuals including: its staff; its current, past and prospective pupils; and their parents, carers or guardians (referred to in this policy as “parents”). This information is provided in accordance with the rights of individuals under Data Protection Law to understand how their data is used. Staff, parents and pupils are all encouraged to read this Privacy Notice and understand the School’s obligations to its entire community. This Privacy Notice applies alongside any other information the School may provide about a particular use of personal data, for example when collecting data via an online or paper form. This Privacy Notice also applies in addition to the School‘s other relevant terms and conditions and policies, including: any contract between the School and its staff or the parents of pupils; the School’s Rules; the School‘s policy on taking, storing and using images of children; the School’s retention of records policy; the School‘s safeguarding, pastoral, or health and safety policies, including as to how concerns or incidents are recorded; and the School‘s current and future IT policies, including its policies on Acceptable Use of IT and Use of IT Technology. Anyone who works for, or acts on behalf of, the School ( including staff, volunteers, governors and service providers) should be aware of and comply with this Privacy Notice and the School‘s data protection policy for staff which provides further information about how personal data will be used. RESPONSIBILITY FOR DATA PROTECTION The School has appointed the Director of IT and Estates as the School’s lead for compliance including data protection. The Director of IT and Estates will deal with any requests and enquiries concerning the School’s uses of your personal data (see section on Your Rights below) and endeavour to ensure that all personal data is processed in compliance with this policy and Data Protection Law. The Director of IT and Estates can be contacted by email: dataprivacy@frensham.org or by phone: 01252 792561. WHY THE SCHOOL NEEDS TO PROCESS PERSONAL DATA In order to carry out its ordinary duties to staff, pupils and parents, the School may process a wide range of personal data about individuals (including current, past and prospective staff, pupils or parents) as part of its daily operation. Some of this activity the School will need to carry out in order to fulfil its legal rights, duties or obligations – including those under a contract with its staff, or parents of its pupils. Other uses of personal data will be made in accordance with the School’s legitimate interests, or the legitimate interests of another, provided that these are not outweighed by the impact on individuals, and provided it does not involve special or sensitive types of data. The School expects that the following uses may fall within that category of its (or its community’s) “ legitimate interests ”: For the purposes of pupil selection (and to confirm the identity of prospective pupils and their parents); To provide education services, including musical education, physical training or spiritual development, career services, and extra – curricular activities to pupils, and monitoring pupils’ progress and educational needs; Maintaining relationships with alumni and the School community, including direct marketing or fundraising activity; For the purposes of donor due diligence, and to confirm the identity of prospective donors and their bac kground and relevant interests; For the purposes of management planning and forecasting, research and statistical analysis, including that imposed or provided for by law (such as diversity or gender pay gap analysis and taxation records); To enable relevant authorities to monitor the School‘s performance and to intervene or assist with incidents as appropriate; To give and receive information and references about past, current and prospective pupils, including relating to outstanding fees or payment history, to/from any educational institution that the pupil attended or where it is proposed they attend; and to provide references to potential employers of past pupils; To give and receive information and references about past, current and prospective members of staff To enable pupils to take part in national or other assessments, and to publish the results of public examinations or other achievements of pupils of the School ; To safeguard pupils’ welfare and provide appropriate pastoral care; To monitor (as appropriate) use of the School‘s IT and communications systems in accordance with the School‘s acceptable use of IT policy; To make use of photographic images of pupils in School publications, on the School website and (where appropriate) on the School‘s social media channels in accordance with the School‘s policy on taking, storing and using images of students ; For security purposes, including CCTV in accordance with the School’s CCTV policy; and Where otherwise reasonably necessary for the School ‘s purposes, including to obtain appropriate professional advice and insurance for the School. While covering the large majority of uses, the above list is not exhaustive and from time to time other uses may also be included as legitimate interests. In addition, the School may need to process special category personal data (concerning health, ethnicity, religion, biometrics or sexual life) or criminal records information (such as when carrying out DBS checks) in accordance with rights or duties imposed on it by law, including as regards safeguarding and employment, or from time to time by explicit consent where required. These reasons may include: To safeguard pupils’ welfare and provide appropriate pastoral (and where necessary, medical) care, and to take appropriate action in the event of an emergency, incident or accident, including by disclosing details of an