Last week Year 11 and 12 boarders thoroughly enjoyed the Casino night with lots of different games on offer. The recently renovated gym continues to be a popular option mid-week a long with games in the sports hall. Last weekend was a busy one. On Friday, a number of boarders went Ice skating, and all had a great time. On Saturday some of our boarders performed in the Farnham Christmas light switch on event. A minibus full of students went along to support and enjoy the performances and the light switch on. On Sunday Guilford started its Christmas celebrations with a festive fun day which was also well attended by our boarders. 1/7 OUTDOOR MATHS The children had a challenge sheet of X10, X100 or X1000. They needed to work out the answer, find it somewhere in the playground and then write down the letter on the back of the answer card. All the letters they collected were an anagram. They worked out that it said ‘Year 5 are Stars!.’ The children loved spending the maths lesson in the fresh air and worked well in teams to answer the questions and crack the anagram. 1/21 SPORTS AMBASSADORS NUTRITION IN SPORT TALK Last Friday afternoon our GCSE and A-level PE students along with the sports ambassadors attended a talk in the Aldridge theatre on nutrition and performance. The talk was given by Amanda who qualified as a clinical nutritionist and now works for the school catering company and she gave the students a great talk on the importance of a balanced diet, the requirements for optimum sports performance and hydration. The students were also able to try some snacks and drinks that they could make to fuel their performance and aid recovery, including protein balls, smoothies and electrolyte drinks. Hopefully this gives the students an idea of how they can prepare their body for effectively for sport and will help in understanding the diet and nutrition exam modules. 1/1 YEAR 6 PREHISTORIC MUSEUM This term, the Year 6 topic is Evolution and the children were tasked with making a prehistoric model of their choice. It was fantastic to see each child’s creativity being showcased and to have such an array of art on display, it was truly amazing. We invited our parents in and the rest of the Junior School to share our incredible models. There was a brilliant buzz in the Ballroom this morning! 1/37 EARLY YEARS CERAMICS Our Nursery and Reception took a trip down to the ceramics studio this week to start making some beautiful festive decorations. 1/21 SPORTS REPORT SPORTS REPORT Under 16s Netball v Sherfield Frensham worked hard tonight in dark conditions. Sherfield were physical and athletic and made some fantastic intercepts. Frensham were too strong however, with some slick attacking movement and dominant defence. Frensham were very disciplined and focused tonight and Sherfield were out skilled by these fantastic girls on this occasion. The final score was 20-5, a strong win for Frensham. Players of the match were Heidi and Lily who were both outstanding tonight for very different reasons. Weydon away next week, which will be a tough one! Under 10s Netball v Churchers A great away game for our U10 netballers against a strong team at Churcher's! The first quarter saw an early goal from the opposition thanks to their quick passing and use of space. The Frensham team tried to gain possession but were following the ball rather than marking their players. In the second quarter, the team focused on marking their players, holding their position on the D and making use of the space on court, which helped slow the opposition down. At half time, it was a 2-0 lead for Churcher's. Heading into the third quarter, the team had settled and were making impressive interceptions which enabled them to move the ball into their attacking third swiftly! Frensham had a few shots which fell just short of some goals and a third goal was scored by Churcher's. The final quarter was a hot bed of passes, interceptions, snatches for the ball and near misses but finished with Georgia scoring a goal just before the end of the game! Well done to all who played and well done to Georgia for being selected as Player of the Match. 1/1 U11 Girls Football Tournament On Friday evening the U11 girls played in the Aspire plate girls football tournament. This was for local junior schools and played at Weydon. Frensham played three games against Potter‘s Gate, St Peter’s and Polycarps. The girls approached this with an amazing attitude and worked hard in every game. They came up against some very strong opposition but didn’t let this deter them as they got stuck in to every tackle, tried to pass the ball and work on their spacing. Frensham lost narrowly in all three games but showed lots of promise for their fixtures in spring term. Well done to the whole team. 1/1 U15 Football v Bedales The U15s put last week’s defeat behind them with a convincing win over a good Bedales side. The opposition started the game stronger and took the lead, however Frensham adapted their play and asserted their dominance, passing the ball with confidence and creating a whole host of chances. Jack, Zach and Adnan all on the scoresheet to put the game out of sight. Bedales mounted a comeback with two goals in quick succession but the defence steadied the ship and then Adnan waltzed past 4 defenders to place the ball in the back of the net. Frensham took the victory 5-3. Well done all. U13B Football v Bedales The U13s suffered defeat this week at the hands of Bedales. The game was end to end and both teams had spells of possession without being able to provide the end product. This made it tough work for our Frensham team who had to cover a lot of ground. Bedales went 1-0 up through a penalty half way though the first half, the game remained very even until the half-time whistle. In the second half Bedales were clinical and took both their chances to put the game beyond Frensham and win 3-0. There were lots of positives for this relatively inexperienced team to work on and we look forward to the tournament at Mayville next week. U14/15 Netball Vs Farnborough Hill This week’s game was away at Farnborough Hill. Frensham started off very strong with the first center pass which resulted in our first goal of the game. From the offset the team worked well and were eager to get a win. Throughout the game Frensham showed some brilliant netball with some fantastic movement up and down the court. The defense was incredible and made it very difficult for Farnborough Hill to get the ball in the ‘D’ which resulted in many interceptions. In the first quarter Frensham were out in front with some brilliant goals scored by Georgia and Sophie. The movement around the ‘D’ was fantastic with everyone using the space on the court effectively. It was a great game for Frensham with the final score being 22-9 to Frensham. Well done to everyone that played. U10 Netball Vs Churcher’s College Junior School This week’s game was away at Churcher’s College Junior School playing five a side. The team was very excited from the minute they got onto the minibus. Once we arrived, we got straight into a warm up and then had a quick team chat before the first quarter was underway. Frensham took the first center and showed some brilliant netball from the offset. The first two quarters were quite tight and both teams played some lovely Netball. Frensham worked hard throughout the whole game with improvements being made each quarter. By the third and fourth quarter Frensham were making some lovely movement up and down the court, especially from Charlotte who showed some fantastic movement when receiving a pass. The defense played extremely well, Ava and Charlotte made some brilliant interceptions stopping Churcher’s from getting into the ‘D’. We also showed some brilliant passes into our shooters who were eager to get a goal and who were moving round the ‘D’ to try and get away from their defenders. It was a great game and every played extremely well with some great improvements to their game. Well done to every that played and on to the next game. Under 12s Netball v Ditcham - From Poppy It was an excellent game. With a very close final score of 4-5 to Ditcham. Our centre passes were brilliant and when we were driving forward for the ball, we were working our way up the court really well. In training, we need to work on over head throws and getting in front of the player. 1/1 Under 13s Netball v Ditcham - From Dulcie This week myself and the Year 8 team played Ditcham Park School away. We were off to a good start from the first quarter, taking a strong early lead. Ditcham responded by reshuffling their team which meant the middle two quarters were more challenging for Frensham but we dug in and kept adding more goals, managing to maintain a strong lead. For the last quarter it was Frensham's turn to change up the team and we had a fantastic end to the game. The defence was amazing thanks to Marni, Maria and Ivy. The attacking was also superb. Sienna and Myla had great connection with the ball and really helped it get up the court to Violet and myself. In the last quarter we swapped Violet in to centre and the match really did take off as she was flying around the pitch intercepting almost every ball. The well deserved players of the match were Marni and Sienna. The final score was 17-1 to Frensham!!! Another great game. 1/1 Under 13s Football v Farleigh (ISFA Cup) This was true cup tie that had it all! Two teams with not much between them going at each other to create a fantastic spectacle for the many supporters that lined the sidelines. Farleigh had the edge in the first half are were getting forward with speed and in numbers but Frensham dealt with everything well in a calm and yet physical manner. They did take a 1-0 lead into the half time break but the boys knew they would get chances. The first chance came post half time chat where we discussed the importance of the counter attack at speed, Alfie and Will played out from the back and a through ball to Otto was inch perfect and he beat the goalkeeper to the ball to slide the ball into the back on the net. The boys continued to soak up play, putting bodies on the lines with blocks and physicality. Another quick counterattack, this time down the right from otto who beat two players and when he pulled into back to Fin a last gasp touch from Farleigh prevented another goal. Tomos was superb in goal making several fine saves as pressure began to build, as talk of extra time and penalties on the sidelines started a stunning strike from 20 yards won the game for Farleigh in the closing moments of the game. A fantastic match today! Under 9s Football v Churchers A tough game today with Churcher’s dominating the game but some great resilience and commitment on display from Frensham who never game up. Lex bagged himself a fine goal that involved some great dribbling and a cool finish. Leopold made a sensational save from a penalty and Aubrey made some great tackles throughout a made life very difficult for the opposition. Old Frenshamians Catch Up Our Head of Hockey went on the road to catch up with two Old Frenshamians last weekend! Alicia studying at Warwick University and playing in the 2s. Sam at Nottingham Trent playing in the 3rds, one of the best university hockey set ups in the country! Well done to Both! Great to see students still playing after Frensham! Hopefully both can make it back soon for a staff game! 1/2 OUTSIDE SCHOOL OUTSIDE SCHOOL MUSIC EXAM SUCCESS Ernest Yr 10 just passed his Grade 8 piano exam. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 19th May, 2023 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM LAURA Dear Parents It has been another incredibly busy week at Frensham. Our open morning last Saturday was a tremendous success where students, staff and existing parents came together to share how wonderful Frensham is to prospective families. The morning began in the theatre with welcome talks before Louis played the piano and in doing so, demonstrated the Frensham spirit of courage and resilience. Following this, Lila, Alexander and Finn from Year 6 confidently took to the stage to read their mini TED Talk on the subject that they had chosen and independently researched; LGBTQIA+, racism and climate change. The student panel as always provided the icing on the cake as students provided their refreshing, confident and funny reflections about Frensham. One of my priorities for this term is to reconnect as a community. I was delighted to welcome parents from across the school to the Town Hall event on Monday evening. This proved a fruitful event where the new leadership team were able to introduce themselves and answer questions about their roles and their areas of the school. Thank you to all of the parents who joined us and made this event such a success. Thank you to Jo from Parent Voice who took notes for those parents who could not make the event, these will be circulated to parents shortly. On Tuesday we hosted the OF Art exhibition. This event was attended by the Frensham community past and present. The artwork on show was a wonderful reflection of our vibrant, creative and talented community. Thank you to all involved in making these events a great success. On Wednesday night 100 families from Year 9, Year 10 and external prospective Sixth Form families attended the Introduction to Sixth Form Evening. This was an opportunity for students and parents to find out more about Sixth Form life and about the wide range of subjects that we offer. All of these events have provided a much needed and welcome opportunity to reconnect. An opportunity for staff to talk to parents, to have conversations to discuss their children, to talk about the future and get to know each other once again. However, these evenings cannot happen without the commitment and dedication of the wonderful staff team at Frensham. From housekeeping to catering, teaching staff to Marketing and Admissions. Our staff go over and above to make Frensham the special place that it is and I am incredibly proud to be leading such a wonderful team. Wishing you all a restful and happy weekend, Laura A MESSAGE FROM NICK CLICK FOR NICK'S MESSAGE HOMEWORK SURVEY TICK POSTER LYMES DISEASE SAFEGUARDING UPDATE FROM JACK AND JO This week has been Mental Health Awareness Week and while assessment week for Years 7,8 and 9 might not initially seem like a good match for this, I hope that the Frensham way we have done this has enabled the children to navigate this week successfully. We hope that they have gained some experience of revision and exams as well as resilience when facing a challenge. When they come across external exams later in their school careers, the experience of this week should help them to succeed in dealing with these. I hope that the current Year 11s and 13s, who are doing their external exams, are drawing on similar experiences right now. Of course, we have given them fun activities in the afternoons and all day on Friday to help with this too and we have also been pleased to see Years 10 and 12 enjoying their Life in the Sixth Form and Life After Frensham activities. Giving them this time is unusual during a traditional ‘exam week’ but, we think, really beneficial for them. Spending time outside lessons having fun with their friends is a genuine tonic at this time. Young people today face so many challenges and mental health is a huge part of safeguarding across the whole country. Nobody can do this alone and so we want to work with any of you facing challenges with Mental Health in your families. Part of this is signposting you to expert support and so please click here to view a leaflet put together by the school Health Centre with a number of charities and agencies that are really great and offer this support to anyone and all of us when we need it. Best wishes, Jo and Jack OUR FACULTY SYSTEM A rich, progressive curriculum is one where students are offered the opportunity to make connections in their learning and build networks between the knowledge and skills they develop within disciplines. The arbitrary bounds that define subjects are drawn to create a legacy of closely related information, silos of knowledge that can be understood by those in the academic field up and down the chain of development: for example, subject-specific definitions are needed for the purposes of effective communication, so that students in any particular field are able to ‘talk the same language’ and can compare and exchange their understanding. Of course, this is necessary for the specialisation demanded by academic development. ‘Freezing’ in science may specifically refer to the temperature at which a change of state occurs in materials when liquids become solids, but in English Literature, may be understood as being uncomfortably cold. It is essential that students understand the use of language, theory and the bounds of knowledge within a subject. But it is also essential that students understand how subjects are connected, but that the bounds of knowledge that define disciplines are not steadfastly drawn and finite. To encourage cross-curricular understanding, collaboration and creative thinking, we must encourage students’ intellectual curiosity when thinking about the relationships between studies. One way of achieving this is to bring similar subjects together to encourage opportunities for building collaborative learning opportunities and celebrate the commonalities between subjects. Another is to challenge thought about seemingly opposing and unrelated subjects and encourage students and staff to find links for their learning and their academic progress. Frensham’s faculty structure aims to bring similar and different subjects to the same table to create the kind of information sharing and cross-curricular activities that are the hallmark of progressive education: an education that moves students’ interests forward in their own directions, enabling them to flourish by creating stronger links between their studies, more closely mirroring the interconnected and interdependent world we inhabit. EXCITING PASTORAL NEWS We are pleased to announce that from September we will have Pastoral and Progress Leaders from Years 7-11 and new roles within sixth form. This will give another layer of pastoral care and support to further strengthen this important responsibility. Although Tutors will always be a parents first point of contact, it allows for one person to oversee each year group as a whole and manage their needs fully. In sixth form we will have Alison responsible for all pastoral needs and Pippa overseeing their academic progress. Jo as Assistant Head Pastoral, will then oversee years 7-13. We understand this may affect tutor groups and any changes to these will be announced before the end of term. FRIENDS OF FRENSHAM NEWS CHANGES TO THE STRUCTURE OF FOF We would like to give a very big thank-you to Louise Wheeler who has been the FOF chair for the past few years. Louise was instrumental in reviving FOF after COVID and helped FOF on its journey to becoming a charity but has decided to step down now that FOF is in a much healthier place and we wish her all the very best. We would also like to thank Erika Thomas a founding member of the board who did an amazing job guiding us along the path to becoming a charity. Erika is now stepping down to focus on her family more. As part of these changes, we have had a re-jig in roles and have been lucky enough to see our FOF community grow. We now have a strong list of regular volunteers who help out with different events as well as our board, committee and comms reps. THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM THIS WEEK YEAR 10 MOCK JOB INTERVIEWS If you were a biscuit, what type of biscuit would you be? And why? What a great start to the week by Year 10. Lyall led an hour-long careers workshop focussed on how to survive a job interview by recognising the common questions asked (so you can be prepared how to answer), the importance of dress code and body language, and how to nail that welcome handshake. Students then had a two-hour window to work on ambitious marketing campaigns for their activewear product design – creating a billboard poster, 15-second digital advert and a pitch to industry experts. All the while they were being called out to attend a job interview to put into practice the ideas and concepts learned in the opening session. Almost sixty students coming into the “interview hub” in waves to face the questions from one of the volunteer interviewers. Despite the nerves, the students came through unscathed – and as expected – from initial anxiety, they went on to speak with growing confidence and eloquence – some even said they enjoyed the experience! Hannah added; “It was very helpful and I got to understand what an interview is actually like because I had no idea.” Imogen commented; “It was fun. My interviewer was nice and and it was good for experience.” Thea said of the experience; “I felt very comfortable and they were very patient with me. They reviewed me after which was very helpful, giving me more efficient words I could answer with. 10/10 - would defo do again.” With thanks to parents Kevin, Mark, Terry, Debbie, Albert, and Sandra and additional interviews from teachers Colin, James, and Niah; we couldn’t have run the session without your support and willing. Thank you. VILLAGE TRAINING Year 8 spent the afternoons this week and all day Friday in various workshops and activities preparing for their stay in the Village in June. The students made spoons in DT to use while they're in the Village, started setting up the camp and practised t heir fire building skills. 1/25 FRENSHAM COMMUNITY ART EXHIBITION On Wednesday evening, we held the launch event for the inaugural Frensham Community Art Exhibition. On return of their residential trip to Swanage, Year 5 recreated Corfe Castle using the outdoor play equipment, while Year 6 developed their understanding of Pie Charts in the drop off zone. What an amazing day! 1/35 1/29 YEARS 3-6 PROBLEM SOLVING COMPETITION On Tuesday this week 12 children from Years 3-6 took part in a Satro Problem Solving competition at More House School against three other schools. The children worked in two teams; Years 3 and 4 together, and Years 5 and 6 together. The children were set the challenge of building a marble run using only the limited materials provided. They were given 90 minutes to complete their marble run and the big challenge was that it they had to make it so that the marble would take 10 seconds to go down the run. The children worked expertly in teams and showed great resilience when they came across problems with their runs. The Years 5 and 6 team achieved 11 seconds on their first run, on their second chance the marble took 10.35 seconds to complete the marble run!! They won the Years 5 and 6 competition hands down! The Year 3 and 4 team's marble took 6 seconds, which was a great effort - they came second overall. The children were an asset to Frensham and did brilliantly. 1/13 GREENPOWER This week we had a lot of work to do which the team were very enthusiastic about, Richie, Edward and Elijah started to put on the stub axles. Richard (one of our governors) helped those who are interested in telemetry and coding, he was very patient and very knowledgeable! Frankie, Ava and Maria worked on the aerodynamics at the back of the car, so far we have made one prototype out of card, less drag = more laps!!! Team Profile: Name: Aragon Likes: Gaming, cars, F1, Racing, Food Dislikes: Breaking his arm 🙁 Favorite subject: Dt Why I applied: I love F1 and thought that it would be a great opportunity to design and build a car then race it! 1/2 YEAR 7 ECO DAY Year 7 started their Eco Day enjoying woodland games. It was wonderful to see them letting off some steam after their busy week of exams. We then changed the mood and moved to the theatre to watch one of the Our Planet series as an introduction to our Eco Heights programme of study in Science and Geography. The remainder of the day was spent in workshops understanding the nutrient cycle and our plastic waste issue. Students applied their learning to the nutrient cycle by creating performances for the peers to explain the process. The ‘Rubbish’ workshop asked students to consider and rank waste rates of different items and led on to discussions around solutions which will be followed up in our Eco curriculum. We finished the day with a fun games activity on the field. 1/4 CATERING RECIPE BOXES Callie helped out with some presentations from catering companies tendering for our contract and really enjoyed making the macaroni cheese from the recipe ideas they shared with her. 1/4 YEAR 12 ESCAPE ROOM As part of the Year 12 Employability and Life Skills session, we had an escape room team in to run the show. 1/11 YEAR 10 MUSIC TRIP TO WICKET Year 10 GCSE Music students went to see Wicked in London on Wednesday. As always, please contact amylee@frensham.org if anything is yours. 1/7 SPORTS REPORT SPORTS REPORT Under 15 Cricket v Boundary Oak What a game of cricket this was. It started with Boundary Oaks opening batsmen hitting 3 massive sixes and retiring on 29 runs after just 11 balls. We then bowled really well and managed to restrict them to 84-4 off their 15 Overs. The pick of the bowlers was Lexie with 2 overs 1 wicket for 7 runs. We then set about chasing the total. Archie and Miller started really positively against some tight Boundary Oak bowling. We then started to lose wickets at regular intervals but Archie managed to keep us up with the run rate. He retired on 26 runs and when our 9th wicket fell, he came back in needing 15 to win from 9 balls. Zac and Archie then got us to needing 8 off the last 2 balls and Zac hit a four leaving us 4 to win off the last ball. Unfortunately, he wasn’t quite able to achieve this but what an effort. Boundary Oak won by 3 runs. U11 Cricket It was brilliant to see 22 keen cricketers representing Frensham in the junior school on Wednesday afternoon. This week we travelled to Bedales Dunhurst. On Rory’s pitch the team faced some skilled cricketers however Frensham approached it with a great attitude and spirit throughout. Frensham batted first and set Bedales a total of 226, Carter the pick of the batters playing some lovely shots to find the boundary. Bedales chased down the total and went on to win the match. Alexander bowled well including a brilliant moment of fielding off his own delivery to run a pair out. Well done to the whole team on a great effort and for some their first cricket fixture. On Phil’s pitch the team were up against a tough opposition with some experienced cricketers. The team did a great job in a pairs cricket format with Eve and Madeline scoring well in their two overs. Fin and George scored well with a couple of boundaries before losing a couple of weeks late in their two batting overs. Poppy started off the bowling well and bowled a consistent line and length and made life difficult for the Bedales batters. A few players getting their first experience of a cricket match and despite the defeat great to see so many involved enjoying the afternoon. 1/1 U9 Cricket The U9 cricket team were back in action this week, with one team taking on Ditcham on the Astro. Frensham batted first and set Ditcham a total of 259, showing a greater understanding of communication between the wickets and some great shot technique. Ditcham cam into bat and it was an incredibly close run chase with the visitors winning by just 6 runs to reach a total of 265. Again, the improvement in bowling technique from the first game was huge and it was great to see everyone bowling overarm deliveries confidently. Well done all, we look forward to the next one! 1/1 Fixture Calendar A reminder that you can see all fixtures for the half term on the SOCS sport frensham website, team selection activates on Thursdays the week before matches. • Boarding | Frensham Heights

BOARDING Each of our boarding houses has its own dedicated residential team and, as the children grow up through the school, there is a natural progression of increased freedom matched with increased responsibility. Boarding at Frensham, like the whole school, is built on a very firm basis of mutual respect. Students are probably given more freedom than in other schools, but with that comes greater responsibility and ultimately a better understanding of how to live and behave beyond the school and home environments. QUICK LINKS YEARS 7 TO 9 YEARS 10 & 11 SIXTH FORM ACTIVITIES A NATURAL BALANCE Within our beautiful environment, Frensham is able to offer the perfect natural balance of home and structure. During the day, boarders are indistinguishable from day students, sharing the same classrooms, day houses and lunchroom, but as the day ends they head to one of our two boarding houses. Hamilton House provides a cosy base for our boarders in Years 7 to 9. Main House offers stunning views of the Surrey Hills for our Year 10 & 11 boarders and Roberts House brings together more grownup accommodation, day studies and social spaces for our Sixth Form students. All boarding houses are coeducational. In both houses the boys and girls have separate dormitories with shared social areas. Tech and WIFI are monitored and phones are stored away at night for the younger years. Prep time is set and a huge range of activities are organised from basketball to cooking plus shopping and cinema trips. Weekends, in particular, follow the flow and pattern that is family life with busier Saturdays and lazier Sundays. Throughout all there is a natural progression of what is expected from the youngest through to the oldest – a sliding scale of structure, freedom and responsibility. PASTORAL Our boarding houses are like big families – full of sisters and brothers, chatter and laughter, excitement and calm. It can’t be home, but it’s as close as you can get without being at home. In both of our boarding houses, great emphasis is placed on the creation of a caring community which shares a philosophy based on mutual respect, enthusiasm and enjoyment of each other’s company and achievements. We aim to develop tolerant, friendly attitudes and good personal relationships. In school, we try to minimise the distinction between boarding and day students, and we welcome students from around the world. OPTIONS As with most things at Frensham, we understand that one size never fits all so we have a few different boarding options to cover whatever works for your family: FULL BOARDING Full boarding is what it says on the tin - 7 days a week. WEEKLY BOARDING Weekly boarding is Sunday pm to Thursday pm. FLEXI BOARDING Flexi boarding is the same three days every week. OCCASIONAL BOARDING Occasional boarding is adhoc on a first come, first serve basis - 2 days equivalent per week/per term for Years 7-9 and 1 day for Years 10 and up. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Our boarding houses include many students from different cultures, nationalities and backgrounds. We welcome boarders from overseas, and believe that the diversity of ideas, experiences and perspectives they bring enriches our boarding community. Our experienced house parents get to know all of our residential students really well and they benefit from a very special home-like setting. Our less formal environment also lends itself to making life long friends so students will go home knowing that their Frensham experience will continue well into the future. YEARS 7 TO 9: HAMILTON HOUSE Hamilton House is home to our youngest boarders in Years 7 to 9. Students and residential staff live, study, socialise and relax together in what feels far more like a family home than a boarding house. Coeducational, in keeping with our ethos and like all our boarding houses, boys and girls sleep on separate floors – both alarmed to make sure there is no confusion over which students should be where and at what time. They share common areas for a wide variety of boarding activities - movie and games nights, cookery, yoga and more - not to mention coming together each evening to get their prep done. HAMILTON YRS 10 & 11: MAIN HOUSE Main House is our coeducational boarding house for students in Years 10 and 11, with girls on one side, boys on the other and common rooms in between. It is a welcoming house where teenagers can live, study, socialise and relax together. Students are given a bit more freedom and with that more responsibility. There are clear expectations about behaviour and respect in a shared living environment. All our boarding houses rely on this strong basis of mutual respect. Boarders can access the house at lunch time and after school, but they are encouraged to be out socialising with day students and taking part in clubs and fixtures. There is allocated quiet time for prep and often house activities or inter-house activities are organised such as football, cooking or a movie night. MAIN ROBERTS SIXTH FORM: ROBERTS HOUSE Roberts House is our Sixth Form hub. It is much more than a boarding house as Sixth Form day students also have studies here. Sixth Form notices, social events, study sessions and some classes also take place here. It is somewhere students can go during free periods to study and find a bit of peace and quiet. Male and female students have single rooms on separate sides with common rooms in between. Central to Roberts House is Colette, the matron, who offers a friendly ear, a comforting hug or just a cup of tea when the students need a bit of emotional support. Sixth Form boarders can take all their meals in the dining hall, but there are also two kitchens in Roberts House which they can use. Sixth Formers have more freedom than the other boarders - which comes with more responsibility. ACTIVITIES Boarding life begins when the school day ends. It obviously can’t be fun and games all the time, but evenings and weekends are all about striking the right balance between structured activities, homework and relaxation. Working around prep time and quiet time, evenings and weekends can see boarders really taking advantage of the school site and its facilities. COMMON EVENING ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: • basketball in the sports hall • running/walking in the woods • cooking and arts and crafts • movie and quiz nights We also sometimes go off site for dinner, bowling or the cinema. We don’t have Saturday school, so there is time for a broad range of activities and trips. COMMON WEEKEND ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: • shopping trips to London and Guildford • trips to leisure centres and water parks • supermarket runs to stock up on tuck • trips to restaurants and cinemas • photography and art workshops • sports workshops • high ropes and mountain biking • movie nights and discos In our aim to have our boarding life mirror family life as much as possible, we tend to have a fairly busy Saturday followed by a quieter Sunday. BOARDERS WEEKEND At the beginning of every school year, we hold a Boarders Weekend when all boarders, full and weekly, stay for an activity packed weekend designed so that everyone - boarders and staff - can get to know one another. It is always a really wonderful introduction to the school and our boarding community. ACTIVITIES