individual’s medical condition where it is in the individual‘s interests to do so: for example for medical advice, social services, insurance purposes or to organisers of School trips; To provide educational services in the context of any special educational needs of a pupil; In connection with employment of its staff, for example DBS checks, welfare or pension plans ; To run any of its systems that operate on biometric data, such as for security and other forms of pupil identification (lockers, lunch etc.); or For legal and regulatory purposes (for example child protection, diversity monitoring and health and safety) and to comply with its legal obligations and duties of care. TYPES OF PERSONAL DATA PROCESSED BY THE SCHOOL This will include by way of example: names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses and other contact details; car details (about those who use our car parking facilities); bank details and other financial information, e.g. about parents who pay fees to the School ; past, present and prospective pupils’ academic, disciplinary, admissions and attendance records (including information about any special needs), and examination scripts and marks; where appropriate, information about individuals’ health, and contact details for their next of kin; references given or received by the School about pu pils, and information provided by previous educational establishments and/or other professionals or organisations working with pupils; and images of pupils (and occasionally other individuals) engaging in School activities (in accordance with the School‘s policy on taking, storing and using images of students ). HOW THE SCHOOL COLLECTS DATA Generally, the School receives personal data from the individual directly (including, in the case of pupils, from their parents). This may be via a form, or simply in the ordinary course of interaction or communication (such as email or written assessments). However in some cases personal data may be supplied by third parties (for example another School, or other professionals or authorities working with that individual); or collected from publicly available resources such as websites. WHO HAS ACCESS TO PERSONAL DATA AND WHO THE SCHOOL SHARES IT WITH The School will need to share some personal information relating to its community with third parties, such as professional advisers (e.g. lawyers and accountants), relevant authorities ( e.g. HMRC, police, medical agencies or the local authority) and commercial partners (e.g. caterers, travel and transport companies). For the most part, personal data collected by the School will remain within the School and will be processed by appropriate individuals only in accordance with access protocols (i.e. on a ‘need to know’ basis). Particularly strict rules of access apply in the context of: medical records, held and accessed only by the School’s nurses and partnership doctors under the supervision of the School’s senior nurse; and pastoral or safeguarding files ; financial information submitted under bursary applications. However, a certain amount of any SEN pupil’s relevant information will need to be provided to staff more widely in the context of providing the necessary care and education that the pupil requires. Staff, pupils and parents are reminded that the School is under duties imposed by law and statutory guidance (including Keeping Children Safe in Education) to record or report incidents and concerns that arise or are reported to it, in some cases regardless of whether they are proven, if they meet a certain threshold of seriousness in their nature or regularity. This may include file notes on personnel or safeguarding files, and in some cases referrals to relevant authorities such as the LADO or police. For further information about this, please view the School’s Safeguarding Policy. Finally, in accordance with Data Protection Law, some of the School’s processing activity is carried out on its behalf by third parties, such as IT systems, web developers or cloud storage providers. This is always subject to contractual assurances that personal data will be kept securely and only in accordance with the School’s specific directions. HOW LONG WE KEEP PERSONAL DATA The School will retain personal data securely and only in line with how long it is necessary to keep for a legitimate and lawful reason. Typically, the legal recommendation for how long to keep ordinary staff and pupil personnel files is up to 7 years following departure from the School. However, incident reports and safeguarding files will need to be kept much longer, in accordance with specific legal requirements. If you have any specific queries about how this policy is applied, or wish to request that personal data that you no longer believe to be relevant is considered for erasure, please contact the Bursar, whose contact details are above. However, please bear in mind that the School may have lawful and necessary reasons to hold on to some data. The School’s Retention of Records Guidelines gives details of the retention of different records; staff can access this on–line, others can request a copy from the Bursar. KEEPING IN TOUCH AND SUPPORTING THE SCHOOL The School will use the contact details of parents, alumni and other members of the School community to keep them updated about the activities of the School, or alumni and parent events of interest, including by sending updates and newsletters, by email and by post. Unless the relevant individual objects, the School may also: Share personal data about parents and/or alumni, as appropriate, with organisations set up to help establish and maintain relationships with the School community, such as the Old Frenshamian (OF) organisation and Friends of Frensham (FOF) ; Contact parents and/or alumni (including via the organisations above) by