SENIOR SCHOOL: YEARS 9 TO 11 Emotionally and socially, these can be tricky years for all teenagers to navigate and this is where the strong relationships and outstanding pastoral care at Frensham can really give them the chance to enjoy what can be very stressful years. Our focus has never been exam results. Our focus is the children - their individuality, their happiness and their unique potential - and the importance of retaining all this as they grow up through their educational journey. If we can help them all achieve more than they believed they could, then we have succeeded. If we can do that while keeping them emotionally happy and strong, then we have more than won. lunch on the lawn older students have lunch on the lawn in front of a beautiful view textiles in DT older students work on textile projects in the DT workshop science project students work together on a science project lunch on the lawn older students have lunch on the lawn in front of a beautiful view 1/9 QUICK LINKS TEACHING & LEARNING YR 10 OPTIONS CURRICULUM PASTORAL CARE ADMISSIONS Listen to Jo, one of our Assistant Heads, and Beverley, our Director of Support for Learning talk about life in the Senior School. SENIOR SCHOOL: YEARS 9 TO 11 With a more informal setting and smaller classes, the teachers and students really get to know each other. Literally on a first-name basis. This is important because we ask our students to step up and be more responsible and self-motivated than they may need to be elsewhere. We don’t micro-manage, we do support, but ultimately it’s down to each child to take control of their learning. Teachers learn each child’s strengths and weaknesses. They reinforce where needed and push where they can, but most importantly, they are a friendly face. They genuinely want to help, not to intimidate or belittle. As long as you do your best, take a few risks, step out of your comfort zone now and then, Frensham can support you with whatever your dreams may be. TEACHING & LEARNING TEACHING & LEARNING Years 9 to 11 are formative years for all students not only academically, but emotionally and socially. As with most mainstream schools, we follow the GCSE curriculum and assessment processes. This does mean that during these years our teaching and learning is closely curriculum-led, but we do our best to continuously support our students’ personal passions and interests. Rather than focusing only on the exam results, our aim is to give our students the knowledge and the thinking skills - creativity, problem-solving, flexibility, resilience - to take on whatever may turn up on the exams, but also in life beyond. TUTOR GROUPS Students are split into tutor groups with their tutor taking a pastoral role, gently supporting and getting to know each of the students in their care. Tutor groups will normally stay the same through Years 9 to 11 with four tutor groups per year. Year 9 is a common entry point, particularly for boarders, with a handful of spaces sometimes available in Year 10. CURRICULUM At Frensham, we treat academic and creative subjects equally and within the younger years particularly, our aim is to offer a very broad curriculum allowing each child to find their own strengths and passions and ultimately helping them determine a strong sense of where they might like to focus going forward. Year 9 is a transition year finishing off Key Stage 3 and heading into the GCSE years. Maths, MFL and Science GCSE curriculums begin in Year 9 to allow for adequate time to study all elements unrushed. curriculum YEAR 9 CURRICULUM BREAKDOWN Most students study fifteen compulsory subjects, including one language that they would like to specialise in. They remain in their tutor groups for everything except PE, languages, English, Science and Maths. Students in Year 9 attend one PSHE lesson per week. Students have 30 lessons a week. Year 9 has five 55 minute lessons and one 45 minute lesson daily. The number of lessons listed below is per week: English: 3 lessons Maths: 4 lessons Science: 3 lessons Geography: 2 lessons History: 2 lessons Personal, Social, Health Education: 1 lesson Philosophy, Religion, Ethics: 1 lesson IT: 1 lesson Modern Languages: 3 lessons PE/Games: 3 lessons Creative Arts: 3 lessons Music: 1 lesson Dance: 1 lesson Drama: 1 lesson Tutor Time/Morning Talk: 1 lesson OPTIONS Most students take 10 GCSEs or alternative qualifications. English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Science: Trilogy (three strands leading to two GCSEs) or Separate Science (leading to three GCSEs) – are compulsory. In addition, it is expected that all students choose at least one Creative or Performing Arts subject and it is recommended that students choose one Humanity and one Modern Language to create their own broad curriculum. Students have 30 lessons a week. Years 10 and 11 have six 55 minute lessons. The number of lessons listed below is per week: English Language: 2 lessons English Literature: 2 lessons Maths: 4 lessons Science: 6 lessons PE/Games: 3 lessons Options: 3 lessons Tutor Time/Morning Talk: 1 lesson PE, Games, Outdoor Education, PRE and PSHE will continue to be an integral part of your curriculum at Frensham. PSHE will take the format of a series of short courses throughout Years 10 and 11. GCSES PATHWAYS: GCSE & BTEC We pride ourselves on offering a wide range of subjects to ensure that you can create your own unique broad curriculum. Our option blocks are built each year based on student choices - therefore, they differ every year. This gives us a much greater flexibility to make sure that you can create your own curriculum. We are always looking for ways to ensure that we are offering our students a wide range of subject choice for our Year 10 students. With eighteen GCSE subjects on offer, we are confident that we are doing this. However, it is important that we regularly review our offering to ensure that we are meeting the needs of each new cohort of students. YR 10 OPTIONS BOOKLET RESULTS FIND OUT MORE OUR PROSPECTUS SENIOR SCHOOL BOOKLET GCSE BOOKLET PATHWAYS VISIT US Year 11 Revision

  • Our Curriculum | Frensham Heights

OUR CURRICULUM Our curriculum is intentionally broad to offer each student both a thorough grounding in a diverse timetable of creative, scientific, physical and theoretical subjects, but also to give them each the chance to find their own passions and interests. Subjects are interwoven, giving a depth of understanding and experience that is often lacking in a more traditional curriculum. QUICK LINKS EARLY YEARS JUNIOR SCHOOL MIDDLE SCHOOL SENIOR SCHOOL SIXTH FORM A BROAD CURRICULUM At Frensham, we treat academic and creative subjects equally and our aim is to offer a very broad curriculum allowing each child to find their own strengths and passions. Creativity at Frensham is not limited to the creative subjects. We look for creativity of thought in all our subjects – to look at things a bit differently, to consider a different approach to the norm. In this way, we hope each student can find their own way to be engaged, that teachers can find a way to get everyone excited. ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE At Frensham, our team of responsive, experienced English teachers help inspire the students with a love of literature. Although we need to take account of exam requirements, we aim to create a culture that produces well-rounded and thoughtful learners who engage with each other, with the texts and with the issues they raise in the wider world. We encourage students to be passionate about English and enjoy reading - to ask questions, look for answers and make critical judgements. Active learning is at the heart of what the students do - looking not just at the how but the why, and so gaining a better understanding of the process of learning and their own abilities. Expectations and aspirations are high, but relevant to each individual, and we value all manner of talents. Regular formative assessments and assignments allow us to monitor progress and make adjustments so that every student has the opportunity to reach their full and unique potential. English is a core component of our curriculum from Nursery up through the GCSE years. As the children grow and develop in their own time, our aim is that students develop a love and appreciation for our subject. English is the foundation of everything we do. Our goal is for all our students to not only read and write effectively but to genuinely enjoy themselves and develop a sense of self-confidence. MATHS Our Maths teachers are really passionate about their subject and they genuinely want all their students to engage with and enjoy their classes. Confidence can often be an issue in Maths, but our small class sizes and friendly, informal class settings are the first steps in clearing this hurdle. The students, as with everything at Frensham, are at the centre of a safe, non-competitive teaching environment. All are encouraged to speak up and get involved, supporting one another and working together. Those who are naturally stronger will be challenged to expand and explore, those who need a slower pace will be supported and encouraged. The teachers structure their coursework around those students coming into their classes each year. The aim is for the students to really understand what they're learning and not just go through the motions for the sake of an exam or a grade. They are encouraged to work collaboratively through tasks and investigations - to present problems and share and discuss ideas and solutions - to really understand how what they're learning applies to life outside the classroom. SCIENCE The main aim of our Science department is to take the students on a journey from the youngest children through Sixth Form gaining the skills, knowledge and confidence to leave Frensham thinking like a scientist. With this wider understanding, they are ready for what might show up on an exam, but also much more than that. They will have the confidence to tackle what's put in front of them but also the courage to take risks and the willingness to learn. Our Science facilities are modern and facilitate group work and active participation of all students. Our teachers all have their own teaching style, but they all encourage students to take risks and explore -to feel that it's okay to get things wrong and make mistakes because that's how they learn. Try it - if it doesn't work, then learn from it - discuss, observe and try again. CREATIVE ARTS If you have stepped foot inside the Art & Design Centre at Frensham, you’ll know it’s simply breathtaking. Initially because of the outstanding facilities and equipment, but more powerfully for the breadth and quality of work on display. All students' work is displayed, not just that deemed better by a teacher, and the variety is immense and often challenging. This is not artwork created by following a prescriptive formula, but art created by students who are developing the courage to explore in their own way. That in itself is a gift which will benefit them no matter what they go on to do. Students have dedicated art classes from Nursery upwards. For the younger children, it’s all about getting excited about their art education and raising expectations of what they believe they can do. Our full art curriculum kicks off in Years 7 to 9 where students spend six hours a week, every week, exploring 2D, 3D and Design & Technology. Underpinning all is an experience of drawing, recording, investigating and exploring. The main goal is to develop willingness and enthusiasm and the courage to engage in the creative process. This builds confidence and ultimately self-esteem. Our primary aspiration is for our students to have the willingness and the courage to find their own creative voice – and once they have, to see the value in that. An important part of our classes throughout is discussion. Coming together to talk about their experiences, to learn to value their own work and the work of others. PERFORMING ARTS From Nursery through Year 9, music, dance and drama are all part of our curriculum. Everyone has a chance to get on stage and for those who crave the limelight, those opportunities can be many. The courage to get on stage is developed from an early age as is the ability to watch, listen and appreciate others. Aside from the bigger productions and concerts, students have dedicated time each week in the three performing arts and this is really where that confidence softly grows. Together, in a small group with a teacher they know well, they become comfortably uncomfortable. Tentatively stepping or leaping excitedly out of their comfort zones to the place where learning really happens. Each child is different and our teachers will get to know each so well that they will recognise where and how encouragement is needed, allowing even the most reluctant wallflower to have their time to shine. Along the way, reminding the most gregarious to step aside and let the others have their moment. So it’s not all about creating amazing dancers, singers and performers. Although we do that too! The performing arts serve another purpose at Frensham. They bring us together. Friends and families come together throughout the year to celebrate the spirit of our school. Whether it’s one of the amazing music and dance concerts, a musical, a big dramatic production, an informal recital or our Founders’ Day celebrations – our talented singers, dancers, actors, musicians, directors, designers, writers and teachers astound us constantly. Find out more about our Music School PE & SPORT Our commitment to extracurricular opportunities and outdoor education shows our deep belief that activities outside the classroom, inevitably, lead to further success within it as well. We recognise and embrace that every child is different. A limited view of sport can’t and won’t challenge and engage every child. It is only natural that Frensham has always respected the importance of sport in many forms. Our PE and games programme is broad and exciting. PE is compulsory and taught across the school by dedicated teachers. The curriculum includes traditional games such as cricket, tennis, rounders, football, hockey, swimming, athletics and netball as well as more alternative sports including basketball, handball, gymnastics and parkour. If a group of students are interested in a sport we don’t currently offer, we will do our best to get the equipment and knowledge and make it happen. We aim to provide sport for all regardless of ability and to motivate students to be active and healthy long into adulthood. Sporting fixtures are arranged with other schools and we take part in local and national league competitions. The aim is to make sport enjoyable with the emphasis on having a go and building skills through games, structured practices and, for those who enjoy them, highly competitive matches. Sports is part of our broad curriculum, as equal as all the other parts. We hope our students will love sport, love going to matches, win some, lose some and, most importantly, know how to win or lose well. We want our students to be fit and healthy, to get involved and include and value others. As with all areas of our curriculum, we challenge them to step outside their comfort zone and raise expectations of what they believe they can do. OUTDOOR EDUCATION At Frensham, we truly believe that as much, if not more, learning happens outside the classroom as within. Outdoor education has always been an intrinsic part of our curriculum from Forest Class for the Junior School through to very challenging expeditions for the older students. The programme for all activities begins with learning the skill set to prepare them for the experiential learning – the real adventures. As their practical skills develop and the experiences widen, the students develop massively in confidence, empathy, resilience, collaboration and communication. This is a real chance for those children whose courage may not come through in the classroom to really shine. Our onsite facilities are impressive – high-ropes, zipwire, climbing wall, bike trails and Jacob’s ladder to name a few. All activities and expeditions are run by staff who are constantly training and gaining further qualifications. It’s a real passion for students and staff alike with Frensham being the only school in the UK to hold the Gold Standard accreditation from The Association of Heads of Outdoor Education Centres. Students can also choose to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Award through to the Gold Award. Frensham truly aims to embed a spirit of adventure into all students from an early age. To let them develop the courage to take on risks and step out of their comfort zone as well as the skills, maturity and confidence to do it capably, wisely and kindly.

On Tuesday, Harrison, Lawrence and Cody from Worthy Earth gave a very well-received assembly introducing the project to our students and talk about their vision of creating a network of gardens and equipping future generations with the knowledge to care for the land and grow their own food. Today the students took the 10 minute walk to see the site of their future garden. The project will kick of properly after the Easter holidays. 1/5 YEAR 4 ASSEMBLY This term Year 4 have been learning about World War 2 as an immersive Topic which has been taught in many different subjects. Year 4 showcased everything they have learnt so far about this topic in their fun, interactive assembly last week to the parents and in an assembly this week to N-3. They are looking forward to going on their first residential based on World War Two next week. 1/24 GERMAN KARNEVAL Last week, German students from Year 6, 7 and 8 celebrated the start of the German Karneval season with a fabulous party at break time. They wore spectacular masks which they had made over half-term, tried an array of delicious German foods and enjoyed the party atmosphere! 1/9 COMPUTING LIVE! DISNEYLAND PARIS TRIP 17 GCSE and A-Level computer science student have just returned from a truly magical 4-day trip to Disneyland Paris. Whilst there, the students attended the Computing Live! conference and listened to inspirations speakers talk about how they use computer science and programming as part of their jobs. The aim of the trip was to engage students in the potential technology related careers they could pursue as well as to get them thinking about the impact computer science has at Disneyland – such as how the drone show is programmed as part of the finale, the queue waiting times prediction software and the QR scanners used to scan the tickets to name a few. The feedback was extremely positive with students feeling energized and engaged from listening to the speakers at the conference and they were given time to explore the park and have some fun experiencing the magic of Disneyland. 1/13 WORLD BOOK DAY Our Junior School children and teachers took part in a World Book Day parade and have been read to in small groups around the school. Older years have read with younger years and the teachers and support staff have shared their favourite books. The children looked incredible and the joy on their faces says it all. 1/46 HELICOPTER LANDING! The pilot had obviously asked for permission beforehand! 1/3 MATHS CHALLENGE The Maths department had 59 participants from Years 9/10/11 taking part in the Intermediate Maths Challenge on 1st February. This national competition comprises 60 minutes of mathematical reasoning and precision of thought. Best in Year 11: William A Best in Year 10: Millie S Best in Year 9, Gold Certificate winner and Best in School: James K All the students who took part were invited to a celebratory cake and certificate presentation event this week. 1/3 FOREST SCHOOL Nursery and Reception kicked this week off with a lovely forest school lesson. We came across a leaf mountain and developed our understanding of sharing, taking turns, safety when jumping alongside our classmates. They thoroughly enjoyed this aspect of the lesson. Who knew leave could be so much fun! Year 1 were inspired to make a fire and cook this week. We learnt how to assemble a fire for cooking, and discussed the ingredients for pancakes and understanding the basics behind knowing when food is cooked ready to eat. Yummy! Year 2 continued their project on transportation, but this time of children. Using the ropes system from a couple of weeks ago we were able to design a zip wire for the children to ‘zip down’ but also learnt about a pully mechanism so each child could be hoisted up by their peers before being released. Ingenious! Year 3 rounded continued building their bridge, this time using pre-existing logs of the bridge as a marker for measurement, using a bow saw, sawhorse and PPE to cut them to size. In addition, another group from year 3 took to creating woodland midnight creatures using clay and natural resources. Year 4 capped off the week with an amazing game of ‘Eagle Eye’ followed by developing their imaginative stories and delivering them to the rest of the class. 1/7 FABULOUS FIRE BRIGADE FRIDAY Not only was it Funky Friday and Fish Friday in the Early Years today, it was also Fabulous Fire Brigade Friday. Year 1 couldn’t resist and came along to join the ride too. We were super excited for our visit and were definitely not disappointed. We were joined by Red Watch from Farnham Fire Station, and after a talk in the classroom about what the fire brigade does and a demonstration of equipment including their breathing apparatus, we went to see the fire engine up close. We got to sit in the back, inspect all the equipment, and best of all use the hose to topple over a cone, which everyone was particularly good at, bar the teachers! 1/10 NEWSWISE CLUB Our Newswise club, brought the Frensham newsrooms to life reporting the highlights of the week at the Junior school. Children have had the opportunity to understand how reporters and editors work through the ‘News Wise ‘ club. This session they reported the Performance of the Beauty and The Beast, the year 5 Hockey match and the World Book day Parade. 1/5 GREENPOWER This week the team were very excited to get started, David, Harrison and Elijah started on the rear axel mounts and putting the seat in whilst Ava, Edward, Frankie and Maria worked on the front steering mounts. As the workshop was filled with the sounds of clanking spanners (we even managed not lose the 10mm socket... Joke for the petrol heads out there) Richie, Sully and CJ got grips with the in-helmet communication system, meticulously testing, and where needed repairing the headsets to ensure crystal clear comms! As we settle into roles a team profile will be introduced, since I have been writing the Greenpower newsletter for a few weeks now, I thought we would start with me: Juno! Name: Juno Likes : Crochet and being creative Dislikes: The cold Favorite Subject: English and History Why I applied: I applied so I could be part of an awesome experience and be a team player. 1/2 SPORTS REPORT SPORTS REPORT Under 9 Tag Rugby v Sherfield On Friday afternoon the U9 rugby team played in their second game of the season against Sherfield School. For many of the team it was their first experience of a rugby fixture, and it was amazing to see their positive attitude and approach to the game. The opposition had some talented players who started the game fast, and they quickly turned this into try's. Frensham didn't let this affect them though and got stuck in, showing a growing understanding of attacking play. We started to run attacking lines with the ball and quickly found gaps to score, Crofton and Mack amongst the scorers. The game swung from end to end but the visitors came out on top in a thoroughly enjoyable game. I was really impressed with everyone's attitude, and all showed great signs of improvement as the game went on and they became more confident. We look forward to the next one against Ditcham next Thursday. Under 18 Basketball v The Royal We had a great game against the Royal. It was very tight throughout and they had a couple of tall talented players. We dealt with this really well and matches their rebounding to ensure we got plenty of ball. All the players played at a great intensity throughout. Curtis topped scored again, but many others chipped in with important baskets and we won the game 23-21. Under 11/10 Hockey v More House Year 6 played against More House with determination this week. The strong force upfront meant that Frensham had majority possession and kept the pressure on More House, paired with a diligent defence that kept them at bay when they made it into our half. The team managed to score some very impressive goals, finishing with a score of 7-2 to Frensham. This week's year 5 match was against More House. More House had first push back and Frensham were ready for another match and hopefully another win. The team put on a great performance again with some lovely passing up and down the pitch. The improvement in their hockey has been fantastic to see and to see them grow as a team. In the first half we managed to score two goals which put us in the lead. After the second half More House managed to score their first goal of the game which put pressure on the team as they were so eager for a win. The defence worked hard to not let the ball past them in the second half as they did not want them to score another goal. After some great dribbling from one end of the pitch to the other Frensham managed to score another three goals in the final half which took the score to 5-1. It was a great game for the U10’s. Well done to everyone that played and on to the next game. Under 15s Basketball v St Edmund’s and Bedales We had a triangular tournament against St Eds and Bedales A and B. All the lads got to play loads of Basketball with everyone scoring points during the afternoon. We started by playing Bedales A and had a great game which went right down to the last buzzer when OK scored a basket and was fouled. He then needed to convert the free throw to draw the match. And sure enough he did. 19-19. We then played Bedales B and won convincingly scoring lots of baskets which gave all the lads confidence. 33-11. We then played the best basketball I’ve seen is play in our last game against St Eds, who were a very accomplished team and had beaten both Bedales teams. All the boys raised their games with Adnan, OJ and Lewis setting an incredible pace to the game. Miller and Harry both grabbed loads of rebounds and we won the game 25-15 which meant we won the tournament. Under 15s Hockey v Ditcham This week's match was against Ditcham on our home pitch. From the push back you could tell it was going to be an even and tough match. Ditcham had first push back and straight away started attacking our goal and applying pressure to our defence. The team had work hard to gain possession back and to try and keep it whilst attacking their goal. Frensham showed some great positioning on the pitch which opened their game up and allowed them to get close to the oppositions goal. It was great to see the team working really hard and being supportive of one another and their eagerness to win this game. It was a great game to watch as both teams were eager for the win. Frensham managed to score the first goal of the game which came from Leo which was followed by a goal from Ditcham. It was now half time with the score being 2-1 after a lovely goal from Jermima. After a quick team chat, we were on to the second half of the game. Ditcham changed up their positioning which led them to another goal with the score now being 2-2. Frensham were eager to have a win this week, but it was a tough match for all. It was great to see the whole team working hard until the last second of the game. A couple more goals were scored by both teams, both from Leo. This took the final score to 4-4. It was a great game to watch with some lovely hockey played by all. Well done to everyone that played and well done to Luke T and Leo who got player of the match! Under 11/10 Hockey v Boundary Oak On Wednesday afternoon the U11 hockey team made the very long trip down south to Gosport to play Boundary Oak. Despite this, the team stepped off the bus looking fresh and full of enthusiasm and started the game the stronger of the sides. This set the tone for the rest of game and Frensham enjoyed long spells of possession, moving the ball well between us to create several dangerous opportunities. The goals shortly followed with George R and Lila amongst the scorers with a couple of well taken goals. It's great to see the progress the team are making, and we are looking forward to attending the Churcher's U11 hockey tournament next Wednesday at Churcher's senior school. Well done to all on an enjoyable afternoon of hockey and a great performance. This week's match was away against Boundary Oak School. Once we arrived, we did a team warm up and then got straight into the match. Frensham had the first push back of the game. Straight away Frensham started attacking their goal and applied pressure to their defence. The team worked well together and had possession most of the game. Everyone was getting stuck in and eager for the ball which led to our first goal scored by Sophia with the help of Maela. Once our first goal was scored the team were very excited and were eager for more. Frensham improved their passing and spacing which meant it was easier to pass the ball up the pitch. Following our first goal Rudy managed to score another four goals for the team which took the final score to 5-0. Everyone played extremely well and should be very proud of themselves. It is great to see their hockey coming along. Well done to everyone that played and well done to Rudy for getting player of the match! Under 13s Basketball v Dunhurst and St Edmund’s We had a great afternoon of basketball playing a tournament against Dunhurst A and B and St Eds. We played the strongest team first in St Eds who had beaten us the previous week. We really raised our game with some great passing and moving and this week some excellent shooting. Alfie Harper, Yash and Derin were unstoppable all afternoon scoring lots of baskets and dominating the rebounds. We won this game 21-8. We then played the two Dunhurst teams back to back and our quick passing by Ben, Alfie Caudrey and Will Evans was too fast for them and we won both games 24-6 and 15-9. This meant we won the tournament which is a great achievement in just their second outing. Under 13s Rugby V Mayville The boys have had some awful luck this season with brutal weather and cancelled games which meant todays game was their first opportunity for a contact match. They were keen to get going and put into practice the skills they have been learning in lessons. They didn’t disappoint in all departments of the game, they were physical, showed great tackling technique, they carried the ball well, showed excellent discipline, supported their team mates and had a great time. We played to games of 8v8 against two Mayville teams. Highlights included Harry C and his fantastic strength with running the ball and scored four try’s. Negu and his agility, this boy is simply impossible to tackle! Jacob often first into the breakdown, Raffi with his speed running with the ball and quick offloads, Jackson putting his body on the line in tackles on the wing, David realising he is incredible strong, Edward with some fast hands and quick offloads and Fraser who showed good tackle technique to make some big hits. A great day, well done boys! 1/3 Staff v Sixth Formers Badminton Tournament In the” first ever “ badminton tournament Millie and Lloydy came out winners versus four very strong doubles team from the 6th form. It’s a tournament that will be running ever Tuesday from 5 30 - 6 30… hopefully a 6th form doubles team can win these impressive trophies at least once… but doubtful. 