post and email in order to promote and raise funds for the School and, where appropriate, other worthy causes; Collect information from publicly available sources about parents’ and former pupils’ occupation and activities, for monitoring and marketing purposes; Should you wish to limit or object to any such use, or would like further information about them, please contact the Bursar in writing. You always have the right to withdraw consent, where given, or otherwise object to direct marketing or fundraising. However, the School may need nonetheless to retain some of your details (not least to ensure that no more communications are sent to that particular address, email or telephone number). YOUR RIGHTS Individuals have various rights under Data Protection Law to access and understand personal data about them held by the School, and in some cases ask for it to be erased or amended or for the School to stop processing it, but subject to certain exemptions and limitations. Any individual wishing to access or amend their personal data, or wishing it to be transferred to another person or organisation, or who has some other objection to how their personal data is used, should put their request in writing to the Bursar. The School will endeavour to respond to any such written requests as soon as is reasonably practicable and in any event within statutory time–limits, which is one month in the case of requests for access to information. The School will be better able to respond quickly to smaller, targeted requests for information. If the request is manifestly excessive or similar to previous requests, the School may ask you to reconsider or charge a proportionate fee, but only where Data Protection Law allows it. You should be aware that certain data is exempt from the right of access. This may include information which identifies other individuals, or information which is subject to legal professional privilege. The School is also not required to disclose any pupil examination scripts (though examine rs’ comments may fall to be disclosed), nor any confidential reference given by the School for the purposes of the education, training or employment of any individual. PUPIL REQUESTS Pupils can make subject access requests for their own personal data, provided that, in the reasonable opinion of the School, they have sufficient maturity to understand the request they are making (see section Whose Rights below). Indeed, while a person with parental responsibility will generally be entitled to make a subject access request on behalf of younger pupils, the information in question is always considered to be the child’s at law. A pupil of any age may ask a parent or other representative to make a subject access request on his/her behalf. Moreover (if of sufficient age) their consent or authority may need to be sought by the parent making such a request. Pupils at Frensham Heights aged 13 and above are generally assumed to have this level of maturity, although this will depend on both the child and the personal data requested, including any relevant circumstances at home. Slightly younger children may also sufficiently mature to have a say in this decision. All information requests from, or on behalf of, pupils – whether made under subject access or simply as an incidental request – will therefore be considered on a case by case basis. CONSENT Where the School is relying on consent as a means to process personal data, any person may withdraw this consent at any time (subject to similar age considerations as above). Please be aware however that the School may have another lawful reason to process the personal data in question even without your consent. That reason will usually have been asserted under this Privacy Notice, or may otherwise exist under some form of contract or agreement with the individual (e.g. an employment or parent contract, or because a purchase of goods, services or membership of an organisation such as OF or FOF has been requested). WHOSE RIGHTS The rights under Data Protection Law belong to the individual to whom the data relates. However, the School will often rely on parental consent to process personal data relating to pupils (if consent is required) unless, given the nature of the processing in question, and the pupil’s age and understanding, it is more appropriate to rely on the pupil’s consent. Parents should be aware that in such situations they may not be consulted, depending on the interests of the child, the parents’ rights at law or under their contract, and all the circumstances. In general, the School will assume that pupils’ consent is not required for ordinary disclosure of their personal data to their parents, e.g. for the purposes of keeping parents informed about the pupil’s activities, progress and behaviour, and in the interests of the pupil’s welfare, unless, in the School‘s opinion, there is a good reason to do otherwise. However, where a pupil seeks to raise concerns confidentially with a member of staff and expressly withholds their agreement to their personal data being disclosed to their parents, the School may be under an obligation to maintain confidentiality unless, in the School‘s opinion, there is a good reason to do otherwise; for example where the School believes disclosure will be in the best interests of the pupil or other pupils, or if required by law. Pupils are required to respect the personal data and privacy of others, and to comply with the School rules and the School‘s current and future IT policies, including its policies on Acceptable Use of IT and Use of IT Technology. DATA ACCURACY AND SECURITY The School will endeavour to ensure that all personal data held in relation to an individual is as up to date and accurate as possible. Individuals must please notify the Bursar of any significant