1/1 Under 13s Hockey v Sherfield Under 18s Hockey v King Edward’s Witley Wednesday 8th March - #Letgirlsplay Wednesday the 8th March is the biggest ever girls football session hosted by England Football. JUNIOR SCHOOL As a progressive school, we hear a lot of funny things being said about the way we tick. No structure. No discipline. No rules. These are the main misunderstandings. We may be different than a lot of very traditional independent schools, but we have classes and timetables and very solid expectations of everyone here. We don’t have uniforms, prefects, head boys and girls or Saturday school, but we do have a diverse curriculum, a lot of outdoor learning time and a very nurturing community. We’re not sure where the confusion lies so it’s best to come and have a look for yourself. Junior School Classroom Outdoor Ed Junior School classroom Junior School Classroom 1/8 JOIN US FOR AN OPEN MORNING QUICK LINKS NURSERY & RECEPTION TEACHING & LEARNING PASTORAL CARE OUR STAFF ADMISSIONS Listen to Nick, our Head of Junior School, Jade, our JS Assistant Head of Teaching & Learning, and some of our Year 6 children talk about life in the Junior School. JUNIOR SCHOOL: YEARS 1 TO 6 If you've ever worried that your child might be losing that natural love of learning or worried that their special spark might be fading, then we might just be the school you're looking for. We are passionate about keeping that childhood sense of wonder alive. Young children are fascinating. Their ideas are inspiring. Full of an optimism, creativity and open-mindedness that rivals a super power. Their huge imaginations and confident creativity are the basis for an amazing life, an amazing world. These things should be nurtured, encouraged and strengthened, but it's only when you acknowledge that each child shows these things differently - some when they're older, some younger - some visually, some physically, some verbally - only then can you support each child on their own educational adventure. By championing individuality and building a firm basis of mutual respect, our Junior School teachers and children learn together, discuss together and grow together. TEACHING & LEARNING TEACHING & LEARNING Sometimes, when people don’t know us very well, they assume we’re an art school. That our main focus is on the creative and performing arts. We’re quite flattered and we do all of that exceptionally well, but we’re actually a very balanced school. We don’t sway more towards the arts just as we don’t sway more towards traditional academic subjects. Both are essential. A scientist will be stronger for having learnt about colour and texture. A dancer will excel with a good knowledge of geometry and physics. Everyone will benefit from having performed on a stage from an early age. Most independent schools sway heavily towards academics, but you can, and should, have your maths and do a bit of dancing too. CLASS SIZES Our class sizes are small allowing for a lot more discussion, flexibility and personality. The maximum class size for Year 1 is 10 and for Years 2 to 6 is 16-18 children. We have one class per year in Years 1 to 3 and two classes per year in Years 4 to 6. We welcome children to join at any year group where there is space available. OUR LEARNING CHARTER - YRS N-3 OUR LEARNING CHARTER - YRS 4-6 CURRICULUM At Frensham, we treat academic and creative subjects equally and within the younger years particularly, our aim is to offer a very broad curriculum allowing each child to find their own strengths and passions. The core academic curriculum of Maths, English, Science and Topic happens with the year group teams, mainly in the classroom. Due to the small class sizes and our informal relationships, teachers get to know the children really well and really understand what makes each one tick. They can differentiate the work across all subjects to make sure each child receives the support or challenges that they need. We have a team of Teaching and Learning Assistants who support our Junior School, they work with the class teachers during core lessons to make sure all children are making progress. Each year group is different - we look at the children in front of us each year and provide the relevant support to meet their needs, as a group and as individuals. SUBJECT TEACHER LESSONS Our Junior School children have their core classes with their class teachers, but in order to experience a truly broad curriculum, they also have regular classes with subject teachers who teach up through the school - Dance, Drama, Music, IT, PE, Outdoor Ed and Modern Foreign Languages. CURRICULUM BREAKDOWN For the most part, we stick to our timetable, but class teachers do have the flexibility to extend activities if the children are really engrossed and makeup missed time in another subject later. Lessons are 30 minutes long and the weekly breakdown is shown below. English: 9 lessons Maths: 9 lessons Topic: 4 lessons | Yrs 5&6: 3 lessons Science: Yrs 1-3: 3 lessons | Yrs 4-6: 4 lessons Personal, Social, Health Education: 1 lesson Philosophy, Religion, Ethics: 1 lesson per week IT*: 2 lessons French*: Yrs 1-3: 1 lesson | Yrs 4-6: 2 lessons PE/Games*: 4 lessons per week Art: 2 lessons per week | Yr 5: 1 lesson Creative Design Tech* Yr 5: 1 lesson Music*: Yrs 1-3: 1 lesson | Yrs 4-6: 4 lessons Dance/Drama*: 2 lessons per week Forest School*: Yrs 1-3: 4 lessons per week Outdoor Education*: 2 lessons per fortnight * indicates subject teacher OUR SCHOOL DAY We have classes Monday to Friday. Years 1 to 3 start at 8:30am and finish at 3:20pm. Their day is split into five class periods with morning and afternoon breaks and lunch. There are extracurricular activities available at lunchtime and after school. Years 4 to 6 start at 8:30am and finish at 3:30pm. They have five class periods with a morning break and lunch. That’s not what progressive means. It means we’re forward-thinking, we’re open-minded. We help our children grow in their own unique ways, to develop their own skills and passions. This sets them in good stead for a future world we cannot yet know. We are a modern school, after all the world moves onwards not backwards. We don’t mind a bit of looking backwards, we’re very proud of our heritage, but there’s no point teaching children to mirror long-gone cultural and social ways. Teaching them to live in the past doesn’t make them stronger, it leaves them behind. I f you ask someone who’s never visited Frensham, they’ll probably just say we’re a school that uses first names and doesn’t have uniforms. It might be said with a hint of doubt. That’s a bit weird, right? But, if we look around at our modern society – the workplace, family life – is it really so strange? These are actually very simple things, very natural things and their effect in a school setting is quite refreshing – ultimately by taking away that hint of doubt about doing something differently. We stand firmly on a base of mutual respect. Teachers don’t demand respect, they earn it. As do the children. We aim to treat each other as we want to be treated. With respect. With compassion. With empathy. With our small class sizes and close relationships between children and teachers, bullying and other behavioural issues are rare and tend to be handled before they can become a problem. If problems do arise, they are handled through calm discussion with each child being given the chance to listen, talk and learn. We have boundaries, but not rules for rules sake allowing children to question, develop self-awareness, awareness of others and take responsibility for their actions. PASTORAL CARE OUR STAFF We seek out innovative teachers - those who aren't afraid to push boundaries, be brave and think outside the box. Teachers who are excited about their lessons and love learning. They inspire that passion in their students putting them in a great frame of mind for their primary education and beyond. • Our Approach | Frensham Heights

OUR APPROACH A progressive approach to education transcends the school years and aims to prepare each child for their future, both along whatever path they may choose but also as part of society as a whole. Students are asked to be active participants in their learning, challenging themselves and taking risks. They're asked to question and explore - to develop as individuals, as part of our school community and as engaged citizens of the wider world. OUR TEACHING & LEARNING We pride ourselves on looking at the whole child. Body, mind and spirit. Every child has potential. Not just a narrow potential to do well in academic tests or behave in a classroom, but each has their own potential far wider than this. An amazing imagination. A keen eye for colour or ear for rhythm. A passion for the environment, for numbers, for human rights, for literature. A natural grace on stage or one that’s still developing. We can miss the mark hugely if we judge children with easy to tick boxes when they undoubtedly have so much more to offer. And so, we offer them a very broad curriculum to let each child follow their own path towards fulfilling their unique potential. Until the end of Year 9, all students will explore a diverse timetable made up of mathematical and scientific, creative and performing, linguistic and literary, physical and technological, moral and spiritual, social and human subjects. All held in equal importance. Our GCSEs and A Levels are equally broad allowing students to create a tailor-made curriculum supporting their passions, strengths and goals. Within the classroom, life is just as diverse. Teachers are supported to be brave and innovative with their teaching. Classes are small allowing topics, activities and discussions to be modified, flexible, adaptable to the students involved. Teachers can break the mould, are encouraged to break the mould. If something’s not working, if interest or understanding is failing, they can stop and discuss. How can we make this interesting for you? How can we make this work? And together they can find that spark that has them all engaged, involved and really learning. Non-competitive classrooms allow the shyest to be more bold and the loudest to be more gentle, more considerate – valuable lessons in their own right. It creates a refreshing place to learn and teach. MEET OUR TEACHERS LEARNING RELATIONSHIPS We talk a lot about relationships at Frensham. To be very honest, and it’s probably clear, we are very proud of the relationships that develop here - they form one of our core values. Not just the schoolmates who go on to be lifelong friends and actually not just the relationships between people. At Frensham, really special relationships grow between teachers and students and from that between students and the subjects they become passionate about during their time here. With a more informal setting and smaller classes, the teachers and students really get to know each other. Our teachers love the subjects they teach and they really want to pass that on. Their enthusiasm, interest and passion overflows into their students, particularly those that find they love those subjects too. That genuine shared enthusiasm breaks down barriers to learning. There’s no stigma attached. You can love maths and chat equations with your tutor at break. You can sing your heart out in the corridor on the way to class. No one will judge. You can be really academic or truly creative or both. The support you see here between students, between friends, really can bring tears to your eyes. As long as you do your best, take a few risks, step out of your comfort zone now and then, Frensham can support you with whatever your dreams may be. FRENSHAM PATHWAYS We are committed to offering a modern education which prepares our students for a future we can't yet know. With this as a focus, our new role of Head of Frensham Pathways is responsible for exploring an alternative, innovative curriculum that will be focused on relevant skills as the world continues its journey towards a more sustainable economic model with human service at its heart. Working alongside our Head of Careers, our Head of Frensham Pathways ensures that each student receives the support, advice and bespoke education relevant to their future higher education or career aspirations. LEARNING ENVIRONMENT In many ways, on first glance, our classrooms won’t look so different from anywhere else, but on second glance, you might notice that the teacher probably isn’t standing at the front. They’re more likely to be mingled in amongst the students. You might start to notice that the volume is a bit higher, it’s not just the teacher talking, the students – in all year groups – will be discussing and taking part too. Some classes might have gone outside, some might be using the tarmac as a giant blackboard or the woods as a setting for some creative writing. In all cases there will be a flexibility at work allowing the lessons to be moulded to keep everyone’s interest high. In every lesson what will stand out is the genuine relationships between the teachers and students. This develops both from our small class sizes and our more informal approach - our first name basis and sense of equality and mutual respect. This creates a learning environment that is not often found in an academic setting - a positive and safe academic learning environment where students and teachers can be brave and not afraid to take risks or make mistakes. SPORTS OUTDOOR ED CREATIVITY Creativity at Frensham is not limited to the creative subjects. It also sits at the heart of our academics. We strive for creativity of thought in every academic pursuit – to look at things differently, to consider a different approach - this forms one of our core values. We hope each student can find their own way to be engaged, that teachers can find a way to get everyone excited. Beyond that, developing a strong practice of creative thinking is imperative for life after Frensham. We aim to develop each student into a questioning and socially conscious young person. Someone who isn’t scared to challenge the norm, to question and speak up, someone who will make a difference whilst at Frensham and beyond. HOMEWORK Students are set homework if it is meaningful and adds something to their learning. We don't set homework just for the sake of it and sometimes giving students time to simply reflect on their learning can be a powerful tool. However, homework does give students the opportunity to work on essential life skills like organisation, time management and self discipline. It can also provide opportunities to consolidate learning and engage in a topic or independent research. Homework can be extremely valuable but never at the expense of student wellbeing. Our priority is about striking the balance between homework providing academic support but also not becoming overwhelming. We want our students to be able to have time out of school to be children - to rest and play. If we strike the balance right, these are not mutually exclusive. STUDY CLINICS We are committed to meeting the academic needs of all of our students and to also give them the tools and opportunities to take responsibility for their own learning. One way we do this is through regular drop-in study clinics. They run throughout the academic year and are held during lunch times and after school. MIXED-ABILITY CLASSES Classes in the Junior School may be set in certain subjects if the needs of the class group require this, however for the most part the children are taught in mixed ability sets. In Year 7, we set for Maths and Modern Foreign Languages, if appropriate to the class group. In Year 8, we also set for English and in Year 9 for Science as well. All other subjects are taught in mixed ability groups. SUPPORT FOR LEARNING We have an excellent Support for Learning team and we are able to offer support to children with mild learning difficulties. Through our entrance process, we will assess whether we can meet the needs of each child - this is to ensure that all students can flourish and thrive during their time at Frensham. We are unable to provide dedicated teaching assistants or one-to-one support in class. We are also unable to support children with moderate or severe learning needs. OUR SEN POLICY

  • September Week 2 2023 | Frensham Heights

THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 15th September, 2023 CLICK TO NAVIGATE NOTICES THIS WEEK SPORTS REPORT OUTSIDE SCHOOL CATERING NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM ANDREW Dear Parents, It has been so incredible being back at Frensham, renewing my understanding of the school and also my complete belief in the education and culture we provide. A lot of people have asked, “How’s it going?” with slightly raised eyebrows and a sense of concern in their voices, perhaps worried for me as I get through the information overload stage; honestly it is going better than I could have hoped. I am exhilarated by leading the school again and so humbled to have the chance to work with everyone in the community again. It has been lovely to meet parents and children joining the school this year: again my warmest welcome to you all. It has been charming to meet young men and women now five years older, ‘all grown up’. Particularly wonderful has been when I have been able to sift my memory quickly enough, calculate the change in the faces and height and hair and then get their names right! Each time the student concerned has broken into a big smile (almost congratulating me) and we set off again on living and working together. There is a lot to do, and I will do my best to improve the key areas raised by all parts of the school: communication (accuracy, timeliness, clarity), and the need for some clear and calm leadership. I am really confident we can achieve a lot on both of these, as well as starting to address some anomalies and making sure we are delivering the ethos and education you all believe in. So rather than your warm “Welcome Back!” to me it's my chance to say "Welcome to a Great New Year" to all of you. Andrew Hear a few words from Andrew about his return to Frensham, his plans for the next year working alongside Ben McCarey, incoming Head, and Simon Wilcox. NOTICES A MESSAGE FROM NICK SAFEGUARDING UPDATE FROM JO AND JACK Welcome back from us in the Safeguarding Team! It is a busy time with all the children excited to see each other, meeting new teachers and signing up for new ECAs and activities. While everyone is happy to be back, this can also be a daunting time for new students or for any of us returning after the long break. Please remember that we are here for anyone who is finding things difficult. That goes for parents too - we are here for you as well! Jack will be hosting a Parents' Online Safety Coffee Morning on the 5th of October in the Aldridge first thing, look out for an email with more details. We will also be sending out information about the Horizons programme in the Senior School at the start of next week to give you lots of detail about what we cover and when. This is the lesson time when we cover PSHE topics and hope to help the children understand many of the different issues that they may face growing up and how to manage these important aspects of moving through adolescence! Do get in touch if you have any questions! AUTUMN TERM FEE INVOICES Thank you to everyone who has already settled their Autumn Term fees invoice. Please remember that all invoices should have been paid by the first day of the current term. If your invoice is still outstanding, could I ask you to settle it with out delay. Should you have any concerns, or wish to discuss your invoice, please do get in touch either by telephone or by email to juliebooker@frensham.org . SINGLE CONSENT FORM We are still waiting for a number of parents to fill in the Single Consent Form sent out at the beginning of the year. It is really important that you fill in this form . If you haven't already, please click to fill in the Single Consent Form now. COVID ADVICE The obligation to test for Covid-19 was removed some time ago. However, if, your child is unwell, and unable to be in school they are to stay at home and can return to school when they are feeling better. If there is a strong suspicion of covid infection or your child has tested positive for covid, we ask that your child stays at home for 3 days - day of symptoms starting/day of positive test is day zero and your child can return to school on day 4. DfE Advice: What happens if my child tests positive for COVID-19? For children and young people aged 18 and under who test positive for COVID-19, the advice is to try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for three days. This is because children and young people tend to be infectious to other people for less time than adults. ALDRIDGE CAFÉ Just a reminder that the Aldridge Café is open before and after school everyday. Hours are: Mon-Thurs 8 to 10am & 3 to 5pm and Fridays 8 to 10am & 3 to 4.30pm INTRODUCING OUR NEW CATERERS - CH&CO Click here to see an introduction from our new caterers . RESIDENTIAL TRIPS - LOOKING AHEAD We are very lucky that we have a large number of staff who are very happy to run school trips that enrich our school experience – including over weekends and holidays. We know that trips require a lot of planning and in general residential trips are scheduled a year in advance so that we can organise them and allow you time to plan/save as neede. Below is a live link to our working document that shows our plans so far. The further ahead the trip – the less details we may have – but hopefully it goes someway to help give the overview. 2023-2024 TRIPS THANK A TEACHER! THIS WEEK THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM YEAR 7 INDUCTION DAYS Year 7 Induction (a little story): The First Moments of the First Day Once upon a time, in the heights of the Surrey Hills… "We have another thirty minutes before we start", was heard from a voice near reception. On arrival it was clear that the walls of Main House were not strong enough to contain the anticipation, excitement and energy of the new Year 7s, as each family arrived adding their own individual ingredients to this growing future. On time, the doors opened and our cherished families moved through the Ballroom and out onto a stunningly beautiful sun-drenched front lawn. The vision was perfect and a busy sound of happiness cascaded in all directions and over the wall and on downward into the valley. It was a perfect start, and the first example of so much fun to be enjoyed at Frensham. Now, our walk of 60 people to Alice Holt through trees, ferns and brambles was a different type of fun; and simply another story for another day. 1/12 YEAR 8 PGL INDUCTION DAYS Year 8 had a fantastic start to the new year with a couple of days at PGL. It was wonderful to see everyone happily reunited with their friends and raring to give the challenges a go. The students tried out a huge variety of different activities, with the trapeze and giant swing being the firm favourites! A highlight for staff was seeing the encouragement and camaraderie on display...they were a real credit to the school and the Frensham spirit was coming through loud and clear. Well done all! 1/44 YEAR 9 VENTURE C AMP Year 9 started with a Venture camp. Students and tutors trekked to Garner's Field campsite along footpaths and through the Bourne Woods, happily chatting. After a well deserved rest in leafy shade at the campsite the students set about pitching their tents for the night. This was a fantastic example of problem solving and teamwork. Once the tents were up it was free time to enjoy the site using the volleyball nets, playing football or quieter activities such as playing card games. All under the umbrella of a wonderful sun set. Enjoying the Indian Summer evening everyone gathered around the campfire with hot chocolate, s'mores and some guitar music. The beautiful country setting meant that some may have heard owls throughout the night. Not too early the campsite awoke to the sound of roosters and were greeted with a misty morning sunrise. After breakfast the days activities started on rotation comprising of archery, damper bread, climbing, team building activities, assault course and navigation skills. It was wonderful to see the new tutor groups working well together and to see new friendships build. Packing up the tents was another task where I witnessed staff and students helping and supporting each other with folding and the rolling of tents and hot tips on how to get a sleeping bag back into its bag! I think the majority were thankful that the return journey to school was via mini bus. Back at Frensham Year 9 gathered in the theatre to watch a slideshow of images from the trip. I am very proud of how all the students conducted themselves thoughout the trip, some great memories have been made. YEAR 10 ACS PORTSMOUTH It was so wonderful to welcome back our Year 10 students and also lovely to meet our new students joining the school for their GCSE journey. And what better way to start than with a outdoor activities day at Andrew Simpson Centre in Portsmouth! The sun was shining and everyone enjoyed the activities available-including SUP, Kayaking, Climbing and Archery. What a perfect way to start the term, reconnecting with friends, and making new ones. 1/21 YEAR 11 RESIDENTIAL An excellent couple of days were had by Year 11 on our two day residential at Buddens outdoor Centre. How lucky we were to experience such stunning weather, whilst enjoying lake activities such as paddleboarding, kayaking and raft building. The lake was alive with squeals, shouts, competition and laughter. On dry land, we were able to learn the art of tomahawk throwing, thankfully contained! Staying in bell tents and eating hearty food, it was a relaxing way to start Year 11 and meet up with friends after the s ummer break. 1/10 SIXTH FORM INDUCTION Last Friday the whole of the Sixth Form enjoyed a trip to the Campaign Laser Park near Cobham. We were grateful to be in the shade of the woodland trees, as the weather was still hot, yet despite this much fun was had by all! The first round showed a little nervousness, but it did not take long at all for team strategy and competitiveness to kick in, and it was clear to see that there were smiles and laughter all round. We were taken to different themed 'fields' to change the scenery and try different locations, and we all enjoyed the quirky decorations that the Campaign staff had brought in...from barricades made from old oil drums, the odd jet ski, cargo netting, hideouts and even a dalek! The Sixth Form team were really happy to see so many students in the Sixth Form joining the trip and having the courage to try, well done everyone! Year 12 also dropped in to meet (or reconnect) with Andrew in his office. 1/21 BOARDERS WEEKEND We had a fabulous, fun boarders weekend last weekend. This really is a great starting point each year for our boarders to build relationships with their house mates and house staff. On the agenda this year for the first time was pop up street food and a silent disco. There were a few people who were a little unsure about the silent disco but after 2 minutes on the dance floor it became a big hit with all students and staff dancing the night away. As the weather was so nice, we moved the silent disco to the front lawn which really was a perfect setting with the incredible view. The pop-up street food was a big hit with various beef and chicken dishes served and accompanied by rice and noodles. On returning to their houses HH had mocktails and cookies and RH enjoyed wine and cheese. On Saturday we went to Brighton for the day, and we couldn’t have chosen a better day weather wise to visit the beach. Students spent time at the beach, the pier and getting lost in the beautiful lanes. A lovely, sunny day had by all. On Sunday students enjoyed activities on site that our wonderful boarding staff and facilities can offer. Students were able to choose which activities they would like to do, the list included mountain biking, art, archery, high ropes, sports hall games, baking, pool fun, music and much more. After a busy weekend, the boarders then enjoyed cookies and hot chocolate followed by some down time to prepare for the week ahead. A fabulous weekend had by all. "Last weekend was very eventful. On Friday night we went to main House to have a 'silent disco'! It wasn't very silent... lots of people sang and danced (loudly). After that, we went back to Hamilton House and had 'Cocktails & Biscuits'!" 1/77 "That was just the beginning of the activities, as the next day we went on a day trip to Brighton and this was one of the best school day trips I've every been on." GREENPOWER We’re back!! On Sunday 8th September we raced at Dunsfold Aerodrome and as always, the team got involved in any and every way they could. Like all the other races we have been to, it was a bright and very early start to our day, and after setting up we went straight to scrutineering, passing successfully, then started to prep for the practice laps which the team absolutely crushed! We had a small break to make sure we were prepped and ready for race 1 and Ava, Maria and Richie were our chosen drivers. During the race we had a few delays because of red flags and unfortunately this didn’t play well into our strategy. We tend to strike the balance of not over gearing the car and conserving our energy, otherwise we’d potentially run our batteries low, resulting in a very slow car. The race clock kept on ticking during the red flags which meant we had plenty of battery life left at the end and we didn’t use the full potential. We finished 6th kit car in the first race, a brilliant achievement! The second race started off brilliantly but unfortunately, we had a slight technical problem; one of the crimped cables came loose and we lost power. The team wasted no time whatsoever and right away worked out what the issue was and fixed it in time for our last driver of the day, which was Aragon, to get a few laps in. We finished the day by collecting our medals and trophy from the Lotus heat (from last terms race) and packed up the car and equipment, all of us with smiles on our faces. It was another memorable day, and we can’t wait for our next race this Sunday at the Castle Combe circuit. Written by Juno in Year 8 1/9 YEAR 1 MATHS Year 1 enjoyed taking their learning outside this morning to practise using ten frames during maths. 1/3 MORNING TALK As you all know, our Senior School have Morning Talk everyone Friday morning. This is something that has happened at Frensham since our founding days and it's a space for the older students to get together to listen and discuss current affairs and relevant issues. Sometimes this happens in tutor rooms and sometimes in the Aldridge with visiting speakers or members of our community up on stage. This week Andrew started off Morning Talk by introducing himself and setting the stage for the year ahead. He was then followed by the team of staff and students who went to Malawi over the summer. WORTHY EARTH Year 7 have been introduced to our amazing Worthy Earth project. They toured the bountiful kitchen garden and learnt about what is growing. They even got to taste some of the wonderful produce. Over the year, our students will learn how to care for the land and grow their own food... and we are looking forward to enjoying the fruits of their labour! 