changes to important information, such as contact details, held about them. An individual has the right to request that any out–of–date, irrelevant or inaccurate or information about them is erased or corrected (subject to certain exemptions and limitations under Data Protection Law): please see above for details of why the School may need to process your data, of who you may contact if you disagree. The School will take appropriate technical and organisational steps to ensure the security of personal data about individuals, including policies around use of technology and devices, and access to School systems. All staff and governors will be made aware of this policy and their duties under Data Protection Law and receive relevant training. THIS POLICY The School will update this Privacy Notice from time to time. Any substantial changes that affect your rights will be provided to you directly as far as is reasonably practicable. In Fireflies Nursery and Preschool, children are encouraged to follow their curiosity, explore freely and play with freedom. It’s here that their sense of wonder grows and their love of learning first takes flight. Fireflies is an education that keeps imagination alive and curiosity glowing. Children learn that their thoughts matter, their voices are heard and that school is a place filled with joy, kindness and adventure. From Little Learners to Confident Explorers Our Fireflies are fully part of the Frensham community. They use the same beautiful facilities, eat in the same dining hall and perform on the same stage as our older students. They are known, valued and included at every step and this is how their confidence starts to grow and blossom. We celebrate individuality. Our skilled Early Years Team uses a Planning in the Moment approach, responding to children in real time and turning their ideas into meaningful learning. Every activity is designed to be engaging, playful and purposeful. A child fascinated by Bonfire Night might find themselves exploring light and shadow, mixing hot and cold colours, listening to new sounds or even visiting the photography darkroom. No doubt then all topped off with marshmallows at the Forest School fire pit! Our practitioners provide holistic teaching and coverage across all EYFS areas: Personal, Social & Emotional Development Communication & Language Physical Development Literacy Mathematics Understanding the World Expressive Arts & Design A Day at Fireflies Nursery & Preschool Our days are shaped around the children - their interests, their energy and their ideas. Our Early Years team knows each child deeply and thoughtfully adapts to their needs, ensuring every day is meaningful, enriching and full of warmth. Frensham Heights is built on mutual respect. Staff model kindness, patience and genuine attentiveness, creating a culture where every child is heard and valued. With small class sizes and excellent ratios, children have the space to grow, thrive and become confident, joyful and excited learners. Transitioning into Reception Class from Fireflies We don’t want our children to grow-up too quickly and therefore use both Reception and Year 1 as time to transition happily and comfortably from the Fireflies space. Planning and Play in the Moment is still a massive part of our Reception class and the start of Year 1 and gradually this becomes more interspersed with learning moments of phonics, number work and increasing exploration of specific projects from our Junior School Curriculum. Our Fireflies Team Our EYFS staff are knowledgeable, creative and highly qualified, from Level 2 practitioners to postgraduate specialists. They thrive on children’s imagination and energy, creating a learning environment that is playful, stimulating and full of life. Capturing the Journey – Famly We use Famly to create a rich, personal record of every child’s learning. - Junior School | Frensham Heights
At Frensham, we treat academic and creative subjects equally and within the younger years particularly, our aim is to offer a very broad curriculum allowing each child to find their own strengths and passions. JUNIOR SCHOOL Keeping their curiosity alive. We may look different from more traditional independent schools (no uniforms, prefects or Saturday school) but we have regular routines, high expectations and a deeply purposeful approach to learning. What makes us unique is our diverse curriculum, our creative and caring Junior School Team, and our commitment to teaching bravely and responsively to the children in front of us. Whether indoors or outdoors, structured or spontaneous, learning at Frensham is warm, personal and child-centred. The best way to understand us is simply to visit — you’ll feel the difference immediately. QUICK LINKS FIREFLIES NURSERY TEACHING & LEARNING PASTORAL CARE OUR STAFF ADMISSIONS RECEPTION TO YEAR 6 Whether you are looking for an exciting and different learning experience for your child or you’ve ever worried that their spark might be fading, Frensham might be the home you’re looking for. We believe in keeping children younger for longer by protecting their sense of wonder in a world that often pushes them to grow up too quickly. Children are endlessly fascinating. Their optimism, imagination and creativity are superpowers and our job is to nurture these, not contain them. Every child expresses themselves differently - through words, movement, art, questions or quiet thinking - and our teaching adapts to honour their individuality. By championing children's voices and building a culture of mutual respect, our Junior School is a place where teachers and students learn together, think together and grow together. And have a whole lot of fun along the way! PASTORAL CARE We are progressive, but not without structure. Being modern and forward-thinking means knowing children