1/16 SPORTS REPORT SPORTS REPORT Welcome back from PE! THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM Friday 23rd June, 2023 CLICK TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL MESSAGES SCHOOL EVENTS THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT FRENSHAM KITCHEN NEXT WEEK A MESSAGE FROM LAURA Dear Parents, It has been another eventful week however, the highlight of the week for me has been receiving this wonderful article from Roy with regards to the photo book that I mentioned last week. A big thank you to Roy and Neil for their keen investigatory skills and this article. As promised, here is the article. Best wishes Laura Edwardian life at Frensham Hill – by Roy Waight with research by Neil Pittaway Thanks to Russ, who mentioned my book on More House School to her, the acting head-mistress of Frensham Heights invited me to the school on 13 June to discuss the possibility of writing a book about the school. In 1925 it will celebrate its centenary. Laura Griffiths, the acting head-mistress, and I sat in the extraordinarily imposing drawing room close to the entrance of the building discussing the history of the school. Then she astonished me with one of those delightful surprises that make the lonely life of the local historian liveable. She told me that someone had, the previous week, approached the reception desk with a large photograph album. He said that he had discovered it thrown away in a skip and wondered if the school might want it. He had then left. I don’t know who he was. When Laura eventually found time to open it, it was to be transported into a magical past world of Edwardian grace, cricket, fashion and fun. The album contains hundreds of photographs dating from between 1907 and 1909 taken mostly, but not exclusively, at Frensham Hill, which had been completed just half a dozen years before. A MESSAGE FROM NICK CLICK FOR NICK'S MESSAGE SAFEGUARDING UPDATE FROM JO AND JACK This week we attended a DSL Network Event with Surrey Safeguarding Children’s Partnership where they discussed issues around online safety and also introduced the Locality Early Help Advisor team. Each school has an advisor allocated to them and we are already working with them to help some of our children in need of support. Their role is to suggest agencies, charities and services which could be of help to families who are dealing with their unique and different circumstances. We liaise with the advisors without naming any student or family, just giving them the details of what issues they are facing and they provide us with a list of suggested places the family can go for help. As parents ourselves we know that any ideas for support are always welcome! If this is something that you think could be helpful to you, please get in touch with us at dsl@frensham.org and we can see what we can find out! RSVP HERE THIS WEEK AT FRENSHAM THIS WEEK YEAR 12 KNOYDART As part of their Sixth Form experience, ten Year 12 students embarked on an adventurous week on the wild west coast of Scotland. The first stage of the trip was a 2-day sea kayaking adventure, involving a paddle out through the beautiful surroundings of Loch Moidart. We made our way to the far western shores to a stunning wild camping spot, on a desolate beach, surrounded by small rocky outcrops and a sunset view of the islands of Eigg and Rum. During the next phase, we were based at an outward-bound centre on the shore of Loch Eil. Activities included rock climbing on the rocky slabs of Glen Nevis, swimming in the cool waters of Loch Eil and in gorge walking up two rivers. The expedition culminated in a journey to the wilderness of the Knoydart peninsular. The team began their journey with a 10km hike across hilly terrain to the isolated settlement of Tarbet. A short ferry ride later and we arrived at our final destination of Inverie, famed for being the most remote community on mainland Britain. The main aim the following day was to assist with the rangers from the Knoydart Foundation in building a woodshed for their campsite. All the material for this project were bought by the Foundation with the proceeds from fundraising by the students. In the words of the ranger: “In awe of the efforts of Frensham Heights School’s lower sixth pupils who helped us put up a log shed for our campers at Long Beach in just a day……the group also teamed up to repair steps by the River Inverie making the path more accessible to visitors and locals alike. Despite contending with midges, horseflies and high temperatures, there wasn’t one word of complaint from the group – awesome work.” The final evening of the trip was based around another campfire on the beach and the moment embodied the Frensham spirit, particularly the values of togetherness and courage to try. They were fantastic ambassadors for their school, and they should be proud of themselves. Well done Team Knoydart 2023! 1/43 1/15 YEAR 7 THE FLOOD Last week, project week saw Year 7 immersed in a disaster management scenario: the Flood. Students were asked to work as tutor groups and were guided by a series of presentations and workshops, to reimagine society following a flood of biblical proportions. Students choose to work on different aspects, depending on what piqued their interests, be that governance or cultural legacy or shelter design. This was a truly cross curricular project and challenged students to develop real world skills. Working together as a team, experiencing leadership, clear communication, problem solving and being creative and dynamic in their approach. Our aim was to structure the project but give students the space to make mistakes and learn, so building resilience in their approach. The groups overcame difficulties, be they disagreements amongst their peers, or the changing dynamics introduced through our breaking news alerts. Tutors and teachers were incredibly impressed by the quality, ambition and creativity of the end product. All students took part in the group’s presentation in one way or another and the sense of pride in what the groups had achieved in a week was palpable. Hard work was rewarded with ice lollies and play time at the end of the day. Well done Year 7! What did the students say? "It was good to get to spend more time with the people in my tutor group." "Making my own sport in the Health and fitness workshop was my highlight." "I enjoyed the workshops that we did, especially the governance and power." "The infrastructure & power and tribal dance workshops were my favourite." "Teamwork was a skill I developed; when we were playing capture the flag, we had to work together and be very strategic." "I learnt so much in First Aid, thank you." "I showed leadership in the shelter building workshop to complete our design." "This week has helped me think more creatively and made me listen more to other peoples’ ideas." "Our group could not agree on the powerpoin, so we used problem solving to make teamwork." "Working together to agree on the theme of the PowerPoint presentation was our most difficult challenge." "Our group didn't agree on what to put in the powerpoint so then we had a vote and it all worked out." "The Flood was a good challenge, I needed to think on my feet, I loved it." 1/6 year 7 presentations year 7 presentations year 7 front lawn year 7 presentations 1/4 BAFTA YOUNG GAME DESIGNER OF THE YEAR On Thursday evening BAFTA streamed the final of the Young Games Designer of the Y ear Awards. Categories were Game Concept award (10-14 and 15-18) and Game Making award (10-14 and 15-18). Back in February, knowing he had the skills to do well, I set the very talented Arlo F (Year 10) the challenge of creating a game for the competition. He used his creative and technical talents to envision, design and develop an original game that he specifically made for the competition. He spent many hours in his own time out of school coming up with his game he called Bird in the Woods. The graphics, sound, idea and code are all designed by him and to make this achievement all the more incredible, all of this took him less than a month! You can watch the moment he was announced the winner here: BAFTA YGD Game Design 10-14 Final BAFTA are also running a showcasing event at their headquarters in London on Sunday 2nd July. On the day, there will be facilitated Young Games Designer workshops so you can come up with your own game concept and receive feedback from an industry expert. All the finalists games are being showcased so you can play Arlo's game along with all the other finalist to see the sort of games our future games designers are creating. You can order your tickets to this free event here: BAFTA Gaming Showcase Event 2nd July Arlo’s game will also be showcased as part of the Power Up exhibition at the London Science museum from 27th July 2023. Power Up | Science Museum SELF EXPRESSION SAFARI Thank you to everyone who came and supported the Self Expression Safari event. Whilst the sun shone, some of our youngest fashion designers paraded on the Art Plaza with “Cherry” a fun mascot for Cherry Trees charity. More students entertained us with music on the outdoor stage and everyone enjoyed looking at the stalls, participating in Messy Play, Boogie Pumps Dance, face painting, Family photography, Personalising clothing and enjoying delicious refreshments. At 4pm we were all treated to a fabulous finale in the Aldridge Theatre. The “Fashion Showcase” showing all of the various adaptive clothing that had been designed, prototyped and realised had a real impact on the audience. It was stunning! Seeing the student models come together from different schools, wearing clothes that they like, helped to design and looked cool wearing, It was emotional to see everyone coming together in this way and although some of the clothes were especially adapted to suit the specific needs of children, they were equal to everyone else-very moving and thoughtful …. But most of all, ther was an electric atmosphere and an auditorium of happiness. Huge thanks to everyone that took part and supported this project, here is a link to the final showcase …. 1/50 YEAR 11 GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY It was great to enjoy an evening with the Yr.11 GCSE photography students as part of the Creative Arts Evening. Their work will continue to be on display until Founders Day in the Studios Foyer. Fantastic effort by all students ! Well done ! GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION 1/17 JUNIOR SCHOOL BUGS EXPERIENCE On Thursday Years R-5 have enjoyed a Backyard Bugs Experience in the Junior School. The children had an amazing hands on, informative session where they met a baby boa-constrictor, scorpions, stick insects, blue death feigning beetles, cone headed Katydid, giant millipedes, a deadly centipede, hissing cockroaches, two tarantulas called Sally and Rosie and many more amazing bugs! The children were absolutely in awe of the amazing reptiles and bugs. The company said that they had never had such a well behaved, interested and wonderful group of children! What an experience! 1/26 SLAPTON LEA YEAR 12 TRIP On Friday, 12th May, the Year 12 Geographers went on 3-day trip to the south-west of England to sample the delights of Slapton Ley in Devon. The trip formed a crucial part of their preparation for their Non-Examined Assessment (NEA), or ‘coursework’ (for the parents!), a project which forms 20% of their overall grade. The Geography A-Level requires the completion of an independent enquiry into a geographic issue that can be researched through primary data, allowing the students the choice of studying, in detail, any topic that piques their interest. And where better to get inspired, than the sunny Devonshire coast? Hosted and guided by the knowledgeable staff at the Slapton Ley Field Studies Centre (FSC), the students were given insight into a range of different methods for collecting data in the field, shown how to record data on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and taken to a range of coastal and rural settings with interesting geographic features. As well as benefitting from the intense focus on their geographic field work skills, the students were blessed with amazing weather all weekend, and enjoyed a Eurovision sweepstake competition, won by Bella. A very pleasant trip was had by all! (Except the hay fever sufferers, who had a nightmare!) 1/4 WEST WITTERING YEAR 8 GEOGRAPHY TRIP As part of their geographic studies on Coastal Environments, the Year 8s were taken on a lovely day trip to West Wittering, on Tuesday, 6th June. The trip had two main elements, the first was to expose the pupils to a range of geographic field work skills and get them used to using scientific equipment. The second, was to enable the students to observe a number of coastal landforms and see for themselves the impacts of human intervention on coastal processes. The day included a short tour of East Head and the completion of an annotated map, the creation of a beach profile using ranging poles and clinometers, the measurement of the impact of groynes on longshore drift and an assessment of the merits of different coastal defences. As well as providing a good grounding in geographic skills, we were blessed with clear blue skies, wide open beaches, and ice cream. You can’t go to the beach and not get an ice cream! 1/3 JUNIOR SCHOOL SLEEPOVER On Thursday Years 3 and 4 went had a classroom sleepover. The children enjoyed the backyard bugs experience after school, dinner, a fun game of rounders, followed by marshmallows on the camp fire, bedtime stories and a ‘good night sleep’! Year 3 then went on a trip to Alice Holt and Year 4 enjoyed a trip to Ash Lock, followed by a well earned movie afternoon with popcorn. 1/11 YEAR 8 VILLAGE 2023 : THE VIDEO MATHS CHALLENGES On Wednesday 21st Jack and Ranjani took a group of Year 5 (Aneela, Cassia, Charlotte and Elsa) and Year 10 (George S, Arlo F, Heidi and Millie) talented Mathematicians to the Alton Team Maths Challenge where they represented Frensham brilliantly. This involved lots of brain power, collaboration and teamwork. Our students were exposed to some very interesting and challenging problems. It was great to see the Junior school work so well and our Year 10 students were great role models throughout the afternoon. In Maths lessons Year 10 have been applying their knowledge of Trigonometry to measure the heights of some very tall trees taking advantage of our beautiful grounds. They used Clinometers to measure angles of elevation - it was great to see them working collaboratively in the sunshine and then applying their skills in the classroom to produce some great work. 1/6 FRENSHAM FAYRE ART ENTRIES Some of our Junior School children entered the art competition at the Frensham Fayre. The theme was British countryside and traditions. Well done to Year 4 children Jack (Second prize) and Ethan, Amelie and Lila (all Highly Commended). 1/8 YEAR 7 CERAMICS Year 7 have been lear ning about slip in ceramics and created these fantastic sgraffito sea-life pieces. sgraffito ceramics sgraffito ceramics sgraffito ceramics sgraffito ceramics 1/7 SPONTANEOUS PEFORMANCE Some of our junior school children were treated to a spontaneous performance from our Year 9 helper in Music this week. students play piano students play piano 1/1 MORNING TALK In Morning Talk this week Years 7,8 and 10 heard from Pierce from Futbol Lingo. Pierce is originally from Germany and spent his early life working towards a career as a professional footballer. He came close but after this ended up not happening he trained as a coach and now works at Burnley FC. He spoke to the students with passion and humour about the importance of languages if you want to work in the world of football or any international industry. The children enjoyed the talk, engaged really well, and many afterwards commented to me on how it was one of the best they had seen. As Pierce told the students “Learning is Earning”! 