deeply, helping them grow at their own pace and preparing them for a world we cannot yet imagine. All while protecting their childhood for as long as we can. People who haven’t visited sometimes focus on the no uniforms or first names. To us, these are simple things that reflect real-world relationships and mutual respect. What matters is our culture: teachers earn respect by showing it and children learn to do the same. With small classes and strong relationships, behavioural issues are rare and handled calmly through conversation and reflection. Our Junior School Learning Charter (co-created with Years 4, 5 and 6) sets clear expectations for both students and teachers and is grounded in children’s rights. OUR LEARNING CHARTER - YRS N-3 OUR LEARNING CHARTER - YRS 4-6 At the heart of everything we do are our values: TEACHING & LEARNING Small classes and close relationships mean teachers truly know each child: what excites them, what challenges them and what helps them thrive. Our brilliant Teaching & Learning Assistants help ensure every child is supported, stretched and engaged. Each year group is different so each year, we design teaching that fits them. People sometimes think we’re an “arts school.” While we excel in creative and performing arts, we are equally passionate about academic subjects, sport and outdoor learning. We offer a dynamic, balanced and holistic education where every discipline strengthens the others. A scientist benefits from understanding colour and pattern; a dancer from exploring global cultures; a sports-lover from grasping physics and geometry. All children perform on stage from an early age, even our Fireflies, because confidence and storytelling matter to every learner. We are proudly creative, proudly academic and always child centred. CLASS SIZES Our small classes allow space for conversation, flexibility and personality. Year R: max 10 Year 1: max 10 Years 2 to 6: max 18 We have one class per year from our Reception class to Year 3, and two classes per year in Years 4 to 6. Children can join at any point in the year (space permitting), and we work closely with families to ensure smooth transitions into the space. CURRICULUM Our Project focused curriculum sits at the heart of the teaching and learning in the Junior School and treats creative and academic subjects equally. With Maths, English, Science and Project sessions taught by the year team (with regular use of the outdoors) learning feels purposeful, fun and connected. The aim is to create an immersive learning experience that links subjects together, gives children lots of rich context and also blankets this with additional enrichment and unique experiences. At the centre of the curriculum are three umbrella themes for the whole Junior School across the year: Autumn – People and Self Spring - Society Summer – The Natural World Within these themes then sit termly projects which revolve around a curiosity question (CQ). Examples of this would be: In Year 3 the project is Inventors and Human Legacy and this is fuelled by the CQ - What makes an idea powerful enough to change the world? In Year 6 the project is Refugees and the CQ is - If a refugee’s suitcase could talk, what stories would it tell about hope, fear and courage? The end point of each project? A showcase moment, designed by the children according to their interests and passions and shared and celebrated with their peers, teachers and parents. Adventure is a huge part of Frensham life. From exploring our extensive grounds to trips further afield - the New Forest, Swanage, London and Wales - children learn through real experiences and certainly not just worksheets. Workshops, speakers and project-based learning bring added depth and excitement to the curriculum and bring it further to life. CURRICULUM PROJECTS MAP SPECIALIST TEACHING & ENRICHMENT Alongside their class teachers, children learn with specialists in: PE Performance Music Forest School Outdoor Education IT Modern Foreign Languages CURRICULUM RHYTHM & THE SCHOOL DAY We follow a full timetable, but teachers can extend activities when children are deeply engaged, making up time later - because meaningful learning matters more than ticking boxes. SCHOOL TIMINGS: Fireflies: 7.30am – 6.30pm Years R–3: 8:15am – 3:20pm Years 4–6: 8:30am – 3:30pm Each day includes five class periods, breaks, lunch and optional ECAs at lunchtime and after school. For Reception class through to Year 6, we also run our: Sunrise Sessions (breakfast club) from 7.30am – including a delicious breakfast Sunset Sessions (late-stay club) which runs until 5.30pm – including a tasty light tea TRANSITIONING INTO YEAR 7 Unlike most schools, Year 6 for us is about high-level enrichment and having an amazing time in your final year of primary education. All children in Year 6 are invited to join Year 7, and we then put a support flightpath of activities, information and experiences to help along the way and to make that step as easy and enjoyable as we can. Whether that be chatting to current Year 7s and asking those juicy questions that only children will answer in their unique and honest way, having a day in the life of a Year 7 or meeting their new tutor and tutor group before we break for the summer holidays… there is a great deal in place to ensure we build upon the positive momentum that Year 6 gives the children and also plenty of opportunity for new year 7 faces and families to touch base, check-in and start building those all-important relationships. OUR STAFF We recruit teachers who are imaginative, brave, caring and willing to think differently. Teachers who know children deeply and create joyful, meaningful learning environments. This shared spirit builds a powerful dynamic of trust, happiness and authenticity — the foundation of everything in the Junior School. OUR STAFF