1/1 GREENPOWER This week we undertook some last minute preparations for our upcoming race on Sunday at the Lotus test track in Hethel, Norfolk. We mainly practiced pit stops and we also filled in some important pre race forms and worked out and finalised who is doing what and when with pit stops and driver changes. The team was thrilled to be playing in another match and representing the school once more. We were up to bat first, which is always nerve-wracking for the team, but they all gave it their all and worked extremely hard the entire game. Luca and Albie, our first pair, played several excellent shots and showed excellent communication. Everyone had a fantastic batting innings, and it was wonderful to see how much they all improved throughout the course of the season. Louis and Rudy batted as our sixth pair, and they played some incredible shots, especially Louis, who struck some strong shots towards the boundary line. We had a brief team discussion before we took to the field. The first bowler up was Ruby, who had a fantastic over with her accurate and rapid bowls. It was a terrific start to the innings because Ruby's bowling was able to deny Duke of Kent from scoring any runs in the opening over. This season, everyone showed how much they have progressed, which was fantastic to witness. The U10 team found this week's game challenging because Duke of Kent had a very strong side with greater cricketing experience. It was wonderful to watch the team having fun during yet another cricket match. Congratulations to everyone who participated. We now go on to the season's final game. U10 Mixed Cricket vs St Edmunds Congratulations to Youmin and Cristian on winning the badminton trophies this week. In the final they beat Alan and Lotte 35- 16. U10 Mixed Cricket v Duke of Kent The U10 cricket team welcomed Duke of Kent on Wednesday afternoon. The team came up against some strong opposition but approached the game with a positive attitude, keen to take what they had learnt in the previous week into this fixture. Frensham won the toss and batted first scoring a total of 194 with Lillian and Isla and Eva and Ethan scoring 9 runs each in their pairs. The opposition had some big hitters and looked to attack the bowling, managing to score 275 and win the game. Scarlett, Herbie and Nathanael all picking up wickets in their overs. It's great to see the improvement everyone is making week on week, and we look forward to the last games of the season next week. Well done all. U9 Quadkids Athletics We took a team of eight U9 athletes, four boys and four girls to Bedales Dunhurst on Thursday afternoon to take part in a Quadkids athletics meet. The team faced nine other schools and were all competing individually to win as many points as possible for the overall team by getting the best possible times and distances. Each athlete competed in a 50m sprint, standing long jump, 400m and Vortex throw. Despite the heat and burning sun, all athletes gave it their maximum effort and it was brilliant to see them competing again following on from Sports Day. On the day, Amesbury School took the victory, and we are waiting for Bedales to send through the breakdown of results to see how we did individually. Well done to all involved in a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of athletics. student running athletics team students running student running 1/3 U13s Cricket v The Royal U15 Cricket v The Royal U13 Cricket v Duke of Kent U15 Cricket v Bedales Fixture Calendar A reminder that you can see all fixtures for the half term on the SOCS sport frensham website, team selection activates on Thursdays the week before matches. On Wednesday, FOF in collaboration with the school, invited a very special visitor to the Junior School. (Check out our Instagram post to follow the Easter Bunny’s Frensham adventure!) The younger years did a wonderful job of helping the Easter Bunny retrieve all their lost eggs in the playground and the older years spent lunchtime working in teams to complete an Easter quiz, unscrambling the answers for the secret password. Lots of the Senior School children also stopped by to say hello to the Easter Bunny; who knew the Easter Bunny could floss! Every child in the JS took an Easter egg home as a thank you for all their efforts and an equivalent Easter egg was donated by FOF to the Farnham food bank. Thank you for all that took part and especially to the Easter Bunny for a hopping good day! Photos by Iola 1/26 ROCK & POP GIG Just before school broke up, the Aldridge came to life with a superb Rock and Pop Gig. An excellent line up of singers, musicians and bands spanning across the Senior School and Sixth Form. The perfect end to a busy term. 1/31 GREENPOWER This week we had not one but two special guests at the session, one of them was Alex who last year was the data analyst, and the other guest was one of our governors Richard who helped the team members who were interested in the telemetry system and understand more about it. The team got to get familiar with how to safely lift the car off the stand and how to safely get in and out of the car and what to do at the pits (which they picked up pretty quickly) Team profile: Name: Richie Likes: sports, Dislikes: art Favorite subject: dt and ict Why I applied: the activities seemed fun and the fact that we get to build and race the car also seemed fun. A VISIT FROM THE EASTER BUNNY Nursery to Year 3 had a visit from the Easter Bunny, they enjoyed an Easter egg hunt and got a chocolate egg themselves in return for finding the Bunny’s lost eggs. Years 4 to 6 enjoyed a cryptic Easter Egg hunt in the playground and earned an egg each when they worked out the password. It was great fun! 1/6 FOREST SCHOOL AND OUTDOOR EDUCATION This week in Forest School Year 2 kicked off by mastering the slack line. Set up by a resident expert Matt Brown, all the children thoroughly enjoy this activity and were supportive of one another. Year 1’s enjoyed making puppets out of clay and card. We set up a tarp to resemble and Punch and Judy stage where the children practiced a scene or two with their puppets, later performing them to the rest of the class. Great creativity! Year 3’s had a blast playing a few games before a cheeky visit from the Easter Bunny, finishing with time on main lawn to chill out with their friends before the Easter break. This week saw Year 6 continuing with orienteering and finding control points (story books) around the grounds. Year 5 capped off the week getting hands on with our little Annie’s, completing a lesson on CPR and the use of a defibrillator. This is a great lesson led by Linn K and Matt Brown where we aim to educate our children on basic life support as we value this as an essential life skill for all. 1/10 TRIP TO BRITISH FILM INSTITUTE Charlie Bennett took the A-level Film Students to the British Film Institute on Thursday for a comprehensive revision day: exploring ideas like how 1920s German cinema blends realism and expressionism; the subtext of trainspotting; whether or not Tarantino is an auteur; whether or not Hitchcock’s Vertigo fits into the classic Hollywood mode and the impact of the documentary maker’s point of view on films like Amy, Stories We Tell and Man on Wire. A very stimulating day out. EASTER EGG COLLECTION A huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated Easter Eggs for the Smile Sleigh collection. We managed to collect a huge number of eggs that we delivered to Smile Sleigh on Thursday. Sophie, who founded the charity works with many different organisations and explained that some mums had already been in touch asking if there were any donations they could have and had already found a group in need of donations that ours were going to be going to. The Hamilton House boarders rose to the challenge when they were given the task of collecting as many eggs as they could in 3 days. They did a brilliant job, and it has made such a difference. Smile Sleigh was originally set up to distribute Christmas gift donations and the Hamilton House team have already expressed an interest in collecting donations over Christmas as well. Very proud of our Frensham Height students who got involved. 1/1 GOLD D OF E TRAINING WEEKEND Linn Kathenes-McGuigan, Charlie Bennett, Nick Boon-Arnell and Matt Brown took a group of students to Dartmoor for their Gold Duke of Edinburgh training weekend. Dartmoor may not have the high cliffs of the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia but it can be a desolate place with very challenging ground to cover and tricky navigation particularly when the paths disappear and the mist settles over the tussocky ground. The weather was excellent for training: howling gales; driving rain and cold nights. This will mean that they should find the assessed expedition in Snowdonia in June – easy. Despite being wet, they all worked hard as a team and their campcraft and navigation developed well. They managed to overcome the challenge of forgetting the poles and pegs for one of the tents. Well done to Bertie, Will, Caspar, Louis, Monty, Miles and George – who returned to school, tired and rather smelly – but having successfully completed their Dofe Gold Training. 1/9 BOARDERS CLIMBING ACTIVITY Our boarders went out for a fun, active evening of indoor climbing last week. 1/3 YEAR 8 ART Year 8 created quick relief print portraits this week of artists whose work they will be responding to next term. year 8 collage year 8 collage year 8 collage year 8 collage 1/3 LOST PROPERTY Please click through and contact amylee@frensham.org if anything is yours. 1/14 SPORTS REPORT SPORTS REPORT Staff v Students Hockey Match Another thrilling game ending in a 3-3 draw after some fine goals and great saves from staff GK Dan Pullen. Take a listen to David Lloyds verdict on the afternoon game! P hotos by Sabine Yr 10 1/10 1/6 Staff & Students Basketball Match The staff played basketball against the U18 team on Tuesday. It was played in a great spirit and some excellent basketball was played by both teams. The game ebbed and flowed with both teams leading at different times. There was a great battle for the rebounds between Curtis and Jack. Finally it came down to the last 15 seconds and the student team were trailing by 3 pts. They passed the ball up the court really quickly and on the buzzer Ben sunk a 3 pointer to equalise. It was a great way to finish a great term of basketball. 1/1 U11 Mixed Hockey v Alton Game 1: The U11 hockey team played their last game of the season on Wednesday afternoon against Alton. It's been a term packed full of fixtures and the improvement that the students have made from the start of the season has been great, not only in their level of skill but also their willingness to represent the school and positive attitude. Alton brought over three teams and we rotated round to play lots of mini games. At the start of the afternoon, the team found themselves defending deep and struggling to find a way out. However, this slowly changed and the team worked out that playing the ball out wide and then down the line was giving them joy. This resulted in several crosses into the D and chances to score. They continued to attack in waves and found pockets of space in the middle to pass the ball around the opposition. Over the four games we drew one and won three. Well done to all involved and we look forward to the cricket season. Game 2: This weeks match was against Alton who brought three teams which meant we could have a rotation of games going on which meant lots of match play for everyone. During our first match we struggled to move the ball up the pitch, this led us to defending most of the match as Alton were a strong side who were pushing for their first goal. It took us a while to adapt and change how we were playing but soon enough Frensham were pushing the ball up the pitch away from our ‘D’. There was some fantastic dribbling from the team which was followed with some great dodges around the Alton players. After the first game we seemed a little bit more settles and ready for the other three matches. It was great to see the teams improvement from the first game of the afternoon to the last. Their passing and positioning on pitch had improved which allowed the team to push and apply pressure to Alton’s ‘D’. It was a great way to finish the season with a great afternoon of matches. Well done to everyone that played! Girls Football Tournament – Sports Leaders On Monday our sixth form sports leaders hosted local primary schools in a girls football tournament. Here’s what they had to say about it… This week we hosted an under 11 girls football tournament, which was a great success. We invited four different schools with 6 teams overall (Potters gate, Frensham Heights, Rowledge and St Peters). All teams played a round robin tournament with a final and 3rd + 4th, 5th + 6th play off. Congratulations to St Peters who came away with a trophy. During the organisation of the tournament, we invited Sophie (girls football coach) who now has set up a coaching company to attend the tournament and give out all awards, including her own player of the day from Rowledge. We have been coaching the year 6's for the last few months, and decided to give the girls the opportunity to play competitive football, to show off their skills which they learnt. 1/12 Staff & Students Volleyball Match On Tuesday lunchtime the staff played volleyball against a very strong 6th form team. Not surprisingly the students won the first set 25 - 16 and a big upset was on the cards. The staff team played much better in the 2nd half and managed to win the 2nd set 25-22. Due to the lack of time the 3rd set was up to 11 and the staff sneaked a 11-9 win. Massive thank you to the 6th formers. They’ve been brilliant in the Volleyball ECA and we’ve never had some many talented players. 1/1 Staff & Sixth Formers Badminton Tournament Another lovely Tuesday evening with staff and students playing badminton. This week we “ mixed things up “ and did the teams out of a hat. On paper the Giles/ Cristina partnership looked very strong but they came up against a determined Alicia / Lloydy pairing , who went on to win the trophy and chocolate. It’s been brilliant to watch the students improve so much over the last 6 weeks or so.Fingers crossed we can carry on after Easter. 1/1 Hockey Mentions Congratulations to Hayden and Rudi on winning coaches awards for the under 14s and 15s hockey teams this term and to Jamie on winning most improved hockey player for the under 15s this term. And a big congratulations to the four winners this hockey term from the under 12/13s. Kathryn, Erina, Sulli and Ava all showed an great attitude in matches and very supportive to all their teammates. Dulcie also won an award but sadly wasn’t in school this Wednesday. A huge thank you to all students for putting in massive effort … was a long hockey term!! Also a big thanks to Will and Chrissy in taking all the matches. 1/3 Fixture Calendar A reminder that you can see all fixtures for the half term on the SOCS sport frensham website, team selection activates on Thursdays the week before matches.
